now that I've had the XDA II for a week...
what/when will the XDA III come out?
I'm pretty sure it will have:
1. faster CPU
2. more memory
3. WiFi
4. better screen (probably VGA resolution)
I hope it also have:
1.. GPS
2. WiFi
3. longer / bigger / optional battery
4. better camera
5. better software e.g. camera, pic id, ie, backup, ...
6. usable as a wireless in-house phone via bluetooth
What else do you guys expect?
Ummm,,, I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself. It isnt even out yey (XDAII) in most parts of the world. I mean, you might as well ask when is the XDAIV or XDAV coming out? Im sure all of your speculations will be addressed in some time to come.....
not to mention that iPaq is planning to release a whole new ppc rumored to be with even more capabilities than the xda2. heard about it while attending a techie conference in hong kong...they're planning to use the iPaq 5550 (the one with bluetooth, fingerprint bio-thingee, etc) as the base model. from there they're going to add a high res camera, phone edition, possibly gps, etc. so it may give xda a run for it's money as they try to overtake one another in terms of capabilities. that's the sad part about releasing your product ahead of the pack; it becomes the basis for releasing an improved product by reverse engineering. in any case, it'll be most interesting to see how the next generation ppcs will look like and how they will perform.
2 cents worth..
robson
I heard it's based on the 4xxx form factor (aka no more sleeves..ever).
And it will only have 64 MB of RAM.
Haha yeah right, the MDA II was rumored at one point to only have 64 MB of RAM, but it didn't come out with that. Gotta keep in mind, stuff is only rumors. Don't keep waiting around for that perfect device.
I'm happy with my XDA II for now, and if the H6000 comes out six months from now and is way better, well, then I got 6 months good use out of my XDA II, and I can decide then if I want to upgrade.
Those people saying "I'll hold off on the XDA II and wait for the H6000 cause I've heard it's so good, etc. etc." seem silly to me, because when the H6000 comes out, something else bigger (or smaller in the PDA world, lol) and better will be rumoredm and they'll be saying "I'll hold off on the H6000 and wait for the ______ because it's so good, etc. etc."

if you think about for how long from the xda were released to the xda2 got here i say it's pretty hard to say what it will offer
it's hard to predict more so about the furture
maybe it'll have
wireless glasses / eye pad screen
maybe it'll have ESP interface
maybe it'll connect directly to satelites
maybe it'll give you a brain turmor after a few hours use
Maybe you can add "TV Tuner" and "CF Slot" in your list...
I reckon it will be 3g compatible.
3G, CF, TV
TV/FM tuner will be nice. Samsung already came out with something
like this in the far east, I think.
I'd guess the XDA III "information" will be here in 9-10 months,
and by then a CF card will be useless, especialyl if we get WiFi+GPS
builtin and standard 1Gb SD cards.
If you guys think that HTC engineers aren't already working on
the XDA III, you're very wrong.
I think 3G is unlikely to show up on a global form anytime soon.
Adding WiFi and/or GPS receiver to already GSM/Bluetooth signals
is going to be hard enough, electorically (shielding), so 3G might
be 2-3 years away.
Hopefully, with WM2004, we'll have more than 32 processes and
better overall device management. Right now, I'm forced to
soft-reset every 2-3 days, and I don't like that.
Man, I soft reset every few hours. What's the big deal? It boots up as fast as it would load a webpage, so the wait isn't that bad.
Why do people complain about soft resetting? I just like that I get to choose when to soft reset (i.e. after saving all work, closing all apps, etc.), rather than it locking up and forcing a soft reset. The XDA II is a stable device, to be sure.

seriously -> LOL
btw...i think i already have a brain tumor, right above my right ear
regarding soft reset
he he. Maybe I should soft-reset every now and then.
My problem is, I've had ie+multie+battery2004 create some lockup
that soft-reset didn't really cleanup.
I suspect I pressed the mult-ie func-menu while a page was loading
and something more was going on... anyway:
I had to Hard-reset.
I restored my xBackup from my SD (night before, device was soft
reset and no active apps while running)
and guess what, after the restore the device won't reboot.
tried it twice. had to go back to activesync backup... yak.
I've had multiple times where I had to soft-reset while an app was
active, but the menu has gone "dead"... I turn the device off,
then press reset, as if "when it is sleepy" a soft reset is "safer".
I'm pretty sure this is just vodoo... but it works for me.
Now everytime I soft-reset I wonder if I ever going to see it reload...
Hi mgolanlan!
It's some off-thing, but can you write a key for MultiIE3 to me?
I'd be so happy
Thanks!
mgolanlan
well since a 3g phone works on the current gsm networks aswell
same thing with edge i dont find it all that unlikely that xda3 may support some of these new tech's
guess in many ways it also depend on ms's view on edge and 3g and video phone issues

hhmmm are you sure that you just dident forget to take off your bluetooth ear piece ? sleeping with it on may cause an uncomfortable ache
All the above and
It will have a find OBL/Saddam/hackers button
Make world peace
be 2mm thick
only occasionally crash when making a phone call, or syncing to outlook.
It will of course be much smaller, 1"x1", but compensate this with a (foldable) 15" display
my exp show that things which fold end up as
1 worn out so it'll not stay in any pos
2 the plastic breaks (happent 2 times with crap acer laptops for me)
so it's better to project the image then fold it out
VGA screen ?
WM2003 specs say 240x320. No more, no less !
Maybe next version of OS will allow other rezs, but for now it will remain 240x320.
so what ?
xda1 came with 2002
xda2 came with 2003
xda2 will come with XXXX???

1. it is official that wm2004 will support higher resolutions
2. 3rd party software already does, for PDFs, IE etc
3. a Toshiba pocketPC already avail with VGA res,
and it is typically run the 4-pixel-is-one thing, but has
exceptions for some software (pictures?!)
VGA-resolution ppc-size screen is already here!
I personally will not be happy until my PDA is a tiny, rounded stainless steel implant with a small cable that inductively couples to my optic nerves, a pickup coil for the charger mat that is under my bed-sheets, another tiny cable to hook to my inner ears for mike and earpiece, and some pickup electrodes to be fitted near certain regions in the brain.
Man, I can just see myself sitting there, enjoying the 4800x2400 stereo overlayed display, simply thinking my E-mails. And of course the device would use the same inductive optic-nerve pickup as a camera, and it would have enough processing power to replace people and objects I do not like in real-time, add nice works of art on otherwise boring surfaces, and add up all visual information about certain people until they can be renedered without their clothes on. Just think of the money saved on home decoration and travel.
Hej,
the touchscreen of my O2 XDA Neo is dead... most of the time. After a long time (i.e. can't be told exactly) not using it, it works for a few strokes, so I can get the phone to run. Rapidly it changes then, first the right half of the screen ceases to work (nearly exactly the right half, fiddling with notes or align screen shows that), soon the whole screen doesn't react. Some time later it may work again.
Some of the software can be used by using only the navigation buttons, lot of the software (including dialing arbitrary numbers) can't.
Is there any way out? As the warranty is void, I don't hesitate to open the device, if it may help. But I guess it is not as simple as increasing or decreasing the pressure on the screens edges...
Or is there any input software that uses the navigation keys? The standard soft keyboard can't be used this way, the other additional keyboards I found surfing the net don't have this possibility too. (Is there a board here to ask for software for a specific OS? Or where is a good playce to do this?)
Thanks
Inmare
In short, sometimes it's working and sometimes it's not?
Maybe there is a loose connection somewhere? Although I'm afraid it won't be that easy, but who knows. Guess a touchscreen is quite a delicate piece of electronics.
I'm afraid I don't know any software for typing and stuff and using the keyboard with your keys etc.
It does for for some (short) time, then ceases to work - sometimes at once, sometimes slowly (first the right half, after some time the left).
I don't expect to be able to repair a defective touchscreen; I hope it's just a loose connector or such... this device uses star shaped screws smaller than grade 9, I have to get appropriate tools tomorrow (i.e. today as it is past 12pm... so yesterday is today too... so I already bought the tools yesterday? I need a digital diary again to keep track of this ). Lets see if I can get the device to be reliable again.
The digitizers are sold on eBay (example) for not much. Not sure how to install them tho.
Interesting. At least I now know the size of the screwdriver. And I see the connector... I think it is worth the try.
Here you can see the inside of the device. Looks like the digitizer and the display are packed together within a metal case, but maybe it is just the connector. Otherwise I will have to open this too.
I think I will do this in the far future. Next year
Thank you.
Hi Inmare,
is there any improvement
because I have the same problem with my jamin
what should I do?
Ok so my Cingular 8525 is basically unusable due to the touchscreen thinking it's getting taps in the upper right corner (upper left in landscape mode). This has the nice effect of closing programs down to the today screen in portrait mode or constantly popping up the start menu in landscape mode (about three times a second). Any ideas?
I tried soft resetting and also removing the battery for several minutes. Haven't tried a hard reset as I don't want to go through that except for a last resort. Tried wiping the screen with a soft cloth. There are no weird programs on the device except what everyone here uses.
I still have 5 days before the end of my 30 days return period with Cingular. If I bring it back will they just give me another one?

on your touchscreen problem.. i have seen this occur by someone improperly putting on a screen protector or maybe there is some dirt up there.. and if you take it back to the store they may give you a new one or make you call the warranty by mail line and get a replacement that way
..... or your OK button could be stuck down
I took a bottle of lens cleaner from my camera bag and thoroughly cleaned the screen. I ran my fingernails under the edge of the screen and really made sure no dirt was under there. Lo and behold, it seems to be working fine now. I browsed some RSS headlines for about 10 minutes with no problems.
Weird though, I have used an Ipaq 4705 WM5 pocket pc for two years now and really ran it through the ringer. It looks like it's been to war and back (which it has in a since) and never experienced errant screen taps. Oh well, still enjoying the 8525 (last phone was 2125).
Thanks so much!

Just a note of caution!!! This is related to the screen alignment issue i.e. the touch sensitive area of the screen continuing beneath the bezel and causing unwanted touches whether through dust or the sticky gasket in there.
May not return, or will be cured again by the "business card" fix / or as you did a firm clean to release the screen from touching the bezel.
But, it's a question for you, if you only have 5 days left under warranty. Most people with the SA problem find the first signs appear in the first couple of weeks. I would certainly put it through it's paces, open up a few applications leave wifi on so it heats up, surf web over wifi etc etc as the added bit of heat generated internally was a known factor in exacerbating the problem. If all stays well over next couple of days maybe it'll be OK.
Would be good to get urgent feedback from anyone with a newer Hermes who's had this issue and what happened.
Mike
Argh, it's back. OK, I'm certain it's a touchscreen problem and not a button sticking as holding down OK will not cause the start menu to pop up while an application is up and holding the windows key will not close an app. Also the problem is delayed if I hold the stylus down on the screen. It's just the upper right (portrait mode) of the screen that is getting the errant screen tap (about three or four times a second).
I've ran a business card through the edges and it doesn't help. I'm not going to take this thing apart. I did that several times with the 2125 to fix unresponsive keys and joystick but the problems always reappear. My one year old 2125 is barely functional now. My g/f would rather keep her crap LG flip phone then inhieret the 2125 after watching me battle it. That's pretty sad.
I'm going to try a hard reset (second one in three weeks) and if that doesn't help I'm returning it to Cingular and getting my money back. Then I'll either buy another one or a blackjack. I like the 3g and love this device. It's my third Windows Mobile 5.0 product. I don't like the sub-par build quality on my second HTC product now. I paid $599 plus tax for this phone at a local Cingular store (despite the web store saying $550).
My advice for what it's worth is take it back. This screen business has a habit of coming and going and it's entirely possible you hard reset and everything is fine and two weeks later it's back. Also would be better to return with the issue present (not that they wouldn't believe you -would they?)
On the whole though this problem is much more rare than it was, so if you do get the same device again hopefully you will be luckier. If you get directly from shop though check the firmness of the key board clicking into place that seems to still be fairly common problem.
Not the best start to the new year!!
Mike
Well I got desperate and hard reset... I could barely get past the screen alignment startup so needless to say that didn't fix things. Having gone this far and thoroughly pissed at having to reinstall everything I decided to loosen those screws on the back and run a card around the edges.
So far, it's working! I'm not content settling on this hack though so I'm bringing it back Tuesday and will update on my experience at the retail store (not looking forward to that).
Happy new year and thanks for all the super fast responses guys!
Alignment
I was browsing the www the other day and saw a korean/ japanese site showing the inside of these precious devices, and (as pointed out above) how the seal/ gasket underneath the bezel is the root cause of our anguish.
There were some detailed pics of how you can DIY, and remove the gasket, but it's no where near me basic level of competency.
Why would they design a touch-screen to big for the device I wonder???
there is also the business card trick about sliding it underneath the edges to loosen the gasket... there is a whole thread on this screen alignment issue
what site shows how to fix the gasket?
There is a post about someone seeing a site showing how to fix the gasket proplem on the touch screen. Could I please get the URL??

Just got back in from my local Cingular store and actually had a pleasant, hassle-free experience exchanging my 8525 for a brand new one. I explained to the CSR the issue and she immediately understood the problem (must not be the first guy walking in there about this).
Unfortunately, she didn't have any in stock but merrily called around and found six others in stock at nearby stores. So off I went to the next store and had the old 8525 exchanged for a new one in less then ten minutes. The CSR didn't even bother to look at the old phone or check the accessories I returned with it.
The new 8525 is syncing up as I write this and immediately I notice some things are different. First of all, written on the side of the box is 12/26. So we know this phone is probably brand new. The keyboard does indeed click in and out more firmly then my old one. The USB cable plugs in tighter (a good thing, I was always getting USB connection problems), and lo and behold Windows Vista installed HTC sync drivers then Media Player automatically recognized the device (never did any of that on the old one).
I'm using the Windows Mobile Device Center Beta on Vista RTM and it just finished syncing without any problems. Moral of this story is if your 8525 is experiencing any problems at all and you are within 30 days, return it for a hassle free refund.
Good news and you're absolutely right about getting it back within warranty if there's a fault.
Great stuff!

Cingular 8525 touch screen no working
I am having a problem with the touch screen on my 8525. My phone was working fine then the then the screen stopped responding. I was able to navigate via keyboard but that was it. I did a soft reset and it did not help. I then did a hard reset and the screen went to the setup and wants to align the screen which obviously I cannot do.
The changes I have made the same day prior to it not working are as follows:
-Unlocked with Hermes SIM Unlock
-Installed latest Cingular ROM
-Installed fit4cat Hermes Tweaker v1.1a
The phone worked fine for about 12 hrs before the touch screen stopped working.
Any suggestions?
Hey there, I have had the problem before (about 3.5 weeks ago). I had to send it in for service (since I am not a Cingular customer anymore but use the 8525 with T-mobile).Good luck.

Dear all,
1- I have I-mate Jam, my mobile re-start without any reason. I mean whenever I receive any call or even without touching any button, it restart. I'm afraid about it. Is it infected by any virus??
2- By mistake I add a folder name "patches" in my memory card, about 25 subfolder has been added automatically, now I can’t delete it. Is there any other solution than formatting my memory card?
3- Is there any possibility that any mobile show 165,315 (18.8 years countinuously) hours outgoing call duration?? I think it is very funny. Surly there is any problem.
Please help me....
Ali
Hi there,
1. It's very unlikely that that's caused by a virus. There's what, like only 4-5 viruses last time I checked? And they're all prototypes and pretty harmless. I'd say the problem lies with your battery contact plates. Try cleaning them with the usual contact cleaners.
Some people suggest adding a piece of paper between the battery and the base so as to improve contact, but I'm not sure how this affects the heat generated by the battery. Also, a loose battery cover may also cause periodic restarts.
2. Whats inside the subfolders? If there's a file in use inside it, then it'll probably be locked out. What file management software did you use to create the directory? I use GSFinder to browse my files, and that has never given me any problem with file management and deletion.
http://pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1203
3. Maybe you call out more than you realize ? Not sure about this, but then again I've never tried 2.03.
Hope this helps.
Hi
1- I was assuming these solutions; someone told me that it is due to weak battery, so I replaced it. Secondly I cleaned the battery contact plates, but I am afraid why my cell battery got so hot .... I don't keep any hot material in my cell . If it is due to any virus, can you suggest any effective antivirus?
2- All the subfolders are empty. Whenever I search anything in my memory card, my PDA got stuck n I have to re-start it. Is there any software which help me in formatting my card?
3- Can I clean my call history from my PDA?
Regards
Hi,
1. So cleaning the contacts didn't help? Well, make sure that your battery cover is secure, because loose battery cover happened to me once and I experienced random restarts. There's a latch near the battery that switches the power, if I'm not mistaken, and it's pressed only when the cover is put in place. I added some dry super glue on my cover and the problem went away.
I'd guess that the battery itself wasn't a problem, as weak batteries usually result in early shutdowns at 40% power or so. Be careful with hot batteries though. Low quality batteries can brick your phone permanently. Also, Li-Polymer batteries can catch fire when overheated. Make sure you only use legitimate, official batteries. It's much safer to use originals than one of those dodgy cheap ones on eBay.
If you're still looking for an antivirus, you may wanna try Avast PDA edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-pda.html
This one has a free trial. But not sure about the quality though, as I've never used this on my phone. But the Home Edition on my PC works perfectly.
2. What file explorer are you using? Have you tried GSFinder, Total Commander or other freeware file explorers that are available?
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?sortby=rating&cat=23
Have a look at this to try format the card:

Screen setting
Hi
Thanks for your useful tips. I tried them all and I was just tired but in vain. At last I bought a set of screw driver. I opened my cell (I don't recommend anyone to do so, because you can damage your cell) I opened it and find carbon ( very slight ) on different points ( can’t explain exactly where the points were because I don't have diagram of I-mate Jam ). I removed that carbon with thinner (It was very risky)
Someone was asking about screen resent problem on this forum. My cell also had the same problem. There is a bunch of wires coming from the back of touch screen, these wires fix inside a socket. There is a black color cover that fix the wires inside that socket. During mishandling that cover got loose, that's why my cell flickered some time. I had to reset the screen touch (which irritated me a lot). I fixed that cover and now my Jam works perfect.
As I said earlier, opening this kind of sensitive sets sometime damage your cell. My mobile mike is not working properly. I don't know where problem is.
I need help.
Ps. I need I-mate Jam circuit.
I think this information might be useful for lots of people.
The question is: What problems should we look for when wanting to buy a second hand hermes, and how to look for them?
Everyone who's had problems with herms or knows about them should give an oppinion.thanks
Watch out for:
High frequent tone, ONLY when the display is on. Very annoying.
My phone has been to the shop for 3 times. Now I have got a new phone!
But I miss my HTC......
i had that one too, on the day i bought the 2nd hand tytn. changed the radio and rom and it went away. then the battery started heating, but i don't know if it heated before too
1). turn device on if you can.
2) sceen alignment and whitescreen - some people have the whitescreen problem, to see if it could be in yours(one type anyway) run your finger down to the bottom right at the side lcd screen (not on the screen, the casing) til you are about 2/3 of the way down from the top. lightly increase pressure and see if it starts going white. Please note this is a specific type of whitescreen which can be fixed BUT will have the warranty voided to do so. Try running a screen alignment (ask if FTouch flo is on the phone & active as this will stop this working and require a soft reset to fix)
2). test the buttons usually the bottom buttons ie. hotkeys, answer/hangup. but dont forget to check out the slideout keyboard too.
3). check to see if the battery gets hot or if there are any "hot spots" on the case. this indicates problems too. there may be a short somewhere on the hermes that is draining power REALLY quickly or may be affecting if power gets to where its needed.
4). soft reset and check if "no GSM" flashes up in the loading stage as this shows its a brick with a corrupted radio rom. this may be fixable but for me personally it would be bought only for parts (and would have to be cheap).
This is what I'd do as it is fairly quick BUT ths works only if you can see the device before you buy it otherwise you may be in for a nasty surprise.
Hope this helps...

While it's not exactly a problem, it could be a warning that problems may happen in the future.
Check the stickers under the battery, make sure the VOID sticker is intact and the (at least mine had one) reflective sticker is also intact.
Check the model and IMEI listed on the sticker, then compare it to the model and IMEI listed under the Identity tab in Device Information (Start -> Settings -> System -> Identity tab). This could give away someone trying to sell a HERM100 model as a new HERM200 (and asking a higher price), or a phone that may have been dropped and damaged. Also check the call duration tab if it's being sold as 'low use' (true, this can be cleared, but it's not exactly a couple of taps to do it).
At the very least, this could save the buyer some dosh and expose the seller as the potentially slimy person they are.
White screen mda vario 2
Hi,
I have purchased a mda vario 2, last november, with only 3 months waranty, now I`m having problems.
I have had my screen going white, some times if I go into landscape mode or turn the light on and off by means of pressing the power buton quickly the screen comes back, then the screen sometimes goes all blurry.
Now the phone wont come back on at all, all I get is this white screen, the screen lights up but just a white screen, nothing else.
So I bought a new screen from E-Bay and I connected it up to my phone but I get the same, the screen lights up, same old white screen.
Nothing else, If anyone knows what this problem is I would be very grateful.
It was a shop I brought the screen from off of E-Bay, I asked prior to purchasing this screen if it would be compatible with my phone and they told me that it was.
Many Thanks for any help, ideas what this could be.

I appologize if I hijacked someone else`s thread.
As I am new to this site I thought that you just use it like you do in a chat room.
I guess I was wrong, I`ll try to figure out how you use this site without annoying anyone.
My Appologies.
Anyways, Thankyou for your help, and for the hijacking part.
thinking of buying a hermes
I've been reading through out the forums because I am seriously thinking of buying this phone, a second-hand because I can't afford a brand new one. I'm a bit worried about the Whitescreen and D-pad failures thread, it seems it's the usual or maybe common problem of this model. So I have some questions before I do get this model.
-How would I know if the phone has been opened for repairs?
because I read here that you need to open the phone to fix the whitescreen prob.
-Do I look for one that has FTouch flo to check the screen alignment?
is there any other way to do this just in case the phone doesn't have one installed.
-How long does the battery last if you only use it for texting, wifi and making short calls? Also about the battery heating up, does it mean while it's idle? Is it sometimes normal for batteries to heat/warm up?

sceen alignment and whitescreen - some people have the whitescreen problem, to see if it could be in yours(one type anyway) run your finger down to the bottom right at the side lcd screen (not on the screen, the casing) til you are about 2/3 of the way down from the top. lightly increase pressure and see if it starts going white. Please note this is a specific type of whitescreen which can be fixed BUT will have the warranty voided to do so
Are there other more ways to check if symptoms of whitescreen is present? I'd really like to be thorough because I'm pretty sure the ones that I can afford would not have any warranty anymore.
The ff. are the things I think I should do to make sure the phone is in good condition:
Make a call
Send SMS
Try wifi
Use the camera
Check all keys/buttons on the front, sides and dpad if all working
Bluetooth
Try a memory card
Pls. advice me if I've forgotten anything else.
I'm actually choosing between Hermes and HTC Elf, I'm leaning more to the Hermes because of the Dpad and it's slightly cheaper than the Elf.
Thanks in advance!
Also check the external speaker, I have four that I tweak, and two had loose speaker connections(made a good deal for me). It's an easy fix, I got the tool at radio shack. BTW these units are out of warranty.
Ok I'll add that.
Anything else?
Essentially a good indication of a possible whitescreen issue is the buttons on the front not working.
To check to see if its been opened look under battery as jdc said, theres a small white sticker over a screw on the right hand side thats says Void if removed, If can see a screw under the flash LED, then its been opened.
Cheers...
