Hi,
yesterday I field-tested HitchHiker (latest available version) on my Wiz, and it worked quite well. The only problem - one I had already experienced with the earlier ROM version - is that after using it once the Wizard begins behaving strange. Namely:
- Slower menu response
- Softkeys sometimes not working
- The power button takes several tries to actually get the device off
Is this just me, or is somebody else experiencing the same problems?
I'm beginning to think the problems come from some inter-app incompatibility (who knows... maybe HitchHiker doesn't like the G-protocol enabler, or something like that)... any suggestion/solution?
Also, I'm welcoming suggestions for other wardriving apps WITH a sensible option to connect to found APs (WiFiFoFum, in example, is very stylish but won't allow you to select a specific AP to connect to when you want to)...
Thank you in advance for your help!
Well, I don' know about hitchhiker but like you, I came to be very dissapointed with wififofum so I switched to Wifi companion and I'm very happy with it, no glitches whatsoever
Wifi companion was pretty good but my trail ran out but after I sorted out the Hitchhiker crashing problem (make sure you register your MSN details, although you dont actually have to connect) I havent had any issues at all, seems quite stable.
Huh?
Are you saying that adding a profile in Msn Messenger makes Hitchhiker stable?
It makes no sense at all... but since even HH's installation is crazy, I'm trying it anyway...
I can vouch for that post about Pocket MSN registering.
I don't know what it is.
When hitchhikers goes to connect to a wifi point, it tries to connect to google to verify connectivity on the wifi, and then it sends up a notification saying connected.
Just before that notification pops up, my hitchhiker would always crash. That is until I filled out Pocket MSN info (After seeing to do that in another thread)
I know it's crazy. Doesn't make any sense what so ever.
Worked for me
Just tried it and it works fine. Just another way MSN is encroaching on our lives
He's pretty unstable, always mumbling to himself...I'm afraid he might try to off me further down the road
I can't believe it, I just read this topic..I never got HitchHiker to work..now I simply registered my pocket msn, and hichthiker connected! without a soft-rest or anything HitchHiker depends on pocket MSN!? its unbelievable.
I always loved the simplicity of the prog, but after connecting acociating etc, the connection was lost. Just register your MSN and the damn program works..VERY strange!

Hi. This has worked for me, and solved a massive problem. Hope it helps someone else too.
Step 1:
Ensure you are trying to fix the same problem as I was by looking at the symptoms, which were:
- HTC Wizard synchronizes OK when you plug it in the first time
- It stays in sync if you leave it plugged in
- If you unplug it and then plug it back in at any time later, XDA goes s-l-o-o-o-w and then freezes and will NOT re-sync
- If you unplug it and soft reset before reconnecting then it's fine
Essentially, the Wizard was requiring a soft reset between every connection to the USB cable, or it would crash and require a reset anyway!
These issues have been discussed in about 10 threads on this board, and on pretty much every other resource for Wizards and Pocket PC devices on the net. I was, however, totally unable to find something like this which directly addressed the problem.
Step 2:
Download a program called Dr. TCP from here: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp
Run it to open a dialog box with loads of fields with strange techy names... no, i didn't understand it either. However, I've been searching the net for days and I found an article here: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;504222574;fp;2;fpid;1277378924 which told me how to work the numbers out...
In the bottom drop-down box, select "Windows Mobile-based Device" and enter 1492 in the box next to that. That's your maximum "MTU".
Here are the settings which work for me (from the top). If i don't mention a setting, I didn't change it!
Tcp Recieve Window: 261360
Dial Up (RAS) MTU: 1492
Path MTU Discovery: Yes
Save and Exit Dr. Tcp.
Step 3:
You need to open "Network Connections"... in XP, that's Start > Connect To > Show All Connections. I'm sure you can find it yourself. Anyway there should be an icon called "Local Area Connection (x)" with "Wireless Mobile-based Device" written in grey underneath.
Right click on that and select DISABLE. This will close your USB connection to your Wizard so those MTU settings can be applied.
Now unplug your Wizard from its cable. Here, I tried right clicking on the connection and selecting "Enable", but it just errored. So you need to unplug it.
Step 4:
Reconnect and see what happens. I am now happily disconnecting and reconnecting as many times as i like and it just keeps on synchronising itself. MAMMA MIA!
If this solves your nasty "i need to reset every time I disconnect" problems then please post here to say so. If it doesn't work then post here also, I guess. If this is a solution for you then credit for this is not mine - it's just the sum total of a lot of searching across this and other forums, websites and message boards. THANKS!
not working
These steps did not work for me.
I still have to reset the device otherwise I get this message after about 5 minutes.
"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer."
It appears to be only a problem syncing as I can still explore the device.
well...
...that's depressing. I genuinely thought that would work for other people too.
Did you read that PCWorld article I linked to? it explains how I got those numbers... they could be different for you, perhaps?
I'll keep thinking...
I did not look at the article. I'm having other issues trying to get my 2 computers synced with my mobile device http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=234189. Once I get those resolved I can try some different things.
On my home computer I am only synchronizing favorites and files and it doesn't appear to be a problem.[/url]
Oh right ok. I read your other post too, but I only have 1 PC for home and work so i can't help with that.
Has anyone else tried this?
I am no longer having the problem since I fixed my other sync issue (multiple computers issue). I had reinstalled activesync and did a hard reset on my device so maybe something else got cleared up. I am also having much better luck with the way my device is running. Before I was getting frequent slowdowns and lockups. I am a much happier customer and will be sticking with my cingular 8125. I just love all the features, but the activesync issues and slowness was starting to get to me. I'm so glad it is all behind me now and I can start to really enjoy the thing. Although I have yet to connect my bluetooth headset, that may have caused me issues too. Sorry I couldn't be more help testing this out.
I and a work college have had this problem on both our systems and found that it was being caused by Avantgo.
It would work fine and sync every time for days until we installed Avantgo.
After these we both had the symptoms you describe in the first post until we did a hard reset and re installed everything except Avantgo, it was then fine again. As a test I then reinstalled it and it started not syncing again, my college who has not reinstalled it has had no further problems.
I have now been running for 3 weeks with no problems and no Avantgo.
If you have it installed it may be worth trying it without for a wile and see if it helps.
Didn't work for me. Still no connection when plugging in for the 2nd time. MTU value changes back to blank when opening the Dr.TCP again, the other values are ok though. But thanks anyway for the hints!
Greetings,
Andreas
Didn't work for me neither...
just to check (i know this sounds daft) but you did DEFINITELY press the SAVE button in Dr TCP before you pressed the EXIT button? can't imagine why it wouldn't store the data.
aaaaaaaaanyway i guess it's not the ubersolution i thought it was
Now I thought I had this working 100% using this hack (It was on a clean install of WM5 however so this may have been why it worked). Anyhow, it stopped working again after I installed PocketWeather ... now locks up whenever I connect....
I wonder if it is 3rd part s/w causing some of the problems with AS? Is it down to the scheduled update in PocketWeather or simply hooks into the ConnectionManager / ActiveSync from apps looking to see if a network connection exists....
I think some more investigation is required ... or perhaps I will flood MS with 1000's of emails telling them how flakey their software is *(Though I think they already know that)*
Any updated? I'm having this same problem, except my device won't connect at all! Even after a reset. It connected once and that was it.
Hi Silentz,
sure, I saved the settings. I'll try the ActiveSync clean install-method and report the results. 'Hope that MS will put out an update or better version soon! Rumours out there?
Greetings,
Andreas
tried and failed...
tried the above TCP solution- Not working for me either...
Found best solution. Go try the latest imate rom. You can then plug out/in the cable as many times as you want & it'll just work fine.

It seems to be as soon as you access the internet through the passthru connection on Activesync. So installing AvantGo/PocketWeather might explain this to a certain degree as they may be accessing the internet.
Incidentally, how could Microsoft have stuffed up so badly with Activesync? It's a tiny program but works so badly - Couldn't a third party come up with a different version of Activesync or something? I'd pay for it if it worked better than this crock!
Just for info, the latest iMate ROM (With Push Email) does indeed seem to fix this issue. Obviously it was with the WM5 side rather than anything that could be fixed on the PC side.
My Active-sink probelms disappeared since upgrade to the latest iMate ROM. Has been working like a charm with all apps and utilities installed, Tweaks2k2, Spb Pocket Plus, Pocket Informant, Worldmate Pro, etc...
told you it works
cheers
I am running the 2.08 (Qtek test) rom and have this issue since last friday. before that never had it!!
What I changed on thursday was: enable exchange server sync and use it. because push-email si no solution for me I just disabled it and dropped the association.
Then (on friday) the trouble started.
I tried DrTCP...and ended up with a broken netlogon (secure client) service on the pc. The IS solution for that was a new image . . thank you very much.
I am back on track with the pc now, but AS still slows down my device.
Are any of you having this trouble using or have used:
-Push email
-Blackberry
What is the amount of free program memory on your device? Mine is around 6MB (probably caused by Blackberry install which I cant remove). . . .
I found streethawk out on the modaco forums and was wondering if is a viable option over hitchhiker. Anyone know anything about compatibility with wm5? Usability?
doesn't work for me just says "waiting on WCZ to be free" forever and doesn't show any networks. (or was it WSZ? i can't remember)

Mine said the same, couldnt be arsed to try to get it working. Hitchhiker works perfectly for me.
Doesn't work here also.
Too bad....looked like a nice little app
Hitchiker always crashes after it's found the network for me. On an O2 mini s.
On my Qtek 9100 HitchHiker behaves strangely also. It usually finds half the APs WiFiFoFum does, and it NEVER connects. Also, on exiting it borks the PDA, and I have to manually remove it from memory to get things going again.
Is there anyone with a Qtek 9100 out there who has HitchHiker actually working and can suggest a reliable operating procedure?
Also, are there any other wardriving (WITH connecting feature) which actually work?
Well, I haven't tried Streethawk but it's disappointing that won't work.
I've had hitchiker running just fine on my wizard, though. I didn't do anything special but I exit just fine and while I only connect at my house it's able to do that just fine. I'll try doing a comparison sometime of the two war-drivers and see how many networks each gives me.
Couldnt get Hitchiker to work on my Wizard. Get a message about and error and the program has to close. This happens just after it has found an access point and tries to connect.
i find that WiFiFoFum works good for me, version 0.3.3.3 i think, if you go for the nicer looking version 2 then you have to install .net compact framework version 2 as well. plus if you connect a GPS unit then you can try and triangulate the signal
WiFiFoFum is great, but only to scan for APs. It doesn't have a simple way to select one of them and connect to it - or am I missing something?

No it's true - really annoying in a multiple network area if you want to hit a specific AP.
Yes sorry i forgot that, it doesnt allow you to connect, but i did find that it logs AP even if they have only got the WEAKEST signal or you only see it for a split second so you can then go in search. if im bored i go looking for AP's using WiFiFoFum and then try to connect using a combo of 'PockLan' which allows you to ping and search a range of an IP subnet and also map a drive of a share (the mapping is abit flacky) otherwise i use RescoExplorer to map the drive bacause its good at it.
Does anyone try and connect while wardriving or are you just looking?
P.S i am still looking for a good BlueJacking software for windows mobil, for symbian there are loads of good one like BTEXPLORer and SMan
Anyone know any? apart from 'smurf'
Hi Guys,
I know this isn't a hitchiker support forum but all their links appear dead and no DNS regsitered for their [email protected] email address.
So here goes.
I have a Hermes (obviously) a.k.a. T-Mobile Vario II, it has the standard T-Mobile ROM on it and I am open for upgrade ROM's if they are likely to help / improve the device.
I have installed Hitchiker to the standard place having installed Dot Net compact and it works in as much as it can see my wireless network etc, but it then does something elese after connection which causes the following error.
I have tried re-installing both hitchhiker and dot net..
Code:
Hitchhiker.exe
NullReferenceException

Hi Matt,
I had similar thing (crashed at same time, but slightly different error codes etc ... but I am on An orbit / Artemis). Before I 100% Blame Hitchhicker, I also got an error message on installing .net 2 ... but otherwise seemed OK. I did a search on 'Hitchhiker' and .. got some VERY bad feedback - people having their systems trashed by it. So decided to uninstall both it and .net2.
to be safe.
As an alternative I found pocketWinc ... which seems to offer much the same, without .net2, and (and the hype ?). I've not tried it yet but will let you know.
Sorry no help for the problem identified, but just wanted to balance the picture on Hitchhiker. I doubt there's an application out there that does not cause problems for a proportion of people. So much depends on how you hav things set up and what other applications are installed.
For me to date (7 months) I have not experienced any problems with either .net or Hitchhiker. In fact I recommend Hitchhiker as for me and others it has helped to sort out wifi connection problems by automating various of the settings and renewing the IP automatically when necessary. In fact on quite a few occassions it has been the only app. to get me connected again.
I do not however run Hitchhiker all the time. I use it to create the connection enter the settings and once connected I close Hitchhiker and the wifi connection. I then let PIE or other browser connect automatically without going through hitchhiker first.
I did have on the two occasions that I had to install hitchhiker note that when first run it comes up with an error. A soft reset cured this on both occasions.
Perhaps the advice for others is that if you have anything unusual or any more specialised settings needed for your connection then perhaps don't use hitchhiker. If your connection is a plain old vanilla type with standard router, wep key and so on, then it can do a very good job at sorting out connection issues.

May be the same problem I had with Hitchhiker - always got an error message like the one above until I installed MSN Messenger (which doesn't come as standard on my Hermes), then it worked fine.
If you already have MSN messenger then make sure you login at least once through MSN Messenger. The error message gives the clues as it says something about MSNmessengerautologin enabled.
Hi friends,
I was found the same problem.
I solve it easily in this way:
1. switch on Hitchhiker followed by it minimize
2. swith on the wifi module
Black Eagle
So i installed hitchhiker and ran the app, it started smoothly, found my work wireless network, and connected to it! I was so happy because ive been having issues using wifi anywhere but at home.
So when i went to close the application down ( just hitting the x) it threw an error and froze my PPC.
Is this because i was using Hitchhiker 4.0 Beta on WM6? should i downgrade the program to 0.32?
Or is there any other programs that seek out wifi signals and assist with connecting just as hitchhiker does.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Well as you know some others have had problems with WM6. However some folks had issues with WM5 - though I never have.
You do not say if you tried it again after that first time it crashed on closing? If not try again. Quite often after first installation it may show a memory exception error but it's worth trying again. As you say it is a superb help at obtaining that connection. You should know though that Hitchiker saves it's settings and you may find that you can succesfully connect without the application having once used Hitchiker to make the first connection. Hitchhiker is also good because it allows you to cut and paste long WEP keys - this is not permitted in WM5 native application.
Mike
I tried about 6 times, both with versions 4.0 beta and 0.32.
And now it wont connect to that network? I was surprised on how fast and efficient this program is, it connected to the network without any problems, (aside from crashing afterwards) and now it wont connect at all, and it's not crashing anymore!
I'm using Pro Black 2.0 Is there a more stable version of WM6?
same problem here. program is nice - if work. but work only few minutes, before crash. I tested it only on WM6, not WM5. Till now I did not find any way how to "repair" this problem. Nevermind, I using WiFi occasionally and I have two same AP´s on different places with the same settings (it is more as 300 Km between this places) so I need set only one settings in wifi control panel.
Hey all,
After logging on msn, my phone signs out automatically after a short period of time of not using MSN. This is something i want to fix, but can't find any options or settings to do so. I want to be perma logged.
However this is not the issue, the issue is, after my msn logs of automatically, i can't sign up anymore. It either stays trying to sign in or just gives me a message that there are problems with my connection (internet still works when this shows up) and that i should try later.
The only way to fix this, is to reboot my phone. After a while this becomes very annoying and i can't figure out the cause. And of course, after rebooting, msn works but if i don't use it or the phone goes on stand by, this problem reccurs it self everytime.
Anyone that can help? thanks.
Some info on the phone
Unbranded
Manila : 2.5.19211519.0
ROM: 1.66.404.1 (NLD from htc website)
Radio: 2.06.51.07
I have never done any flashing or fancy stuff on this phone, i don't got the brains for that, i only updated the rom once.
That's a known problem wih no solution, just forget the original MSN and use Palringo.

Second recommendation for Palringo, as Beejive support for Windows Mobile has ceased.
I am having issues with Palringo though. After using Palringo Premium for several months, I have started having a problem with it on my HD2, unbranded using T-Mobile UK.
It connects to Palringo servers, logs into my various messengers and then stays connected for about 30-60 seconds, disconnects from Palringo then reconnects up.
This happens when on WiFi or cabled up to my PC using my home internet connection or using G/3G/HSDPA phone connection. Palringo forums seem to be devoid of help either.
First time in several months that Palringo has became an issue for me and my case seems to be isolated.

Oke thanks for the heads up.
I was told to use ebuddy, but that requires Java i think. I believe the HD2 has that, but i can't get type any login information on ebuddy. When i press on the keyboard, no letters appear on screen. So i guess it is a Java issue or something, because i can't get any java games to work either.
