Hello,
When I turn on my MDA Compact, I'm met with a box asking for a password.
The password has been set by my girlfriend, who has forgotten what it was!
It's only numbers and it's only 4 digits. Any way to get around it without doing a hard reset? Cheers.
As I know it there is no feature like that built in... so it's probably essential to know what kinda software is asking for the password.
There's no software on it at all. It's definitely a Windows Mobile 2003 feature.
I cannot, however, remember exactly where to find the option for it.
The phone was hard reset the other day so there's definitely no third party software.
Unfortunately, ActiveSync also asks for the password. I've receieved messages and stuff since the password went on and I have a feeling that one or two of them have been quite important, so I'd rather not do a hard reset to fix the problem.
Any advice?
That's the built-in security feature. Settings->System->Security I think.
And yes, with the feature on, you can't active sync it as well. That's to prevent un-authorized access to the unit.
The best bet you can get is to bruteforce your way into the unit from a PC with activesync. There are only 10,000 possible combination, which should be pretty fast for a PC to bruteforce in. You might want to search the net for bruteforce on activesync.
BTW, it is rather weird that the unit has been set with a forgotten password and being used without once activesync. What do you use the phone for? Just phone? You sure you are not trying to gain unauthorize access to your gf phone?
It is a wm2003 feature. Just go Settings->Personal->password and voila! Unfortunatelly the only obvious way to get rid of it is to hard reset your device.

Hehe, no, my girlfriend has a Nokia.
She likes playing with my phone though so she was wandering through it last night, set a password and then decided not to tell me. Then I tried to use it earlier to find it asking for a password and she can't remember what it is
Women!
I can't find anything on brute force, do you know of anything in particular?
I have the password now but whenever I enter it the pda freezes...
Women have problems remembering passwords. I have to keep a note of password for my gf.
Anyway, since you have the password now, try active sync it?

I have a JasJar and when I switch sims the mailboxes keep disappearing. I still see them in the TODAY screen but when I try to select them they are nowhere to be found. I also try to manually go to messaging but they are missing from there too. I keep creating new boxes and they are starting to number up Yahoo1, Yahoo2 etc.
Help Me.
Thanks.
Yeah i have experienced the same thing, whats seems to work for me is making sure you close down all apps before a soft reset or sim card change, go to start settings system memory running program list and stop all
This works for me every time now and i no longer have to set up my mail accounts
All you need to do is to turn off your device off for a while (a couple of seconds will do) before you reset.
It's because WM5 caches data to speed up the device a bit, and if you reset your device before it gets a chance to permanently write the data, it gets lost.
Best thing is to shut off before you do a reset, in case you lose data.
Well I sent mine to service, switched the mainboard and i can soft reset at anytime now, never looses any data any more.
Same Rom and config but the problem is completly gone

Which Universal device did you have exactly?
I have a Qtek 9000 that seems to be forgetting its authentications and I can't figure it out. Nothing else seems to be wrong with it which leads me to think it HAS to be a software issue, but I can't pin it down!
The only weird things I'm experiencing: Bluetooth devices lose pairing (device redetects them and asks for PIN), Wi-Fi access points get wiped clean (get prompted for WPA keys), and infrequently the Exchange Server password in ActiveSync and the GPRS login information to Cingular are asked even when "Save password" is set.
Qtek 9000 from Dangaard Norway
Min wiped Email settings, Wlan, and some GPRS settings
Don't know about BT, dident use it before i sent it back.
Thanks Bosjo, I was beginning to think I was the only one, or that it was a software issue.
I believe it's related to the fact that the IMEI temporarily disappears from the phone, so it loses authentication of itself and therefore the devices or credentials its encrypted with.
I posted full details here http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=797931 and will likely be shipping it back to the supplier tomorrow for replacement.
That's true, I totally forgot about the Imei disapering.
It also failed to display the radio version.
I know for sure that they actually switched the mainboard cause I have a different MAC adress, haven't checked the Imei number though.
It's a bit funny that this is a hardware error, one would think that it should forgett all settings then and not just pieces off it
Got the same problem. Im seeing my mail account on the today screen but can't access it, if i search for the e-mail's i can find them but can't access them. Anyone find a workaround or where can i delete my mail account i had before it dissapred, becuase now if i try to add the mail account again with the same name as last time it says that i alredy got a account but i can't edit it :/... Please help
damn, nobody found a solution for this? search thru the registry twice without a result ;/
does this happen only when you take off the battery?
another one ....
any solution for it....
regards
ady: nah when i do a soft reset
can't find it in somewhere in the registry either so don't know how i could remove this damn buggy thing :/
Ok my brain is about to explode…Does the bbconnect service do anything other than the push mail? I know this sound like a stupid question but bear with me.
I installed 4_1_.0.0.67 on my tytn and all hell broke out
- The blackberry software has hijacked the security login screen I had set up originally from my numeric touch login screen to a goggle-like field for which I have to either open up the keyboard or use the useless onscreen keyboard. If I shut down the security from the ‘blackberry security’ icon and go back to the tytn installed ‘lock’ icon it takes me back the 'blackberry security' screen anyway.
- I now have two user information bars and two device locks on my today screen. I know I can remove them both but dang…department of redundancy department anyone?
- switching between applications has slowed down to a crawl including the touch screen freezing for aprox 10-20 seconds each time I move between tabs and closing apps.
And to top it all off my incoming calls started being diverted right to my mail box. No ringing.
Had to nuke the bbconnect software and even that didn’t resolve the incoming calls problem and had to do a hard reset on the phone
I’m thinking I will kill the whole bbconnect package and save myself some coin as everywhere I go I have access to some wifi network anyway.
Sorry for the rant but am I missing the big picture here? Is there more to the blackberry connect service.
BTW I'm on a Rogers branded HTC TyTn with no modifications
BBC4 does make the PDA slower and does replace the original device lock by its own (which is terribly bad). Aside of that it works like a charm.

So it lookes you have to choose from 2 bad solutions....
- Remove the software
- Have bad performance
Isn't there another app which makes it possible to connect?
Thx all!
True, true. It is quite a load for the Tytn but at least I don't see that my device gets unstable.
I hope you know that you can disable the BB device lock? Just use Memmaid and disable BB's startup service.
But consider: you won't be loved by your company's sysadmin if you tell him that, and it is indeed a security loss. But you can replace it with a better locking software then.
Cheers

Oh Sh!!T... I just changed the bbsecurity service to manual from automatic, now I cannot get back into my TyTn... does anyone have a quick fix other than HR... I've tried SR several times, but that didn't work... I can connect via ActiveSync, I just need to start the BBSecurity service, then I can input my password (theoretically anyways) and should be fine... I used Memmaid to make this change... Just another example of using advanced tools without knowing the ramifications....
I guess i should have asked for more clarification first...

Hi, I experienced the same once. I am afraid, there is no way out but HR...
You should stop the service, not delete or manual start. I.e. after each SR you will be asked for the BB password, but once stopped, it won't ask again (till you SR).
other srvices
I use mail2web's free services and it works great and you cant beat the price and there is not that big of a deal with a delay of a few minuts or less and it is push hope this helps after HR
I just use bbconnect 2.x
works fine without those annoying 2 points you mentioned
in my experience, if your company only supports BES, then it is best to carry a blackberry device. the only way around this is if your email admin would be willing to set up a forwarder for your account. using a service like mail2web is ok, but only if you can get that exchange / groupwise forwarder set up.
My friend lost his HTC-Wildfire ( India, Bangalore).
There was no tracker enabled, is it possible to request HTC to block the device based on IMEI number? I read somewhere, it is not yet possible in India ( the blog-post was about a year old).
Any other suggestions?
HTC will not do it. Your mobile operator will do it, but, it needs a FIR from your local police station, and, as expected, it is a process full of hassle, unless you have 'contacts'.
And I heard, mobile operator keep asking to go back to device manufacturer. ( we work at SIM level, and not device, unless it is locked).
Then perhaps I should let the 'finder' enjoy his luck for now.
As I said, its a hassle filled process. From what I read and heard, it is the mobile operator who should do it, because, all of them have access to a global database of stolen phones. All they need to do is simply add your IMEI to this global list, and it is locked for use with any sim - any network. Obviously, its a process filled with legal red tape, which is why they are uncooperative.
I think when we are using android market, Google will be having our imei/serial number. Don't know if that helps to track the phone ( maybe not ). But I think everyone with android phone must be using market.
And if the person who got the phone wants to use wildfire without a sim or any other internet networks, then u can do really really nothing. All we should do is to protect our phone from being lost.
You could also try Plan B,if it works in your country. It`s an app that installs itself when the device connects to the market and then sends you the location of the phone.
Hope it will work for you^^

That was the first thing I did, but I think I was late by hours. By that time the device was offline.
ALso, there was a 'pattern' based unlock password. So, if the person goes about reflashing the ROM (himself, or whoever he sells to).. then that wont work.

It's already lost unfortunately.
Besides, atleast as far as I know, mobile thieves are today much more intelligent. They will first flash and format your phone before even attempting to use it (They switch off your phone immediately after picking it - happened to me once). Also, another aspect is that it is hardly ever the thief who will use it. He will sell it at first opportunity.
^@3xeno
Exactly.
I had no hope from planB, but I still did it - just in case.
Even if it works, the accuracy of location would be very important.
I can be evil and go all-out to get IMEI blocked. But just thinking whether its worth the hassle ( its more of a revenge), as they say, it wont help to get the device back.
Or should I let the 'receiver' enjoy his luck.
As i can remember there is a app in the market called 'plan B' which helps to track your phone even after it is lost. Log in to the market with your pc and search for it.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA Premium App

Of course he can install "Plan B" remotely in his device from PC android market without any confirmational messages (but provided only if his gmail account is still associated with his phone. This happens only if his sim card was unchanged and i dont think that is the case).
It would be nice if google gives some more security to keep the gmail account attached to the phone.

I had that feeling almost two months afther buying it: you can simply pull out the sim card of the device and start it up, resulting in having access to the persons mails and contacts. You can even send mails if you enable wifi.
Solution for that: the pattern unlock. Most of the time annoying, but thiefs will have to hard reset the phone to get past it, loosing all the contact with my mail and google contacts.
EDIT: or at least I hope so, never really tried to see if there was a way to get past the unlock code (accept when you get called, but I really hope that the thief is not someone who has my number )

A typical thief wont be able to get past 'pattern-unlock'. However, in hands of a hacker, with adb - everything is possible with sufficient time and motivation.
Typical thief would either sell it, or try to use it using different sim ( your best hope for any post-theft-tracking possibility).
Irony is that, pattern lock saves you from un-educated 'thief' misusing your data. But, on the other hand it motivates them to reflash the ROM, thus eliminating any chance of u tracking it.
In hands of even bigger experts, even IMEI-lock wont stay for long. I am sure there are people who know how to spoof IMEI. But I would imagine that is very small community.
Yes it all depends on the person that finds/steals the phone but better to try and fail than not try at all.And yes the Plan B requirement is that the person that has your phone uses your gmail account login on the market. With pattern lock the one that finds it would have to flash it as akshayxyz said so it all depends on the settings/luck or whatever ,but still there is no harm in trying.
After all what are the chances that someone with knowledge about these things finds your lost phone, and if that was the case then your friend has really bad luck.
I lost my phone and i used it just in case,I even kept the same password in the hope that one would log in with it.It didn`t help me since as i found out later my lcd cracked when it fell out of my pocket ,but after i got it back(the person that found it came into the store i work at and asked how much would the replacement cost) and loged in the market the app installed itself,so try it.
No harm done and its just a few clicks on the net^^.
So i am helping out my Teachers son, whom fell down and got brain damage "Memory loss" and can't remember anything.
The problem is, yes i could reset the phone and all that. But there is business things on the phone and other passwords for hes laptop and what not. So i can't do that.
i have been researching google on how to bypass and it is possible. But the phone does not have USD Debugging enable or anything custom on it.
So, i can't really get behind the phone.
So i was hoping, if there was anyone out there. That had an idea on how for me to get access to this phone. Bypass the password somehow. Can't use ADB either because of USB debugging not being enable. Then i could just delete the password file by command. But i cant
I have a client who's wife died recently. As with any situation where the spouse dies at home, the police did a full investigation and went through all the computers and phones and the like and returned them to him. He desperately wants to get to the data on the phones, but cannot, as he does not know the PIN code to either. He has tried birthdays for the kids and every other things he can think of. He now only has 9 attempts left to get the PIN right, and fears the data will be lost if he gets it wrong. Is there any way to get to the data on these phones? Obviously we don't want to factory reset and risk losing everything. Any suggestions/ideas for help?
Only 2 ways. One is to use Samsung find my Mobile and the other is to use Google find my Device. Of course you might need to know the email and password. There's no way to bypass the PIN on Android 9 or 10 from the phone itself.

So, she never registered the phone with Samsung, so the Samsung Find My Mobile isnt an option.
However, I have logged into the email and used the Google Find My Device. It lists the phone, the service is active, but the Gooogle FMP service says it cannot locate thee phone. Phone is powered on, SIM is inserted, and the service is active, as I can call and text the phone with no issues
If 'smart lock' was enabled, you could go to her favorite places (possibly their home) and the device would automatically unlock itself. The last option is to go to a Samsung service center with all documentation.
