I recently joined this forum due to my coming into possesion of a couple of SX56 phones.
Currently, I am a cingular subscriber- (under two year contract, so that won't change anytime soon.).
The device I am currently trying to get to work is unlocked.
Model PW10B1
Rom Version A.30.09 ENG
ROM date 01/01/04
Radio Version A.33.02
Protocol Version 1.3.3
I've been searching these forums for the last three days, and have become more bewildered and piqued with the more I read. In essence, I'm totally lost on how to effect RSU changes here.
My SIM card loads just fine, all the contacts appear, phone will make a call, but connectivity sucks hind t*t. ie; dropped calls, single bar in areas my old phone had four bars ect ect.
I like the current OS. ( I use MS reader extensively).
Questions:
1. Can I keep the current OS and change the RSU to try to get better connectivity?
2. What are the steps to effecting this operation?
3. If the responders are going to tell me to 'search the forums for this already covered to death topic' , at least give me a decent search string to use. Everything I've tried comes up with 4000+ results and that's a hellova lot of results to wade through.
In advance, I appreciate any simple, direct answers and will try to answer any questions in the same manner.
Hmmm, I got the RS to upgrade via activesync with RSU V6.25.02 Now the device only boots in safe mode.
The upgrade finishes, but continues to say do not disconnect from pc.
Never mind--upgrade worked,,,,now to see if the signals are better.

OK.. so I am new, and excited. I have had alot happen to my trusty old tmobile pocket pc phone over the last two days.
First, I got it unlocked by tmobile two days ago and then switched to ATT. Big big plus for me here where I live as my tmobile service would not work at home, SMS and voicemail notifications were rarely recieved. So far so good with ATT, in fact I get the notifications almost instantly, and I have FULL service with ATT at my home now.
Ok.. then yesterday and today I got interested in the idea of upgrading to the 2003 software. Went ahead and bit the bullet and did it. So far so good. I am now running:
ROM Version: 4.00.21 ENG
ROM Date: 8/11/03
Radio Version: 6.18.00
Protocol Version: 324e4
I have not noticed any real issues yet. I have noticed that it locked up on me once when changing a theme I believe. But I did a soft reset and the change was made, I then changed it to another theme to test and no problem.
I dont seem to have the sliding backlight settings I noticed some where else. But I do think like the signal bar meter better as it is clearer now to the eye when you have even one bar. As well as love the mute, and the dual volume slider.
I thought I read there was a higher version radio stack some where, but I have to find that again.
All in all very happy. Happy with the new ROM and tools and forums made available by XDA-Developers, happy with ATT service and hope to be reporting back more good news in the future.
ok.. figured out the sliding backlight
I guess I got confused and thought the sliding backlight control I saw was related to the 2003 ROM, when in fact I guess it was seen by me on the XDA version 2. So, that clears that up for me.
Now to just get the newest radio stack...

No problem on the radio stack, I just need confirmation on what network you're on AT&T or T-Mobile so I'll know which stack to send.
Also I'll need an email address to send to, PM me on that.
BTW good work on the upgrade.
thank
OK.. radio is now updated to A.20.10 which should be the latest ATT radio version correct ? I have noticed one odd thing about after I upgraded to the ATT radio is that it no longer says what network I am connected to as it did with the tmobile radio.
I also noticed something stange with the 2003 software and GPRS. Seems there is no "end" option to end the GPRS connection.
All in all I am pleasantly surprised about how easy and smooth all has gone in doing all of this. I like the always connected GPRS.
thanks
Yes you are correct A.20.10 is the latest ATT radio stack!
Good obs on noticing that the AT&T stack doesn't show what network you're using, it was also the first thing I noticed too!
Yea the only way to end GPRS now its to press the Red phone button or buy Spb GPRS Monitor

Congratulations on the unlocking! 8)
As far as upgrading to Pocket PC Phone edition 2003 you can build your own from Jeff's kitchen at:
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen/
or you can download it from Yorch's web site at:
http://www.yorch.net
Note: its located under software.
BTW what radio stack does your SX56 currently have if its less than A.20.10 you'll want to upgrade that too?

I have Qtek 1010 and I have flashed ATT new released A.30.09 ENG. Generally it works fine.
Sometimes, and I am unable to observe when and after what operation, it just searches and searches for the network (that is the indication I get at the bottom of the antenna icon). It never finds the network, the "turn off phone" or "turn on flight mode" function also does not work. Soft reset does not work. It becomes terribly sluggish. The only way out is hard reset.
Has this happened to anyone? Is it a radio stack problem or the OS problem? It has happened to me all the time: when I had original Qtek ROM (I think version 3.14, after I changed it to version 3.16, with 4.00.05, 4.00.11 (cooked).
One more observation: Sometimes everything else is working fine, but the GPRS does not connect at all. It says the remote modem is not responding or something. When I turn the phone off and back on, it starts working!
It's not really a big issue but it is certainly annoying. I have bootloader version 5.15 and Radio Stack version 3.23.01
Try the GSM menu in the bootloader and select "Reset GSM" ... plz do NOT select a different band!!
Thanks for the suggestion. Sorry, I forgot to mention that phenomenon - If I enter the bootloader, I don't get the usual "GSM OK" prompt and hence can not access any menu under bootloader.
maybe you need to reflash or change the RSU, but since it's the most risky tasks, I wouldn't recommend doing that except it's really annoying, and your better do it through your operator or qualified place.
Thanks.
That is exactly why I am avoiding doing it. I have read so many sad stories about crashed devices while flashing RSU (though I have done it once and it was successful - but I would think a million times before doing it again).
First and foremost, I must know that the problem IS indeed associated with RSU. Next is, what RSU upgrade is suitable for my device? Our service provider has no idea whatsoever that this type of device does exist! I had a tough time finding out GPRS settings for my device. They do provide and it does work, but they are more familiar with people using laptop computers with mobile phones as their GPRS modems.
I believe the best RSU for Qtek for Asia is 3.25.01 ... I had it before changing the mother board and it was pretty stable ... http://www.carrierdevices.com.au/do...ic&PHPSESSID=36cb61b97c050374d946824d537f3af5
Good luck ...
Hi,
First off, this forum has been a life saver. The phone works, but certain annoyances exist.
My wife wanted the JasJar, but the price points I saw were unattainable. I finally was able to grab a similar device off eBay. I bought an Orange SPV M5000. Thought it would run on t-Mobile USA no prob.
I got the phone with the SIM-lock on and an outdated ROM. Came accross your posts and found the universal unlocker. That worked wonderfully! Thanks. Then I tried my wife's SIM card. No luck. Put in mine... that worked. So, called T-mobile. What a bunch of tech-unsavvy folk. They sent me to a retail store to try a new SIM card. Turns out that my SIM card is from back in the Voicestream days.
Anyway, imagine my frustration. Did a lot more searching around the forums and found that a lot of issues may be resolved with reflashes. Ended up downloading the latest AKU-2 ROM from Orange (the one flashed right now). The first flash wasn't too good (blackscreened after flash). As the old saying goes: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again". So, I did. To my suprise, that worked.
Here are the good things:
1.) the SIM lock did not reappear (a fear that I had at first)
2.) My wife's T-Mobile SIM card was now recognized by the device
All good, no?
Well, not quite. I have all the "Orange" customizations on the device. You know: network, "orange world" (whatever the hell that is), and various other things, like no real "today" screen.
As mentioned by many other nOO-b's out there, there is a huge signal to noise ratio in these forums. I've been searching through the forums for 2 days now trying to ascertain which ROM I should flash to my wife's phone.
So here is the meat of the question:
Would anyone be able to say specifically which ROM I should flash to be able to use the device on the T-Mobile USA network with the least amount of customizations or at least using the T-Mobile USA applicable customizations?
Thanks for your input in advance. As I said, you guys rock (hence the donation )
All the best,
G.
P.S.: Trying to reduce Signal to Noise Ratio

I am running the latest iMate ROM on my O2 Exec with T-Mobile US.... All you really need to do is skip the "customization" at the end of the install (do a soft reset when it wants to start). Even easier - remove the ExtRom installer part completely. Apart from the Power Profiles I haven't found anything useful in that part. (and I have extracted the PowerProfiler and done a separate installer for it.
Radio version 1.09 seems to work fine for me, YMMV
You can replace the startup images too, I put one up with my email address and a warning that the device is registered with the police.

Thank you, lbendlin. I always appreciate this type of help. It would be helpful if you could direct me to where I could find this "latest iMate ROM". Even more helpful would be if you could direct me to someplace that has instructions on removal of parts of the ROMS.
Thank you again, and I apologize about the nOOb syndrome symptoms I may be showing.
This may be helpful not only to me, but others that are searching these forums.
The Wiki is your friend... http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Universal
Back when I installed it the ROM was on the FTP site here. I believe you can also get it through Club Imate.
It doesn't really matter. If you remove the ExtROM part then the ROMs are all the same. You can use the O2 ROM, and do the same stuff.

Excellent. Thank you. This is probably the first link I've gotten that actually pointed me to something useful. Hope this helps other browsers of these forums as well.
I have an O2 XDA mini s as its so called, and an Orange Sim (both UK)
Now I can make/receive calls fine, but when I try to send a message, or goto the "phone" option, I get the message below. Nor do any contacts from my sim show up.
"The phone is not ready. Wait 15 seconds and try again"
Does anyone have some advice to resolve this as its pretty annoying!
I did try a search and got no results, so please forgive me if this is a topic that has been given the run around before.
Regards
Sam
Sounds like the simcard is dirty try taking it out and inserting again happens on probs every1 phone sometime.
Another option would be to go back to your cell provider and request they give you another SIM card
sounds like you might not be getting a strong enough signal to use the phone...or send out messages...consider flashing your radio rom to something higher (do a search for radio rom). radio rom flashing usually won't effect the os or ipl/spl...so you can keep all your existing settings. newer radios have more information on towers...so it has a chance to get a better signal...or at least that's what i've been told...
2.19.11 is common for cingular...but there's a post somewhere on changing something that will let you use higher radios with cingular without too many problems...personally, i'm messing around with 2.69.11 (t-mobile) and i haven't had any problems...
Tried cleaning the sim card to no avail.
As with regards to the radio rom, im sure thats the issue as i can make phone calls fine, so im getting a signal. It just seems accessing the sim card and texting is the issue
Its bugging me because its an awesome phone. Im wondering if its due to it being a different network branded phone to the sim card im using...

if that's the case, you may need to sim unlock your phone? but if you're making and receiving calls, you should be fine...
if the sim card is old, or the service provider was taken over...or something of that sort, maybe your sim card has a problem...something like this was a problem back in the US when cingular bought out at&t...the problem was resolved by consumers going to cingular to get a 64kb sim card rather than a traditional 32kb...perhaps something of that sort is happening there?
I suppose that is a possibility,
I will try using the unlocking tool, but im not sure it would be the sim as it is only 2 months old. I just didnt like the phone i got with the contract so bought this.
I will certainly try. I kinda wish i'd just bought the Orange version of the phone
Oz
@Ozington. If you can make calls, chances are your phone is already unlocked. Did you bought this phone 2nd-hand? The previous users may have done something to it. Soft reset your system and tell us all your stuff (especially the Radio/GSM displayed) displayed on the first boot screen.
Alternatively, if you want to avoid all O2 crap, hardreset your phone and during init setup, soft reset it (poke it) just after you have done your security settings. If it is not using official ROM (e.g. no O2 stuff around to be seen), make a guess on the ROM used, and you can also try upgrading an official ROM (safe to do so).
Hanmin,
The phone was bought from ebay, but was brand new sealed, all in o2 packaging, the seller stated it was unlocked. It was all factory packed and the seal wasnt broken..
The Device info is as follows:
Rom Version 2.21.4.1 WWE
Radio 02.07.10
Protocol 413.1.03
ExtROM 2.21.4.101
Does this mean anything?
Regards
Sam
I'm doubtful that it is factory sealed and unlocked. From the information you gave (although not those I've asked for), seems that your phone ROM is a bit, old. Go to O2 webpage and download an update for the ROM (I'm not sure, but I think they have an updated ROM).
To check your ROM version, tell me the battery icon on Today screen, is it on the top left or bottom left. Top left battery icon means it is AKU2, the updated version.
To throw a spanner in the works the battery icon is in the top right?
Thanks for your help. What info did i miss out? (Please bear in mind i have no idea what im doing with the more technical side of the phone!)
Regards
Sam
I briefly had this problem as well. In my case, I could also receive text messages, but still could not send. I changed OS's and it was fixed. The problem only seemed to happen with one of the new OS6 roms. It was intermittent, and even resetting the phone seemed to solve the problem occasionally and briefly. I have flashed my device too many times, but think it was the most recent Touchflo version that had the problem for me. I was using radio 2.69 Ipl/Spl 3.08. I hope this might help. Good luck.
Orange SIM & Unlocked T-Mobile MDA Vario
Hi Guys,
Just a quick note to say that I have a similar problem with my new Orange SIM.
All the GPRS works fine, calls send & receive OK, POP3 email works a treat but no text messaging and when I try Start > Settings > Personal > Phone .. I get "The phone is not ready. Wait 15 Seconds and try again"
I have no answers to this but from all the searching I have done over the past few days to try and find a cure this problem seems to be common to Orange SIM cards. All I can think of is that the Call Centre Message Number needs changing to get the txt messaging to work.
The phone has worked fine on other networks - no GPRS but text messaging & phone calls
Any advice gratefully received !!
Hi guys first poster so be nice
I've got the same problem but came from T-Mobile to Orange.
My IPL / SPL is 1.03 so I'm going to upload the newer versions on the fourm to my phone and see what happens tommrow. Havn't got the time at the moment but I'll post up how I get on.
Do you guys think this is a good approch to the problem I've got?
Hi Sasyboy
You posted just after me. I got my phone working great on Orange now. It has taken me 3 days !!
You'll have to be careful on how you do it. I just jumped in and it caused me a lot of work and time. and a long period where I thought it was bricked 'cos the bootloader screen stayed on and I lost all comms with the MDA
First make sure the CID is unlocked, you must read this:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435
I wish I had. This may seem a long way of doing it, but you don't want an expensive paperweight do you ??
After you have unlocked the CID and updated everything as per the Dr P stickie (link above) and it is working, you then need to get the Wizard_Love ROM upgrade. I tried after doing all the Mr P instructions in the stickie but still kept getting the "Phone is not ready...." so I decided I then needed the Wizard_Love ROM upgrade. This took me ages to find, I tried to d/load it via uTorrent but only got 25% and then found it on a Russian website - anyway I have it now, and as I said you'll need it, PM me and I'll get it to you.
You will have to download several files and set half a day aside. If you are struggling PM me and I'll get the files to you as I have them now.
I just need to get the Ornge MMS settings right and then all is fine. GPRS, POP3 email, Internet, Txt messaging OK now, SIM manager works fine (didn't even have it before!) and can access all phone settings for call divert etc
Good luck. Any queries I may be able to help, but I'm no expert. I have spent hours looking at this forum and all the answers are there it is just getting them in the right order.
How do all,
Really happy I updated everything and now it all works fine. Thanks to the community. I love this phone and now with updates it's even cooler.
Hello, everyone.
I recently purchased a T-Mobile MDA branded Tytn. I am using an o2 PAYG SIM card and have unlocked the Tytn for this.
Now I am faced with the problem that the signal is *always* weak and I have not yet managed to dial out a successful telephone call. Text messages barely get through and if they do, it takes an awful long time too.
Could anyone suggest anything such as settings or further ROM updates. My current ones are as follows.
O2's official ROM update to Windows Mobile 6 Pro. Says on the "About" screen CE OS 5.2.1238 (Build 17745.0.2.3).
Device Information:
ROM Version: 3.54.206.1
ROM date: 06/25/07 (this is odd as this is in American format, not British. British would be 25/06/07).
Radio Version: Updated to 1.54.30.10 as a possible solution to my problem. No joy.
Protocol version: 32.87.7020.20H
ExtROM Version: 3.54.206.101
If there's any more information you need, please let me know. Bear in mind I am completely new to all this. I'm not savvy on jargon, so if you feel like you're being patronising, you probably aren't.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=360917
Most likely the radio needs changing.
Try having a search in the forum cos I have seen this problem a few times....
Thanks for your reply. I did have a quick search around the forum, but as I am at work (just moved house, no internet) I have to move quickly.
I'll try the stuff that was mentioned on the linked thread.
Thanks again.
Take this into mind, especially the 7th post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356081
I use 1.41 and have never had problems, newest radio isn't always the best.
Oh my. I guess the lesson is to actually research what you're about to shove on your phone. Especially if you're like me.
Mine doesn't seem much different with either radio version. I will be trying a few others and actually searching for them first for info.
Where abouts are you? Middle of a field or a city?
It could be that the antenna is damaged inside.
You could try a few different sim cards, try a few radios/roms and if it still sucks then reset everything to factory settings and use the warranty if you have one.
