Terminal service client : how to ? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Check my device below.
My desktop PC is Windows Professional 2003 SP4
I have zone alarm security suite. I can turn zone alarm off while testing.
1) how do I determine the IP address of my desktop PC
2) how do I determince the IP address of my PPC
3) how do I setup my desktop pc operating system to receive ppc ping and remote control from PPC.
So how do i get this "Terminal service client " working ?
Is my data access safe ?

mmm you have windows 2000 SP4 or windows 2003 SP2? witch one is it. (doesn't matter )
first. remote desktop uses port 3389 and the pocketPC client can't handle any other port. So if you are behind a firewall or router let this port have access! (use a static IP for you PC if you use portforwarding on a router)
goto www.whatismyip.com and the number you see there is your IP. (if you use it a lot make a free dyndns.org account you can make your own domain name like nick.mine.nu instead of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
Goto your windows server to account management. make you user active in the group remote desktop (or something similar)
that would be all. just give a user access-right on a windows PC, and make sure the portforwarding and firewall are configured OK.
if any more questions buy a book windows for dummies

..."Goto your windows server to account management. make you user active in the group remote desktop (or something similar) "...
Is this the PPC owners name, as the user in Windows 2000 Prof SP4 for remote access.
In windows 2000, do I "make a new connection" and select "accept incoming connections" or do I "connect to a private netwrok through the internet" ( VPN )...
Are the any web pages on this, I have been google for a while.

Remote connection to home PC or work

How can i connect my home pc or work pc through my Pocket PC through GPRS.Is it possible by any software.
Yes, this is assuming you have set your home PC to accept incoming Remote connection, and selected which users has the permission.
From your Pocket PC, you can use Terminal Service Client:
- First of all, you must know your home PC's IP Address.
- Launch Terminal Service Client, key in your home PC's IP Address, click connect.
- Once connected, you'll be prompted username and password to log in.
- Always use a different username than the one already logged on, as this will log the current desktop session off.
Well, since most of us use Dynamic IP DSL connection, the IP address changes everytime the PC reconnects. Therefore I have made a small Windows program to be run in the home PC to constantly update its current IP address to a website. So, from anywhere you can log on to this site (just bookmark the site) and check your home PC's current IP address. If you're interested, you can try my program, it's free.
http://www14.brinkster.com/MyLastIP
It's designed to fit a PPC browser.

Make sure, your XP Pro is set to accept Remote connection, from your XP Pro PC:
- Start > Control Panels > System > Remote > Remote Desktop
1) Check "Allow users to connect to my computer"
2) Click "Select Users" to add users which you allow for Remote Connection. * Strongly advise you to set password for each username
Once this is done. You can check your PC's IP address:
- Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
1) Type in ipconfig
2) You will the various IPs for your PC.
If you want to test using your Pocket PC, use your PC's LAN IP. (Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection).
However when your on WiFi or GPRS, you'll have to use your PC's WLAN IP, which you can obtain by using my program I mentioned earlier.
Thank you so much. But can itry to browse my PC dekstop while i have connected to Intenet and using Active Syn while i have docked my Pocket PC in the cradle.

Yes, you can. However, you'll still use your home PC's LAN IP when the PocketPC is docked in the cradle.
I have come out with the guide on how to use MyLastIP client and thet website:
http://www14.brinkster.com/MyLastIP/guide/guide.asp
Its realy nice job!!As you said to use Home PC Lan IP.I dont have netowrk on Ethernet card no cable pluged in.So i cant see Lan IP address. When I tried POcket PC Terminal its not connecting to Server,i was trying by USB Docked PPC.What to do
I gather your not connected to a LAN nor having an Ethernet card installed.
If you want to try out Terminal Services Client from your PocketPC, you may want to download this program called vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html
Once u get this program, you can view your Pocket PC's current IP addresses. If you want to use TSC via USB cradle, take a look under "Serial on USB", the IP address for its Default Gateway should be your PC's IP address.
VPN?
Great thread for me guys. Really helped a lot. Now I can use Terminal Services to remote control my VPN Server which has the public internet IP address.
Next, however, I need to remote operate one of the workstations on my VPN. I tried logging onto the VPN through GPRS that worked. I can TS remote the server, but cannot connect to the workstation. After connecting to the VPN I tried TS with the workstation ip (local network ip of 168.192.xx.xx All I got was a could not connect server timed out message. Any ideas?
Thanks
BTW the LAst IP Address web site is a great idea for us that travel constantly. Thankfully my cable modem keeps my IP address fairly static for long periods at a time. But this will make a great backup for those Murphy Law times when I gotta get on and the modem rebooted! Thanks for a great service.
Steve
Did anybody tried J-Desktop to access via Pocket PC?

Could it be a built-in or personal firewall installed on the workstation? or maybe the workstation's port for Remote Desktop is not opened?
VPN
No, no firewall and remote is open. In deed, I have VNC running on the workstation and after logging on to the vpn i can remote the workstation using vnc viewer. but i hate the interface compared to TS and don't really want to run another server if not necessary. btw i can run the workstation from my xp laptop using remoe desktop connection after logging ono the vpn
thanks for any tips.
steve.

is it possible to..

remote control ma ppc with ma pc via gprs??? how??!??
is there no way to control my pc from my ppc!??!!?
something like remote desktop(windows have..) ??
Most remote control software works using a regular network connection through active sync.
This should thus be possible with pretty much any nework connection, including gprs. Basically just dial gprs, get your phone's ip address, and use that for remote control. I think. In theory. But not fast.
V
Hang on. what are you asking? control you PPC from your PC or vice versa.
Either way, look into VNC.
V
no, i just want to control my pc From my ppc. can terminal services in programs do something for that??
another program?

I would have thought so.
You'll need XP pro for the remote desktop server to be built in though. XP home does not have it.
Failing that, VNC, look here: http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html
You can do this easily via GPRS. Simply connect to the internet via GPRS, and then start up Terminal Services Client on the ppc, insert the ip address of your pc, and step through the authentication dialogue. Of course you will have to make sure that your pc (running WinXP) has World Wide Web Services installed, so as to enable Remote Desktop via the internet.
Hope this helps.
i tried via terminal services , add my ip(of the pc) open the port from router, from my coputer click the allow other people to connect to this pc(also there i added ppc's ip) but could connect. i got an error from ppc.
i am using win xp pro .
i there another application like terminal services ??
VNC?

i download that and a error came out
Did you enter your PCs IP address as seen on the PC, or did you enter the external internet IP? They are 2 different numbers, and regardless of whether you have ports open or not you wont be able to connect directly to the PCs network IP address.
If you're using an ADSL router then go to the configuration or settings page and find out what your internet IP is.
Re VNC
I've used this one quite well:
http://www.parystec.demon.co.uk/pt_vnc2.htm
But there are other free versions I imagine.
V
@JuNiOr_Gr
Which Port did you open for Terminal Services?
Did you then connect to you Internet IP from your PPC or to your local IP?
If you use VNC you have to open the VNC Port (default 5900).
Ist there a software firewall (e.g. XP Firewall) installed on your PC?
For terminal services to work you must have a password set on your XP account. Otherwise it should work with port 3389 forwarded. I use it fine from my Magician over GPRS.
Only thing is that it's a shame you don't seem to be able to turn off desktop background, themes etc that you can from the Desktop version of Terminal Services Client as this would improve speed.

** make sure that you have windows xp pro**
1. download this file onto your pda and run it.
2. make sure that if you are using a router the you open up port 3389... it has to be this port and no other
3. on your desktop goto start/settings/control panel/system/remote and click the box that says "allow users to connect remotely to this computer", that is it you don't need to click anything else
4. open up the program and type in your ip address without the port number then username and password - which must match your windows login and password.

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

Also if your IP's range anywhere within 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, the you're behind a firewall.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org

yes, many athena users use terminal services/remote desktop to reach their desktops or servers. You must be able to get to port 3389 (or other port used for remote desktop) on your home or work network.
rermote desktop
can you explane me how i can do that or please email me [email protected].
thanxs very much

Firstly log into your router and open port 3389.
It is best to test your connection with Wifi first as at least then you know you're halfway there!!
On Vista Ultimate (which is the same as mine) enable remote desktop connections to your computer. This is found in control panel/system/remote (tab) on xp - should be somewhere similar on Vista.
You also need to enable a password on your computer's login page.
You should now be able to log into your pc via wifi by entering your pc's IP address (found by entering IPCONFIG on the command prompt) on the remote desktop mobile display.you will need to enter your login name and password below this. There is no need to enter a domain name.
If you have a static IP address you should also be able to login this way over 3G. However if your connection is dynamic (such as with Virgin Media) you will need to go about it slightly differently. register with www.no-ip.com and they will provide a free static address for you. No-ip runs in the background on your Vista pc and you simply login on your pocket pc with the address they provide (rather than 192....laadeedaa) - for example (yourname).no-ip.biz.
Everything should then go hunky dory.
remote on athena
thanxs very much for the interest.i`ll try it.

Idea | Hamachi + Remote Desktop Mobile

*A Win 7 PC + WM 6.5 Phone
*Computer with nonstatic ip over net connected to net via an ADSL modem.
*Installed hamachi network both on PC and WM Phone.
*Remote Desktop Mobile installed on WM Phone.
????
Can anyone create a tutorial to make it possible controlling PC remotely over Hamachi?
*Domain= No domain [blank]
Why the hell do you need Hamachi for this?
You only need a DDNS service for this. The msot known is no-ip.com. It is completely free. You get a Domain-Name like xyz.no-ip.info and you will be redirected to the current IP of you Machine with a dynamic IP.
If you have a D-Link Router you can use dlinkddns.com for updating ur DNS with ur Router without PC.

this requires you to open your firewall for incoming traffic, which many don't want..
hamachi makes an outgoing connection, and you get a unique static IP.
once connected to your hamachi network, you should be able to open a remote desktop connection to your pc. Just use the specific hamachi IP 5.xxx.xxx.xxx
also make sure in Windows 7 your hamachi network is set to the correct type: if it is set as public, your Windows 7 firewall will block incoming remote desktop connection.
btw, I didn't test this setup lately myself
Hamachi way is easier and safer
Install cab to you WM and exe to your pc.
Create a network (VPN) from Hamachi menu (you can create from your mobile or your PC).
Connect to the network (both from mobile and pc) that you just create ("join to an existing network") via your internet connection (or your home network of course).
Now you can use remote desktop (or any other similar program) from your WM to access your pc from anywhere in the world.
Also you can map you mobile device (storage card) from "remote desktop" menu and transfer files from your PC to your mobile and vice verca.
ps: now i have to go to Thessaloniki center to kick the ass of Greek prime minister xaxaxaxaxa
