Hey together,
I´m searching for an update or something else, so I can use my Wizard in a WPA wireless environment.
Can somebody help me, what I can do???
Thanks a lot
br
Martin
The Wizard has always supported WPA/WPA-PSK Authentication and TKIP Encryption. It is easy to set up but if you use the WPA-Enterprise (NOT WPA-PSK) with 802.1x PEAP or EAP-TLS then it requires Certificates to be installed on your device. Server Certificates can be installed easily by way of a .CAB file but you must enroll for Client Certificates. HTC include a Certificate Enrollment untility the 'Wireless' utility, however this requires a Windows 2000/2003 CA Server and cannot enroll with other CA's.
AKU 3.x added support for WPA2/WPA2-PSK Authentication and AES Encryption, however since a real AKU 3.x update has never been provided for the Wizard there are only hacked versions available (Faria's etc). I can confirm though that Faria's AKU 3.3 ROMs have this support and it does work (I am now only using WPA2 & AES at home and it works well). WPA2 has the same authentication requirements as WPA (i.e. Certificates).
Setting the Wireless AP's up varies on each device type, plus WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK doesn't require Radius server(s) configuring whilst WPA/WPA2 does.

I just installed the Finster cab for WM6's Remote Desktop on WM5. I have an 8125. I can connect to XP desktops just fine. I can connect to Vista desktops fine as long as they do not have "require network level authentication" enabled. I get "An internal error has occurred" if that is enabled. Last, I can't connect to any of my 2003 R2 servers. The 2003 R2 servers are set up to all require TLS mutual authentication for maximum security (corporate requirement).
Two questions...
1. Is this simply a WM5 thing? For instance, the internal equivelent of "schannel" just doesn't support the necessary TLS 1.0 requirement for those features? (or something like that) If I got a WM6 device (or installed one of those WM6 ROMs on my good ol' Wizard), this would work?
2. If this does occur on WM5 and WM6 devices both, how does one fix this? If at all?
Thanks.
EDIT: The phone does have the necessary root CA installed to authenticate the remote servers via SSL/TLS. I sync to Exchange over the air over SSL to the same server I'm attempting to remote into.
Hi,
I'm currently on a HTC Trinity using Mary's 3.3.5 ROM and want to be able to connect to my universities WiFi network but to do so I need to use a VPN tunnel, anyone recommend a good PPC App that will allow me to connect to my universities VPN?
Cheers,

WM6 Pro includes both a PPTP & a L2TP/IPSec VPN client. This will work with most VPN routers & firewalls, however they may not be configured to support it. If you can connect using Windows 2000/XP's built-in PPTP or L2TP/IPSec VPN Client then you can almost certainly connect with WM6's.
A lot if VPN Routers & Firewalls are supplied with a 'free' Windows client that has the documentation geared around it. However most (if not all?) of these products will work with the native VPN client in Windows 2000+ (and WM5/6). I would try and stick with the L2TP/IPSec client but this requires some additional steps over setting up PPTP - on both the client & server (router). It is worth the extra steps in my opinion though.

I have the same problem ... I am not able to connect using the default VPN client ...
Hi,
There's a great review of vpn clients by Menneisyys in the Wiki. It's entitled:
'Access Your Desktop PC From Your Pocket PC!'
I'm sure you'll find it very useful because it would point you in the right direction as regards VPN tunnelling to your Uni's server.

HI!
Thank you for your reply, but this articles are about "Remote desktop" - like solutions for WM - based devises. Not for connecting to VPN.
Did anybody have had any success so far?
Any working 3-rd party VPN clients / Solutions?
Thank you in advance.
Dmitry.

Hi,
You might find Manneisyys' review very long but if you take your time to read it, you'll see that he talks about the various VPN clients and how they compare. VNC, VNC+, etc are all mentioned there.
Just take your time to read it.

Nice article, is the VPN working?
Do you have the WM6 VPN client working? Specifically the ActiveSync -> VPN -> MS Exchange functionality that was there under WM5?

But. Once again: the article talks about REMOTE CONTROL with the use of things like: RAdmin, MS RDP, etc.
This sofware - are remote desktops, so called VNC, not VPN clients in a classic way.
There is a little mess we get at the moment. (I've defenetelly got)
Let me describe in detail:
People need VPN here for many reasons, for me it is:
- to connect to some VPN through WIFI with our WM5 \ 6 device.
In my case- this is a public WIFI internet provider, which has a wifi coverage in the city.
Wifi is open PPTP. I need to type in a login \ pass on the web page I get, to start using the internet in current wifi session.
The ALTERNATIVE way to conect to internet - is to establish a VPN connection over the wifi.
I can successfully do in on the laptop.
With my UNI, WM5, AKU 3.5 - I can connect to VPN with the built-in VPN Client, but the first request to internet (via browser or Messaging send-receive) - drops my VPN connection, as it described here in the forum.
So: we need some software that can work.
I tried so far:
1. BlueFire VPN - just can't connect.
2. Antha VPN - just doesn't work.
I have heard thah on some other ROMs there is no problem with the built-in VPN client for PPTP, will try with some other WM6 ROMs later.
Any solution so far?
Thank you, kiwi992
Thanks to everybody!

Hi! The L2TP/IPSec is a special story.
It is widely discussed here at forum: xda-developers > General discussion > Networking >
Search for *VPN* string on this forum.
This is the: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302520&page=2&highlight=*VPN* one of the success stories.
You need to obtain the certificate from the system administrators of your network. You may also have some "magic" URL in your campus network, where you can download the required certificate. This URL should point to the inranet web page of the web interface of the VPN server.
If your goal is to securely connect to some specific computer on the network, you should use one of the VNC programs: the VNC server part on the computer, and the VNC client on your device.
In any case - first check your certificate \ settings on, say, Windows XP laptop, connected through WIFI, first, then continue with the device.
Good luck!
Dmitry
VPN problems
I don't know if this issue is specific to my device (pharos gps 600 gps phone), or to windows mobile 6 which I'm running.
I can't connect to my vpn through wifi, the reason being is that I cannot associate any connections through the wifi card with the vpn info.
Wifi card doesn't show as a selectable modem in the modem tab next to the vpn tab in the vpn config. Only modems are cellular line modems, bluetooth, and one "hayes compatible com1" which is my usb I would guess.
Does anybody know how I might get around this?
HI to all
I am looking for a working VPN Client (the Iphone has one which is working) to connect my Touch Cruise to the intranet of my firm.
I read that NCP has one, but it is quite expensive ...
is there any other solucion?
For free?
Shrew is working fine on my laptop, but y would like to check something out of mi WinMo Polaris.
I actually am using WinMo 6.1 but if necessary I also could change to 6.5
Thanks
Isidar
OpenVPN has a free client for WinMo but I don't know if it will work for your VPN, give it a shot.
you can use hamachi-0.0.3.1
http://rapidshare.com/files/83751409/hamachi-0.0.3.1.rar (for your mobile)
https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp (for your pc)

i think openvpn is not compatible with cisco vpn since cisco uses ipsec and openvpn uses a simply tunnel created on udp port 1194 (no need for gre, ike,or pptp port's/protocols open).
it's much simpier but work very well and just with the p12 certificate (ok my certificate is 2048bit so i think it is minimally secure, nothing like a dynamic generated rsa key but even better than just a ssh tunnel or something like).
Back in the days of Windows Mobile 2003 I used to use "MovianVPN" to connect to my university network. The software is now superseded by AnthaVPN (www.anthasoft.com). It is designed for Windows Mobile 5 and they have no mention of WM6 compatibility, but I think its worth a shot.
I also read about another product called "Bluefire VPN", but I can't seem to find it online at the moment.
Edit: The above solutions are not free, but the price might be refundable by your company.
Cisco AnyConnect for Pocket PC
There is an application from Cisco itself that you can download and try.
It's based an Cisco's new Anyconnect module
anyconnect-wince-ARMv4I-activesync-2.3.2016-k9.msi

The Cisco device at the other end has to be setup for SSL VPN otherwise Anyconnect does not work. This is somewhat new and SSL VPN licenses are expensive.
Personally I use AnthaVPN on my HTC Touch (WinMo 6.1 Pro) and it works great with our IPSec Cisco VPN (the old way since we're too cheap to buy the licenses for the SSL VPN).
EDIT: And if your company is setup for SSL VPN, you should not need to download a client. Your admin should give you a website and it connects to the router/firewall/VPN concentrator and downloads the proper client for you. Better than going to some random site to download something.
The integrated L2TP/IPSec client?
I have posted previously on here about VPN clients and Cisco Routers & Firewalls. The integrated L2TP/IPSec client works with both Cisco PIX/ASA Firewalls as well as IOS Routers - it is dependant on how these are configured though. I posted two configurations from PIX 6.3(5) and PIX 7.2(4) - both of which I had working. It seems there are some limitations when setting up groups however my testing didn't include this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444948&highlight=Cisco
I was going to test the Group issues someone reported but never got around to it - I have a full-time job as well

AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 2.5
Hi guys
Could anyone post the link for Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 2.5 as it is one of the only vpn client solutions having WM6.5 and Cisco routers work together
Could you propose any other solution for WM6.5 and Group authentication cisco servers
Thanks
I have just downloaded the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, v2.5 and it works a treat thanks for this post, it was released in Aug and works with 6.5
Please note, i legally have a CCO account and valid service contracts for Cisco ASA and VPN gateways.
To the previous poster, please buy relevant CCO access to download.
Hi, I am from Sweden and this is my first post here at XDA.
I got a HTC p3600, it´s upgraded to WM 6.5 and it works awesome.
Now the problem. The WLAN works great at home and other open networks/ if i got the key.
In my school we got WLAN but i can´t connect to it. I find it in the WLAN-list but there it ends. My friend with an Iphone just select the network and then he can insert his username and password, and woila! He´s in.
When i try to connect the server wants a "Certifikat" in swedish. I have tried to do a "Domain enroll" to get it But it always fail.
I think they use Windows Server 2003.
Does anybody understand my bad language? If you wanna know any more, just tell me.
Same problem here, trying for some weeks to find a solution and so far all attempts with different clients failed. I`m sure it`s not a windows server but a cisco concentrator that let`s You access wlan and it seems there is no free client that can communicate correctly with cisco hardware for winmobile. Iphones have a vpn client directly from cisco integrated and can pass without problems. Try to ask Your computer center what concentrator they use and if they know of a client that supports winmobile.
Some forums mention a registry hack that deactivates certificate authentication but just setting it didn`t help. We`re still trying if this might work in conjunction with a locally installed certificate. Try to get the root certificate of Your CA and import it to Your device. Might help. Somehow they screwed up PEAP on mobile clients cause it`s supposed to work without local certificates but alas...

Thanks for the answer!
Would it be possible to to install some kind of program from cisco to make it work?
Unfortunately Cisco doesn`t do any winmo clients, they licensed it to other companies. Tried with Root CA yesterday but that didn`t work, maybe we need a valid client cert too. Have to get a personal one from our uni CA the days.
Try installing secureW2
http://www.securew2.com/node/3
This is a program specifically designed to work with wpa2 networks offered through a radius server. Most schools and universities use a radius server. You will need a local login and password though.
When installed, you can select securew2 in the certificate window of wifi settings, when you try to connect to the wireless network.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried with various clients, none of them worked, securew2 was among them. But maybe it works with fiddyboy.
A page mentioned some older hardware may not cope with mixed wpa modes, maybe P3600 is among them but I really don`t think so...

I am downloading now, will test it tomorrow. Thanks!
Edit: I am not getting it to work. Can someone help me with the settings?
I am sorry, but I don't know what settings to use in your specific case... These settings should be made available by your school or company, most of the time the settings for laptops will give enough information too
which rom do you use to upgrade to windows mobile 6.5
Finally got it to work. We have different WLANs here at our university. I had no luck connecting to our VPN-network so I tried our eduroam WLAN. Eduroam is a roaming network for educational purposes. If You have a login from Your uni/school/whatever You should be able to access the internet from any eduroam network worldwide.
As You said You were asked for a certificate I think Your network relies on the same technologies as ours because I had the same error before. Following explanation:
Our eduroam RADIUS server is certified.
This means our uni gave it a certificate. Our uni was certified by and got a certificate from the DFN (german research net). The DFN was certified by and got a certificate from the german Telekom.
This is called a certificate chain with the DFN as intermediary and Telekom as root certificate authority.
What I had to do is import just the root certificate (from Telekom) to my mobile device by downloading it from our unis webpage, transferring it to the Trinity and just click on it. It confirmed installation and the root ca is listed under the Settings>System>Certificates>Root.
Edit : Normal certs are with *.crt ending. MinMo wants *.cer-files. If You only can get Your hands on *.crt import them into Your PC browser, export from there with DER-encoding and rename *.der to *.cer. That`s it.
Our eduroam RADIUS server authentication is via PEAP.
So I configured the network connection like this:
connects to : internet
authentication : wpa2
data encryption : aes
eap type : PEAP
Connect. When prompted put in Your uni account credentials.
This worked on WinMo 6.1 and 6.5 Without the ValidateServerCert reghack or any other other special program.
WinMo5 failed! Also tried the ValidateServerCert reghack but it`s of no use. Think it`s because WM5 has no wpa2-aes support. If Your RADIUS allows wpa and tkip it may work.
Maybe if this doesn`t work Your server it uses something other than wpa2 or aes. Try different options. Maybe it`s not using PEAP. Ask Your admin but try with a certificate first.
The strange thing is that PEAP was used to avoid handling of certificates; it`s especially there to NOT have to fiddle with them. Anyway, this works here, hope this is the solution for Your location...
you should just buy a protable harddrive or a flash drive and transfer your files onto that and then onto your computer.
Hi, I have same problem, trying to use eduroam on CTU, my Notebook/Laptop WiFi work ok, but I can't connect with TD2 Topaz. I have instaled required certificate, but in options I have no way to set concrete RADIUS server to connect (which is required to be specified in settings on Notebook). Any ideas please? I Also installed securew2, but I can't add Cesnet CA in securew2 options, even it is installed in system (I is present in setings-certificates in WM).
When You have WinMo 6.1 You shouldn`t need securew2 and there is no need to explicitly set RADIUS IP. Have You tried eap-type : PEAP ? What`s the error message if any ?
