Hello guys, I rescently bought a 2gb miniSD card and I started installing all sort of things you know how it is BUT due to this i think i've got a virus, as soon as i connect to activesync I start receiving a message whether I want to accept some strange file name (scrambeled letters & numbers) ending with *.sis.
Any suggestion?
TIA
Hi
This is a Nokia virus, .sis files are nokia specific (as far as I know). These files come usually via bluetooth, according to my infomation, this virus will not harm your device, it runs only on the symbian OS, not Windows Mobile!
Any more info guys? I would like to know more.
Best Luck,
Mohammad Gdeisat

guys jus got my new exec and it is wild! i am lovin it tho m still gonna consider till the 14 days exchange period. anyways jus wanted to get ur opinion on a few things. firstly i tried my vodafone chip, a t-mobile chip and a hutch chip(Indian chip..tho didnt hav any network coz i dont hav international roaming on it) and they all seem to work. i was successfully able to make calls from the vodafone and t-mobile ones and could access the contact list on the hutch one. does this mean that it is doesnt hav a network lock. is there any definate way to confirm if it is or isnt locked.
Also i was wondering that since it is able to access the net like a pc then it must be prone to viruses like one too. so is there any software i can use to prevent this? plz suggest
cheers
It is not locked to a network. As you have seen, this is confirmed by the fact that you can use SIMs from different providers.
Yes, it seems to be unlocked.
Regarding virus, WM5 is built differently. it's like asking why a windows virus won't affect a Macintosh.
If you want one, install the I-mate ROM as it has an anti-virus already included, free
Or, just extract the AV program from the I-Mate extended ROM from the FTP...
even if virus activity is possible, you need to evaluate the overall risks compared to the impact and slow down on the machine.
its just as easy to format and rebuild.
if you use activesync with a pc then its likely it will have virus protection
i copy from safe sources
i surf and take the risk, spent hours and not copped anything. i think the limitations of pie provide alternative benefits from virus activity
A typical virus that runs on your PC wont work on your Universal for the same reason normal programs on your PC wont work on your Universal.
Basically, you are safe from 99.999~% of viruses, since as yet, nobody has really bothered making a virus that runs on an ARM cpu type. The JasJar does come with some type of virus scanner in the extended rom, but everyone just turns that off since it slows down the device.
Hello to everyone, A quick introduction - Im new to the PDA Place if you could call it that, I personally use a Nokia N95 at the moment, And just the other day managed to get hold of an o2 XDA Exec second hand. Unfortunatly for me the devices appears to be in chinese when turned on so as you are aware theirs is not exactly much I can do with it!
I am familiar with the flashing process on Symbian phones and have done it a few times, With this knowledge in mind I thought and assumed I would need to flash this XDA Exec to an english firmware, or ROM as it seems to be called around here. I have been reading through a few threads in regards to updating and have also tried to download a new update off the o2.xda website, But it seems to keep saying I have an incorrect IMEI Number even though I have entered the correct one by typing in *#06#
I found this forum and was hoping perhaps someone would be kind enough to help me in regards to the problem I am having. I believe this device has Windows Mobile 5 and have seen and heard that Windows Mobile 6 has been released. I assume you have to purchase this much like you have to purchase a new copy of windows for a PC. Is this correct?
I had a go at the flashing process, And downloaded this EXTROM Unlocker from a buzz site? I didnt know what to do with it as its a .cab file so I downloaded KDSkamal WM5 Ultimate edition and thought well if I can at least get it to english then its a starting point at least. I double clicked the file inside and went through the update process, Then it said that it was not designed for my device, And this is where I am upto because im lost with what to do now.
Any help, information and/or advice would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Hi there, whenever you try to change the ROM of one of these new Windows CE devices (all those names are the "marketing geniuses" ideas, PocketPC, Windows CE, Windows Mobile), the device verifies that you are installing the "right" type of ROM for your device, as uncle Bill would say, you cannot put anything that you shouldn't suppose to, and by "suppose to" I mean anything that they don't want you to do, I think it's enough on politics.
Anyway, if you try to change the languaje of your ROM, the bootloader will not let you to do so, so we use an special (treatened) kind of upgrading tool.
It is normally inlcuded in the ROM.
If you read the wiki, you should be able to find the whole process, well explained, right now I just can't remember the exact name of this file (something like noIdUpgrade, MaIdUpgrade, or something like this), normally all our programming gurus supply it with the cooked ROMs.
I know how frustating it is at the begining (also considering that you know Symbian), but consider that these questions arise too many times and people get the idea that you come and ask the same question that literally have been answered thousands of times and you don't even want to make some research work.
Again, read the WiKi, it's the perfect place to start with your device, when you get to know some of the jargon, you'll begin to understand many of the things discussed here.
cheers and good luck
Thankyou for the reply, I shall indeed read the wiki. Since I posted that I managed to get hold of an o2 update ROM which I tried to install, as it was doing it where it says do not disconnect it came up with ERROR 101, and that the cable had been removed when it had not. I also tried again and the same thing, Now the PDA wont turn on at all. If I try to press the hard reset buttons it says press 0, but then does nothing. At the moment it seems to be stuck on the bootloader I think you people call it. And wont come out of it :-( looks like I broke it already
Ok, quick udate after alot of messing about and research I finally flashed it, Its now on the newest version of the o2 firmware. Though now its full of o2 rubbish. I tried to install this custom one I pointed a link to in a previous post but when installing it says its not designed for my country. I assume this is in line with your reply but I tried a search for that program and it turned up nothing.

Yes, O2 is full of crap. Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320116
As I suggested in it. KDSKamal's ROM is the best. Better than official ROMs. You can find links on how to upgrade in that thread too.

Hey i had exactly the same problem as you, just bought an O2 Xda Exec in China, and all in Chinese but now I changed my Chinese WM5 to the KDSKamal's ROM, it works perfectly, and it seems stable.
Excellent, Thanks for the replies! I had a good play with it last night web browsing and such, I must say its so much easier than a Nokia N95 I love the software and such on it, Now if only there was a PDA/Phone that had the specifications of an N95 that would be great! I know there is the HTC Tytn but that only has a 2MP Camera I believe.
Anyway I really am pleased I got it working thankyou to everyone.
Now I know the basic process I would like to take it a step further and upgrade to Windows Mobile 6. Is there a way of doing this? I assume I need to get hold of another ROM, I admit I had a look around and found some dead links I assume due to copyright issues with Microsoft but im not sure.
Another question I had, Was I was looking around games you can get games like Riven (Myst series) And Age Of Empires which look just like the PC Version! Wow im overwhelmed by all the stuff you can get. On some of the games I have been looking at it says you need a certain graphics chip or higher in your device, May I ask what is in the Xda Exec? And if its a 3D Graphics chip thats good at running games.
How would I find out if the device is unlocked? Just popping in a card and trying? As I have a contract with T-Mobile where I get free internet, So it might be worth using my T-Mobile sim card on it instead of on o2.
The case isnt in the greatest condition, The screen and keyboard are perfect but there are a few scratches and blemishes on the case of the PDA, Is there an easy way of changing this and buying a new one to swap it with? I know it involves taking the machine apart which im comfortable with doing, Preferably getting a non o2 one would be great.
I hear about the radio and such, Does this device have a radio built into it?
Also is there anywhere I could either purchase a copy or download a copy of the manual? Im not sure how this device actually turns off, It seems to just go into standby mode when I press the power button.
Other than that, Thankyou very much so far!
again check the wiki my friend.... all answers to your questions are already posted there...
if this post is in the wrong place, let me know where it should be, or move it for me and notify me... thanks and sorry if posted in the wrong place...
I tried using the howto to run the OPIE-II linux distro, and it starts up just fine, looks great and very promising... BUT...
I cannot make a phone call. The message 'no modem' keeps appearing, and won't go away.
I noticed some settings panel, mentioning the modem selection, where I could select the serial /dev/ttyS0 at 115200bps, a SIM:local and SIM;hostpc (correct me if I'm wrong), but none of them seem to resolve the issue.
Now I'm having an issue in WM2003SE too with the reception and service of this device (MDA compact version), not making calls and telling me there is "no service", although my other HTC cell (trinity) next to it does it all, full coverage...
My questions are:
- what device or location do I need to point the modem to? /dev/...?) and at what speed if necessary..
- how can I troubleshoot this issue?
- how can I connect onto the dropbear ssh server (address, port, user, pass, ... to get into the phone)
Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks for the help...
Where you download "Opie-II xanadux" and how run on magician ?
Hi

I had the same problem. Apprently the Magician isn't supported fully by Linux yet.
And I had this problem... With opie 1 and 2

I'm not sure, but I had similar issues on a Universal device...
The trick was to pin-disable the sim card from WM5/6...
go to the security settings in Windows Mobile, where you can set another pin, and disable it there...
I know it's not secure! but it's a possible solution for this issue...
I know the Universal (Qtek 9000 and similar devices) has an issue with the sim-unlock-pin stuff, and it might be the same on Magician.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm not able to confirm on mine, as the radio reception is dead on my Magician system, still waiting for a quote from a UK-based repair shop... or another phone to be bought...
If anyone knows a good repair shop for HTC phones, pref'ly in the BeNeLux area, or around, please let me know!
Thanks, and good luck
Once my phone has reception again I'm restarting imaging and testing on my device...
1 - Try to install OpenMoko - all work. Sound,GSM,Blootuth.
2 -Peopls who coddding OPIE, say :"The GSM is working on the Qtopia image (kernel), the fact is that the Phone application does not know how to handle it."
I have tried the opieII image and it is really nice!!! everything works quite quick and smooth, and i love the keyboard
I get the same error with the modem problem. i would use it as an everyday device with the linux image i was that impressed with it
I got the image from here http://www.linuxtogo.org/~htcpxa/htcmagician/
I tried the openmoko image from that site but i get errors in the image when i try to boot it.
I managed to install the openmoko image from this site http://grigio.org/howto_openmoko_htc_magician_s100_dual_boot_wince and while it did boot ok, it too had no gsm capability and i found it slow and hard to use. The image on there does seem to be nearly 12 months old and so there could be something so much better out there.
Anyone know where there are any newer images for the magician?? i know the openmoko project is still going full steam, but im guessing that it takes a bit of work to get the latest version of that onto a magician (adding in specific drivers etc)
anyone with information or needing help (i will try) can email me or msn me on [email protected]

To start with: I already posted my findings on USB connections with a mobile phone and windows XP in the thread that handles a USB utility
By Accident I just stumbled upon the next and I think it is worth posting.
As I connected my windows mobile 6.0 on an HTC MDA vario II today it suddenly failed to find my device.
To sync anyway, I connected it thrue Bluetooth and that worked fine.
Then: I wanted to sync some new tracks via my Windows Mediaplayer on the XPSP2 machine. As it seems it is unseen through bluetooth.
I considred that this time, the only difference between yesterday (when everything worked fine) and today, was changing my SIMcard from the WM6.1 HTC to this one.
SO I took it out.
And hey....my device (that I had already removed the USB devices) was seen; installed and started syncing like it was yesterday.
It seems T-mobile has some strange SIM-card that makes it impossible to use the USB - Activesync functionality when the SIM is in the phone.
This goes only for WM 6.0 because my WM 6.1 (HTC Vario IV) does not have that problem at all. Maybe there is some developer with any idea as to how this might happen. There are many issues on the net concerning the same symptoms.
It keeps us busy and does make you want to take your new WM 6.1 phone on holidays instead of taking the oldie and keep an eye on that one.
It is also not so very sustainable because I did not have this problem the first year. Before the T-mobile upgrade.....
PLease tell me we are not being scr**&$#@ for marketing and explain there is a perfictly logical reason for this unforseen behaviour. I'd love to sync without taking my SIM card out. Should I get in touch with T-mobile?
Good luck to everyone who stumbles upon this thread for a reason and let me know solutions if found.
I bought a Dell Streak in the UK a month ago and brought it back to Denmark.
After installing the PC suite tool on the SD card a bunch of new processes popped up in the WinXP SP3 task manager:
Logger.exe
Generic.exe
CapabilityManager.exe
TCPVBTServer.exe
After having run this OS for 4 years with no viruses I almost had a heart attack!
I did a virus scan and something got removed from the PC (sorry, I didn't write it down) and now it seems everything's quiet again.
I've been researching a little and found this thread:
community.sprint.com/baw/message/184182
These ppl seem to think the HTC sync toy is to blame for these (unfortunately named) processes.
Here's my question:
Why do I have them when my wife's Tattoo has never been hooked up to this PC?
What do they ACTUALLY do?
Regards
Jess
