new exec...help wid a few issues - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

guys jus got my new exec and it is wild! i am lovin it tho m still gonna consider till the 14 days exchange period. anyways jus wanted to get ur opinion on a few things. firstly i tried my vodafone chip, a t-mobile chip and a hutch chip(Indian chip..tho didnt hav any network coz i dont hav international roaming on it) and they all seem to work. i was successfully able to make calls from the vodafone and t-mobile ones and could access the contact list on the hutch one. does this mean that it is doesnt hav a network lock. is there any definate way to confirm if it is or isnt locked.
Also i was wondering that since it is able to access the net like a pc then it must be prone to viruses like one too. so is there any software i can use to prevent this? plz suggest
cheers

It is not locked to a network. As you have seen, this is confirmed by the fact that you can use SIMs from different providers.

Yes, it seems to be unlocked.
Regarding virus, WM5 is built differently. it's like asking why a windows virus won't affect a Macintosh.
If you want one, install the I-mate ROM as it has an anti-virus already included, free

Or, just extract the AV program from the I-Mate extended ROM from the FTP...

even if virus activity is possible, you need to evaluate the overall risks compared to the impact and slow down on the machine.
its just as easy to format and rebuild.
if you use activesync with a pc then its likely it will have virus protection
i copy from safe sources
i surf and take the risk, spent hours and not copped anything. i think the limitations of pie provide alternative benefits from virus activity

A typical virus that runs on your PC wont work on your Universal for the same reason normal programs on your PC wont work on your Universal.
Basically, you are safe from 99.999~% of viruses, since as yet, nobody has really bothered making a virus that runs on an ARM cpu type. The JasJar does come with some type of virus scanner in the extended rom, but everyone just turns that off since it slows down the device.

goodbye sidekick 3, hello MDA!

hey everyone.. just signed up and wanted to say hi.
i just ordered my new MDA, and should be here in a few days! ive had the SK3 for a month after upgrading from the SK2, and its just not what it used to be. Im looking for something with way more functionality other than being cool. Not to mention a more mature phone.
anyway, i just wanted to see if you guys could help me. seeing as how i dont have the phone yet, i wanted to read as much as i can about hacking it up. im aware that the stock phone (USA Tmobile MDA) rom isnt very well, so i need some pointers on where to start...
ive tried searching already, but theres only so many "newbie" threads i can sift through... basically can someone point me into the right direction of everything i need to get started? it would be most appreciated! Wink i guess which rom, how to update, which apps, where to go... lol, basically everything!
ill obvisouly be reading until the day the phone comes (and charged for 12 hours) so i should be more knowledgeable by the time the phone arrives.. but i really appreiciate any help!
thanks!

The first thing to check is that your MDA has the latest ROM (2.26) - intalling this solved a lot of my problems. I have no other "hacks" on the MDA and am now happy with its performance.
I would definitly start by SIM and CID unlocking the phone with lokiwiz (free and available on this forum) if it has a 1.X and not a 2.x rom (if the comm manager screen has 4 icons not 6...), because once this is done it is permanent, and once you upgrade it is MUCH harder to do.. if you need specific directions let me know.
I would then upgrade to the T-Mo 2.26 rom as suggested above, I am using it now and I really like it.
I personally use Registry Wizard to tweak the wizard, at least for the basics... Some good tweaks to start with are disabeling the go online and unsigned program warnings, enable 802.11g, Enable Indicator (lets you know when CAPS and symbol are on), Different GPRS/EDGE icon, and personally I always enable the IE 4-way nav, engineering mode (type string *#*#364#*#* into phone and hit send to show cool technical info...) I also set GPRS always on... (probably not a good idea unless you have unlimited data, like I do... (if not you also may elect not to disable the go-online warning, so you know when its doing stuff...))
Agile messenger is a good program, total commander is more or less essential, and I have recently been using a program called Hubdog ( I think it can do more than I do with it, but I just use it as an rss reader...) All are free. Novii remote also works well (however with limeted 2-3 meter range) but is not free...
If you want any more info on programs I use, where to get them, ect..., or any other tweaks please just let me know.
i appreciate the help!
ill definitely be coming to you for questions
when you first got your phone, did you charge it for the whole 12 hours before using it?

I upgraded to a custom 2.24 ROm without SIM unlocking. If I want to SIM unlock now should I downgrade to 1.8, SIM unlock, then upgrade to whatever ROM I want (probably xelecin's custom 2.26 when it's out). I don't really care about the SIM lock since I'm in a contract with Tmo, I'm not changing any time soon. I just don't want to have problems if I upgrade the ROM later on.
Sorry not trying to hijack...I swear

no problem
so, did everyone here charge their phone for the full 12 hours before using their phones?
also, another question, on the sidekick there was an app called "money clip" where it allowed me to keep track of different accounts such as my checking, savings, and credit cards... are there any apps like that available for the MDA?
i tired to use exel right now to see if i can just do it the ghetto way, but its not really letting me.. ;x
hey good job man (i donno about money clip) about returning the sidekick 3 for the MDA. i did that too. and i upgraded from a sidekick 2 too.
i can tell you the MDA is at least 9 times better (random number?)... but the only thing i haven't gotten to work is setting up outlook email... hopefully you have better luck. (but it is because the free yahoo doesn't support it).
hmmm, i charged phone for maybe two hours out of the box, did the cid unlock and sim unlock, and have been flashing the rom ever since (remember to thank all the folks here who cook up all these lovely roms)

haha.. cool, so i dont need to do a full charge on the it?
where can i find the instructions on how to flash the ROM? and also, which ROM is recommeneded?
I'm a newb waiting for my MDA too. I dont see why one should SIM unlock if he/she already has the MDA (US). Can't I just upgrade to the 2.26? Or are there some feautures that I would be noticably be missing?

What version of lokiwiz would you recommend using? I noticed there are two different threads, one for 0.2 and one for 0.3. Do they do the same thing? The steps for 0.3 seem to require a second SIM, is that true? Thanks.
Ok, first, the reason to SIM unlock is because then you can swap to a different providers SIM later on, for instance if you dump T-mo or you travel to Europe or something. For me, it simply seems like a good idea to do it now, because then I know I have it if I need it.
CID unlock is for using other providers ROMS. You can just upgrade to the 2.26, but then what happens when you decide you want to upgrade to the cingular 3.xx b/c of some amazing feature... Once you are in a 2.x rom it becomes much harder to do this. It is sooooo simple, why not just do it now? again, your phone, yor decision, and I think flashing an unofficial rom will void the warranty if they can prove it (personally I don't care, some do)
As far as Lokiwiz, I used Lokiwiz 02b, downloaded from this forum. The newer version, .03, is only needed if you have already upgraded to a 2.x ROM.
As far as SIM unlocking after upgrading, I do not know if it is possible to downgrade from a 2.x to a 1.x, especially if you haven't CID unlocked already... I think you may be stuck using the .03 2 sim card method (this is required as the phone dosen't know it needs to prompt for unlock code untill you enter a 'banned (ie from another provider)' sim... get a cheep prepay (NOT T-mo prepay if you have T-mo) from the local drug store/Walmart... This may be easier than downgrading and then upgrading anyway, and since ( I am assuming) you have already CID unlocked, I do not think you will have any problems...
.02 does not need the second sim as it changes the setting directly by accessing some part of the memory on the device, which cannot, apparently be done in the new roms...
O. Brown... SIM, as I mentioned above, is different from CID. You are thinking of CID. I would do it simply b/c you cannot do it later, yet once done it is permanent...
Bittermormon, same idea...
As far as chargeing, I am notorios for taking it out of the box and hitttng the power. If it turns on, well then why should I charge it...? Plus, you can turn it on plugged in, so if you are worried, plug it into the wall and then start playing... but I don't want to promise this won't have some negative effect, do what you feel safe with, all I am saying is what worked for me...
As far as financial software goes, I checked out the PocketPcMag Nominations for best software 2006, in the financial category... Cash Organizer '05 Premium, Pocket Quicken, PocketMoney, Spb Finance, Stock Manager... I have not used any of theese. I do not know if they are what you want... I do not know how much they cost, but it is a place to start at least.
As far as pocket outlook, no problems here, except with gmail pop access, which always seemed kinda... messed up... to me... So, I did something even better... I setup a free exchange account with mail2web.com (I think they call it mail2web live or something...) and my gmail forwards a copy of all incoming mail to the exchange mail address... THis allows me to use PUSH email for my gmail acct (which is my main acct.) If you have a corporate exchange, you can use that instead. The only "Problem" with this is that deleting messages on the phone does not delete them in gmail... I personally like this as I cna then use gmail on my pc to its fullest to label, archive, ect... On the ppc I delete all of the newsletters ect... and only really read personal mail or important stuff. This lets me keep my phone inbok clear, and I can still read all of the other stuff later on the desktop... Or you can always just switch to using the exchange email address as your main...
And as far as the best ROM, well, that is as much opinion as anything else... I am running the T-mo 2.26 with the extended rom installed... I have noit seen any cooked versions of this yet, although I believe someone on the HOFO is working on one... I gotta say, I like this rom. I have a few small glitches, but I think that it is installed software, not the ROM...
A few other tips... I recently discovered microsoft voice command, and I am enjoying it very much... First of all, no setting voice tags, and secondly, for me, I could never remember exactly what the voice tag was for someone, especially when I had one for the house and cell... Now I can just say ther full name ie, Call John Doe on Mobile, and the phone does it... as with any other software, your mileage may vary... PM me if you want me to email the cab...
Also, buying a large miniSD is a great idea, I have a Sandisk 1gb and I love it. Watch out for 2gb cards, a small minority may be valid, most are fakes, and all are probably lower quality...
Any other questions, feel free to ask, or even PM me (especially if I do not seem to be responding fast enough....)
And Uh, SORRY about the length... just trying to answer everythng...

just ordered my 02 exec, just a couple of questions

hello, like the title says, iv just ordered my xda exec and i should have it in a couple of days, i was wondering can i use my exec to make and recieve skype calls? can i send and recieve faxes thru it on the o2 netweork and also if i flash jwrights rom to it, will it remove all of the crappy o2 software??
thankyou for your help
1. Yes, you can make/receive skype calls(provided you have fast internet connection)
2. Regarding fax, I m not on O2 network and I dont use mine for faxes(let somebody else answer your query)
3. O2 'crappy' software wont be installed if you do a soft-reset before the '3 sec customisation' screen appears.
note: you can do away with the 'crappy' customisation for ever by flashing some other ms.nbf file. Also, you have the option to unlock the extended rom and change the files over there(you can also 'cook' your own extended rom)
once iv downloaded the skype software, is it exxpensive to use? on my o2 contract i have a data bolt-on which gives me 5mb per month, will using skype use up my data pretty quick?
iv been reading about hacks and tweaks? should i experiment with these? or just install a new rom? i have very limited knowledge on this sort of stuff, i did upgrade the rom on my xda11i to pugs rom, but didnt really understand what it did! just wanted to try it out! what have most of you guys done with your universals?
if anyone on here is on the O2 network id love to know what you've done to your exec's and also if they can send/recieve faxes
thankyou
Hi again!
For skype, you need fast internet connection. I m, unfortunately, unaware of the fact whether 3G,UMTS is avaliable in UK. You can use wifi too for skype(this is what I do)
AFA new ROMs are concerned, most of them come pre-tweaked with all enhancements(and some useful utilities too).
As you must be knowing, the 'pug's ROM which you had installed for HTC alpine(O2 IIi), it is basically the O2 ROM without O2 'crappy' apps. So, as I had said before, everything depends on what you have in extended ROM. If you flash with some other extended ROM file(these files are known as "ms.nbf" files) or you unlock+unhide it with extended rom unlocker tool, your device wont be customised after each hard reset
would anyone be able to give me a little breakdown on what unlocking the extended rom does? i have read a bit about it, but im not quite sure what this achieves!?
and yes we do have 3g over here, so in theory ill be able to make skype calls, how much data does it use if i use it over 3g??

02 XDA Trion Upgrade to WM6

O2 have a free upgrade from WM5 to WM6 on there website for the XDA Trion.
http://www.my-xda.com/trion_software.html
I have just upgraded my phone and it didn't brick it - Which is always nice (I have had 3 phones off my insurance that I have "lost" due to bricking... they make nice paper weights
The install is simple it also customises your phone with O2 branding stuff.
Enjoy.
Well my serial number is apparently not a Trion.
{Edit} Seems something broke. The URL it should load is
http://member.htc.com/ruudownload/O2UKRuuDownload.aspx?sn={YourSerialHere}&refer=http://member.htc.com/index.html
but put your serial where the {} are. Looks like there might be a convoluted system to make sure you can't bypass the damn serial checking system....
{/edit}
Weird mine worked this afternoon.
Quick question -
Did this just upgrade your device or actually flash it? ie am I going to have to re-install everything afterwards or will it mostly keep the stuff on the phone?
They don't seem to mention taking backups, but I take them regularly (obviously) and am wondering if I ought to wait until I have the installers with me.
What if I use a mac?
Hey how can I install the upgrade if I only use a mac??? I use missinc sync to sync my data etc but how about installing apps?
Dont tell me I cant do it?

HTC Touch 3G "Orange Unique"

Hi , I recently got a HTC Touch 3G from Orange as i had the HTC TyII and love that phone with the wifi and now i have this new phone that seems quite good however has been changed with the Orange Unique that allows you to connect to wifi but not use it , why would they do this? (money making). The Unique technology don't do any thing that it clams to do i don't seem to get better coverage or any thing, just high data costs and a low batter.
I want to use the wifi on my phone for the internet and google maps etc, is the only way around this to flash my phone to a ROM on this site ? If so i understand that is voids my warranty , but want to know if any one has done this successfully (Hope Orange hasn't put a block on Flashing etc)so that i can do the same because i do miss my wifi and may just go back to my HTC TyII .
Thanks
hi mate i got mine about 2 weeks ago.. n hacked the ass out of it... it too was Orange UK
i was disgusted when i got it to fined it would not use the wifi as a net connection! but it sure does now and i love it!
i will get you some links in a bit

Wifi doesn't work at all
Hello there,
I am completely new to HTC world. Recently I bought Touch 3g locked to Orange and am currently using it with O2 after unlocking. Could never use its wifi until now with the Unique even on Orange.
I had only seen some web pages when connected through the Orange 3G.
Could you please let me know how can I remove the Unique and use it as non-Orange HTC?
Many thanks.
Touch 3g Orange
Guys, I have a touch 3g branded from Orange. Used Hard SPL - ensure you have the correct version, and that it installs correctly - reaad the hard SPL posts on how to do this - carefully - and read them again toensure you have the correct version and it loads correctly, then flash whatever rom you require - I went with the standard one and it worked first time, perfectly.
Wifi is rock solid, and it has lost all the rubbish suppressions that Orange introduced in their rom.
Good luck - reading around these forum will solve your issues no problem
Thank you neilcbennett!
I will try to work out hard spl. Wish me gud luck i'm doing this for first time!

I did all of this but used the updated official ROM from HTC. I could not get the file from the HTC website because it says my S/N is not compatible, I can only assume that this is because HTC have agreed to not release the software to Orange units forcing us poor customers to pay to use 3G internet rather than free WI-FI. A bit of searching led me to an English version hoseted on another website:

Wifi & Orange on Touch 3G
Hi Guys,
I specifically asked in the shop that it run WiFi and was ,mis-informed by the sales guy. Not his fault he was brain washed.
Anyway, came here did Hardspl & Tommy34's rom. Its great solved a battery drain (auto off wans't working) & I'm now able to easily turn off 3g until I really need it or get an o2 eqivalant tariff. WiFi works perfectly.

After updating the ROM, can you guys still use Orange 3G or do you have to use an alternative provider for internet access?
Those of you that still have the original orange UMA software, I think I have a fix for you that allows UMA to still work but uses your own wifi. Perhaps someone could roll it in to a cab or executable for me if it works.
Make sure you have disconnected any gprs connection that you may already have, change the registry key below and you can test whether it has worked or not by going to http://orangeworld.co.uk/ in a browser. If it is using your wifi you should get "The page you are trying to access is only available via your Orange phone, when connected via the Orange GPRS network. If you are a BlackBerry user trying to access via the BlackBerry Internet Service Browser please change your default Browser to OrangeWorld through which this portal is available."
there is a slight speed lag when resolving dns names I think, but maybe someone can refine the fix that I have come up with.
It has to be run each time the phone is booted:-
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{f792e23c-dc19-4668-9be4-f8688b4c18d6}\DSFLTR_UKSC_TNETW12511]
"DestId"="{436EF144-B4FB-4863-A041-8F905A62C572}"
------------
to restore the original value change DestID back to {4BECC613-31B8-4A62-80DC-893041D24D92}
Let me know how you get on.
I used sever155's link to the HK_WWE 2.33.721.1 Rom... and I too am very pleased with the transformation of my phone . thanks for sharing.

Like others - I've flashed a new ROM to replace the Orange one. It works great - but I need to return the phone to Orange for a replacement for another reason (found a defect in the case).
I dumped the original Orange ROM - and am all set to flash the device back to its original state.
But I forgot to make a note of the original ROM version number before dumping!
HTC Rom Tool allows me to enter anything but I assume when they get the phone back Orange will want to see an appropriate version number.
Anyone know what it should be for a new Orange branded HTC Touch 3G?
And the country ID for UK? And the model ID? Should it be Jade110 rather than Jade100?

Hey - a real big thanks to DJHICKS and all the others who his post on flashing a decent ROM on the HTC Touch 3G links to - I was going to ditch my new one from orange 'cus unique manager was so cr** - but he saved the day and taught me a whole lot of new stuff about PDAs!! Can't believe I'm now talking about flashing ROMs! THANKS
Unique service access to the internet
Hi All,
I have the orange touch 3g too and have been able to get on the net using the default rom without patches by using 2 steps.
First as the other post suggested stop the gprs (generic term for data access 3g or otherwise). I did this by changing the server name from "orangeinternet" to orangeinternet." this is done by manage connection from the connections tab on setting screen form the start menu. This stops any data connections.
Then once connected to your wifi at home got the unique manager and advanced setting, network adapter, there is a drop down list with work and internet on it. change it to work and then back to internet and ok it. Then you can get on the internet
The last step you have to repeat every time to you connect to the wifi as it forgets, I think the saved networks don't remember this, but if you don't used the saved networks and have the notification turned on it asks you if the network is internet or not which 'could' solve this problem, either way the steps above work reliably for me. I guess I should mention I have orange broadband too, so I get a unique connection too (the green house), this is the bit I hate the tariff is for orange to orange calls no other network, so I have to keep unique off unless I'm doing something on the internet as any call outside orange would be build as far as I can tell, I've not tried as I don't want the bill for it any info on this would be great.
Cheers
I have a solution
I put in on youtube go have a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1RTX3F1bPk thanks BrooksE
I have been unable to download this file - I wonder if it has been removed from mediafire. Have tried several times from different PCs.
Does anyone know where else I can download it from?
I am trying to free myself from Unique but so far have not succeeded depsite trying to follow the instructions in this thread!

Works a treat and i love it!
Cheers guys

BBConnect hiding phone model

Hi, using Rhodium with SetModelID running on it and "making" my phone model Raphael. I then use BBConnect to get work emails, since the company uses BES. Works well so far. However IT department contacted me "worried" that I use unauthorised device. They see that I use HTC device and BBConnect application instead or real BB device. This does not bother me, but knowing IT department fear to whatever they do not understand or can not completely control, I have few questions:
1. Is there any way I can hide my model, and software I use? So that on Server they would see their joy and pride BB device?
2. Should that be not possible and in case they would dare to cut me off the email access due to "unauthorised device use", I would like to argue the case Do you know if risk, workload or anything else to the server increases once HTC+BBConnect is used instead of BB device? This would help me to understand if they have a logical concern about HTC on BES or if it is only their usual fear of unknown...
Does that mean there is no way to hide model, so that on server side it would be seen as BB phone?
