is there a way to change the sig. that the mda sends to server so that it will not recognize it as a ppc browser, and will seem to the server as a desktop browser?

If you're comfortable editing the registry then you'll find the answer here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=WM5_Tweaks_Other, just read towards the bottom.
If you aren't comfortable editing the registry, then try this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725

If I put in an URL which ends .jpg rather than gives a webpage address, PIE asks me if I want to download the image and open it after downloading.
What I actually want to do is VIEW the image, without having to click "Yes" and then having to wait while it fires up the Picture Viewer.
Can I change this behaviour?
Can nobody help?
I tried exactly the same thing on an Orange E200 (very old Smartphone!) and it works perfectly - image displays straight away in the browser, no prompt for "download and open file".
I just want to be able to see the jpg directly in PIE, and refresh if I want. Easiest way of viewing my webcam!
timetex - don't know about the specific question, but why not just knock up a tiny bit of html just holding the jpg <img> and address. That way, you refresh the html page, not the jpg? This will also allow you to resize it to fit your screen etc as well.

Good suggestion, vijay, and if it was a computer generating the jpg, or I had control over it, that would be the first thing I'd look at.
However, its a camera. To be specific, an IP Network Camera I've got setup on my home network. It has its own built in webserver and makes use of an ActiveX plugin to "stream" video over http:// connection - so using my desktop PC, I just put the IP address of my router (or my domain name) into the browser, and the ActiveX / WebCam does the rest.
However, PIE will not accept the stream.
I've found a website detailing how to access specific data from the camera using either cgi commands or this function I'm using - the ability to view a single jpg image using a http://xxx.yyy.zzz/CamImg.jpg address.
As I said, this works fine on my Orange E200, but not in PIE on the MDA Pro. Annoying.
I guess I could get the camera to FTP the image to my hosted webspace and generate some HTML to view it there, but this just seems a silly way to do it, and rather wasteful of my bandwidth, as it would have to keep sending regular FTP just in case I wanted to view it (permanently overwriting the same filename every second or so) whereas if I connect directly to the camera, I automatically get the current image.
I could always stick a html file on my webspace and have THAT load the image.... hmm, I guess that could work?

This is something I really need !
Does anyone know if there are any chance to
display active X content ??
I'm not sure I understand
Surely the jpg must have an address that you're typing into PIE. In notepad on your PC (or pocket word etc if you're feeling adverturous) just knock together some html to display the image.
The html page will exist on your PDA, eg \storage\VJTestPage.html, and you just load that every time you want to see the updated jpg from your camera:
Paste this into notepad and change the urls for your jpg
Code:
<html><head>
[url="http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2005/20051012l.jpg"][img]http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2005/20051012l.jpg[/img][/url]
</head></html>
This assumes of course that the jpg's url is static, ie doesn't change.

Like an absolute charm...
Thats a nice workaround Vijay, to be sure.
But it fails to address the fundamental problem that is PIE's failure to view image files rather than download them.
Is there no way to alter a setting in PIE to VIEW jpgs rather than download them? The reason it's sooo irritating is that we don't want to keep all the images we want to view, eg browsing a forum thread with a frinds holiday photos in, you don't want to keep the photos, just see them!
Why can't it do this?
Do all the other pocket browers do this? I haven't tried Opera, and minimo is less use than a truckload of dead rats in a tampon factory!
Has anyone found a way round this?
you might try using the search button of the forum. It might help.

How do you think I found this thread??
Do you mean there actually IS a way to get PIE to do this? (and if so - why does searching for "Images AND pie" not get to it?)
If you're going to take the effort to post an answer then it may as well be a useful one.
what about "jpg and pie"

Thank You hugo.
hey folks,
i've come accross a pretty annoying bug i think. when i open a wap webpage with pocket ie i cant jump from link to link with the dpad or the scroll wheel. it just scrolls down the webpage. this means i always have to pull out the pen when i surf on wap pages which is kind of annoying. on regular html pages i dont have any problems selecting links via the dpad or the scroll wheel.
oh, and before the hermes i had an mda2 running wm05 and it also worked perfect there.
am i the only one with this problem? are there any sollutions?
i tried searching the forum but couldnt find anything.
greets
4saken
am I really the only one with this problem? or is everyone having this problem and there ist just no solution?
Yeah, it's something I've noticed too. Really odd. Opera Mobile handles links in WAP pages fine though, you can scroll through links with the scroll wheel and d-pad just like web pages with it.

I just tried mine. Cant remember last time I was at a Wap site.
Anyway I had no problems both Scroll and DPad scrolled down each and every link.
I don't suppose you have changed any settings in the likes of Tweaks2k2 to do with smooth scrolling. (Although even if you had I would have thought it would change regular sites also)

The BBC Mobile (PDA) page has some links to WAP pages (the Video Headlines is currently only available inside the UK, but it's nothing you can't already watch online via Ben Metcalfe's BBC News AV Flattener site (a VERY cool work in progress). However, you can load some of the other WAP links, I use it to test connectivity if I'm in a situation where I need to... URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/pda/
Ben Metcalfe's site: http://bbcnews.benmetcalfe.com/ (there's no pretty interface yet, you just load the html files up inside the directory listing, they're regenerated every so often automatically by PHP script and cronjob).

Yeah, I'll have a look at these - not bothered about pretty interface particularly as I often use GPRS with no special tariff (reeeeely expensive) but I don't seem to have the problem of not being able to scroll to the links so it appears either I or you and 4saken have changed.
I didnt change anything in the registry. I had this problem both with the original german rom from o2 and now with the newest english htc rom.
The ability to scroll through links on a page is limited to web pages only, Pocket IE's ability to scroll WSP:// protocol pages is, by default, restricted to only scrolling up and down the page.
To be honest, I'll just bop a link with my finger if I want to load it, it's not that hard and I prefer smooth scrolling up and down a page anyway (I read a lot of long articles on sites such as The Register and the browser screen constantly diving from left to right, jumping down huge amounts to the next link really bugs me). You must have some kind of addon or third-party application which reintroduces the ability to scroll through links in wap pages, because by default that's not possible.
I'm trying to figure out a way to block ads in Opera mobile. I've read on the internet that you can use a file called urlfilter.ini in the desktop version of Opera.
Does anyone know if there is a similar functionality in the mobile version?
Yes, there is. I've also found a site that offers a pre-made ad-blocking list for this very purpose.
A mortscript can be used to update your adblocking every so often:
Code:
Download("http://fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/urlfilter.ini", "\Application Data\Opera 9.5\urlfilter.ini")
Download("http://fanboy.co.nz/adblock/opera/fanboy-adblocklist-elements.css", "\Application Data\Opera 9.5\styles\user.css")
(Note, haven't tried this with the very latest Opera build - the paths might need tweaking)
It would be great if someone can post the latest and updated urlfilter.ini file. As I understand, all the urls listed there would be automatically blocked, one the file has been copied to \Your_Path_to\Opera 9.5\ .... Yes?
Great stuff, can someone explain how to use this in opera. Where do I put the file, etc???
You can put it where you want! Just go to opera:config and search for "filter".
I have read on one of those sites that having a big urlfilter.ini would slow down Opera boot time and loading of sites. I haven't tested this myself but it might be good to know.
a better urlfilter.ini (just like adblock plus in firefox):

this was the first thought that came to my mind, and it seems logical too because opera would have to parse through all the urls in the list everytime you press on a link. think how horribly long that could become.
if i remember correctly in opera:config there should be an option there to block unrequested popups.
Here's a request I've just made to developers, please take a look:

since purchasing my hd I have had the beauty constantly on the internet. I use it pretty much all the time. I do however have one problem, i an not sure hd it is something I have done but when I open an rss feed's link in the rss hubb I can never get the links to open in opera. instead I hatedtm copy and paste. I an sure there's a registry hack for this so could anyone help?
I'm also trying to do the same...
please help
at least let us know if it's possible!!
Open up your favourite registry editor (I use CeRegistryEditor), and check:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\EFBROWSER
It should be set to "\Windows\OperaL.exe". If this doesn't work, try searching for iexplore.exe.
ok i found it you have to change the key
hklr\http\shell\open
change to opera and reboot!
thanks dave
I tried this but still couldn't get it to work.
Has anyone any ideas please?
1) Open Opera Mobile
2) Type opera:config into the address, this gives you access to tons of preferences
3) Expand the install bullet
4) Check Browser First Time Launch and press Save
5) Exit Opera
6) Restart Opera
The first time you restart it will take a while, and may even close without showing you the browser, but now open a link from e-mail or other source and it should use Opera to open.
THX @ elgar
works perfect for me (MIRI V12.0)

Awesome, thanks fella. IE opening all the time was annoying the hell out of me. Apart from flash support, Opera is a significantly superior browser.

Is this really the full path guys? Ican't even seem to see a " hklr" to start with ... what am I missing here?... could you please help and confirm?
Ok I found it now... in "hkcr" of course... well done for your tip then ....thanks!
lost opera as default...again!
Opera 9.7b browser messed up my config...
Right... I really hope that someone can help me out here.
This is an old boring problem I once had with Opera, but I had then found my answer. Only this time the remedy won't work: Basically, after trying out Opera 9.7b and then uninstalling it, the cooked Opera browser in Dutty's 3.6 won't function as my default browser anymore (when I click on links from Google Maps for example)...
So I used the usual solution:
1) Open Opera Mobile
2) Type opera:config into the address, this gives you access to tons of preferences
3) Expand the install bullet
4) Check Browser First Time Launch and press Save
5) Exit Opera
6) Restart Opera
But the config above doesn't seem to stay in the system, once Soft reset, I can see that it is unchecked again... Could somebody shine a light on my moment of darkness please?
Edit: all sorted thanks to registry edit above...

Dunno if it is the right place to post it...anyhow I would let you to know this fabulous (maybe just my personal opinion) that allow you to enable on your today screen a complete search engine frontend:
http://www.gx-5.com/products/ultimatesearch/
It is called "Ultimate Search" and it's pretty cheap. I really love it because you can make a search on Google/yahouu/youtube/ecc...just by tapping one button on your today.
I've just one problem: it works only with IE, not with Opera.
I tried to open the .dll attached here with an hex editor to enable it to launch Opera instead of IE but unfortunally I'm not so able in theese things and so I failed.
Is there something who can help me?
Thanks a lot in advance.
PS: (to the mods) I posted here just the dll used by the program. No copyrights violated, no warez.
Come on guys...
there's really noone who could help me?
I'm sorry...never liked the "bump action" but I really need thi help...
So: ...BUMP...
use vjbrisk to map the iexplorer exe to the opera exe
Or maybe you can set Opera like default browser?
it wont open with any other Browser other than IE because its using the HTTPRequest and other commands provided by M$ in there SDK
