cant select links in wap - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

hey folks,
i've come accross a pretty annoying bug i think. when i open a wap webpage with pocket ie i cant jump from link to link with the dpad or the scroll wheel. it just scrolls down the webpage. this means i always have to pull out the pen when i surf on wap pages which is kind of annoying. on regular html pages i dont have any problems selecting links via the dpad or the scroll wheel.
oh, and before the hermes i had an mda2 running wm05 and it also worked perfect there.
am i the only one with this problem? are there any sollutions?
i tried searching the forum but couldnt find anything.
greets
4saken

am I really the only one with this problem? or is everyone having this problem and there ist just no solution?

Yeah, it's something I've noticed too. Really odd. Opera Mobile handles links in WAP pages fine though, you can scroll through links with the scroll wheel and d-pad just like web pages with it.

I just tried mine. Cant remember last time I was at a Wap site.
Anyway I had no problems both Scroll and DPad scrolled down each and every link.
I don't suppose you have changed any settings in the likes of Tweaks2k2 to do with smooth scrolling. (Although even if you had I would have thought it would change regular sites also)

The BBC Mobile (PDA) page has some links to WAP pages (the Video Headlines is currently only available inside the UK, but it's nothing you can't already watch online via Ben Metcalfe's BBC News AV Flattener site (a VERY cool work in progress). However, you can load some of the other WAP links, I use it to test connectivity if I'm in a situation where I need to... URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/pda/
Ben Metcalfe's site: http://bbcnews.benmetcalfe.com/ (there's no pretty interface yet, you just load the html files up inside the directory listing, they're regenerated every so often automatically by PHP script and cronjob).

Yeah, I'll have a look at these - not bothered about pretty interface particularly as I often use GPRS with no special tariff (reeeeely expensive) but I don't seem to have the problem of not being able to scroll to the links so it appears either I or you and 4saken have changed.

I didnt change anything in the registry. I had this problem both with the original german rom from o2 and now with the newest english htc rom.

The ability to scroll through links on a page is limited to web pages only, Pocket IE's ability to scroll WSP:// protocol pages is, by default, restricted to only scrolling up and down the page.
To be honest, I'll just bop a link with my finger if I want to load it, it's not that hard and I prefer smooth scrolling up and down a page anyway (I read a lot of long articles on sites such as The Register and the browser screen constantly diving from left to right, jumping down huge amounts to the next link really bugs me). You must have some kind of addon or third-party application which reintroduces the ability to scroll through links in wap pages, because by default that's not possible.

AJAX'd mobile IE homepage

With all the talk of AJAX at the moment, I've had a play with it in mobile IE. I wanted a local homepage that could load when I start IE and give me access to most of the services I use.
So from that homepage, I can get to:
Searching multiple search engines (Google, Wapedia, dictionary.com, etc)
My del.icio.us tags
My del.icio.us bookmarks tagged as 'mobilefavorites'
My favorite RSS feeds
And some standard "bookmarks"
I've also set it up so I can go to the full webpages or view them via Google's gwt.
I've attached a copy if anyone is interested (either to use it or just to see how it works).
To customise for your own RSS feeds, favorites and searches just edit "config.xml" - When you edit this, make sure it is valid XML (try loading it into IE to see if it displays OK - I usually forget to replace '&' with '&')

I'm working on a website that is very similar. It's not ajax yet, because i'm focusing on the lowest common denominator such as mobile phones running browsers like netfront or ones that are to slow to really run javascript code at a reasonable rate.
the site is at http://wampad.com. I'm also working on a uk centric version but i haven't released that yet.
The only thing it haven't added yet is rss feeds, but i'm working on it. The tag I use for del.icio.us bookmarks is mtag.
I'd really like to here what you think.
There's a nice right up at, http://wapreview.com/blog/?p=100
I am pretty sure that PIE doesnt support the xmlhttp control.... This could be why you have commented out methods like getXML and added comments like "This doesnt work in PIE"
Thanks gurok, I'd forgotten I'd left those comments it.
PIE doe support the xmlhttp control (It is actually used in the code to retrieve the RSS feeds) - what it doesn't seem to support is basic authentication with the xmlhttp control.
Thanks
Martin

Improved Opera 8.xx homepage: Add yours here

EDIT: UPDATE IN LATER POST BELOW
Here's a modified homepage I did for Opera. Looks best at 75% zoom
Supports many* search engines with one elegant dropdown (ie javascript page) - enter keywords and select engine (else press enter for Google as default). Makes Opera a far more useful tool. See list below.
Bookmark areas divided (you can change headings)
Area for built-in opera functions (eg opera:cache) for which I'd love some additions
If anyone out there is good at javascript, else has a history of collecting Opera widgets/bookmarklets that work under JS, it'd be great to start collating bigger n better homepages in this thread.
To install
Backup original home.html if u r worried this will not be nice, else just extract the home.html as another name and change Opera's homepage
Simply extract the files to \Application Data\Opera\startpage
Edit the home.html to insert your own bookmarks (either as text file else in html editor - it's easy)
*Search engines covered: Google, googleZA, google Images, Dictionary, Thesaurus, Quotations, Law dict, Medical dict, Encarta, How Stuff Works, WorldAltas, NationMaster, FactMonster, Wikipedia, Mythica, Britanicca (crap), Amazon, Song Lyrics/artist/titles, IMDb, Jokes (down so not tested). Can add anything else to this script without screen clutter - but that's all the truly useful stuff I could think of. If u want more, post the search string for me (ie the URL)
Forgot to attach zip - sorry. Improved search engines whilst I was at it tho.
This is amazing! Thank you for taking the time to do this. I was even able to cut and create it into a page suitable for my PIE homepage!
wow! didn't think PIE would support such javascript - thought that was one of the things that made Opera so cool. Good news tho - perhaps ppl have other PIE homepages they can post here for us to benefit from.
THX
Just SuperDuper !
Many Thanks for this
Great.

Cool - glad it's appreciated.
Actually the only clever part is the search engine, rest is a simple table with dividers for whatever headings you want (ie copy the divider as many times as you like). In my case I keep all my https bookmarks separate (webmail, 3 banks, server admin, etc etc). You may prefer "News", "PPC", "Personal" or some other structure.
another search engine
First of all, many thanks for this homepage, it's what I've been dreaming all along... almost
Now, to make it perfect, I would need to change/add some other search engines, such as the portuguese "yellow pages", wich url is www.pai.pt.
Also, I would like to know how to set the bookmarks in the homepage.
Can you explain how can I do that? I have no experience in programming, but I believe these tasks are simple enough, if someone can explain them step by step.
Thanks again
vmiguel
EDITED: Ok, I've managed to understand the bookmarks. Now I only need some assistance in geting the correct url to query a search engine, like the one I've mentioned above. Naturaly, the simple page url is not enough, but I can not find what's missing. Can someone help? TIA
Attached is an update with more search engines and links.
The update has a whole load of new ideas - largely set up for for SA but there's a guide below on modifying to your country. Let's add to this list please, and PLEASE post your country-specific pages in this thread:
Normal searches (google, google images, google maps)
SA searches (google ZA, DSTV guide, resturants/nightspots, Braby's maps (serious Java works in Opera 8.60! AWESOME!!!), postal codes, Braby's business lookup, Ananzi shopping
Reference searches (dictionary, thesaurus, quotations, law dict, medical dict)
Encyclopedia searches (several)
Entertainment searches (Amazon, Songs by lyric/artist/title, IMDb, Jokes 1/2 both work well)
Bookmarks PDA
Bookmarks South African (exchange rates table, MyBroadband, ACSA flight schedules and late arrivals (useful!), venue search, current local movie reviews, netflorist, Yellow and WHITE pages!, CIPRO company search, SARS VAT number search) Could not turn last few into search items for drop box I'm afraid
Place for personal bookmarks (banking, share trading, webmail, etc)
Opera internals (History, cache, about, Bookmarks as text file, PPC browsing) If anyone knows the javascript for opening a bookmarks page that would be great cos text page is crap - I only did it cos cut-n-paste may be useful!
Future bookmark ideas (largely ZA):
Taxi booking
Local car rental firms
Local airline schedules
Booking for local hotel groups
Local auction sites
Locla Lottery numbers search
Property search
School friends search
vmiguel: editing is easy as you are finding - open in an html editor or just a text editor. Text may actually be easier cos the html editor will probably not render the CSS correctly.
To add search engines, surf them in your PC and note the URL when you search for a word like 'MYSEARCH'. Somewhere in the URL you will see a bit that says &xxx=MYSEARCH where xxx is usually q or query or keyword or something similar. You'll get the plot. Make sure this bit is put at the end of the URL, and remove the MYSEARCH bit. So, the URL will be:
htttp://www.searchengine.com/search.html?a=1&b=2&query=
The script will ad the entered words at the end.
Some tips:
Ignore other &... items
Remove any keys or session ID's that have complex strings
Don't miss the & before query unless...
..after the page URL should be a ? - all parameters follow this. So if query is the only parameter, it will look like htttp://www.searchengine.com/search.html?query=
Thanks a lot, I'll try it, and get back with a portuguese homepage!
EDITED: sorry, no & or = symbols, the resulting url, after performing a search is http://www.pai.pt/search/mysearch.html
"Mysearch" is a false query, because there is no portuguese company with that name, but if I perform a search for a existing company, as "Norma Básica", the result is similar: http://www.pai.pt/search/norma_básica.html
Any ideas?

Yep, it's a *****! Actually, it's a rather clever search page that remembers your recent inputs and allows you to select them from the drop box and a mouseover popup. Impressive. It works if you append .html to the string generated by the script, but I can't think of an elegant way to make the script do that for some sites and not for others. Think you'll have to do the same as I did for our SA yellow and white pages; just do a bookmark to that site rather than use the drop box. Sorry.

Once I had my links all set up for Opera, I cut and pasted the links only and then used the instructions here: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/03/03/83349.aspx The javascript wont work, but at least you will end up with the same links in PIE and Opera, and you wont have to re-type!
Good enough for me. Thanks again, for such a great idea!
you are great !!! it makes opera much more useful now~~thanks a lot

Opera slower then the PIE?

Hey @ all,
i just tested a little around with my Advantage and 3.5G and found out that my Opera is never faster then 120Kbyte/Second... then i was wondering if this is the same on my WLAN. I ve got a 3.5 MBit DSL and tried first with Opera again 100-120 Kbyte/Second. After i tested with PIE. 450-540 Kbyte/Second...
Do i have to change some settings?
Thanks for your help
Kind Regards,
CoDeX2k
I've had a similar experience, and now use PIE over Operah. No idea why its like this!!

I did not do any benchmarks but I did find PIE faster. I have been using it over Opera and even Vueflo is set for PIE.
Maybe we need to tweak some settings in Opera as I do find the multiple tabs very useful.
Is there such a thing as tweaking the MTU or otherwise for individual applications on the Athena? Maybe Opera is slower because it processes the HTML differently and tries to adjust it for the screen while IE doesn't do as well of a job. Let me know if I'm wrong here.
Edit: I'm going to read through these to find out if there is anything that can be done. But I can't yet until later tonight or maybe this weekend. If you guys give it a go, let us know what you find if anything.
http://www.opera.com/support/service/customization/
its, I think Opera is definitely MUCH MUCH slower than IE. This is not just in loading itself , in fetching data, in displays, but also in accepting input from the keyboard. Opera is unable to cope with the high speed typing using TenGo software keyboard, whereas IE has no problem coping.
I'm sticking with IE from now until this problem is addressed in future version.
As per suggestions in this thread I tested PIE.
Oh my god (OMG for all you netizens) it is h o r r i b l e. It doesn't render anything correctly.
And I do not find that Opera is slower, but that could be due to the service providers crappy Edge (only ~160 kbps).
Opera renders pages quite nicely although sometimes it misses things, but overall it it is much more pleasurable to surf using Opera.
Strange, i also found Opera better, and the speed is not slower than IE as well.

Not much but here they are:
- Menu/Windows/....defaults.
- Menu/Display/, select Load images, Fit to screen, Landscape. Go to Zoom and selectd 90%. Found that putting it on 90% pages load better and faster on my end.
- Menu/Tools/, General tab: uncheck Jump to page content, check Block pop-ups, Minimum font size 10. History tab: 2000KB, Network tab: All SSL and TLS checked, all Proxy left blank, Misc tab: All checked but Use grab and scroll. I found that checking grab and scroll slowed down the browser.
I'm planning on trying to optimize it more if at all possible maybe sometime this weekend. Also planning on possibly optimizing some registry entries for communicating via Internet. If there is an equivalent MTU setting like on PC's then that needs to be optimized because if you're going from GPRS to WiFi or 3G the settings won't be the same.
Edit: One more thing, if you didn't know about the opera.ini file here is a little info on that. I'm working on figuring out the best settings for this as well. Since I don't know when I'll have time to finalize this here is the info so you guys can look into it yourselves and not have to wait on anyone. ;-)
The file is located on your device at:
\\Application Data\Opera\opera.ini
You can find most of the preferences defined here:
http://operawiki.info/OperaINIFiles
I haven't had a chance to find where in the registry you can find connection optimization data but I know there are programs out there that you can setup profiles for each connection type, GPRS/WiFi/3G/etc...I wonder if these programs allow you to setup MTU's and other settings. Can anyone provide info on this?
Today when I used my Opera it was okay
It appears that our units are having erratic sluggishness at times. Most of the time it is fast but for no apparent reasons things started freezing up.
I'm begining to suspect this might be due to compaction thread activities going on, where the file system just simply takes up most of the available resources.
I thought the following information might be useful in order for us to understand what is really going on with our device.
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/03/16/552996.aspx
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=106009
What does everyone else think?
Everynow and then when I click on a URL in an email etc Opera does not launch. The wait cursor spins and spins to no end. I then try to start Opera myself using its icon ... same result. I close all running applications wondering if this is memory related and try Opera again ... no difference. So in short I've had it with Opera for now so I want to go PIE way.
Does anyone know how I can change the system default such that each time I click on a URL PIE opens up instead of Opera?
Thanks a lot for all your help.

Pocket Wikipedia

Pocket Wikipedia, hand-checked selection from Wikipedia which is about the size of a fifteen volume encyclopaedia (24,000 images and 14 million words).
It includes the best of Wikipedia as well as many thousands of pages of extra material specifically selected to be of interest to children who follow the UK National Curriculum and similar curricula elsewhere in the world. The articles have been cleaned up and checked for suitability for children.
Works on PocketPC, Windows and Linux
Download from http://www.free-soft.ro
Fails on HTC Touch HD with Opera
On my HD, any menu item in Pocket Wikipedia launches the link in Opera, which is unable to process any further clicked links.
It seems PW launches the default browser, where it should really stick to embedding an IE control. Any PW links should trigger a decompression of the topic from the huge file, which doesn't happen with Opera.
Does anyone know of a workaround?
Same problem here. It starts Opera Mobile instead of IE.
I tried making Opera Mobile the NON-default browser (by unchecking the "set default browser" box in the setting menu). PW was able to launch IE but IE just got stuck with the screen helplessly blinking. No Wiki text! No messages whatsoever! Had to shut down IE manually.
Wonder if Anyone could get PW working.
There is big problems with special chars like é, à, î, etc...
I shifted to WikiPock, far better despite a little cost.. Works like a charm

Skyfire 0.8 Beta Release Notes
Released: September 24, 2008
Skyfire is a new experience that brings the full internet to your mobile. Watch videos on YouTube or Hulu, connect with your friends on Myspace or Facebook, shop on Amazon or listen to music. Can you do it on your computer at home? Then you can do it on Skyfire on the go.
Skyfire is fast, easy to use and available for free on many smart phone models.
Skyfire 0.8 Beta is a new beta release of Skyfire for Windows Mobile (version 5 or 6). This release has been enhanced with both requests from our active community and new additions that we think will make Skyfire a better experience.
We greatly appreciate our beta community. Their support, active participation and feedback on the forums at http://support.skyfire.com/ helps us to constantly improve the product.
What’s new in Skyfire 0.8 Beta:
Skyfire 0.8 Beta has been under development for the past 4 months, integrating more than 1000 fixes and enhancements. The major focus of this release was to enhance usability, make the experience smoother, increase responsiveness, and improve audio and video quality.
* Contextual Zoom: Let’s you simply and quickly get to exactly where you want to be on the page. Skyfire’s zooming capability has been improved, and now the camera corners feature shows you a match with major screen elements within its view.
* Super Bar: Use our handy new SuperBar to perform a search or enter a URL from a single field – it’s a great time and space saver that is easily accessible.
* Content sharing: You can now share web content by SMS. We even make the URL short enough that it will fit easily into a SMS text message. Especially useful for the really long URL’s used by many sites. You can now also share Skyfire itself with friends by SMS or email.
* Faster application launch: Skyfire launches much more quickly so you to get your content quicker.
* Video and audio: We’ve improved the quality of both video and audio, so you can enjoy a smoother playback experience.
* Reconnect - Skyfire will automatically reconnect, so you don’t need to restart when your wireless connection is dropped.
* Default browser: Now you can set Skyfire as your default browser. Clicking Web links in SMS or Email messages will automatically start Skyfire.
* Enhanced text entry allows you to more easily complete web forms right within a page. First you can enter the text right on the page. Plus you automatically move to the next form element (text field, list, radio button, or checkbox) after you have made a form entry using the ‘OK’ or ‘Enter’ keys.
* Content download: Allows you to download images and other content from most web pages.
* Home screen integration: Allows you to add a Skyfire search and URL bar to your Windows Mobile Today screen, so you can enter what you are looking for right away without first starting Skyfire.
* Mobile site support: If a website also has a mobile version, Skyfire can optionally hint to you about the availability of a mobile alternative. With the new mobile site indicator, you’ll get a quick link to access the mobile version – then you can decide if you want the mobile or full website.
* Bookmarks have been significantly enhanced – giving you much better control.
* Additionally we enhanced the start page: have the top news items accessible immediately via a headline widget.
Downloading and Installing:
To be able to use Skyfire, you first need to sign up for a Skyfire account at http://www.skyfire.com/register. Additionally you need a supported phone, e.g. Windows Mobile 5 or 6 (for Skyfire Beta 0.8) or Symbian (S60 3’rd Edition, for Skyfire Beta 0.6). Please note: We currently only the US is supported.
If you are already registered then simply log into your existing account at http://www.skyfire.com/users/login and download the installation file, or request a SMS to be sent to your phone. Download the file and start the installer. There is no need to uninstall Skyfire first – simply overwrite the existing installation during the process. No worry: your cookies and bookmarks will be preserved.
If you are new to Skyfire and you need to register, provide at your Name, Email and Phone number on http://www.skyfire.com/register. You will be sent an Email and SMS with a URL to complete your registration. Follow this URL (on your phone or PC Browser), and complete the registration. Once registered, you can immediately download the correct installation file for your device. If you downloaded the installation file on your PC you must first transfer it to your phone. Start the installer on your phone and follow the instructions. Once you start Skyfire you will be prompted for your Email address and the password you provided during registration. This will be just once, and you will not have to enter it again (remember the password though to log into your account!)
Known Issues:
* Installation: When the client receives an upgrade notification after resuming from the background it might not successfully resume (Issue 2923). Please exit Skyfire and start again.
* Uninstall: Skyfire uninstall might not be successful or complete when Skyfire is active at the time of uninstall (Issue 1861). Please exit Skyfire first before uninstall.
* When leaving the phone idle for more than 5 minutes Skyfire will display the start page (Issue 2892)
* Downloading files with long filenames might truncate file extensions (Issue 2726)
* Myspace.com: Have to zoom in to 100% to be able to click the log-in button (Issue 2115)
* Mobile site hinting and support: some ‘mobile’ sites are rendering similar to a full web page (e.g. zoom and horizontal scroll). Often this is due to the web page not reporting itself as being mobile. We are looking for a solution.
* Playing video for a long time (> 5 min) might disconnect Skyfire (Issue 2827).
* Non standard SIP’s (Soft Input Panel, e.g. on-screen keyboard) might interfere with Skyfire operation and showing artifacts
* Very long web pages might get cut off at the bottom (Issue 2800)
* Back and Menu soft-key buttons might disappear from screen (Issue 2793). Please use the right soft-key, it usually will bring the on-screen keys back onto the screen.
* In some cases the page might scroll to a different location when entering text into a text entry field (Issue 2678, 2729)
* When Skyfire is in the background the toolbar may become visible on Windows Home screen when switching programs in windows, or locking the phone. (Issue 2732)
* Skyfire URL bar becomes unresponsive when device was in standby mode. (Issue 2892)
* Links to media files (MP3’s etc) currently only play back, and do not initiate download.
* Scrolling through very long list boxes has slow behavior (Issue 1202)
Not supported:
* VGA phones not supported yet (e.g. HTC Touch Diamond etc).
* DivX and XviD Video formats are not supported.
* Quicktime movies which require playback external of browser not supported (Quicktime clips embedded in page are supported).
* FTP browsing and access is not supported (e.g. URL’s with ftp:// )
* Anchors (In-page links) not supported
YOU MUST BE A BETA TESTER TO BE ABLE TO USE THIS SOFTWARE
currently there has been issues with loggin in with this new version...it has been mentioned and will be fixed soon
*yawn*
I'm not an impatient soul by nature but this experience has been one long frustration. It's been months since I registered, haven't heard one peep out of these people since the SMS message I received. Tried accessing their website today and many pages are just missing, and the titlebar says "Welcome to Skyfire!, Error"
Tried logging in to "my account" and was helpfully told that my email address had not been verified yet (!) - basically a polite way of saying "screw you."
I was really looking forward to trying this browser, and although I totally understand the idea of limited public beta testing, being in the software test field myself, the almost complete unresponsiveness of this group to "unverified" users is awfully irritating.
Meanwhile, Opera 9.5 is already a fantastic browser, and I just can't imagine what features Skyfire is going to have that is going to make me overlook my feelings of being ignored and forgotten by a company I wanted badly to support.
It's been a long time since a company has put me off quite this badly. Even MS communicates with the users once in awhile. I don't yet really hope this effort fails, but at this point it could hardly be said it deserves to succeed.
AJ
Finally INTERNATIONAL users can use this app???
Don't Like The Idea Of The Sms .. Login.... What Is Gold?
I Prefer Opera
I installed the new version and when i open Skyfire it ONLY shows the top Unibar, Back, and Menu. Nothing else, just a gray screen. I did manage to get the home page to come up once, but that was it. It's wierd. it thinks a page is loaded cause it will let me double tap and then if i get lucky and click on a link(i assume it's a link that i can't see) it will attempt to load the page...
Have already rebooted. Will try a reinstall...

I believe that they are having some issues with the authentication process, so be patient. You got further than I did though
opera is still more of a desktp browser. the text input for skyfire and loading speeds are still faster, but navigating the pages inskyfire is no where near as smooth as opera. good improvements.. but the major features skyfire were lacking are still missing:
still get the checkerboard when scrolling through a page
smartfit is not very smart.. columns are used in thumbnail view which doesn't really make sense
when you press up and down on dpad while typing text entry, it closes out of the box.. so how do you see wat you were typing before?
overall this versin is better.. but opera is still winning... especially since now it is supporting flash
good stuff though hope to see navigation improved!

Damn so you downloaded the .80 version?
I downloaded and installed .80 with no problem. I could log into the web site and download.
However, when my Skyfire tries to connect on the handheld it tells me that the username/password are not correct.
I don't get it.

M2D users?
A newbie question...
Can anyone tell me how to make M2D internet widget run SkyFire rather than Opera?
The new 0.8 release is da*n quick, presents all websites great, and I like it more than Opera, however I don't want to lose the widget and put SkyFire in the launch area only...
Thanks

Hi all,
What I want is to have the same Gmail interface than the iphone, and not the poor m.gmail.com interface ....
Opera does not do that, and Iris Browser not anymore (it worked but now it does not work anymore).
I live in France so Skyfire is not for me fr the moment....
How should I do then ?
Thanks for replies.
