Can anyone recommend a nice new case for my wizard, in an ideal world i'd like to be able to perform all functions without removing the device from the case, including sliding out the keyboard. Any suggestions of particular cases?
AFAIK, the only cases that allow you to use the keyboard without removal are the PDAir cases. I have the leather flip case; it works pretty well although the Wizard is a bit loose-fitting.

this case looks good but i've not found any reviews, it should allow you to use the keyboard while still in the case.

I am confused, at the top they show credit cards coming out in what appears to be a couple of credit card size slots, then at the bottom there is another image with nothing but Memory Card slots. Doesn't look like the same case and the top images are so small I can't see if it has everything I need. The top image is what I am looking for (want the credit card and memory slots) but need to see the rest blown up to know for sure.
seido is releasing a new case later this week or early next week....
I use this one from Brando:
http://shop.brando.com.hk/o2xda.php
I also have the PDAir one, but it doesn't protect the phone very well.
I sent an email to sedio describing the case style I'm looking for.
"The holster clip that you sell is almost exactly the style of case I'm looking for, but instead of a belt clip, I wanted a window to see the screen. I wan't to keep it in my pocket without worring about the screen getting messed up, but I don't want a fully enclosing case that would add extra bulk on the back side. If you made something like this that allowed access to all of the buttons, clipped over the minisd card to secure it in place, and had a window to view the screen, I would be very interested in buying it. Something that would allow me to use the phone and scroll around without having to remove or open the case, so I would only need to take it off to use the touchscreen, keyboard, or change the storage card. If this is possible or something your company is thinking about making, please let me know."
Does that style sound good to anyone else? I originally wanted to be able to use the keyboard with the case on, but I don't think it would be possible with this style. This would allow you to use the phone exactly like a smartphone with the case on.
They said they'd talk about it with their R&D department, but i think if they got some e-mails from other people saying they'd like something like that, it might speed things along.
I've been using the pdair leather flip for awhile now.
It is well made and does allow you access to the keybd easily.
Adds some thickness though.

My screen piece isn't right. Is it possible to remove it without damaging the screen?
Also, There is a piece that I cannot figure out where to stick. It was on the sheet with the screen, immediately below it. The part of the device that corresponds to this location does not have enough surface area to be covered by a piece this shape. It seems that the piece will cover part of the buttons (on hook/off hook) as well, if applied.
Thanks!
You have the same problem that I faced! I was sent a set for HERM100/HERM300 (Cingular, i-Mate, O2, Orange, Dopod 838, T-Mobile), and not for HERM200 (TyTN, Vodafone, Dopod 9000, Softbank). They are differ by buttons layout (see Wiki).
Unfortunately, ShieldZone service is awful and does not reply to my mails.
ooh. that's not good. I think i'm going to fight it w. my CC then. How long ago did you email them?
A week ago already. I can't call them because it is hard for me to understand English by phone.
Hi, has anyone removed their screen shield yet?, mine had a line in it, but I kept it on because I needed some type of screen protection, and didn't have another brand handy at the time, I'm concerned about screen damage upon removal cause this stuff sticks fairly well, and left behind residue, I had a full kit, and just peeled most of it off because it was trash, but I left the battery cover, and screen shields on.
Shieldzone is awful. I bought a screen protector back when the Cingular 8125 came out. It was hard to put on and it had small dots all over the screen which I found very annoying. So I call them up and they told me to send it back. I shipped it back via USPS First Class with delivery confirmation. According to USPS it got to the destination but Shieldzone claimed they never received it. They never response to my emails and when I call them up they hang up on me.
Well, now I can say they are not awful, probably just stupid...
Having still nothing back from them via e-mail, I just have received a new shield set from them! The funny thing is that, although it is marked "HTC TyTN" (just like the first one), it is the same cut for HERM100, not for HERM200 once again!
So, there is a good guy there who had read my complain and decided to send me a replacement, but there is no a person smart enough to check whether they make them all similar (=wrong) or not.
Also looks like most of their people are unable to read. They couldn't read my mail describing their fault, but also they couldn't read internal instructions. On a paper inside the envelope it was a printed instruction to send this order via UPS. The instruction was even painted over by a green marker. But the person who actually was sending it had sent it via USPS, just like the original order...
OK, now I have enough pieces to cut the full shield from. But I have no an intention neither to write them once again, nor to deal with them in the future. I don't like gambling.
To add some fairness...
The replacement order is dated the same day that I e-mailed them. That's fast reaction! If they were thinking before doing it would be great! I'd be satisfied by immediate appologies and a change on their web site (if they just can't make it for TyTN actually), but they prefer to waste their money and loose reputation instead...
I guess I got lucky. Mine said just HTC TyTN and it was correct for the Cingular 8525,
I will say it took me and my wife about an hour to figure out how to put it on though... 7 years of college went to waste it looks like
A lot of people do not like the screen, but I love it. I have a slightly jittery hand and the "stick" helps keep me from selcting the wrong thing.
Granted because I have the Cingular 8525 there are some places that are not covered (because the HTC TyTn has the video conference button and eye.) But all and all I feel much better protected because of it.
Good luck...
hello everybody.
i'm planing on purchasing a herald device anytime soon. before doing so i was wondering about the resistance of the screen. how do you guys carry your device around? i'm the type of guy who simply slides it into my jeans pocket. i was wondering if this might be a problem with such a big screen. (i currently own a nokia N70... which btw is so slow i didn't know that it was possible to build such a slow device in the 21st century... anyway...) obviously i haven't had any screen resistance problem with my N70 due to the solid screen.
i currently alos allways place a self-adhesive clear screen over my screen so it doens't get scratched, and replace it from time to time... how do you handle scratch issues?
hopefully you guys can shed some light on the issues above. thanks a lot in advance.
ohh and while i'm at it... i was hoping to use the herald with the least possible stylus interaction (allready checked the phone pad thread for one handed sms .. is it possible to use most core functions for daily business (calendar entries, phone calls, sms writing, etc) without having to use the stylus (how painful is it?) and or doing so one handedly?
Not sure exactly what you mean by :screen resistance", but if you're asking does the screen scratch easily, the answer is no. I never use a case and always carry in my pockets or in my hand I've yet to scratch it.
And as far as using the stylus, I never have to use it. The touch screen is good enough where unless you are editing a large spreadsheet or something really small and tedious, you'll probably never need to use it
I always carry it in my jeans pocket without a problem yet. Also, I use a Brando Screenprotector (http://shop.brando.com.hk/screenprotector.php) to protect my display from scratches.
I just won a slightly used unlocked 8525 on EBay. Since I won't have a warranty, it seems like a good idea to verify that the device is in full working order as quickly as possible.
Do any of you have tips on what you would do to fully (or almost fully) exersice an 8525?
Theres no menu like the nokias have to see if its ever been serviced but theres a few things i do when looking at pocket pc's although i've never purchased a used one because i haven't found one's which look that sound.
First thing i would do is look at its physical state. Scratches etc. which will show if it's been dropped or handled roughly.
Second i'd take off the batter cover and look at the screws to show if they've every been removed. You can tell this by either seeing small scratches on them. Also the I-Mate Jasjam screws are black so you can tell easily if a screws been in them.
Then i'd remove the battery and the sim card(if inserted) and see if theres a little felt/paper square. This should be white and changes color (to purple i believe) if it ever got wet or moist. Inspect the little bit of the circuit board thats visible under where the sim would go for imperfections.
Now I'd go back to physicl aspects. Look at the screen, if it has a screen protector thats marked up, remove it and inspect the LCD and see if itself has scratches, if there are scratches and they are small i'd suggest the pocketpctechs screen protector which covers up blemishes.
Press the bottons on the front and sides and see if they feel well (are they hard to press, do they got stuck etc.) Slide the device open a couple of times and see if its locks into place or not and if its rough/smooth to open/close.
When its open i'd go and press each button on the keyboard and see if any of them stick and look for things as you would with the other buttons.
Then turn on the device and test all the buttons, and the keyboard on a new notepad. See if the screen is aligned by opening a new note and draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner, make sure the line is under the pen. Align the screen and keep in mind when you did it and cross your fingers and hope it stays aligned. If it does have the SA issue, go to the wiki for a fix.
I guess thats all i can think of right now... hope it helps you in deciding whether you want to keep the device or not. Oh yah, also check if the memory slot works and inspect the Mini-Usb port, and the stylus silo (haven't heard of it becoming loose on the hermes yet)
Good luck and hopefully you got no problems with it and its a sound device. Enjoy it and welcome to the Xda-Devs!
Thanks fone_fanatic! Looks like some great advice that will help me make a checklist.
Having come from a Palm T3 + a Sony Ericsson T637, I'm long overdue for an upgrade and really excited about converging devices with the 8525.
dont forget to make a phone call bring your sim, sometimes people forget the obvious
WooHoo!
It tests out great. There were only two problems
1)a slight creaking in the top left corner - really more an annoyance than anything else
2)The phone was sold as unlocked but prompted me for the unlock code which the prevous owner did not know. This problem was easily overcome with the unlock solution posted on the Wiki.
Thanks for the testing tips as they help me feel far more secure in my purchase!
Now I just need to get used to the PocketPC OS (seems a little complicated coming from PalmOS). After I get the feel of the OS figured out, I will start trying to write some apps.
Hi creaking top left corner is actually fairly normal. The screw will be tight but it's not in the corner (see battery compartment). The screw passess through camera board and holds it slightly proud. If it really bugs you, you can remove back (a warranty voiding activity) a place a piece of papervas padding to take up slack - otherwise not a big issue.
Glad it's working fine
The voyage of discovery and frustration begins - enjoy
Mike
Enjoy your device. They really are the best PPC around.
Has anyone opted to use the supplied case and leave the keyboard at home? If so does it lighten the load, reduce the bulk, and work pretty well? I realize it removes the ability to view the secondary screen, but for those who don't use the keyboard for much this seems like a way to mitigate the "pain" of carrying the thing around, especially if a bluetooth headset with caller id is used. Anyone?
Thanks

Do you have a different supplied case than the one with the Ameo?
I can't use the secondary screen with mine as the case isn't transparant.. :-/
Stock case is fine....for the moment!
Yeah ive opted to use the case without the keyboard, im finding im getting on with it well (especially since I purchased a Jabra 8010 headset, with caller id and vibrate)
This is great (altho im still getting used to 'whats that vibrating noise? oh its the headset, oops!' hehe!)
I find these work well together, it doesnt matter that I cant see the caller display thats there when the keyboards there.
As regards to typing, ive tried all of the options that are available Resco Keyboard, SPB Keyboard, the lot, and they are all ok, but i still go back to the standard keyboard on the bigger setting so the keys are easy to push. 90% of the time, with fast typing im fine, and happy not to be carrying the keyboard round, which i find worse than the onscreen keyboard.
Its not because of the feel of the keys on the hardware keyboard, its the layout. I just cant get used to it, and ive tried. I dont find it impossible to type, and I guess if i used it more then id get used to it, but the benefits of not carrying it around, outweigh the benefits of having the keyboard with me.
Id prefer a 'Skin' type of case, but even then, id be worried about the screen getting damaged, so for now, im happy to stick with the standard case that came with the Ameo.

I don't have an Advantage yet. I'm in the market for a replacement for my Wizard and have it narrowed down to either the Advantage x7501 or the Nokia E90. But there are so many production problems appearing with the E90 that I'm leaning heavily toward the 7501. Plus the OS (M$), is a known evil and my software for the Wizard will mostly work fine on it. If I do buy one I will likely carry it without the keyboard so long as I can do so while keeping the screen 100% protected, just as tomchap is concerned about.
I rarely use the keyboard on my Wizard and I suspect I would not use it much with the 7501 either, mostly because I don't need to compose much on my phone, and don't browse the web much either while I'm out and about. So for me the trick will be to find a way to carry it without the kb yet keep it protected while still being able to access the it quickly when I need to look something up in a rush. I have a BlueAnt v12 with caller id, so the phone can stay cased while I'm answering calls. FWIW my idea of an ideal case would be a crystal case with a flip up screen cover.
Thanks for the replies
I am putting the phone in my pants pocket without the keyboard. With the keyboard it is too thick. Without, it 'just' fits! W/O the KB the form factor is now in that sweet spot where I don't notice the bulk as much.
Plus, I am used to graffiti text input with my old Sony Clie, Palm OS, so leaving behind the kb is not a big deal for me.

Are you pocketing it while it is cased, or without? If cased, are you using the case that came in the box?
I think he puts the phone in his pocket without any case.
If so, in which direction does your screen point ?

I do the same and the screen is on my body/leg.
I found that this causes a lot of wear on the screen protector (you DO have one right?)
But i was too scared to have the LCD face outward just in case of a bump.
Yes I use the leather case that the 7501 came with.
I am more worried about the camera port getting scratched than the screen, which I have a screen protector on.

Hi Guys,
I bought one of these and as "good" as it may seem, just warning you off, or at least giving you notice.
The magnet affects the phone and operates the screen by it's self.
Well, that's a little miss leading. What it does is I think, is tell the phone that you have opened the slide.
So depending on your settings, whenever you attach the phone it will either unlock it, open the dialer, read your sms messages or start pressing the soft keys.
Apart from the ridiculously poor delivery (1st class postage arrive 7 days after shipping. A parcel from US came quicker" ) that I don't know whether to blame on them or Royal Mail, I must of got the one adapter with no bloody adhesive on the back! Industrial sticky tape needed, that's if I decide I can live with the unlocking!
*mods* Really sorry, I didn't notice the "accessories" thread. I only hang out in this one, I've only just noticed it.
Sorry to hear you are not very happy with this, i've had one for a while and i reckon its one of the best i've had. as well as being small and discreet the magnet holds the pda even when driving down dirt tracks and over speed bumps.
The magnet does occasionally set off the quick list but it has already been mentioned on this forum that it is activated by magnet it just depends where you put the adapter
i dont know about you guys but im keeping magnets well away from my device.

Do you have a Dual then? Where is your strip to attached the magnet?
After a bit of experimentation, if you place the strip horizontal just underneath the camera (in the center) then the magnet wont set off the phone!
Now I've fixed it with my own tape I'm really happy with it!
i've got mine right in the middle, covering the orange logo, after playi g with it a bit last night it seems to depend a lot on how quickly you move the dual towards the magnet and whether you go staraight towards it or come in from an angle. one thing i havent tried is disabling the quick menu, will give it a go later as i never use it anyway
