Hi all,
i read more and more people wanting to sell their brand new exec, BARELY USED... Are people disappointed by it and think it doesn't worth the money ???
I am really wondering what is wrong with it... and i don't have one yet, but i am thinking about getting one... now reading more and more bad reviews on it, dispointment and people selling it after less than a week of use... i am really hesitating to buy it, even though i ve waited it for many months !
What is your opinion about it and do you think it really worth 1000 € ??
Thanks,
Mike.
I would NEVER recommend it for a housewife, but if you are just a little bit tech savvy, AND have a weekend to spare setting it up according to guidance on these forums, it's great. If you do not, you could be extremely miserable with the speed and unacceptable bugs such as BT turning off.
I think a lot of it is people hoping to make a quick buck. I mean, £229 + £8 x 12 = £325 total outlay. People are selling them for upwards of £400 pretty much the same day with just about no risk and keeping a free 5mb/month sim card. Either that, or they just don't need a new handset and are taking advantage of the demand for Universals.
As a phone its no good for me just too fiddily, i use it as a data centre and pocket pc with a seperate phone, for this it is perfect
I think its a great little device. Don't get me wrong, if you expect it to have no bugs you will not be happy but as with all new technology, it will take time to iron them out.
In the meantime, I am happy to live with the minor glitches. It wont take long until the Exec is supported better (and also WM5) and this should be when this device comes into its own.
As for the functionality as a phone - I really am getting used to it

This is spot-on. That's exactly what a few people are doing. Sure there are some people who have been disappointed with theirs, but honestly, what were they expecting? Most people who are complaining are either newcomers to the PDA/Phone world, or they're installing every damn WM2003 software they've ever bought and killing their machines with incompatible software. IMHO
I couldn't ever personally justify €1000 for any phone/PDA device, but for €500 it is an excellent machine. I love mine. Perhaps I'm biased. Just remember that it's an early release of WM5 and there are a few bugs. They'll be fixed in time though and they're not fundamental IMHO.
@xiasma, which tariff is £8 per month? Can you purchase this online?
I agree with what's been said so far. If someone came to this even from a Nokia smartphone I think they could be disappointed, as they are phones first and pda/gadgets/whatever second whereas the Universal is more like a high-end pda with a phone that happens to be built in. Even coming from a non-phone PDA (as I did) takes a little getting used to imho, since I used to have a far more cavalier attitude to installing stuff on my ipaq whereas now with the Universal I need to consider "will people still be able to ring me if I install this shareware demo?". Stability and reliability is very important for a phone, but for a small portable computer I tend to think that features and what-can-I-install-next are key. These are almost mutually exclusive characteristics and so finding the right compromise is a fairly personal decision I think - although it will probably divide into those two camps.
Going off-topic a bit, it would be nice if there were a 'phone only' kind of safe mode on the Universal, so if you do get something buggy going on you can set it to phone-only mode until you get round to sorting the problems, safe in the knowledge that at least the phone will work.
What do you think?

It's the Data 5 tariff - purchase from an O2 shop, not online. You maybe able to buy it over the 'phone.
I think people are after quick bucks as well, to me the Exec is buggy, not because of the device but rather the reliablities of WM5. Performance wise it's decent even with O2 active, my major issue is I can't get most of my most often used softwares to work properly in WM5.
Size wise, I was really surprised as it's not nearly as big as I originally imagined, it's only slightly bigger than my old IIs. I think couple ROM upgrades, I'd love this thing
I am glad you guys started this thread. I too want to purchase an HTC Universal, but was having second thoughts because of the bad comments I read about it.
I do have one question though, "Is it plague with soft resets?" How often do you have to perform a soft/hard reset?
First, my hypocrisy: I have an XDA Exec, I've let the opportunity go by to return it and I'm probably going to persevere.
Next, the rant...
I think it is a complete disgrace for this product to have been released as it currently is. It shouldn't be necessary to spend a weekend getting a consumer device up and running. The bugs in the software are not "kinks", they are key pieces of functionality that simply do not work. Microsoft, O2, Vodaphone would have picked up these within 1 day of normal operation without installing ANY other software and yet they release the product and charge you for it.
Here are some of my most obvious examples:
* The phone pad T9 entry method does not work. On a clean O2 active install, this works until the first soft reset and then no more. Using the corporate mode, it works for a while and then stops.
* Microsoft Voice command, which has a link for purchase displayed directly on the Windows Mobile 2005 MS website does not display contact information when dialing a contact.
* About the first thing you have to install is an app to properly close applications because the memory management is so poor that you're constantly having to soft reset, or go into settings and close all programs. Ok, perhaps not a bug, but surely within a day of using a beta of the device ANY MS employee could go "oh, well, I guess our backgrounding method of memory management doesn't work".
I have hard-reset my device many times and yes, it's possible to make it work provided you put enough attention into it, but it's supposed to be a productivity tool and yet it's taken many more hours to use than it's saved.
This is the kind of experience the world had to put up with when Windows 95 was launched and I thought Microsoft had finally reached a point where they were able to release decent software (like Windows XP), but clearly they're still happy to release rediculously low quality products.
What I do plan to do is to harrass O2 as much as possible regarding this. Make them wish they'd never sold the product because of what it's costing them to support. As MS now have OEM resellers carefully positioned between the end user and themselves perhaps doing this will eventually put pressure on MS to stop insulting us.
What's sad, is that they're doing it again - Palm have just decided to start running Windows Mobile, so it's only a matter of time until the Microsoft monopoly has been extended to PDAs as well. And the crazy thing is that this isn't because of it even being a nice product to use (bugs aside). How can MS (who have been developing software for such a long time) be so completely clueless when it comes to software design. Reading this site confirms that I'm by no means the only one complaining:
* Nice, expensive crystal clear screen, brand spanking new OS and web browser. Oh, you can't browse in 640 X 480. Never mind...
* No full screen terminal services. Never mind...
* Let's not bother with a task switcher. It's much easier to go through the menu every time.
* Why provide a decent file explorer, people will never use it.
Every time, the support community comes up with nice freeware apps that fill all the holes and on the next release of the OS, all the same holes are there. It's like MS lock all the app designers and developers in a room and don't let them near an end user.
Believe it or not, this post not from an old Microsoft hater, but I'm surely becoming a new one.
There, I'm done...
Dave
It is better than the BlueAngel!!!
I received mine in from O2 the other day and from just running Win2005 and included software, this device really seems to be an improvement over my MDAIII, which I have never yet been able to work solidly in a years's time of playing with it. The build quality is very good. However, my 2 primary 3rd party applications - Goodlink push email and Tom Tom Navigator 5 - do not intall and work. I have been told that the Tom Tom will work if the CABs are transferred in manually, but I have not yet tried that. My Dictionary and Bible programs installed and work fine from their SD chips. But the only thing now is to wait for everybody to tweak apps to Microsoft 2005. This device should start to take off after that starts to occur. However, once HP with their iPaq 6515 upgraades to 2005, then that should be major competition to HTC - even though HTC makes those as well
There are absolutely, catagorically, 100% certainly, no arguements, LESS BUGS in my brand new WM5 JasJar than any WM2003SE device I've owned previously.
I agree with some points made though, software which works on WM5 is few and far between, and even if you find some which says it works, it may still cause problems...Look at SPB Pocket Plus which slows the JJ to a crawl if you put a storage card meter on your today screen.
My advice is to be patient and accept that because you've bought the first WM5 device, there will be some time to wait until there's software available that's not only "Compatible with...", but actually "Designed for..." WM5.
Very pleased I didn't own a WM2003 device older device then. It still doesn't change the fact that they've released a product with full knowledge that it doesn't work.
In terms of other applications, I completely accept that installing old apps on WM2005 may cause problems. I'm refering to the product "out the box".

What "doesn't work"?
Everything that came with my JasJar works perfectly.
Your t9 problem is not something I've heard anyone mention before. If you've done a hard reset and it still doesn't work, I'd send it back to O2 and get them to replace it?
I've already taken it back twice and it's been swapped out both times. There are a number of people on this forum who have had the same problem. Here's one posting.

I guess it's possible that if I were to flash to the imate ROM it might work, but then I lose my warrantee.
TBH, I disagree with just about EVERY point on your list
I'm certainly not aware of glaring bugs or omissions. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm using an MDA Pro - perhaps the XDA Exec's extra software is the cause for most gripes.

I hate T9 so I've never tried it on the Universal. Then again, with a full keyboard, why would I?

I use voice command all the time and it works PERFECTLY for me. That's well beyond my expectations. Now I can't say I've noticed your issue with contacts, but then again, when I use voice command it's when I'm not really using the screen or keyboard.

Totally and utterly disagree
First of all, MS are trying to get people away from traditional Windows thinking of starting and stopping applications. They want to give the perception of everything just always being there and ready. This wasn't an easy decision for them, but I believe it was the right one. OK, for all us techies and PC-savvy types, yeah, we know what's going on in memory. But lots of consumers (your mum, for example) don't. And this is actually a behavior of the APPLICATIONS, not of Windows Mobile. Take a look at the developer's guidelines and you'll see.
Also, if you want to *terminate* an application that was not designed to be terminated using the (X) button, go to Settings, Memory, Running Programs. You can close any or all applications there. And that's been part of Windows Mobile since at least 2002, if not sooner.
I have hard-reset my device many times and yes, it's possible to make it work provided you put enough attention into it, but it's supposed to be a productivity tool and yet it's taken many more hours to use than it's saved.

That's your experience, but so far removed from mine it's untrue! Then again, I've installed almost nothing extra on my Universal.

Another brave decision for MS is to try to make files easier for consumers to understand. The idea is
"I don't really understand file systems. Why can't I keep all my documents together? In fact, why do I even need to know where my documents are kept? I just want my spreadsheets to be presented to me when I go to Excel; I want my pictures to be presented to me when I go to picture viewer; etc"
MS had a stab at this with Windows 95 and "My Documents". They have abandoned this in Windows Vista in favour or something more like Windows Mobile's "show you what you need when you need it". All these utilities really will become obsolete for all but the most techie users. My companies products are following the same ideology in desktop and mobile software.

The T9 PhonePad bug is described in other threads on this forum and I've found that my device has the same problem. However, I don't personally find this in any way restrictive since the Universal has ...umm... a full, usable, hardware keyboard.
All these PDA/phone machines have been best after several experiments with their configuration. I did a hard reset this morning so that I cleaned off all my experimental applications' legacies and now I'm running trusted, tested apps that work well and bring huge positive benefits.
However, people who just want a machine to work out of the box will find Microsoft's core applications are crap and empty of features. I fully agree with daveb1976 about that. I disagree that they're particularly buggy though.
Fortunately I (and many others on these forums) actually enjoy messing about with the configuration and tweaking the machines to get them working 100% the way we want. It's part of the pleasure of owning them IMHO. Not everybody will share this pleasure, though, and so some frustration is understandable.

Again, I completely disagree. In fact, of almost ALL the 100s of computers I've used and owned, I'd say that it is less true of the MDA Pro than it is any other computer (maybe except the Z88)

I looked at the pointui site today, i was hoping the updated it but i founf this at

Pointui Home 2 In Development
15-October-2008
No prizes for guessing a new version is in development. Those who donated received an email about our intentions moving forward with Home version 2.0, we'd like to that everyone who kept it to themselves.
While we're behind on our original targets, what have completed so far is fulfilling everything we want for a second version.
We have every intention on keeping everyone informed about what is going on during the development and that starts with one of the most important points raised by our community, a paid version of Home.
There will be two editions of Home 2.0, free and paid. They will differ in the depth of functionality. Home 2.0 Free will in its own right be a Today screen replacement with functionality that other companies charge for. Home 2.0 (as the paid version will be known) will offer a deeper level of the Pointui experience.
Details on what the differences will be in the free and paid editions and when alpha/beta testing commences will be announced in the near future.
this explaines a few things like:
Why we saw the start icon http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386233
And they would make a paid version.
and many more quistions.
Are you guys willing to pay for Pointui?
And what do you aspect of version 2?
Sorry for my bad english!
i hope this version will work with Omnia i900
I would pay for the full version. The app is already outstanding and if paying for it furthers customization options then I'd definitely cough up!
Im just want then to release the v2, cause they take ages to release any version.
If they continue like this they will release it by the year 2099
first, lets see if they get it done in a timely fashion
If you are going to pay you are better off buying SPB Mobile Shell as its suerb and has tons of extra skins for it. It also runs better than any other UI and ver crashes. So would I pay for PointUI 2? NO unless it is totally amazing.
I would not pay for it, there is throttlelauncher & ultimatelauncher which are free ! omg ! so no.

UltimateLaunch is NOT free!
Nope its not, but being nagware is as close to being free as pennypinchers are going to get. It also doesn't have any Advantages of more functionality if you pay for it.
In essence, if you can handle the nagging (and lets be honest, it not exactly a MAJOR inconvenience) it is free.
Thats not to say that you shouldn't register it. It will keep up developement of a fantastic piece of software.
Cheers...
Mind you, I haven't used it for a while and this may have changed.....
I don't know yet if I would pay for it or not. if it looks good, if doesn't tax my phone's memory too hard, if its fast in its operations, and supports my device then I would think about buying it.
Why not to pay, if you like the software, and support it ?
I trend to never understand why people won't pay for a software they use...
If it's freeware, there is no problem !
But if the dev wants to make his soft payware, please keep in mind that there are severals (many !) thousands of hours of coding behind that...
So, 2 solutions, in the case of PointUI :
1 - Still use the V1, wich is a fully functionnal version... and stay happy with it, or upgrade with the FREE V2 version (seen on the poinui's website, there will be a free V2 version...)
2 - Upgrade to a paying version with more "bell and whistle" and much more funtionnalities... and pay for all the hard work all the PoinUI have made...
I think the choice is ... binary !
Personnaly, i'm fed up with all these a-la-Iphone interfaces... Our devices are not made to be scratched with greasy fingers (i own a QTEK S200, and the touch screen is really not made for a 100% finger interface)
I've tested PoinUI, it is really eye-candy and smooth interface... But this is "only" a gift paper over my Today's screen
Soo i've uninstalled it, and prefer to keep my Today's screen as busy as possible...
Just my 2 (euro)Cents (and now, they are valuable, 0.27 us Dollars ! )
Why not pay for something if you think its useful AND it provides different functionality to other products? Obviously we cannot fully judge if 2.0 will be worth paying for but so far all the other software mentioned are nothing more than glorified launchers. If pointui goes the same route then there is really nothing worth paying for but if, as they say their customizations go deeper into the OS why not pay for it? Hopefully there will be a trial version and lets not forget there will still be a free version.
I really dont understand the growing unwillingness to pay for software, its not as though SPB Shell, which is often touted as being the best, is free. Or how about Thumbcal which is now commercial after starting out as a free product.
There is a wide range of free and commercial apps available so you do have a choice, but lets not drive away developers who are willing to produce applications for WM just because society has a "it better be free or else" mindset.
Sorry man... I prolly wont pay anymore... I would if it was anywhere before manila2D... but now that manila2D is released, i love it to death... sorry once again... home ran fine on my phone, just that it was very limited in functionality compared to Manila... But I wish you all the luck for all the people who cant run manila... i think the second best option for anyphone is PointUI... Congrats on v2 dev...
^^ manila 2d eats memory, pointui doesn't
Pointui eats BATTERY and manila 2d doesn't. but i'm also looking forward to the release.
IMO, the thing that killed PointUI was the LOOONG drought between updates. When the first release hit, it spread like wildfire through the community, and we were all ready and willing to pay for it. But then it just kinda dropped off the map. Now its coming back into play, which is cool, but now the UI race has some big-time players in the mix, which are free, and offer things that PointUI does not. It will do well for older machines incapable of running M2D, or the impending stable version of M3D - but instead of striking while the iron was hot, too much time has passed between releases. Its buying the DVD version of Iron-man - but after your buddy gave you a Blu-ray version. which do you keep?
I would remind you all that Manilla 2D is only free because it has been hacked out of new HTC phones... it's not 'actually' free software... only those who bought a phone with it on are technically licensed to use it...
For crying out loud, add an option to REVERSE THE SCROLL with the next version of PointUI. I don't understand why the developers are so stubborn with this feature, although all the other apps use the intuitive version of finger scrolling. What's the point of swimming against the current when You know there is a waterfall coming?
I'm not being funny BUT.
I've USED iPhone interface, SPB, Wisbar, TouchFlo3D, Throttlelauncher etc...
The one I keep coming back to is TouchFlo3D.
Now that's something isn't it?
People are cloning TF3D like they did with iPhone because it's so great.
And since TF3D is better (in my view) than iPhone, Diamond and Raphael users can perhaps relax and save the time seeking the best UI.
I've been using Manila 2D for a while now, and today I thought I'd give PointUI 1.51a a go again.
I now remember why I was a fan for so long! It's definitely better than M2D or TF3D in many aspects, so if v2.0 is an improvement that is customisable, supported and stable, then I'll definitely consider buying the full version.
When will it arrive is the real question!
Guys,
I'm looking into getting an Android (HTC Desire looks like the best Android machine but oh would love to be able to get hold of the Evo or similar).
A couple of grey areas I need to sort out are:-
1. Rich Text Format read & write.
2. Finance software.
Reference the Finance software, can anyone point me to having a read on what would be considered a suitable application that can allow me to use the finance program similar to how Cash Organizer on Windows Mobile works.
i.e. Have an index of Accounts, Register, Projects, Planner, Budget, Reports.
Accounts would list all the accounts.
Register would list all transactions within a particular account.
Projects ~ as it says.
Planner would list all future transactions so you can see at a glance what is coming out and what account it is going to.
Budget ~ as it says.
Reports ~ as it says.
My Brother who has a Desire tried briefly MyMoney but he told me it's not powerful enough.... however, I'd like to hear more on this from other users.
These two items are at the moment stopping me changing from Windows Mobile to Android.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Beards
Anyone have any ideas??
Hi Beards
Currently I'm using Financisto. It has everything you mentioned except the planner part, which I miss too. But it links your money operations to location and you can see reports based on location. Check it out and tell me what you think. If you'll find a better app please let me know.

Many thanks Mantas for your contribution.
You mention there is no planner with this software. Unfortunately, this is one of the most important factors, as I need to be able to add all my monthly repeated outgoings so that the finance program will look at them on the specific date and automatically add the item to a named account.
At present all my testing has to be carried out on my Brother's Desire as I am still in the deciding factor on whether or not to ditch my Windows Mobile HD2 and move on up to Android.
Have you tried MyMoney or any other application.
I will however ask him to install Financisto and get him to show me what it can and can not achieve.
Thanks again.
Beards.

I'de be interested to hear your comments ~ especially if it does what I am trying to replicate from Cash Organizer.
Does it offer a 'Planner' so you can plan your spending's in advance and see from a Tab what date a transaction would be due to be added?

There is a 30 day trial of it on the market place, search for Firewallet.

Yes, a direct debit planner is ideal.
I'll get my brother to download and test it out for me.
Thanks.
also check out easymoney. that's what I'm currently using after trying out several other options. I'm probably not as much of a power user as you, but I think easymoney can do what you want.
best of luck, and if you do find something perfect I'd like to hear your thoughts.

When I switched from WM to Android this was also one of my constraints.
Used to work with SPB Finance for years. It never really updated but did a very good job (planner included).
I have now found a good replacement in ClearCheckbook.com.
Is actually better as they also have a website account which syncs nicely with the Desire.
If by planner you mean repeating transactions then yes it is available.
Also have a good customer service .... quick at replying
Only downside is you need to pay for a subscription ....

Many thanks for the additional Apps to try.
My Brother is popping round tonight with his Desire in order I can try out a few of these titles.
I'll certainly post back which I found most comfortable in using.
Well, thanks once again Guys for all your input.... It has been most welcome and truly appreciated.
I've 'briefly' tried all the Apps you can install and can see both positives & negatives on all but admit these are based solely on my own personal requirements as one App may well suit one user very well whereas with another user it limits the usefulness.
Financisto ~ I found limiting to my requirements.
I was surprised there is no recurring payments or split transaction to name but two.
It was easy to navigate and in no time I was up and running with several accounts.
Location was different and useful. Definitely see a use for this.
Firewallet ~ I found the Bill Reminder (Planner) but it was limiting in the choices given.
Again I could not see any way to split a transaction and worse I could not find a category list.... Please update me if I got that wrong as again I only managed to test it out briefly.
EasyMoney ~ was by far the most professional App, both in it's design and operation of use.
There is so much you can play with this App and love.
Granted I personally would like more control over say individual category expense lists (ability to see at a glance how much each category has spent over a period of time) but of the three I tried EasyMoney held me captive longer.
With more time it could well be my choice... Next step is to purchase an Android and investigate it further myself.
ClearCheckbook.com ~ being an online accounts manager looks promising purely for the fact I can manage the accounts either on the Laptop or on the Android.
I did not get a chance to try this out; namely due to the fact I first need to create an account with ClearCheckbook and then see exactly what is transferred to the Android device.
It is one which I will investigate after I purchase my Android Phone so again my thanks Sjengie in bringing it to my attention.
Once again thank you all.
Without your input I would not have covered the ground I wish to undertake prior to my Phone purchase.
Cheers for the quick review. I'm after a finance app so I'll give some of these a try.
hi beards et al
I'm very much in the same boat as you & it is great to see I'm not the only one in this dilemma.
I will try easymoney again as I did not find it to be that good when I first looked into this a few months back.
I installed firewallet & got a quick response to a query from the developer re importing data so will try playing a bit more with that. (he advised me to create the accounts I want with a zero initial balance and then import transactions for each account one at a time. will definitely make living year to date transactions easier although I guess I'll have to add in all the categories too).
if you guys could share your methods of migrating your data across into yr new apps & any other tips & tricks that would be great!
also if there are enough of us cdnt we try lobbying a developer to tweak their app to our requirements or even get a WinMo dev to release an Android version of their app?
regards
Ansi

Thanks for the feedback Beards. Hope you get your Desire soon...
I'm also a SPB finance user on WM and I haven't found anything yet that does nearly such a good job for me on Android, (I've tried all those listed here and more) But another one to try is "Loot" it is free, there is a "pro" bolt on that costs money and adds a few extra features, for me it is one of the closest to SPB finance but still not close enough!
I'm currently still using my Touch Diamond 2 winmo phone for finance tracking (you'd be astounded how long the battery lasts if you leave it permanently in flight mode btw!)

Thanks... I'll mention this one to my Brother.
I know what you mean in not finding that perfect title.
Maybe it's because we are so much used to the WM application that we can only see what that particular title can give us.
I've loved using Cash Organizer for many years and I know no matter which Android application I find and use it's not going to give me the same as CO.
Having said this, I am sure there will be areas in Android where I did not realize I needed which I'll find and love.
As such I'm going to go in openly and receptive, to look only for the good in the program.
If I can't find the good then there's no point in afterward searching for the bad....
Now I need to focus my attention on getting my Android phone.
It's going to be difficult as my HD2 has for the past 6 months (or so) given me great service and I've been happy with the WM software.
But as we know, it's no point staying with a 'safe' product, you have to look outside the box to better your aims.
HTC Desire or Samsung i9000 Galaxy S
Don't you just love technology.
I don't know anything about this software, I just read a blog post about it...
http://www.mint.com/
Apparently its something from the iPhone that has just been brought to Android.
EDIT: Hmm...just been reading through and everything seems to be in dollars and how it "connects securely to nearly all US banking financial institutions". Could just be an American app.
EDIT 2: Just found this...
Does Mint.com support international banks?
Not yet. Currently Mint only supports US-based financial institutions. We hope to support financial institutions based outside of the US in the future.
Shame, looks pretty good.

Many thanks for the info and edited updates.... appreciated.
Well I took the plunge and 'Pre-Ordered' my first Android.
After a lot of deliberation I altered my choice in getting the Desire to now opt for the soon to be released Samsung GT-i9000 Galaxy S.
The problem is I will have to wait until the end of the month when shipment is expected.
So, to all who participated I won't be able to make any follow-up on the software titles until after this date, sorry.
Beards
I can feel the flames coming
OK I am definitely not disappointed with the Hardware itself. Great form factor and I converted a few of the office Apple fanatics to it... Some guys in my office actually bought the tab after seeing mine
It's my first Android device and... I am disappointed by Android (Flames coming closer) or more precisely by the lack of refinement of the "productivity" apps.
Let me be more precise: I come from the WM 6.5.5 world (boooh). Android OS is definitely more stable (No memory leaks, etc...) more finger friendly, etc... BUT also
* It has way less options, at least in its stock version vs my custom made WM ROM (Sure my Grandma could use it (This is iOSesque type of OS), but that's not exactly what I am expecting for myself)
* The email app, so much praised in many reviews is still way behind outlook for WM. I miss the little arrow sign indicating me whether the email was forwarded, replied, etc... Not even talking about all the options available in pOutlook that definitely simplify the everyday life. A lot of very simple things are just not there. If you have multiple attachments, you need to download them one by one (Have to wait for the first one to be downloaded to have the option to download the second one). Unbeded links and pictures are displayed immediately when in Outlook they are blocked first to protect you in case it's a fishing email. Etc, etc...
* You don't have a single box (Or let's say single app) for SMS, MMS, eMails
* Implementation of Activesync is not good, neither full. SMS are not synced, and there seems to be bugs and quirks here and there (Why the hell is my Sent box often TWO DAYS late on sync ?? Just havent found a way to fix this. It just refreshes... sometimes, when it feels like it)
* Copy and paste is not present everywhere, I cant seem to be able to copy from any text I see on the screen (In WM just long press and then you get the copy and paste menu and the ability to select some text). It's possible in some places that have been thought for, but not from anywhere
Etc, etc... I definitely appreciate the slickness of the OS, the smoothness overall (That said I believe my TP2 would also be super smooth with a Hummingbird processor on board...). The fact that it's a growing platform allows to have access to the latest apps while there was barely anything new for my TP2 these days. But yeah, honestly... a lot of the applications need more refinement. I guess this will grow with age (hopefully) but it's definitely not there yet at least out of the box
I am not saying this for the sole purpose of criticizing. I will keep my Tab and I do like it. But I thought the jump would be without regret and it's not the case for the moment. I feel more like I did a compromise and a move taht had to be (No interest in a closed platform like WP7 and can't stay on a dieing one). And hopefully some of you while reading me will point me to some solutions they found for themselves, some suggestions of third party applications. meanwhile I still go back and forth between my tab and my TP2 and I find it easier to email with the TP2 (OK the physical keyboard helps too) while also cant take my eyes off HTC Sense (This I know it's just up to me to make some effort and install the right stuff to have great home screens)
You have some valid points (copy & paste, sms+emails in one place) but the other features are so obvious.
You can't compare the native apps on Win (Outlook, Active Sync) that suppose to work well on Android. I wouldn't think this is a surprise.
Android definitely has a little bit of a learning curve. My EVO was my first android OS device and after learning the little quirks I am a borderline fanboy.
I am not sure I agree with the comparison to iOS. I think Apple does a lot more "dumbing down" where Android gives you more freedom but you have to learn how to use it. Apparently it's working well for Apple. Can't fault their success.
Are you missing copy/paste in a certain app? I used it just last night (just got my tab yesterday) copying my Launcher Pro plus key from an email to LP. Menu>More>Select Text>Copy, I think. Long press where you would like to paste.
Anyway, give it time. I think it'll grow on ya.
Yes you're right I was a bit unfair to compare with iOS
And yes it's true it's evolving the right way
Copy and paste: simple example. How do I copy amd pate text from a webpage?
I believe you have to press the menu button, go to 'more' and then hit 'select text'. After that gliding your finger over text will select it. Its still not refined because it doesnt add the two 'pins' to move your selection area...that is in Gingerbread I think.
More gives me only print, share page and page info...
Unfortunately...
Founds new bugs that are very unprofessional: some sms going to the wrong inbox
And some emails answers sent... Without the text I typed (empty)
And of course since I dont have the aent emails for the past 2 days I juat cant event check this
I understand it's normal to expect Microsoft technology to be better implemented by Microsoft. However if Google wants to be serious with Android in the enterprise world they need to work on their exchange implementation
honeatly this email problem is just incredible...
Forgot to add that even though there are lots of free apps, some of the very useful ones are not included by default. If you wnat a good RDP client --> $20 for instance (Free with WM) All adding up it makes Android a "luxuary" OS in some cases...
That said not to be unfair the market of free apps is quite impressive (compared with WM)
I think Android is great. The new Android 3D maps are amazing both on my Nexus One and Galaxy Tab.
That said, my single complaint so far is the lag in the native browser and with Dolphin HD. I can't say I blame this on Android OS because my N1 does not have this problem. I'm a noob so I blame this on Samsung.

Except that unlike Android, WM is not free in and of itself anyway, so the comparison is slightly flawed - only slightly though because as an end user you do not pay directly for WM, the OEM does!
Personally, I've found Wyse PocketCloud to be excellent, even in its free incarnation - it was so good, I bought the Pro version!
Of course, no OS is perfect - despite WM6s age, it still has some strengths. In many ways, it's a shame that MS threw the baby out with the bathwater with WP7!

Android gets a lot of blame for things that have been modified by the vendor. I've been on Android since the launch of the G1. One thing I can tell you is every device is different. HTC has their own Exchange client, same with Samsung. Many times I see their proprietary apps cause these problems. It's the price we pay for open.
The Galaxy Tab's ROM is pretty flawed. Typical for a first gen device. I'm counting the days till an update is released.
My suggestion is go with an Exchange client from the market. Touchdown (no longer called that) was generally considered the best or just hang on till the next update. For SMS I use Handcent which I love.

All enterprise apps demand big bucks. In Wimo's case that's a MS app hence free. But all the other enterprise stuff is $$$ for any platform. I agree with the other poster, PocketCloud is very good. I also have an Ipad and can tell you their apps are totally "luxuary" priced.
Give the platform more time. You're new and things are different so you're just going to see the negatives. Over time I would be shocked if you could even look at a wimo device...much less use it on a daily basis.

Yeah I think we can blame Samsung about this. It's a real shamr cause I answered in a similar fashion to the wrong girl... Got in little trouble... But in the end kind of funny
Anyway shame on Sammy on this one. Very unprofessional...
Been reading the previous posts. My point was not to be critical of the OS itself. I do believe it's a much better OS than WM. It was much more about the applications that are still rough on the edges and not as mature as for other platforms
another example: in the samsung messaging application you cannot click on an HTML link to go straight to the webpage. Which year are we? 2005?
I too am very happy with my TP2, but I want a 7" phone. Although the Tab is the most close, it is still not there: many web contents are still available to WM and iPad only, the CDMA versions cannot make calls and are too pricey for the sluggish built-in browser.

I have both now
Just need to find a good way to sync SMS between both...
Sad point is in the US you cannot have 2 SIMs with the same number. Otherwise would be living ina perfect world
Just found out it may not be possible to change my outlook calendar entries inthe Samsung calendar
i can delete but not move it to another dats
Maybe I am not doing it right... But we are getting close to a deal breaker
Honestly Android is a cool toy but feels so far from a professional well rounded product and only comparing with WM 6.5...
more and more diaappointed day by day..
This is why android is so great though...you said you had no complaints about the hardware being used, and I hear that a lot.
There are so many developers working on android devices including the tab trying to improve the UI and enable hardware acceleration etc.
I think that within a few months the tab will have roms that will fix or work around the various issues that are present in the current tab software.
Agreed android has a great future ahead
but there is quote some work to do. We are not there yet!!

I think the point is that Android scores lots of points where WinMo scores none, and vice versa!
My business uses Google Apps for Domains, so Android is a massive win for me. If your an MS shop, WinMo stills holds a great hand though 3rd party apps on Android can fill many of the gaps.
Over time we will see an awful lot of convergence - WP7 will get better and so will Android.
To be honest, for the most part, thus far Google have pitched Android as a consumer rather than business OS, and have relied on 3rd parties to provide full business integration. I expect 2011 will bring more to the biz table.

Sigh. Just had some disturbing problems with polaris office and I think this may be the straw that causes me to return the note before my date comes up on it. I just post this here in case other people are thinking about purchasing one or want to know its limitations.
I would preface this by saying I absolutely love this note, it works amazing, is fast, light, amazing build and am continually impressed by it. All the shortcomings are more of the android ecosystems issue.
So the issue, Ive been editing documents in Polaris office during meetings, and finally have noticed that polaris has been quietly corrupting my documents. Sure they look good, even edited. But when I open them in Word there are small but aggravating issues. The biggest is it breaks paragraphs, and I have no idea how to fix them in Word.
For example paragraphs st
art looking like this with th
e wording and word spacin
g all disjoined. And Micro
soft says if this happens yo
ur Document is corrupt.
I have found other people online and even on XDA complaining about this issue over a year ago, don't know if there is a solution but it doesnt seem like. I also wonder how I would get updates to Polaris (why isnt it in google play?).
Other problems include SNote not quite being up to par, and not being able to find a suitable replacement, although lecturenotes tries hard and may get there. Not being able to find a lot of high quality apps in other categories (e.g. childrens books/learning games). And it not playing nice enough with my groupwise/exchange appointments.
Darn I like this thing. But I keep thinking on the 26th Ill get an amazing SNote replacement (one note) with complete office integration, pluse my email will work fine. Oh and Ill be able to get unlimited learning games on an x86 tablet. Only downside the thing would probably only last 7-10 hours in battery life instead of the 2 days my notes been going. Hmmmmm
Anyone else notice this problem in Polaris? Solution?
Get a different app and keep your Note. Samsung doesn't make Polaris.

None of the faux-Office products are great; on the Note or any other Android device. I do OK editing existing documents but the more complex ones (outlines, tables, charts, graphs) can be challenging. I pretty much don't use formatting when I'm creating a documents from scratch and import it in to Word as text and finish it off there. You sound like an excellent candidate for a W8 tablet. Speaking of which, MS has said (via Europe) Office for Android is due late this year via TechNet and early next year generally.
Before you send it back, try this app as it is supposed to resemble MS Word really well, there is a free trial if you give them your email and register your interest:

Return your Note 10.1, and wait for the Surface.
Another great app worth looking at is OfficeSuite Pro and remember that sNote should receive a very nice update with the JB release that I am hoping/expecting before month's end.
Wait for the 4.1 update and maybe it'll be resolved

If you want to wait on W8 that's all good but bring money. Getting the same level of performance as the SGN10.1 with pen input will cost you many hundreds more.
Don't get the Surface - it's junk with that silly soft keyboard. How the heck do you even use it on your lap? I guess it's called "Surface" because you have to have a flat surface to use it.
Returning a device you love because an app that's available for it sucks? That's ... an interesting decision. You know Samsung's decision to bundle Polaris Office doesn't mean you have to use it, do you?
Softmaker Office is a very popular alternative among XDA members. Last time I looked, they only had the word processor available on the Play store, not spreadsheets, presentations etc. You can probably get them from the developer's website.
There are also plenty of other alternatives. Kingsoft Office gets VERY good reviews on the play store - I'm tempted to try it just from the reviews. OfficeSuite Pro is also apparently good on a tablet.

thanks for the tip. I just got this from the play store and it seems really good so far
Thanks for all the tip. Installed OfficeSuit Pro, and Softmaker and QuickOffice pro. Softmaker worked the best, but none of them had the ability to input with the stylus (e.g. freehand draw) like polaris does. Polaris really sold me on this tablet, I mean sure, it doesnt have onenote, but who needs onenote when i can instantly open the doc from my dropbox, make the notes I need, and finalize when I get back to the office. But it doesnt really look like thats possible yet with polaris corrupting so many files. And if Im going to type out my nights, I have an amazing Lenovo Thinkpad X100e that blows any tablet out of the water for keyboard entry. I was really hoping for stylus support, but the apps just arent here yet, Ill look again on Jelly Bean update, seems like this stylus computer dream has been in waiting for sooo long.
Incidentally my 2 year old daughter really loves the tablet. shes been the one reason I've been wanting to keep it, all the touch games, shes been doing puzzles and books and learning her letters with it, quite amazing. Now I just have to decide what to get her, Nexus is pretty cheap, or there might be some used ipads kicking around with better app support (might as well get a toy to be used as a toy after all).
Samsung made an awesome piece of hardware here, all the talk about it feeling cheap is wrong, its slick, fast, small, light and just awesome to hold. Just wish it had some better app support. Soon hopefully.
Get 7Notes with mazec. It's an HWR keyboard you Can use almost everywhere.
Here's the thing MS has for years worked real hard to keep their office suite and word processing software proprietary and have been quite sucsessful at this. So any time you try to use a system that is not controled by MS with MS software you will find this problem to some extent. Whether it is a tablet, laptop or desktop. This is one of the reasons I refuse to use MS products, but that is me. What all this means to you is until you find a MS compatible tablet running MS software that MS has said is compatible with their office suite you will have these problems. On top of that there is (as yet) no evidence that a Windows tablet will be 100% compatible with all Windows software. In fact there are reports that there will be programs that would run on Win 7 that are not expected to run on Win 8.
My question to you is do you want the features of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.0 or do you want to give up those features and hope a MS Windows machine will fulfill your needs without compromises? I personally have never seen an OS or a computing device that did not have compromises.
Think I read last night Microsoft are releasing office for android soon.

It's coming...just like a lot of their Xbox live features made their way to the iOS ecosystem. Of course they denied their slip, it is just a few weeks until their new tablets become available. I am sure a big selling point of Surface and other Win 8 tabs will be the availability of MS Office products, if they did not deny the rumors; those who were going to switch from iOS and Android because of Office would have just stayed with their current devices instead of dropping $$$ on MS's new Hardware. MS is smart, they know they can penetrate other ecosystems with their products. They will just wait until the hype surrounding Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT dies down so that they can capitalize on hardware sales out of the gate.
Having said that, I dropped my PC and have moved on to just using the GN10.1. I am a freelance journalist, and I do all of my writing on the tablet. Polaris is good, but Office Suite Pro 6 is excellent. I have zero problems creating and editing pieces in .doc format. It just works.
Its back and I already miss it! lol
The microsoft atoms should be able to fill what I need, but I suspect they'll have their own problems. Still, samsungs making one with a keyboard dock and s-pen. Might be enticing.
The other office programs worked better, but they didnt have the ability to free draw on top of the document like polaris has. I want a tablet because in my many meetings, when someone is commenting or we are discussing a plan, I want to quickly mark it up. I can go back to my top to do the real work, but the thoughts I'd like to write, directly on the document in question. I can't do that in snote because my pc cant modify snote. And if I have to type it I'll just bring my netbook. Has anyone found an office program that works well with an ability to free draw? I bought a few last night but couldnt find one.
I may get a note 10.1 again in a couple months, who knows the app I need might be in development
