XDA Management

I have owned an O2 XDA for a while and I currently use an XDA II (Himalaya). I have now found myself supporting 8 XDA IIs devices and 15 XDA IIi devices, in addition to 6 Blackberries.
We are currently running Blackberry Enterprise Server and although I do not like the software or the devices very much I can't deny their impressive features. For the XDA devices we have a contract with O2 and provide wireless Active Sync and OMA using MS Exchange over both WiFi and GPRS, however management for the devices is a bit lacking. I am forever setting up devices for users who have hard re-set their devices or let them go flat.
With the Blackberrys the BES software can manage the fleet of devices, push software to them, define policy etc.
My question is, has anyone else used software that can manage PDA devices in an organization. I have been reading about MS System Management Server and its Device Management Feature Pack. Has anyone used this, is it any good, reliable etc.
I have looked into Blackberry software for the PDA's and it seems possible, but I would rather integrate with active directory and group policy if I can.
Also what are the possibilities of cooking ROMs and deploying them, such as getting rid of that damn O2 software and installing the GPRS monitor? While I am at it can I automatically collect log files in any way, such as the GPRS software or Active Sync errors (coz I get that allot of them). It would beet setting up all this stuff by hand. I will go ahead and give this a try anyway I think but I would be interested in talking to any one that has done this before.
In return I have noticed that there is not much information here on these subjects, and I would be happy to share my experiences in this area if it is needed.
Thanks for the advice.
I think you scared everyone off. What a scary thought, having to support that many devices. Just one is enough of a pain for most on here!
Well I have managed to configure the ExtROM of the blueangle deviced, and i am happy to say that my users can now take there xda IIs devices on the road, if they go flat, or hard reset, all is ok. I installed the demo version of Microsoft SMS server on my test network at home and i love it. Using this I created cab files that configured activesync, GPRS, VPN and browser settings that now mean my users only need to set the time, and put in the username and password and the hole thing is up and running, GPRS sync and all (my boss is very happy). All I need to do now is convince them to buy the software.
I am looking in to useing WMI to collect device information, and perhaps a .NET app to gather loggs etc.
Thanks for all your help. I could not have done this without this forum, cooking up my ExtROM and geting rid of the O2 software and even puting on a company splash screen are all very cool. (oh and i upgraded my xda 2 to 2005 while i was at it )
Some thougts
a cab to configure WiFi ? (registery patch?)
will the XDA IIi be as easy?
could i install tom tom useing the ExtROM ? to many prompts ?
and my origanl plee for help stands,
thanks again guys

A bit more exacly informations please! Is your server configured with a Certificate? (IIS changed to HTTPS only?)
And search the forum, here are already many threads about that.

I got lost on the certification part... sorry. I had a good friend help me set t up.
You know, the search function of the forum is a powerfull tool.
If you used it, you'd figure out there are a lot of threads already about this.
Here's one for you to start with.

On page 2 there is a link to a site that contains a word document on howto set it up. Try that first.
I have it working but not 100%.

TyTN "forgets" personal certificate

I try to get my mails pushed to my TyTN. Thus I enabled the appropriate services on my Exchange 2003 SP2 server, set the user permissioning and so on. I generated an P12 cert with my CA and imported it using p12import.exe on my tytn. I also installed .cer for the domain and for the CA on the mobile device. Thus I was able to sync and push. Now I am facing the following issue:
After successfully syncronizing and pushing for some hours, I regularely get an 0x85030027. Checking my certificate I can see that my p12 is gone. After reimporting it using p12import, i can change the server settings the following way to force an "reinitialisation" of the link between user settings and cert: I delete the "m" in "blabla.dynaccess.com", go forward to login information - the password is gone then - go back to the server, add the "m", go forward adding the password. Sometimes I am than able to sync again, sometimes I get an 0x85010004. In the latter case I must delete the whole server setting - loosing all my mails - and have set it once again.
Dealing with this issue now for several days and beeing unable to find any description or solution in this forum and the web, I kindly ask for any idea which could be considered beeing helpful...
PS.: Sorry for my English - it is not my native tongue ;-)
I use CACert certificate for my email and have imported it using smartphoneaddcert utiltity from Micro$oft.
Copy your certificate into \Storage\root.cer (has to be named like this) and run SPAddCert.exe, hopefully that should work
thanks for the immediate answer. i already installed my root-certificate with no probs. The issue I have is related to the individual cert for the device, generated and signed by my ca, which is trusted by the tytn. This individual one disappears after some syncs?!
I don't experience the same problem ...
I think your method is ok (Jacco in DDSL.NL) have a nice tools to import personal certificate to device...

Cheers
André
Now I can describe the problem more precise: the personal certificate disappears after every soft reset?!
I have the exact same problem !!!!
When you do a soft reset the personal Certificate disappears.
I can reimport it directly, but I need to hook it up to a PC in order to validate the Certificate.
Is there no other way. This is really annoying when i'm on a trip, and I have to soft reset the device.
Does anyone know hpw this can be done differently.
Thanks
Micman

Cingular 8125 WM6 Exchange Server Issues - Can't connect since upgrading from WM5

Hey all,
I have been running the PDAViet 4.0 version of the WM6 rom for our wizards. I must say that so far it seems loads better than most of the roms I have tried on it (and I have tried most of them )
Before, I had no issues with getting push email from my exchange server at work. Now after upgrading to WM6, I can't seem to connect for the life of me. When I connect, I get a "Support code: 0x80072F06" error. Now instead of being a total tool and just asking you smarties to solve my question without any leg work on my part, I researched this error code and it seems to be a certificate error. I have entered my exchange server info the EXACT way as before.
I even exported the certificate from IE, and imported it into my 8125. Same error. I then also downloaded the SSLChainSaver app, extracted the certificates from my exchange server, made it into a .cab file, imported it...nothing.
So, that being said, do you think that this is some sort of a WM6 issue? I would really hate to go back to WM5 at this point.
I saw somewhere that you could disable the OS from checking for a SSL certificate by doing a registry change, but when navigating to HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Activesync/Partners/UID blah blah <-- that last part isn't in there, so I can't insert a value to disable it... Please help!!!!!
The only other issue I have seen at this point with the WM6 rom is that the keyboard is jacked up...my dot characters aren't right at all...however the numbers and letters are fine.
Thank you so much for any help you can provide. I have been lurking on the site since the 8125 came out, and I must say I have learned a great deal from this community. Thanks!

M$ needs to patch exchange 2007 for it to work (if I am recalling the other post correctly).
--M
(search is your friend)
In other words, if you want to use Push email you can't use WM6?

Are you running Exchange 2003 at work? I'm still on 2003 and have never had a problem, whether with WM5 or WM6. I DO, however, ALWAYS configure my AS on the device initially. (If I use the PC I don't get my tasks) ... Plus it's just easier for me.
If the certificate worked with WM5 it'll work with WM6.
Is there an easy way to figure it out without asking anyone? I work for an IT company that runs all of m$'s latest stuff as far as I can tell. I would imagine they are at least 03. It worked just fine all day, and I know lots of people connected right now with WM5. It just seems to be picky with WM6 for some reason.
I am also running Vista on my work machine. There is no activesync. Now it is win mobile device center, and it doesn't feel the same at all. I haven't gotten it to sync with my phone on bluetooth yet. You can't specify com ports in the tool at all, just bluetooth. Oh well, keep reading I guess
It was the ROM...
I switched to the Underground Rom and everything seems to be working fine now. I wouldn't advise anyone with an 8125 to use the PDAViet 4.0 rom, this one, however, works great.
SSL
You are right. I Disabled SSL and Direct push worked for me
You're lucky! I couldn't even get it to work by doing that...

Teething problems

Hi first let me congratulate you on this amazing forum, there really is a wealth on information here. I am new to here and have a problem I was hoping could help me out with.
I am trying to sync my HD2 to my companies OWA site. Something which is so easy on the iphone, but seems extremely difficult on the HD2. I think that in order for the exchange server to allow me to synchronize i need to have the relevant security certificate installed on my phone.
I got the certificate from visiting my owa site (http://owa.company.com). I have transfered it over to my phone and clicked on it. I get an error message. Can you let me know how i can install / link the certificate to my outlook connection please.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
