Setting up wifi on MDA - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I just received my MDA Friday and have not figured out how to link to my home network (Linksys WRT54G). On the router I have WPA-Personal TKIP encryption, MAC filtering, and have added the MDA's MAC address to the list.
Could someone provide a step-by-step on setting this up? The manual has absolutely nothing, and I can't even find any encryption settings in the MDA's wifi setup.

Nobody knows how to set up wifi on the MDA?

I have a Qtek 9100 connecting to a WRT54G and you really should'nt have to do anything special to make it work; but there is one thing I can think of though:
Is the wireless mode on your WRT54G set to 'G-only'? If so you will need to either set the mode to 'Mixed' or apply the 'G registry hack' described elsewhere in the forum to the MDA.
And maybe one more thing:
Have you disabled SSID Broadcast on the WRT54G? If that is the case the MDA can obviously not find the router.

Thanks, Its, for your reply. I originally had the router set to "G only," then changed it to "Mixed," and have also done the MDA registry hack.
SSID Broadcast is disabled on the router, but I was hoping to plug in an IP address or something to point it in the right direction. I have a wifi module for my Nikon D2X camera that finds the router, as does my notebook computer, so I'm sure there's a way. I see no way to assign a security protocol on the MDA, and I'm sure that needs to be done. WPA-Personal (TKIP) is enabled on the router.
Hopefully I can get it talking to the router without compromising security. As I mentioned before, I've entered the MDA's MAC address in the router's approved list, as I do have MAC filtering enabled.

Once the MDA has detected the router you can choose to connect to it, and at that point you can enter the security protocol and your network key.
And once you have made a successfull connection, you can actually disable the SSID Broadcast on the WRT54G again. The MDA will remember the SSID and the settings.

Problem fixed, that did it. After enabling SSID Broadcast it picked it up and after disabling again it had no trouble connecting thereafter. Thanks for the tip!

Universal and WPA - is it on the way ? Any rumours ?

Hi all !
As far as i can understand there is no WPA support on Universal.
Did anybody hear about the plans or is there any third-party software that provides WPA functionality on Universal ?
Regards.
Orange SPV M5000 flashed with JASJAR_WWE_11353_137_10402.
Baudy.
huh?
currently supported is WPA-PSK, WPA-TKIP and WPA-WEP...
If you meant WPA2 with AES: I dont know.
I had asked (much) the same question before buying my O2 EXEC and found the answer here
http://certifications.wi-fi.org/wbcs_certified_products.php?TID=2
Select High Tech Computer Corp (HTC) and Submit and you'll see the Exec listed as (if I remember correctly) PU10. It claims to have
WPA™ - Personal
WPA™ - Enterprise
EAP-TLS

How to achieve it ? I can see ONLY LEAP in my wireless config.
Can you help ? Did you try ?
can anyone help with this issue?
I am not sure as to how to proceed (and my obvious insufficient knowledge of wireless networks is not helping...).
I am currently using WEP, so my educated guess is that if I set WPA on my router I will be automatically prompted to sign-in with my WPA encrypted password.
Can I have confirmation of this; and also - do I need to enable/disable any setting on my xdaExec before I attempt to connect my device using WPA.
I use WPA-TKIP
I use WPA-TKIP with my JasJar. Not sure exactly how I set it up, but can't remember that I struggeled with it.
Believe I just setup WPA on 3Com router and when JasJar connected I was aksed to enter the code/passkey, and then it worked. ...possible I did some changes on JasJar setup also...?
Actually I had some more problems due to that I also use MAC filthering on the router, and if I added my JasJar's MAC AFTER setting up WPA, it did not work, and I had to remove from JasJar and reconnect again, type passkey, and then it worked. ...but if you don't use MAC filthering, this will not be an issue.
If you struggle with it, I can remove and add it again when I get home, and note down the steps.
Thanks mrGydar :!:
I appreciate your effort.
Before you re-configure your setup - I'll attempt to alter my setup to WPA and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out within a day - I'll let you know!
OK
Just for info, settings on my JasJar is right now in settings for my homenetwork:
Authentications: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption: Passkey
Best of luck, and if U struggle, let me know, and I'll write down the steps.

Don't speak too loudly. I don't want my o2 Exc to discover it's been doing something it shouldn't for the last 6-weeks.
However, I have my Exec configured for my own and four different client's networks using WPA-PSK, TKIP and MAC-filtering, so it definately *does* work. I have the habit of presetting the connection settings since my key is 27-alphanumeric characters and it's a pain typing that in blind.
There is something strange depending upon which way you go about the configuration. On a few occasions, I've clicked the Authentication dropdown arrow to find only Open or Shared options listed - no WPA or WPA-PSK in sight. I've then turned the wireless off/on, sometimes reset, or just gone back into the configuration screen a different way and the options were back again.
It's usually happened when I've been rebuilding the system after an enforced hard reset, so I've never been in the mood to track the problem further - too busy trying not to smash the damn thing against the wall!
correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't WPA security for 802.11g and up.
This model supports 802.11b only so it will not do WPA.
afaik this would mean WEP is the only option.

Don't think so. I have a couple of clients with laptops only capable of 11b and they connect at 11b to multi-speed wireless/ADSL-routers using WPA-PSK without problems. Probably depends upon the age of the router device's firm- and hard-ware. Think one of my earlier ZyXEL models had only WEP when it arrived, but then a firmware update added WPA.
People
I am happy to say - I have just checked it out and it works :!: :!:
Earlier I reconfigured my router from WEP to WPA, and a few minutes ago I switched the wifi-ON, on my Exec - it just located my home network and asked for it's WPA catchphrase (password);
I didn't have to configure anything else. Just to be certain I used the internet explorer to surf a bit - and it did so with no problems whatsoever!

I must admit I had trouble finding out where you configure the wireless adapter in the Universal... But there's no worry because WPA and everything else can be configured here...!
Firstly ensure that the wireless adapter is switched on in the Wireless Manager... FN + -> key,
Once this has done, the wireless adpater will scan for networks in range. At this point some users will be prompted for the WPA key as mentioned in previous posts (this didn't work for me).
However, if you go to Start... Settings... Connections... Network Cards now, there will be a Configure Wireless Networks tab (wireless tab)... Here you can click Add New to enter the Network Name, and specify the WPA key via the "Network Key" tab.
Hope this helps some new users of the Universal!

VARIO Wifi Access points that Do or Dont Work!

Im looking to get the Wifi working on my Vario at home. My current Access point wont connect due to T-mobile's lock out of the 802.11g.
So I can get a Access point that works, I thought it would be helpful to post up your Model with a Yes or No after you have tried all the different settings as posted on the forum e.g. different channels and mixed mode etc.
This is for g Locked Varios only please not ones with flashed ROMs.
Please keep it simple Model YES or NO.
Thanks
To Start us off......
Inexq HR054g Access point (NO)
if your Wizard has b only (ROM issue, not hardware) then ANY router which is set to allow g only will fail to connect. yours "should" allow "b" devices to connect http://www.inexq.com/web1/images/product/spec/hr054g.htm
So maybe you have a setting that is allowing "g" only

Have you got MAC address filtering enabled on your router and forgotten....I did.
Also try changing WLan card settings on your XDA from Best battery to best performance..Make a lot of difference. and many have found theirs connects after this
All turned off any other options
I have a BT2100 wireless router and mini-s, sometimes it won't connect until I stop active sync running on the mini-s ???
3-Com OfficeConnect ADSL Firewall Wireless 11g Router (set to mixed)
Vario will only connect when router set to open access i.e. security disabled. Any other setting i.e. WAP, WEP causes the routers internal DHCP server to fail to send an IP address back to the Vario... or the Vario being unable to acknowledge the router?
Have got a couple more routers comming my way, will post them up when Ive had a chance to test them

I've seen this issue detailed elsewhere but I can't remember exactly where - apparently for some reason the 3com sends back an IP v6 address when security is enabled, which the Wizard can't use.
So far I've used a cheapie Origo wireless router (conexant chipset) and a Netgear D834G (in mixed mode), my Wizard seems happy with both.

WiFi

Could someone please help? I;ve got a spectec wifi card, WM5 driver. I get the antenna symbol, but no bars or signal strength. I 'configure' the wlan 11b network adapter for server assigned IP address AND connection to 'the internet' but no joy. Is there something at the router end i need to do?
What device are you using? why the WM5 driver? Is that driver also backwards compatible with WM2003?
Its the compact II, hence wm5. The spectec wlan card is backwards compatible with wm2003, but drivers are specific to the os (at least that's my understanding) Well, when i tap on IE i just get 'connecting' and that's it. Any ideas? Spectec don;t seem to be responding...i don;t know if its a driver issue or what...

You'll get the answers in the correct forum. Just go to the link above.
Mda Compact II, htc-charmer,etc,etc..but what's in a name? Man, this is the right place ?!?
my mistake....keep forgetting that there is a Charmer out there
There isn't an official forum for the Charmer as yet in this site....what is your router brand? Can the WLAN detect the SSID of your router? Is the SSID broadcast in your router switched on?
First thing is that your Wi-Fi must be able to detect that there is an access point nearby and should at least pick up the SSID of your network.

You'd be better off using the DHCP to "ON" on your wifi server. But if you manually configure it to use your own IPs, you also need to manually configure the IP settings on your Handheld. I cant tell specific details of how to do it on your handheld because i dont use spectec wifi card. But you should be able to look at its settings and tweak it.
Also make sure, as O2mininoob above said that your SSID must be Broadcast. Also make sure that MAC address filtering is OFF, otherwise you also have to manually input your handheld's MAC address.
Let me just add, i'm running apple-mac wireless networking - does that really matter? I can access wireless via non-Mac laptops - a second point, the spectec wlan utility on the mda won't open even after reinstalling.
Ok, I;ve disabled all restrictions on wireless clients on the base station -
But i;m not sure what SSID is, nor can i find anything about broadcasting under the settings.
P.S But there's one thing i don't get which might be of some significance (or probably not!)
1. Under the 'internet' tab on the PC (not the mda) which deals with TCP/IP settings, i'm showing one IP address which is teh same as the router address.
2. Under the 'network' tab (which deals with how the base-station's internet connection is shared with other computers) I'm sharing a single IP address using dhcp which is different from the above IP and router address.
Does the difference between 1 & 2 mean anything? Three laptops in the place are connecting without problems.
Well, thanks for any light on the matter
Sorry i dont know anything about apple-mac networking, but, if your other computers can connect to your router, then theres no problem with your router...
the problem might be with the way you connect your handheld to your router...
you configure your handheld the way you configured your computers to connect to your router.
about SSID> on your hanheld, if you perform a search for wireless network, can it find your wireless network name? (example> ''Belkin Wireless'' or ''Netgear'').
if your handheld fiinds it, then dont worry with SSID as im sure it is being broadcast.
also, make sure that wireless mode is set to both 802.11b and g.
My Spectec card came with drivers and a WLAN Utility program. When you run this program, it usually displays the SSID with the strongest signal. Do you have it installed in your PPC? What does it say when you run it?
Also, go to Settings -> Connections -> Network cards. If your Spectec driver was installed correctly, you'll have a window displaying all the SSID's that the card has detected. Tap and hold on your router's SSID and tap connect.
HTH. Good luck.
Spectec tells me that the wlan utility is incompatible with WM5. And i;m not getting a list of any SSID's. I've pretty much given up! Cheers for the feedback.
There's a WM2005 Spectec Driver here. Maybe you can try downloading this one, un-install the one in your PPC and install the new one.
Good luck.

Wizard and Belkin Pre-N: Incompatible?

I have a new Wizard (O2 XDA Mini S) which refuses to connect to my Belkin Pre-N router.
Despite trying all I can think of, including Encrypt On/Off; WEP, WPA; b/g mixed access; changing Channel and SSID, reset to defaults etc, etc I still get no joy.
I even suspected a hardware fault with the Mini, so had it changed, but the new one is the same.
When I start WiFi, the Mini finds the Router, and requests the WPA key. Once supplied, it just goes back to "Available" in the list of connections; forcing a "connect" shows it trying to connect, but it just returs to "Availabe" again. The network properties shows no connection (no SSID or Channel) and no signal strength.
All my other WiFi clients connect fine- O2 XDA Exec, Toshiba Laptop and another PC client. Even my old Ipaq with jacket connects, so its not a b/g problem.
I've even tried using the 802.11g registry hack cited in another thread to no avail.
The Mini did connect to a BT Openzone Access point this morning, so the capability is there.
Connection settings for the connection are for "The Internet" and the overall network card settings (above the Network adapter list) to "Work", though I did try this with "The Internet" out of frustration.
Any ideas guys?
Neil

Thanks for the advice, but I tried it without the hack first- no go, and have now done a hard reset (I've done so many hard resets I've lost count!)
Everything I try fails. Just about to try the firmware update for the Router.
Sorted- the router firmware update fixed it!

So you are saying that the router was the one causing the issues, you think, and not the Wizard (MDA)? I have the same issue. Have the hack (g) installed. I was only able to connect once to the my Belkin pre-n...but for some reason cannot get an IP address...ever...
I think it was a combination of the 2 things:
The G HAck on its own did not work, and the firmware update on its own didn't work, but updating the firmware, and using the G hack allowed my Wizard (O2 Mini S ) to connect and it has been fine since.
In fact I've now applied the "Linksys Hack" to my Pre-N Router, so it now thinks its a Linksys and is much more stable generally. If you try it, make sure you reset the Belkin to factory settings before applying the hacked Linksys firmware. Read the relevant forum entries carefully!
yeah. I did the linksys hack as well. I must say that I'm happy about that. it went really well. didn't need to do the factory reset and I only had issues with my dhcp range. but I fixed that.
still no love with the wizard though. do I need to set up a separate connection setting on my wizard? do I have to turn off the phone and the enable wifi? I also have the hack were I have gprs always on....could that be conflicting?
TIA.
The Wizard does seem to have more connecton problems than the Exec (I've had both) as its WiFi hardware is less advanced (based on an older SDIO design rather than fully integrated)
You should not need to turn the phone radio or GPRS off when connecting WiFi, though it might help troubleshooting if you do for establishing the initial connection.
I assume you are using WPA encryption? WEP is a royal pain on WM devices as you have to enter the full 26 character hex encryption key in the WiFi settings control panel- WM2003 and WM5 won't accept WEP passphrases.
If you are using WPA, I'd suggest removing the connection settings for your router on the Wizard, then turning WiFi on again and allowing it to try & connect. If that fails, you need to recheck your network settings.
If you are still having problems, you might like to look at my answer to a simiar query on 4WinMobile Here which worked for that user.
Thanks NeilM. I do have the old school WEP. It IS a pain entering in the Hex string (grumble). I need to check to see if my networked-tivo's can handle WPA...
I will check your other post as well.
Read through your other post. I think it was a "dumb" thing that I did. I changed the "connect to" item on the wireless card from "The Internet" to "Work" and it picked up an IP immediately. Duh...that would make sense if both my GRPS connection and my wifi were going to "the internet"...and thus conflicting, right?
My knowledge of Networking protocols etc is sadly lacking, so I don't know the answer to why this is how things need to be! I suspect all the network cards need to be connected to "Work" because the device has no direct link to "The Internet", and once connected via "Work", the TCP/IP settings take over and route packet calls to "The Internet" via the IP address settings.
Most important thing is that you are now connected!
Hope you can find time to visit 4WinMobile more often now you've found it. It's not intended to be as technically upfront as XDA-Devs, but is a very good inter-personal site with a great spirit, and some pretty good insider knowledge
Belkin pre-n
My MDA Vario would not connect with the original Rom. I was hoping this ROM update (CUSTOM_RUU_Prodigy_2170702_217_20710_TMO_US.exe) found here forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44631&highlight=mda+vario would allow it to connect but it will still not. I used registry wizard to update the registry settings for Wifi G, but it still will not connect successfully. It seems some roms will work with the Belkin Pre-n. Does any one know which specific rom works with this particular router.
I'm getting desperate here- I can't get my MDA to connect to my Belkin Pre-N. Nothing works. I've got the latest firmware on the router, and I've enabled the "G" hack on the phone.
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried removing all encryption and security and still nothing. I can easily connect to my old Dell TruMobile router, but I don't want to use it because the range is so poor.
Is there anyway to ensure 100% that I've enabled the G hack?
Belkin Pre-n
I finally have my Belkin Pre-n (or linksys SRX clone now) working with my MDA Vario. It would not work with any Belkin firmware or variety of settings, but since its harware is the same as the Linksys SRX you are able to flash the unit to a Linksys clone. As a Linksys clone the Mda Vario connects flawlessly with no trouble. The first Belkin Pre-n I flashed to a linksys bricked the router, so be careful with this. To successfully reflash you must have a version 1 Belkin pre-n not v2 a hex edited version of linksys firmware found here http://www.streamload.com/Nodes/Node.asp?cxInstID=86340166&nodeID=672194467
IMPORTANT Have the Belkin pre-flash set to the default linksys IP 192.168.1.1, the default password 'admin', and the dhcp server turned off. These are the default settings for the linksys firmware and and if they are pre -set result in a easy flash. If these settings are not followed pre-flash you stand to brick your router, or have a difficult time ressurecting it. You must manually assign your computer an IP within the 192.168.1.1 -255 feild as you will have dhcp turned off. at the fierst login dont be alarmed it will not work. Restart your browser and type 'admin' in the username as well as in the password field. Now you can upgrade your router to the newest linksys firmware 1.02.10_USA found on the linksys website. Congratulations you now will enjoy flawless wifi on your linksys flashed Belkin pre-n.

unable to connect to WLAN

Hi!
I do have problem to connect the device (o2 xda mini S) to WLAN. It recognizes the network, asks for the WPA-PSK key and then attempts to connect - but fails.
If I configure the device with a static IP this IP shows up during the
connection process after a while but the device isn't connected anyway.
If I use DHCP I get no IP ever.
I also tried a very simple 8 alphanum character key.
What may be wrong here?
I hope you get an answer soon, because I have the same problem. Enter the key, then no connect. I also tried it with security turned off on the router, no connect. This thing connected every time before 2.26 ROM update.
bump - having the same issue
bump
Hope there's a reply; having the same issue but I think it's router specific too. I am on Dlink DI-614+ and a friend of mine who has DI-524 (i think) has no problem connecting reconnecting.
if you figure out a way to get it to work, please PM me... I have not figured out this problem yet.
I might try to disable all of my router settings (WEP).. but that would only mess my already configured other devices up.
Stupid question, but is it a B/G router or is it configured to only do one of them ?
Well, I got it to work by disabling encryption and leaving the AP all open...
So, apparently the software has some WPA-PSK-related bugs
Same thing with 2.24a Mr.Clean. Open AP works fine, and any encryption messes the whole thing up. The connection is done, it even gets the IP - and continues to blink arrows and no data comes through.
Windows Mobile only knows TKIP but as I was using AES and wanted to continue using AES on the other machines I configured the router to provide "TKIP and AES". Well, this didn't work but TKIP only actually works now.
I've been having the same problems, could connect to unsecured networks, no problems. The thing would just refuse to connect to my home WLAN (Belkin 54G set to B/G), secured with WPA-PSK and TKIP data encryption. However, just updated the router's firmware from the Belkin website, and BINGO!!!! It found the router, I entered the key and immediately connected, fast too. Just try updating the firmware of your router!
I agree on the router upgrades. And some routers are just crap, sorry to say. I've had bad luck with Belkins and Netgears. Linksys and D-Link typically give me much less problems. You also need to make sure that you installed the registry settings to enable G networks on you device (of course)
I have a Sonicwall using WPA-PSK with no problems.
I personally like molski's tweaks to make the necessary registry settings on my device ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=58438
Hope I was of some help.
