3G should be the same only difference is universal connecting differently
try the search before asking questions next time...

Yes.
As a rule of thumb, if it has 2 cameras it is 3G.
You can go to your carrier's website and search for the settings, Orange UK drop 3 lots of internet settings into the m5000 with the extended ROM:
Dial up WAP
WAP GPRS
Internet GPRS
The Universal will automatically pick one to use apparently but not having used this feature I don't know the situations where one would be preferable to another.

Not entirely true. Advance TC M.A.G.I.C. (http://www.advancetc.com/) has 2 cams, and no 3G

Universal with HSDPA?

Thinking on getting an MDA pro with T-Mobile in the UK with the walk n web unlimited internet, only catch is that it is UMTS. With the news that T-Mobile are upgrading the network to HSDPA wondering if there is a HSDPA universal due to be released anytime soon? If not, the other option is to wait for the Hermes in June.
The UMTS Notebook Cards can be upgrade to HSDPA with a new firmware, but i think the Universal haven't the necesary hardware for that. Wait for the Hermes...
Forgive the ignorance but what exactly is HSDPA?

Thanks lutzs, only prob I have with the hermes is the small screen 320x240.. the small screen is big minus Im not looking to use it as a phone, but more for PDA and internet access... also plan to use it as a gateway (over bluetooth) for my mac to get to the net... thought about the pcmcia card, but need to lug laptop everywhere for that, whereas the pda itself is much more portable...
i think the tradeoff of speed over the usablility (screen, keyboard etc) might just be worth it for my needs...
another question, has anyone used t-mobile uk's web n walk with the above scenario of using it as a bridge for internet access for a laptop? the small print says that you can't do that blah blah... but don't see how that can tell if you're browsing through the pda or your computer? http is http...?
haven't used tmobile, but the universal can be used as a modem. Via bluetooth should be fine (*99# etc.)
HSDPA is not part of the universal chipset. however I wouldn't get too excited. Mobile cells have to share bandwidth so the chance of anything fast is unlikely. Put it this way, by the time we actually get 384k sustained on any 3G network, that should be fine for web & email & online games.
I had an o2 xda mini s. but i gave it back. 320x240 is very limtied, adding that to the dismal 196 mhz omap was not usable.

Skype on mini!

Hello people,
Have anyone used Skype on mini? Mini doesn't have 3G and skype requires it i think. Have you tried? Which version did you download from?
Regards
Carty..
Skype does not require 3g. It works with wifi or BT. I don't have a wifi card but I've already played around with BT and is quitke good.
Hi,
Fine, let me try with gprs. Which version of skype is compatible with mini, can you please give me the link.
Thanx in advance.
Regards
Carty..
Skype
I tryed skipe with gprs and it works quite good! the quality is not the best but i cud understand my skipe contact... skype out was also quite good
Which version did you use? i couldn't find a version specific for mini. Only other devices like Dell, imate were there.
Thanx.
Regards
Carty..
I only tried it with their beta version. I uninstalled it because I don't have and don't want to buy a wifi card since soon I'll be replacing my S100.
i used the version for high speed cpus! you can download it from here:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/download.html
I only tested it with gprs
Thanx you guys!

Sorry to say that but that's bull****. Skype runs well via WiFi or 3G. GPRS only offers 56kbps, that is by far not enough bandiwth for voice. You can chat via GPRS, but no voice.

That's true. Even If U'll switch to 4downling and 1 uplink U can barelly undestand your partner and with 1 uplink he will understand nothing. For skype U need at last 5 kB uplink and 5 kB downling - its impossible to get with GPRS.
You guys might need to get updated! Skype works well with my poor gprs connection even for voice! My gprs gives a transfer rate of an average 3kbps. The quality of the voice is like telephone clearity! I just used it for skype-out, a call to a land line number!

@Carty: That's absolute bull****.
It doesn't even work smooth with bluetooth ~30kb/s.

Get real! Magician offers 2 GPRS modes: 3-2 and 4-1 (where 4-1 means that 4 of 5 slots avaiable are used for download and 1 slot for upload. For skype U need 5 kB uplink and 5 kB downlink and there's no way to get it with 4-1 where U have max 4kB downlink (u should barelly undestand UR partner) and 1kB (sic!) uplink (theres no way that U will be understood). 3kB down and 2kB up in 3-2 GPRS mode is pretty useless too...
Point is that Skype need much more bandwidth than standard VoIP software so U can try one of many other VoiP communicators and U may be succesfull.
^ Um, that isn't the correct way to gague your GPRS ability - 1 slot != 1kB. If you're getting only like 3-5kB, it's because of reception or operator restrictions, NOT slot limit:

Turn off Edge, force GPRS

Is it any software, hacks or possible to make a program where user can force the device to use GPRS instead of EDGE on Windows Mobile ?

No it can't - only GSM/GPRS/EDGE vs UMTS/3G (I think)
Any reason you would want to do this?
Hi Knocksock!
Did you find a way to handle this?

A person is using a phone and software (well, it could be just a web-page) which connects to internet. He says GPRS is faster than EDGE due to bad signals when EDGE is used. Thats what they say, so I thought I should help out on this

No, I haven't Any ideas ?
Not really, I´ve been looking for it quite a while but I´m sure there must be a registry entry that links to the EDGE interface. My problem is that the device iPaq 6915 stopps data transfer when connected to EDGE.

CLEAR is WIMAX not WIFI, different protocol, different radios. You would need a WIMAX receiver.

[Q] 2G / 3G switch???

Hi,
I just got myself a Omnia 7 and since I live in area where 3G signal is very low, phone constantly searching for 3G and also keep switching from 3G to 2G.
Needless to say that kills battery life and also have influence on drop calls and call quality.
Anyway, I don't need 3G when I'm at home. I use wireless for internet and mail.
Funny thing, Omnia 7 doesn't have 3G switch like some other WP7 phones.
Is there any other solution to switch off 3G??
I tried MarketPlace and didn't found nothing!
Any registry tweak or something??
Maybe firmware with that option.
Hey,
If you go into settings->mobile network and scroll down you can turn off 3g with the slider
Geee... If only that exist on Omnia 7.
There is no such switch.
I tried Samsung tools
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924497
That does show switch for 3G, but still does nothing.... 3G is still on.

Some ROMs have the switch enabled by default (i.e. the t-mobile ones) some others do not.
What you have mentioned is interesting. If the switch is not working for you then please mention your concerns in the "Samsungs Tools" post and the creator might be able to fix the issue.
This would also help other people in the future!
An alternative way to switch on 2g is to follow the method Niiceg suggested.
