A friend of mine wants to buy this phone. He has a 3G SIM card.
Will it work in the Prophet?
It will work but he will not get 3G data perfomance.

Are you sure about that?
I tried the SIM in mine and got the "invalid or missing SIM" message.
Is the phone unlocked?
Unless I am mistaken it should work someone please chime in if I am wrong or can provide additional information
I chucked my Orange UK Contract sim in and it worked immediately in my JAMin. Of course I get no 3G, but I do get EDGE, GPRS, Voice all as expected.

Some? Not all? Which ones?
if your 3 sim says "GEMPLUS" printed in small lettering on the Gold contacts side, it will work in a lot of non 3 phones, and almost all HTC phones.
If you dont see GEMPLUS, that means its a UMTS only sim (USIM), and you will get the "Invalid SIM" or "Insert correct SIM" message.

Hi Folks
Does anyone have a soft copy of the handbook for the Universal they could post or mail me? Love to have a read.
Also, for the 3G calling, does it use a sim or usim?

3G traffic (be it data or video) always require a USIM. If you don't have any, you cannot get onto the 3G network. I'm actually having this issue, as I travel to the UK a lot, where T-mobile has a live 3G network. As I do not have a USIM (since T-Mobile NL doesn't offer 3G yet), I cannot roam onto their 3G network, only onto GPRS...
Bugger...
My operator (Telenor in Norway) enables the customers to use their OLD SIM cards and still have full 3G access!
My SIM card is from 2004, but customers may use cards that go back to July 2000 on the 3G network..
There has been some Over The Air updates, but these might be for something else..
The user only gets a SMS saying: "You SIM card has been updated, please reboot your phone."
So we can use the same SIM on a new and old phone, 3G or no 3G...

Not 100% what you're after, but hope that helps.

Well, I'm using a 4-year-old T-Mobile SIM in my JasJar, and I'm getting 3G access with absolutely no problems...
I didn't think there was such a thing as a USIM exactly? I got the impression that a "USIM" was just a normal 3v SIM card which has been enabled for use on the UMTS network. And that's done by pressing a button at T-Mobile 'Command Centre'...
'3' here in the UK make a big deal about USIM cards, and how you have to have one to use a 3G phone, but that only seems to apply to their handsets, because they put about 800 billion security locks on each of them. In my experience, Vodafone and T-Mobile don't require you to upgrade the actual SIM card at all, and I assume that Orange and O2 are the same.

Hmmm, you learn something new every day... It could be that one can indeed update the SIM to a USIM with a OTA update, I just hadn't heard about that before. I might put in a phonecall to T-Mobile...
Thanks for the heads-up!
I'd better just point out that my last post was entirely guesswork on my part, based on the fact that my old T-Mobile SIM, and my sister's (3-year?)old Vodafone SIM both work perfectly in 3G devices.
In my case, I never even told T-Mobile that I'd bought a 3G phone, the SIM just worked on 3G from the second I put it in, so no OTA upgrade needed? (Of course, maybe they gave us UK customer's an upgrade one night without telling us?!)
My sister got an official Vodafone upgrade to a 3G phone, so they may have done an OTA thingy at the time, but the actual physical card is the same...
Hi, I have a unlocked Wizard & my T-Mobile contract has just expired, I was just wondering if a 3G sim (3) would work in it as there are some cheap deals on that network? I wouldn't use it for video calls so thats not a problem.
im 99% sure they DONT! however maybe someone there can prove me wrong
I'm using a Cingular 3G SIM in my 8125 with no problems at all.

what our american brothers call a "3g" sim and what the network provider called "3" use are slightly different things.... a american 3g sim is simply a normal 128k provisioned with extra services I.e. data and video calling (this is the same way all the gsm uk networks work too) however with "3" being the first 3g only network in the world they choosed to use the next generation of sim card called a usim which don't work in lots of non 3g phones including the wizard. try googling the word "usim" to see wot I mean
Under 3's terms and conditions you are not allowed to use their sim in a 2.5g phone. If you do use one and it works, they will eventually block it and send you a new sim with a gentle reminder that you are in breach of Ts and Cs.
Cheers Chaps, 3 it isn't then!
My O2 UK 3G UMTS sim works perfectly in my Wizard. You just can`t really get the benefits from it (Faster GPRS/EDGE etc....).
I have an MDA that I would like to use on ATT's network, but I hear that they are only using 3G SIM cards now. This is not a 3G phone, so does anyone know if this would work? Would I need a new ROM, or would it "just work"?
Thanks for any and all help!
3G sim works on wizard
Bro-
I use AT&T and I can verify that the AT&T 3G sim works on a wizard...it works in my wizard!
I didn't have to do anything special. Hopefully you have a G3 so you can sim and super-cid unlock fairly easily.
P.S. Go Spurs Go! I do love Avery Johnson, though!
the 3G sim card might work, but getting 3G fast internet won't.
It works. I use a 3G sim as an emergency prepaid number and I make and receive calls/sms/mail/everything fine using EDGE. No different than using a standard SIM.
Has anyone managed to get there artemis working with a 3g sim card? ie.e the 3 network in the uk? www.three.co.uk? sometimes known as hutchinson 3g?

Not tried it, but UK O2 Orbits are not network locked, you can put any SIM in - although with it not being a 3G device, there seems little point in putting a Three SIM in as it will just drop back to whichever GSM network Three piggybacks on (O2 I think). I'v just bought a three sim for £1.25 on ebay, so I'll load it up and see what the coverage is like near me - I only get intermittent t-mobile in my place...
it used to be possible but then 3 started to locking their sims so they only worked in 3g phones
aha!
im not so fussed about the 3g coverage its more being able to use that sim card in the phone, whethe rit roams off of o2 or etc. i got my phoen unlocked (originally t-mobile compact 3) and its the only simcard that doessnt work - thats why im suspicios of this shop[ who says they can doo it for £50
please keep me updated as to how your simcard goes, and if anyone knows a way of doing this im all ears!
I recently bought a TMOUS HTC HD2 and unlocked it to use on my AT&T network. However after unlocking the phone and trying a few roms I still am unable to connect to my AT&T network. I did unlock the phone on the stock winmo rom. And when I say i cant connect to the network I don't mean internet or mms. Not a single network function works, that includes calling, texting, mms, and internet.
Any help would be very much appreciateed. :fingers-crossed:
got any other sim cards available to try? (unlocking unlocks to all networks)
SIM cards
Well I have some old Tmo cards that I have from my old Tmo account. And I have a few other AT&T cards that are activated. Currently I have used one of the Tmos cards and one of the AT&T cards but they both do the same thing. It is rather frustrating. Do you think I am not picking up any of the EDGE signal the phone needs to work?

no, its not that, edge is just a manipulation of the 2g network, there is no 'edge signal', there are only 2g or 3g networks (simplified, and not really accurate/true, but close enough for this purpose)

have you EVER seen it working? id be tempted to think it was broken / blocked.
No I did not check before. Isn't there a way to tell if it is blocked with the imei number or something. I hate to think I bought a bad phone. If it is blocked is there anything I can do?

not sure, sorry. I'd maybe give at&t / tmo a call, see if they can offer any advice based on the imei.
Thank you for your help. One more thing the siginal bar at the top shows I have no signal but it has an x over the bar indicator. (I'm running gingerbread sense) When I drag the top bar down it says no service. Would this happen with a blocked phone?
No clue, sorry,
