hi, I just bought an Atom Pure. I have a question and thanks in advance for help. When I listen to the MP3 using my headset, I can hear a popping noise in the background and it is very annoying. But after I softreset, the noise seems to go away. It will came back again if I use the phone and then listen to MP3.
I tried to hard-reset and the popping noise still there. Then, I went to the retailer to try out another Atom Pure English Version, the same "problem" is also on the second Pure Atom.
On May 2nd, I then phoned the O2 customer/technical support and report to them the problem. They responded to me as there has been no report of above mentioned problem by other users with ATom that has the 20060123 ROM. I will be talking to the manager of the O2 technical support tomorrow. I will update you all asap.
So far, the Atom is a good piece of hardware, in my mind, it is better than 818pro. However, the Atom software is the problem which O2 is working hard to update.
Do update us on whatever goes on with your Pure.
I am surprised O2 shipped this device with that ROM we are crying about
Hi, Ultra4 and the team out there...thanks for the support (at least spiritually !!)
Yes, I got the call back from the O2 tech supt mgr and he confirmed that the popping noise is a bug and he got quite a bit of complains from others as well on this. He confirmed that there will be a new ROM update in mid June to resolve this. I guess this is the 0414 version that everybody is "hot and heavy" on these days...but he will not confirm nor he doesn't suggest me downloading the "not for sale" version. Of course he has to say that due to beauracracy standpoint.
Anyway...this is what I have so far....but now, a "itchy" question from me to you'all .... should I take this product back to the retailer (bought 3 days ago) and exchange for another brand ? such as EtenM600, etc.. any thoughts/advise ? I love and have been using the O2 products all the way back from the XDA years...so, II, IIi, IIs, Mini....etc.. and now the disappointing Atom....the Ad say...Pure Atom...but I say...Pure Disappointment..
Whatever suits you
Well, if that "pop" sound gets under your skin then trade it in.
I used the Atom from the first day it was launched with more problems than just what you described. I stuck it out and with each ROM upgrade it got better. At least I know O2 is working on fixing this problem and continually releasing the updates.
now ... I wonder how long DOPOD has to wait just to get the STEREO bluetooth ... manufacturer not doing anything about upgrading firmware ?
I prefer a company that keeps improving and supporting their product.

Does anyone have an update from O2 on the availability of the ROM upgrade for BT profiles? It's been nearly 3 months that they've been saying "any day now ...."!
Hey, i know how you feel. Ive only had my XDA2 since the end of February and its driving me nuts waiting for a ROM update to fix the Bluetooth problems...
by the way, how do you know the ROM update WILL actually fix the Bluetooth in the XDA2 ? have you read it somewhere ? :?
Yes, you do have a point there :?
O2 backup and support for XDA is useless
O2 is haphazard at the least in its updates and general support for the XDA well at least in the Uk they are so dont hold your breath.
The new website for example is a nightmare for getting information out of and as for support on the phone they pass you to xda warranty repairs.
have you tried pocket bluetooth tools? (http://www.angeltowns.com/town/bluetooth/) i THINK it claims to fix the BT stack problems. . . but i'm not so sure . . . maybe you dont have to wait for an upgrade =)
hope this helps.
Cheers,
Carlo
bluetooth tools works ok, its the only way i can get my gps to work
Pocket Bluetooth tools works fine, but it doesnt let me use the Bluetooth to send files or phonebook contacts as theres no profiles for it to happen in the current version.
I emailed the author about a month ago and didnt get a reply. I emailed him again last week and got an automated email saying he was on vacation until the end of March.
Im starting to wonder if he's having problems with his next version which he said he'd like to support file and contact transfers.
I doubt he is having problems, bearing in mind its a free program and takes many many hours of programming and effort I would assume he is a busy man. Even the makers of Navman suggest using his path which leads me to believe that he could charge a lot of money for his programming skills. It would be much better if O2 addressed the problem instead taking into account the fact that they released a crippled and brain damaged product to market.
Amen
I spent 3 hours installing 1.60 last night and reconfiguring the machine. Does it improve anything for headset and handsfree profiles? No. bog all. Handshaking with a CK3000 is now even worse.
Waste of b****y time.
I had my XDA II stolen at gatwick airport last week (sniff sniff) and am now looking to replace it.
From the complete range of HTC PDA's the XDA IIi seems to be tickling my fancy the most but I haven't really come across a single comprehensive review.
So are people who have purchased it happy?
Whilst I am aware that there are problems with the camera I can live with it as long as it is not worse than the XDA II .
So what say you O Ye owners of the IIi?
Cheers!
I got mine last week and I'm honestly torn...
The camera is CR*P, completely so! But as I never used the one on the XDA2 for more than the odd picture message and photo record I'm not particularly bothered - though it's a cheek for O2 to pronounce it as a major step forward when in many ways it's a regressive one.
My major headache is the IR and Bluetooth...IR seems even worse now than on the XDA2 - unless I'm missing something - and the BT stack currently on my phone means I cannot use the O2 BT clip headset (made by iTech) due to this (in my opinion) stupid handsfree obsession. Surely it would be a good idea to have a headset AND a handsfree option that WORKS. I understand on some headsets it works a treat, but given I've got one being sold by O2 on their website I would normally assume it would work.
That said, the 2i is a great phone in itself and if I weren't already spoilt having had the XDA and XDA2 before it, I would be in absolute amazment.
They've finally managed to get the o2activeui thing in a state which isn't too bad and I may even consider keeping it - though it's harder to remove than in the past.
If you have to upgrade which it sounds as though you do given your circumstances, I'd choose the 2i over the 2s...at least the 2i is a better phone spec wise though without the keyboard (gimmick if you ask me).
Hope this helps (helped me to have the rant, anyway).
Cheers
Anthony
Thanks for the feedback Anthony. One thing that's slightly irritating me is a few places i've visited on the net state how previews often have some of the specs wrong on the O2 site it states that the IIi has 128MB SDRam and 128MB Flash......is this accurate?
Have you tried out the Wifi and if so what d'you reckon?
Does the faster processor make a noticeable difference? e.g on my XDA II I was running loads of today plug ins as well as several applications by default I'd do a soft re-set at least once a day
As for the IIs even though when I compare the II and the IIs side by side it doen't appear that much bigger it still has a bulky-ish look about it and I just don't find it appealing enough to contemplate a purchase.
Your feedback on the above would be appreciated
Cheers
This is on the box...
96MB ROM
128MB SDRAM
I have tried out the Wi-Fi and it seems OK to me, certainly it's a welcome feature. However I don't have a Wi-Fi card that I can compare experiences on...all I know is I didn't have one before and now I have a wi-fi connection. That can't be bad.
I don't have enough stuff loaded onto the phone to make a judgment on the processor. With the 2 I had lots of things running such as WeatherPanel and KitaraGenesis - also at one point Pocket Plus. From what I've seen so far the 2i does feel a bit faster...there's also a Turbo feature which does seem to further increase performance.
The 2i is exactly the same size I think, perhaps a smidge heavier. Having said that, if you compare most mobiles these days, the XDA series is no longer heavier than the majority. Besides, if you've got a PDA phone you're not expecting it to be light as a feather.
As I said previously, now you've got no option I would definitely go to the 2i...
Cheers

As to theWiFii hadaXDA2 witha SandiskWiFi Card, then changed to the XDA2s, then after 4 replacements i now have a XDA2i, ifind the XDA2i range and speed of reconnecting to WiFi very very good, the XDA2s worked as well asthe XDA2 + SD WiFi Card.
I like the 2ivery much, only problem is i gave away all my XDA2 bits when i got the 2s, so now i have lots of bits for a phone i dont have and a 2i with no spair bits, got i wish i haddent got rid of my old XDA2 bits
i still soft rest a few times aday, but i am used to donigthis now and dont have a problem doing it, The Bluetooth for headsets (jabbra 250) works as well on the 2i as it did on the old XDA2, where as the 2s was total crap
John
4 replacements???!!! care to elaborate?
Applecom, how do you find the camera?
Has the bluetooth improved at all? With my XDA II I also has a Jabra BT250 whilst I found it excellent at close range as soon as the device was in (or out) the metal proporta case and in my pocket I got alot of static...also can you now hear the different ringtones in your bluetooth headset or is it still the same generic one?
Finally, if I get the phone from O2 with their minimum line rental fee it works out to about 407 quid in total....anyone know of any cheaper places?
Thanks for the feedback once again guys.
After hearing about the new XDA2s i purchased a sim free PDA2k, but the microphone on it was crap and the bluetooth (headset) range was like 6 inches after that it sounded terrible.
So as soon as we could get a UK XDA2s we did ( we are a small phone shop) i got it sim free, This was just as crap as the PDA2k, Sothen i did a upgrade to a XDA2s with o2 Select, and of corse this was crap as well
(by crap i mean the mic was terrible people had problems hearing me, and the bluetooth headset only worked if you held the phone next to it, as a PDA it was sort of alright)
so after speaking to o2 about its problems and the fact the keybopard soon comes loose, it was changed probley every 2-3 weeks, never any better for phopne calls but of corse a new one the keyboard is still tight (for a while)
anyway after the 6th phone (4th o2 replacement) i changed it to a XDA2i
The camera in the XDA2i just gives a bigger crap picture, but at leat i can make phone calls on this one and people can hear me, and i dont have to drive down the road with my bluetooth ear piece in and have to hold the phone to the ear piece to use it
John
dear oh dear.....thats the strongest case i've EVER heard for NOT buying a phone...
Not to get on your nelly but can you now hear the different ringtones in your bluetooth headset or is it still the same generic one?
Cheers
Leroy
bump
my jabra 250 just makes the ring sound, just like on the old XDA2, no personalised ring tones, despite using IA Caller 1.2
Thank you all for the info
Does the movie function work better?
I know the camera makes a bigger "crap" photo but how is the video? On my XDAII, with all the today plug in's, the thing records crap even at the best settings. With a fresh ROM and nothing installed, I can get a decent video if I set the refresh rate and set it to daylight, (even for night shots), but after I install some programs, no settings can keep it from being choppy and slow or keep the sound in sync with the video.
Believe it or not, the video function, as bad as it is, actually saved my ass from going to jail.. If the XDA2i has better video performance, and it sounds like the BT is better, I want one... Is there any place besides eBay and O2?
Could someone tell us what version of the BT stack it is?
Any body try it with two serial ports yet? (One for a GPS and one for a Printer or POS device (like from Merchantanywhere.com).
Thank you for your time.
the bt stack on my xda2i is 1.0.0.3900
Mine is also 1.0.3900 and I can't use o2's bt clip headset with it....refuses to play ball yet others work fine.
Grrrrr
Need an update to sort this out.
By clip do you mean the earpiece, with a foot of wire then a clip on bluetooth reciever? If you do O2 sent one of them out to me but as i use a jabra 250 i never tried the clip thing.
Would you like me to try it with my XDA2i (also version 3900)
John
Have you made a decision on a purchase yet?
I have both an XDAII and an XDAIIi and would be willing to give some comparitive information regarding them. Or try to answer any specific questions you have about them.
On another note, what alternatives do we have here with regard to a Windows Mobile device?
Sucessfully downloaded and installed the WWE imate ROM on their web site and reinstalled all apps without any problem.
Maybe I am too quick to conclusions, but I noticed NO CHANGE AT ALL!!!
Bluetooth is exactly as before, call quality is unchanged, the *&^%* Jam still cannot send anything by Infrared and worse, the Camera quality is now worse than pre patch!
Overall not a bad upgrade really, just a waste of time and effort!
I finally got all my apps installed as well. Wasn't easy. And to sum it all up, I didn't notice any discernable differences. Sound quality is the same. Stability is the same.
Anyone know what fixes and updates were supposed to be included in the update? Or did anyone find anything at all to be any different?
The only thing I can tell that it did was make my mp3's sound horrible. Very muddy sounding. I'm about to odwnload pocket music and see if the eq on there can fix it. Also looking for a way to downgrade.
Question for you imaters:
I had an imate for 3 weeks and sent it back to Amazon, bought the MDA Compact instead.
T_mobile has no support for this phone : they built correctly the first time
BT Active Sync with PC, no problem, but I never managed this with Imate
BT with GPS, worked with both IMATE & MDA
The MDA rom is stable, has good sound, photo's are ok, like all HTC devices.
So why not just leave Imate and change to the MDA UK Rom??

This makes sense as the operators often do a fair amount of the own device QA, change requests, etc. when they look at any new device. If they don't, they pay for it in customer support. Imate being a relatively new company has yet to prove whether or not it has the same structured approach to their product management. I tell you one thing, Imate will certainly not have the same amount of resources available to them nor will they have as much attention from HTC. That said there is a lot to be said for not being an operator when it comes to efficiency (but that is a different story). Enough editorial...
Does anyone know what the major differences are between the new imate ROM and the current MDA UK ROM? Has anyone used both and/or done a side by side comparison? Does it work on other networks? I'd be interested to hear more.
Ian Wood
I had both
I had both and the major difference lay in the sound and the Bluetooth. Which is why I sent the Imate back.
Besides that, I have had an XDA1, XDA2, and the mda is the most stable rom yet (though the 2003 SE was pretty good on XDA2)
Also price, Imate =389GBP, Amazon, MDA=240GBP, given that it works better, it was a no brainer here.

Is that with regards to stability and quality or are there more features as well? In your estimation, is the difference worth a full reinstall? Thanks for the feedback btw.
Ian
imho the new rom is NOT worth a hard reset and all the reinstalling/reconfiguring/resyncing that goes with it.
to be blunt, I cannot see the difference unless I REALLY go looking for it.
I did the upgrade no problems, and my sound quality is a bit better. (less tinny) I recommend that if you do the upgrade use a quality backup program like sprite backup. I simply restored my previous backup over this upgrade and it went smoothly. I understand a fresh start is also sometimes preferable for for testing and If no problems, then I stick with this. If I start having difficuties then I'll reboot. The reduced hassles makes the 20-30 bucks for sprite backup worth it.

where is the ROM for JAM WWE???
Click here to download the Arabic ma_cdlsku2_arb_10300_141_10100_ship.exe (29 MB) or
Click here to download the Italian ma_cdlsku10_ita_10304_151_10100_ship.exe (26 MB) or
Select HTTP or FTP link to download the USA ROM ma_cdl_10600_150_11000_ship.exe (46 MB)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok my iMate JAM has this under device info:
ROM: 1.03.00 WWE
Radio: 1.01.00
ExtROM: 1.03.143WWE
But looking at the iMate website I cannot see a WWE ROM... can I use the USA ROM or should I wait for the WWE ROM?
Cannot get a ROM
I have tried following the link that everyone has for the ROM at:
ClubIMate . . .
ma_cdlsku1_wwe_10300_143_10100_ship.exe
ma_cdlsku2_arb_10300_141_10100_ship.exe
But I get Page Cannot Be Displayed.
My previous experience with I-Mate, having bought a used JAM, was that I now had to buy a membership and get an ID and Password to get anything.
Does anyone have the file OFF SITE from the club, or does anyone have a password, yada yada?
Barring all that, has anyone built a better ROM than that? Is there a kitchen available for it?
And anyone looking for themes I am selling a collection of mine on eBay and offer to sell 6 for the price of 3 to anyone that references xda-developers . . . I hope you like.

All,
I recently purchased a T-Mobile UK MDA Compact and when I make a phone call the audio through the ear piece is very poor. The other person in the conversation keep getting a echo so they hear themselves repeating words also if they talk loudly the ear piece distorts. I took the phone to a T-mobile shop and they agreed with me and suggested I get a new SIM card which I did but it made no difference.
I also found that if I hold the MDA compact next to my ear with or without a sim card inserted and switched on I can hear some electrical interference coming from the ear piece.
I spoke with T-Mobile UK who said they was not aware of any problem but will send me a replacement. I have had 4 replacements now and all have the same problems poor audio and electrical interference and it is driving me mad now.
I used to have an old Siemens S55 and the audio conversation on that was so much better, it was like talking face to face with the person.
The only way I have managed to resolve this problem is too use my Sony HBH600 Bluetooth headset with the MDA Compact which produces much better audio. Has anyone else experienced these issues I am having?
Will a ROM update fix this problem?
Has anyone used the original i-mate Jam on T-Mobile UK and got these problems?
I spoke with a T-Mobile UK engineer who said the MDA Compact’s have downgraded audio in comparisons to other manufactures but in my opinion the audio is terrible.
Thanks
Msuk
Hi Msuk,
Its not just you. I believe the problem is with the unit its self. I did read somewhere on this site that the problem lies in the earpiece speaker itself.
The link said that it was of low quality. The author of the post replaced the internal speaker with that of a better grade and the was a marked improvement on the quality of the audio. This unfortuantly seems to be the only way at the moment to improve the quality. I belive he replaced the speaker with one from a nokia 6610 as it was an exact replacement.
Just looking for link......
found it :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=18384
Hope this helps
It was me who replaced the speaker and YES a ROM upgrade to the latest ROM WILL improve the sound quality! So I suggest you first upgrade your MDA to the 1.11 ROM which is the latest (imate ROM seems to be the best so far) and if that doesn't help then try to change the speaker to a nokia 6610 one! But they seem to be exactly the same anyway! Just in some cases with the first T-Mobile ROMs the Magician was set to a very high volume that was making the speaker to blow up cause it could not handle the power load!
Thanks all, can someone tell me where I can get the latest i-mate 1.11 rom?
Thanks
Here is the link to the latest imate ROM http://www.imate.com/support/JAM/ROM/JAM_WWE_11100_132_11100.exe you have to unzip it to a folder and get the cracked MAUpgrade from XDA-Developers FTP, copy it to the folder you created with the ROM files and then RUN the cracked MAUpgrade and flash your T-Mobile phone with the imate ROM. In case you have problems the first time you try to upgrade then run again the cracked exe file and the second attempt will make it to the end of the upgrade procedure!
Hi,
Thanks for your response, when I upgrade my MDA with the i-mate 1.11 rom will I need to change the country code at all?
If so how do I do this and change it to what ?
Thanks
Msuk
Hi,
I am unable to connect to the ftp server could someone please send me the cracked MAUpgrade?
Also do I need to disable the USB connection in my ActiveSync before I run the MAUpgrade?
Thanks
Msuk
Hi,
I managed to get the cracked MAUpgrade but when I run it I get a country code error, does anyone know how I can get round this?
Thanks
Msuk
Hi katsj,
I have the MA_Dangaard_WWE_11100_129_11100 rom is there any advantage to upgrading to JAM_WWE_11100_132_11100.
And would it be better to do fresh install on all my apps or just restore from previous back. I'm not sure if restoring backups on a new rom will replace new setting and files the new rom upgrade puts in place.
Thanks
So, is there a point of changing the speaker if it is the same as 6610 one? Do I have to solder anything if I want to change speaker in my MDA Compact?
And what about the microphone? People who I call to, complaint that they hear me with triple echo?
I have a newest rom 1.11 for MDA Compact
Hi msuk,
I used this one it gave me no country error.
I had bought a O2 Atom last year, the problems were with the WI-FI ,
Submitted it to the O2 Service Center,
Result :
The told me the Main Board was faulty and did not have a replacement.
They would call me when and as it is available.
TILL date no call or replacement.
1 YEAR AND NO REPLACEMENT MAIN BOARD,
Proof :
Enclosing the Service Report Form.
I am a WM phone user ever since it was launced. and a member here on the forum since 2003 keeping tracks regularly. I seriuosly recommend chosing a manufacturer who would handle customers, 800 $ for a phone is a significant amount, How many would like to see that go down the drain..
Thank You,
Girish Kadel
Why dont u ask them to provide you with a new unit. Or You can take them to consumer court.
And another one gets bitten by the Atom. You probably won't get a new board since O2's no longer supporting a vanilla Atom. Push for a new unit if you can.
(Frankly, I have no idea why nobody tried to take O2 and Quanta to court for knowingly releasing screwed up units out of the box. We ought to set precedents for this sort of thing, especially if its a unit we can't fix ourselves.)
hi,
i have O2 Atom ,, and 2 months ago i had a problem connecting the device to the PC ,,, i went to the service Center ,,they told me there's a problem in the board and they replaced it,, and it only took 2 weeks and they were so helpful,, i think it depends on the place ,, i live in Saudi Arabia ,,, anyway ask for a new unit ,, and they'll help u ,,,
bro gkadel, out of thousand, you are one of the unlucky.
For me, so far so good.
I live in HK. I have just replaced my motherboad 1 month ago. however, I have waited for 2 months.
I had the same problem as well. I didn't leave my atom for them, they haven't called me. I have kept waiting for 2 months. So i went to O2 centre again and leave the phone to them. They replaced my atom motherboard within 3 days.
I am not sure how they work internally. But i suggest you dicusss with them face to face. Since they always forgot cases, they never call customer back.
same thing happened to me, location: O2 Service Center Singapore.
the device cannot connect to any telco provider, changing the SIM card didn't change anything. it just won't register to the network, keeps searching...
so I leave it in the service center and they promised to call back which they never did. I have to repeatedly call them for status update. Then after almost a month they quote me S$400 plus for a mainboard replacement, which I refuse to pay, it's too much.. so I claimed back the device and still have to pay S$47 for a service charge.
furthermore.., the void sticker which covers the little screws in the back casing still intact. which means, during that time when my O2 is at the service center, they didn't even bother to check the inside component at all. and there's no sign of a hard-reset attempt too. so they just propose to change the mainboard without doing any physical checking at all.

I used the Xphone II in early days, then O2 change their repair service provider to some guy in Bugis Junction and I really don't like it. From then no O2 for me. I am actually contemplating of trading in my 818Pro for the atom exec cos the price is cheap now at M1. but seeing so much negative comments, i changed my mind.
I want an 818Pro but I found an Atom Exec before I found the Dopod. I think the Exec is an awesome phone. I've set mine up properly now and it is very good. Very fast and responsive, the O2 software is great -- O2 Plus works so well I don't have to install other musthaves I used to have like spb pocketplus, vBar, etc -- call reception is great and speaker volume is loud enough.
My only problems with it are the battery life -- but that's a problem with any PocketPC -- and the 2.5mm jack which outputs such poor quality sound, so if I want to use the phone as an MP3 player I have to use a bluetooth stereo headset (which in turn drains the battery life even faster).
The Atom Exec is an awesome phone, don't let all these negative comments deceive you.
PS -- the original Atom may be bad but the Exec is very good out of the box as far as I can tell.

Thkx Mochan. a bit of a confidence booster there. my 818Pro is only slow, and doesn't have A2DP or radio. I like to have radio, and it has macro camera mode, good for close up shots. Only if they have a more complete 818Pro.
