I just got this phone (HTC Wizard/MDA VArio) as a free upgrade and I spent hours last night trying to hook them both up so I can simply transfer files from one to the other. I couldn't get them to link.
Are they compatable in terms of just transfering files? I was hoping to sync the address book, calender, etc
I have done a search on this forum for things relating to Macs but I'm a bit confused with some of the topics. As you can see I'm a total novice and not very technical so I was wandering if anyone can help me out in terms of easy straightforward answers?
I'm quite familiar with Macs but I've never used PC's/windows before so if I don't get any help I may need to return this phone
Cheers in advance
To my knowledge there is not presently a way to sync the MDA with a Mac, unless of course, you have an Intel-based Mac and Bootcamp installed with a copy of XP.
In time Pocket Mac or the Missing Sync will have a menas of syncing them.
Up to this point I've been transfering my phonebook via bluetooth a few contacts at a time. This is only a temporary measure and a poor one at that.

Don't panic. The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 5 is worth looking at. It is at alpha version 9 as of this message, and it will allow you to at least get the address book to your phone. That is a huge help.

You can use Bluetooth to send and receive files... it works like a champ... though I'm on the Cingular 8125, so ymmv.
You can send CAB files via Bluetooth to install software. Some silly developers distribute .exe files, and those require some special attention (Open them in VPC, the find the CABs and send the from the Mac via Bluetooth. )
Anyway, don't send it back just yet! We're close.

Have you used Missing Sync? I have not but have heard mixed reviews -- most leaning on the negative.
I've used PocketMac and early versions messed up my address book beyond repair. In all fairness that was the original release version. More recent versions have worked perfectly.
Regardless, neither PM or MS have Windows Mobile 5 support as a stable product at this point.

I'm using Missing Sync 2.5a9 now... the alpha version, with my Cingular 8125. I'm giving it some leeway, it is alpha after all. My address book, calendar data, and tasks are all in tact.
I have no experience with PocketMac, so I can't speak to your experience with it.
that sounds promising. do you need a copy of missing sync to get the alpha?

Yes, and I took the risk ;-) Just be sure to read the mailing list archives before you plunk down the cash... the process is much better with a9, but it still isn't perfect.
The bottom line though is that I have all of my data on my 8125... and that rocks.
hmmmmmm....
so, on your report, i purchased missing sync. the v.2 version installed without issue. i then upgraded to the alpha and now the app won't start up -- it pops up on my screen then disappears. did you have that problem?
i've been perusing the support pages but can't find a solution.
i should rephrase that...the app starts up then quits, as in dead.
looking through their site i must say they have the worst documentation i've seen in recent years.
i've tried dumping the plist files and that doesn't seem to help.

Interesting. I did not have that problem... and I don't remember that being an issue at all on the alpha mailing list. Here are the archives:

Hi All,
Well I've kicked off my first windows mobile project with a progam I call "WordNetCE". If anyone is familiar with Princeton University's program called WordNet you will know you can use it as a brilliant dictionary/thesaurus, amongst other things that are beyond a normal human's intelligence.
One thing I've found lacking for Pocket PC is a decent free dictionary/thesaurus, so I've set out to make one based upon WordNet which is free to distribute from Princeton. A person named Malcolm Crowe did the original .NET port for WordNet 1.6, so I modified it to work with the new WordNet 2.0 dictionary, as well as with the Pocket PC platform (it wasn't all copy & paste...).
It's free to download from http://www.ebswift.com/PocketPC/WordNet/.
Note though that I have only just barely kicked this project off, but the dictionary side of things is operating. You will find much of the other functionality isn't working, but will come online soon.
Please check it out and start giving me some feedback. Thanks.
Just fixed up a lot more of the functionality - it's more useable compared to what it was before if anyone had a chance to look. A couple of buttons are still not complete, as with most of the main menu, but it can do about 20 times more than what it could this morning.
Look very promising!
Just one question: Is it mandatory to store the WordNet database onto a storage card, or can I store it on internal RAM too?
the cab installer didnt work on my xda. T-mobile wm2003

At the moment it's mandatory, but there's no reason why I can't add an option. Not many people will be able to use main memory because the database is ~over~ 30 meg!

I wonder why? I'm using the T-Mobile 4.01.16 ROM on an XDA 1 and installed the CAB with no problems. Are you using an XDA 2? I'm not sure if there's any difference with the CAB installers between XDA1/2, or maybe there's corruption in the download file, I'll check tomorrow. VS.NET outputs CAB's for all the difference PPC processors, so I'll put them up ASAP to cover other devices than the XDA1.
Thanks for the feedback
Here's a screenshot that's also on the website :

I'm really sorry about that, my download algorithm had a response.end, so a "Thread Aborted" was being tagged onto any download. Changing that to Response.Flush seems to have fixed it, at least for that cab file.

Hey man, no appologies needed. Great work, thanks for the great freeware. It worked great.
Thanks Iggy. Bear with me for a few minutes if there's any problem with the download, I'm just writing some referrer protection into downloads. It won't take long.
===OK, the referrer protection is finished and it's all working again...
I just uploaded a version I call 0.5 because it's 0.5% finished. Compared to the version since I posted last in this thread there's some major bugfixes; the adjective and adverb menus now correctly show, and there's versions for different processors.

sorry ebswift, the download links don't seem to work, and once you have fixed them what is the difference between arm & arm4 (xda ii maybe). let me know when it is fixed.
The download is now fixed ~again~...
I already responded to Iggy, but just so the group knows, ARMV4 is the one that seems to be uploaded to my device during debug sessions, so I can safely say that ARMV4 is somehow newer than ARM. So I guess anything XDA1 or upwards can use ARMV4. I have had both working on my XDA1 and I can't see any difference in operation, although I haven't tested for performance.
Nice job brother. Now works perfectly
Well I added the little convenience of the keypad popping up automatically, and popping away on lost focus. There's also a couple more menu items in operation. It's really not far away from working completely, most of the technical stuff is out of the way.
Just downloaded and tried, excellent work. Thanks for setting up the keyboard, makes it a lot easier. Looking forward to the final version, but so far excellent.
I just upgraded to 0.53 so the history works (or should work).
I'm really happy the way this project is going.
All features operating
I have just uploaded WordNetCE .99 with ALL features now operating. Please update to that version and let me know if there's any bugs. Thanks!
For those of you who tried that latest download and found it didn't work, it is now patched, you should be able to get it up and running now.
I'm trying to bluejack with my M2000 running WM5. I've tryed various software but none of it works, Dose anyone know of any software that will do this? I used to be able to do it in WM2003 just by sending contacts via bluetooth.
Thanks in advance WWWeed........
I would love to find a good pocket pc program that could automaticly bluejack people.on my old P800 i use a program called s-man that does a constant scan for other phones and then sends a message to them over and over again

bluejacking...
Hold your breath...
I'm currently implementing bluejacking in btCrawler.
It's already working for PPC but I need a few more days to put everything up for Smartphones...
You will be able to send messages AND files!
You can for example create your own "special" version 3 vcard including a photo or sound and then send it with btCrawler.
I'm also planning to implement something like a proximity mode. When a device comes in range a predefined automessage or file is sent...
however, link is: http://www.silentservices.de/btCrawler.html

Bluejacking is the practise of sending text or files to other bluetooth compatible devices that support OBEX push. Most people think it has something to do with Hijacking, but infact it's just named after the guy who came up with it named Jack. Bluejacking in not "Hijacking" or "Hacking" in any sense, you can only push, not pull.
Cornholio you are a star!, i didn't relise you had been making this program, you should start a thread to see if many people are interested!, i will try it out, have you tryed using Sman.sis on a sony Ericsson phone, its very good-it might give you a few ideas.
Oink i have got sniper-it seems a bit slow and fragile but i havnt tested it enough to give a good appion so my mind might change
Ok, so since T-Mobile and Cingular (here in America) want to ban the use of AIM 2.0 on the Pocket PC, and instead, use their service (which charges 10cents an IM), I was wondering if anyone has worked on a hack to fix this.
Basically, both companies have done something to the software, in which when AIM is installed, it will not allow you to sign on. Please note... I am NOT looking for a replacement suggestion for AIM, I am looking for the AIM program itself. There has to be SOME sort of way around this tweak, and I am truly hoping one of the many genius minds that browse this forum would be so kind enough as to help.
do you some sort of error or it just doesnt send
have you tried agile..? it has all the instant messengers
Hello!
This is what I use, and I don't seem to get 10 cents a IM.
Just unzip the cab and transfer it to your device and install!
*Edit* I am in the USA also, just so ya'know.
Agile messenger would be your best bet.
It acts a service and send text messages to your phone instead of the actually message. Just as long as you have a text plan you should be fine.
I prefer Verichat to Agile. The only draw for Agile right now is that it's free, but it's beta. The beta version of Agile likes to crash a lot. Verichat is on th expensive side, but I think it's worth it.
Go here, aol.co.uk and download the aim version for mobile. It's free as compared to installing the EXACT SAME VERSION from the U.S. aol.com which they want $19.99 for. The installer has capabilities for installing on a wide range of pocket pc's, as well as ones with MIPS and ARM processors.

They charge $20 for that chunk of crap?!? That thing barely functioned under 2003 3 years ago.

My son and I both use Agile on our 8125's with a data plan. Agile useage goes against the kb/data, NOT the text messaging. You have to be connected to the internet to use Agile -- either through WiFi or GPRS.
We've NEVER been charged for text messaging using Agile.
Great! I can cancle my text message plan.

There is but it won't work on WM5...
Unless some one can hack it like that above AIM program to move the WM5 start bar to the bottom when the program is active.
Let me break it down for you gentlemen...
Basically what's been happening (here in the east coast of the US at least) is Pocket PC phones have been becoming increasingly more powerful. Obviously, T-Mobile and Cingular are no dummies to waves, so they started to release some of their own. But in an attempt to garner more money, they've been releasing their own versions of AIM, which basically charge the user a text per message (sent or received). In addition, they basically disabled the old AIM 2.0, which was (and still is) highly popular amongst Pocket PCs that aren't branded, or simply don't have a phone equipped in them.
That button on the button that says "Sign On"? It's not there anymore. Neither is the File or Edit menus. There's something embedded in the registry that doesn't allow the usesr to use this version of AIM... which is why I created this topic to begin with.
Now as I stated originally, I wasn't looking for alternatives to AIM 2.0 on the Pocket PC... I like this version a lot. Back when I was using my unbranded i-mate Jam, I suppose I've gotten inclined to using this version more. I've tried Agile Mobile, but it is still way too buggy for me to want to use as my end-all be-all to AIM. And it's missing a lot of features I've grown used to with AIM 2.0. Other IM clients cost money for something I think should be freely distributed.
To anyone using an i-mate K-Jam, or a QTek 9100... this post simply doesn't apply to you. You picked up your phone unbranded, meaning you have no restrictions from your carrier. And I envy you because of that. But since I'm cheap and I'm getting my Cingular 8125 for $50, I'm trying to figure out some workaround to the situation. Hopefully someone can figure out a hack soon.
MightyMegit ... how certain are you that the program you posted doesn't use texts? Does it use data? I don't have a Wizard yet (hopefully within the next 24 hours), so I'm not able to test it out myself.
Anyway, thanks guys for your help, but I really want my AIM 2.0 back. I wish all you developers luck!!!
thanks for the clarification. i started using the aim 2.0 yesterday.
No wonder i noticed to menus or sign on options. What i do i select "stock quotes" or w.e and that signs me on.
It looks just like aim on pc and has aim sounds so i like the look of it. There just isnt options
Hey all,
I have been using Agile Messenger since june or so..so far I have downloaded "new version" of the app into my phone twice. The last one is really cool and I have been using it for about two weeks w/o any probs, but when I turned the app on yestreday, it displayed message "Thanks for trying this trial version, you have 7 days left". Is Agile Messenger not free anymore? And if it's not, do you think I could continue using one of the older versions? Thx for any suggestions Longlife
Having the same problem, the subscription fee is pretty high.
Don't know about the old versions...
Eelco
I think I have the old version of Agile. If you guys want, you can try it and let us know if it will work or if we actually have to pay after the trial period.
its not problem its normal agile done same thing with symbian version now they will ask you to pay for windows mobile version. it is undestandable because with agile u use their server but anyway i belive messenger live will be here soon and it will be better than agile, so no need to pay for agile
The old version I had stopped working
I had the old version and had been using that. I started getting messages when I would start it up that a new version was available. I kept saying "no" but eventually after saying that it came back and said I needed to upgrade to the new version if I wanted to continue to use Agile. That's when I finally upgraded, but then when I got the "You have 7 days left" message and looked closer to find that the new version had a monthly charge, I went ahead and removed it from my Universal.
I can somewhat understand them charging for it, and would have been willing to pay a one time purchase fee, or MAYBE a smaller monthly fee, but the rates I saw looked high for just one app. No thanks.

Too bad Thx eveyrone for your answers though I agree that the fees for using Agile are way too high, if it was like 20 USD for the app with all the future upgrades, I would probably buy it but this way... Anyway, just one more question: which free messenger capable of connecting to ICQ would you recommend instead of Agile plz?
No response from Agile
I wrote them a message via the address at the agile website asking if there would be any way to buy the software outright. It has been over a week and there has been no response. I really like the software. I would be willing to pay for it, but I do not like software subscriptions.
I am more bothered by the lack of response to my message though. It shows me that there will be no customer support for a program that they will continue to collect money for.
does the latest version look better on VGA? Still haven't updated my version... They shouldn't charge if it doesn't work well on our devices. I have no problem buyin it as long as it displays properly [I sent agile an email asking about VGA support but did not get a response *no surprises there*]
Good bye Agile
Been using Agile on my Symbian Nokias since 4 years and the same thing happened 2 years ago. Suddenly they asked for monthly subscription of 3 € via SMS or 19 € forever, but locked to the SIM card, I have 4 of them in different countries of Europe so I wrote to them then and they replied like they would let me on all for SIMs but I gave up Nokia as well as Agile on it.
Now I see that they have came up with something even crazier like monthly, HIGH, subscription, charging for the service rather then the software itself!?!
I am sorry, I like Agile very much, but I will never agree to the terms they are asking... and I think that their PPC version is far from ready...
Good bye Agile...

Ok, I tried to find a freeware alternative to Agile Messenger..and guess what? I found one. It's by ICQ.com and it's pretty cool, I didn't fully explore it yet but it seems to offer most of the latest Agile's features. You can download it from here:

I'm sorry, as I only use ICQ, I forgot to mention that this app only supports ICQ, not AIM, Yahoo, MSN or anything else..which is a considerable disadvantage compared to Agile as I now see.
About the CAB file - I don't have it and I didn't manage to find it anywhere, but maybe you will
Aynway, I played with the application a bit and discovered that it:
- doesn't support landscape mode (which is pretty sad)
- supports Invisible, Occupied, DND, N/A and Away statuses (without entering custom status messages though)
- works with groups
- allows you to change your account details
- doesn't let you close conversation windows (at least I didn't find a way to do so..but it's pretty weird I'd say )
- has a cool but probably not so useful feature that downloads latest stock-exchange rates
- has VERY ugly smileys (IMO)
But depsite it's several disadvantages, I'd say it still remains a nice (and free) way to chat with your ICQ contacts on the go.
Oh and btw, if you want an all-in-one IM client and are willing to pay, check this: http://mobile.lockergnome.com/product.asp?id=248
It looks pretty good and you can get it for 40 USD for ever, not like with Agile where you have to pay 30 USD every year. It's still too expensive for me though
I've tried Shape IM+ as well it seems nice but my provider has blocked it! Can't connect using 3G/UMTS/GPRS works fine with WiFi and Activesync passthru. Oh I only use the Yahoo component.
thanks for post up the info
new PPC-based freeware ICQ client on the scene!
Ok, so here's another update on the topic
A few days ago, I discovered that QIP (russian closed-source freeware ICQ client; www.qip.ru) had released a PPC version of their program. I have downloaded it straight away and I must say that it's by far the best ICQ client for the PocketPC platform..well..that's just my opinion but I'm pretty sure most people will agree once they try it out It supports most of the PC-based-QIP's functions including various statuses (incl. invisible, invisible for all, custom statuses with pictures and others), several sets of smileys (standard, animated, text), complete contact information etc. etc. Be sure to check it out on www.qip.ru

Hi!
I have had this phone for a few days and have unlocked and upgraded to WM6!
I am really happy as I have just upgraded from my HTC Alpine!
My only remaining problem is Bluetooth.
A) I have to turn on Bluetooth before I can send a file within explorer.
B) I can't receive files at all! It simply says ERROR on the senders phone.
The latter is the more important one which I need a fix for ASAP. I have trawelled the web and have not seen a fix.
I have obviously made sure that my phone can be detected and to receive all incoming beams as well as pairing them. Still no luck.
I also had a look at Bluezard which looks quite good as an extra, (want to recieve files without it) but it look quite old and no longer in development, is there any other application that does the same thing that it perhaps a bit more modern?
Thanks,
Joe/Jophster
In phone settings there an icon for Beam. Check it if not already check. Then try to receive file. If already checked then try to change the sending device may be bluetooth not connecting because of any conflicts.
About sending you have to keep the bluetooth active/on because there is IR port in hermes so it will not ask you to on bluetooth.
Bluezard
Hi
Well the ROM I was using apparently had problems so I have tried a different one and will experiment. It was so easy with my HTC Apline, it is so annoying to do something so simple!
Thanks for the help!

Do you know of any others. Maybe a way to chat via bluetooth or to send multiple files. If not then Bluezard looks like a good solution.
Thanks,
