noob backup battery Q...? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

when is th Backup battery used and for what?
thanks

the magician (and many others older model) doesn't have persistent memory, it needs a battery to keep its contents. The backup battery will not start your phone, but it will keep your data safe for a few days (after your main battery goes dead), giving you enough time to charge your battery.

Super!
thanks for the info!
Cheers,

Have you tried how long the backup battery lasts? Because once my main battery exhausted, and after 30 minutes I put on the charger, and saw the backup battery is at 80 %... So I think the backup battery lasts for a half day, or is it depends on what background porgrams running, or what?

Jam and all other wm2003 device have two type of backup battary option....
1)Which is situated in jam motherboard...a 3v battery...
if u remove ur man battery then it will keep power on ram for 30-40 min at most....after that a hard reset...
2)jam keep a portion of main battery for backup reason...that is if even ur main battery reach 0%...then this backup portion of main battery will keep power to ram for nearly 72hours (3Days)...if ths portion also reach to 0% then the 1st option will work for 40 min..
i think this will clear any quary abt backup battery of wm2003 device..
PS:new wm5 devices doesnt have any backup batter nor the 1st one nor do the 2nd one...as this is a persistent memory based os...thats is one another reson thats why wm5 devices have better battery performance then of wm2003..

battery stuff can someone explain?

okay there is a main battery and backup battery, once my phone was 20 perfect main, and like 30 perfect backup, when i turned the phone in standby the for a long time the main battery went to like 11 percent and the backup went to 100 percent, what do u need backup for, and what happens if it runs out?
The backup battery retains settings and data in the event of a dead main battery, so I assume if both went dead it would be similar to a hard reset, all would be lost.
the back up battery will be the one to hold every data in your phone once you run out of the main battery... it can only sustain up to 20 minutes and after that .. GODBYE to your datas.. unless you can charge your phone before this 20 mins grace period runs out.. goodluck

SD power source - BT power source

I own a i-mate jam (updated with rom 1.12.04 ITA). When The battery power go down 10% i get following message (i traslate from Italian)
"warning: SD/MMC
residual power insufficient for selected divice to work. Close some active functions or connect AC Power adapter for recharge battery and tray again"
Consequently when the power go down 10% i can't use all programs i istalled on sd card.
Before i owned an Hp 1930 pocket pc and i could use sd card under 10% of battery power also.
Same thing with bluetooth: i can't use it under 10% of battery power e consequently i can't use bluetooth headset.
is that a malfunction of the i-mate Jam ?
and is there some workarounds ?
Thank you in advance for the answers.

It is not a malfunction, but a security feature. When going low on power the device turns off those devices to reduce power consumption which will enable it to keep the data in memory for a longer time. This is something conceived for the regular users wh install their stuff to memory, not for power users like us who keep progs on SD etc.
There is no workaround I have have heard of, and the topic came up quite some times here.
Consequently when the power go down 10% i can't use all programs i istalled on sd card.

The best way to avoid this (and do good to your device) is to recharge more frequently. I don't know about your usage, but with the batteries in the Magician it is thought to be better to recharge once the battery reaches 30%-40%. That is supposed to give the longest battery life.
So, if you can recharge more frequently and do not let the battery drain that low. If you are on the go for long periods of time, consider investing in a new high-capacity battery or get a second one so you can change them.

Thanks for your answer.
I know it's better to regharge battery before it drain that low, but as far as i know, the more you recharge your battery the less it lasts.
Besides, even if you own a high-capacity battery, it can happen anyway to remain with a flat battery and consequently without all programs in sd.
Consider that i do all my backups in sd card, than when i remain with low battery power, i can't do any backups.
Finally i can't even use my bluetooth headset.
For all those arguments i would have sd and bluetooth at my disposal even below 10% of battery power.

This is true for NiMH batterys, which are pretty old tech and no used in cellphones and PDAs anymore. In those you had a memory effect. Current Li-Ion or Li-polymer batteries can actually lose capacity when drained so low. It is usually suggested to recharge them when they go below 40% that way the battery will keep the full capacity for the longest time.

It seems that this is not possible... I have not found any kind of hack or solution. Vijay talked about planning to take a close look at it, but I have not read anything about it since...

Very very Interesting web site.
You are right for the li-ion battery charge.
I didn't know it.
Good thing to know.
Thanks psych0t1c.
anyway, if someone knows any workarounds for my problem, any suggestions are welcome.
Didnt read the batteryuniversity page but there is no memory effect in Ni Mh.
Memory effect was in NiCd batteries.
Li Ion is preffred due to 2 reasons -
1. Power to weight ratio
2. Life
High capacity battery.
Hi,
I have an O2 IIi, with a 3600 mAh and I can go for more than 3 days with it.
When I get to 10% of the battery I can for more than 8 hours. Stand by, and maybe 40 minutes talk time.
Isn't there any registry hack to modify that 10% ?
It would be great to be able to change this to maybe 2 percent as my universal is often out of battery when i get to it and i have to wait a long time before i can listen to my music. Surely there is a registry hack for this one.

Atom Battery enquiries

Hi guys, my atom battery only can last me 24 hours, way below the rated 150 hours standby time. i leave it on standby mode for 7 hours, it drains from 100% to 80%.
i didn't charge it for at least 8 hours when i first bought it, instead i used it till it drained (can't wait to use it man!), i guess that's why my battery life now is so short.
Questions
1. is there any way to recover the battery's optimal performance?
2. if not, i think i'm going to buy a new battery. Now with the new battery, can i just put it on to my phone and charge it for 8 hours? or do i have to hard reset?
3. if i have 2 batteries, can i use them at the same time?
Thanks guys!

LOL, thats funnny
Anyway,
I don't think buying a new battery would change it. My friend did, and it makes no different. Still short life battery.
I just found out (i might be wrong) that the problem is not about the battery but the programs you are running. As i just upgrade mine to Atom Exec (they both use the same bat) and I let it runs few hours in stand by mode. The battery only drains like few percent after few hours. In short, 2-3 days per charge.
However, after installing some of the programs. I notice that the battery drains very fast. 1 percent every 15-20mins? Im not sure, but i can tell that its so much faster then when i installed some programs. So i'm trying to figure it out which program that drains the battery so fast. I think it might be Pocket Plus (again, got to confirm it, i dont wanna uninstall it yet though) cause thats the only one of the program that i just installed after it running smoothly 2-3 days without charging. Now it only last for nearly a day per charge. And its just few days ago. Has anyone got this problem?
depends on apps that are ruuning, make sure you dont have anything running itthe background (windows defult is to minise instead of close) aslo Li ion polymer battaries are best to be kept on a constant charge, ie when not in use plug it into the USB cable. dont lef the battary drain as that can lead tot eh battary dying.
Thanks for replying guys.
Hmm... i don't think the programs that are installed matter. Because if it's in standby mode, isn't it that the device, or to be more specific, the CPU is not running at all? And no matter how many programs you install, if you don't run the programs, it shouldn't consume any CPU usage.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.
Did your friend charge it for at least 8 hours before he used the new battery and then drain it and charge it for 3 times?
im not saying its because u intalled too many programs. Im saying that some program causes the battery to drains faster. I know that the phone is on stand by mode, but u have to remember application such as pocket plus running all the time in the background (reading battery info etc..). Its just like the phone still picking up signal in stand by mode (of course). thats how the battery drains.
Anyway, i was able to use the phone for 3 days in stand by mode. And now its only around 20 hours. Thats is significant lower (1/3) and its only few days ago as mentioned. So its really something that makes the battery flat quickly. Im too busy to hard reset it to make it like before

1. Have you installed o2plus? If "yes", try to deinstall it. Yesterday, I have found that O2PLUS is the reason of quick discharging of the accum. With O2Plus my Atom worked only 16 hours from full charge till full discharge.
Without O2Plus - it drains from 100% to 90% for the 9 hours(in stand-by mode).
2. No, you don't need in new battery.
3. Yes, if you have some skills in electronic

does backup battery is useful?

we know that backup battery is important in wm2003, but does it still useful when we're in wm06? since the memory still be saved in the main memory..
just a thought= is there any tweak or registry input which read both battery (main and backup) as one unity (a big battery) so after the main battery drains, device will automatically change to backup battery...
regards
adri
The backup battery does not hold enough power to drive the full PDa..it would not last long at all...it is only used to keep the memory data intact.
Works without the backup battery..
I ran my BA for a while without the backup battery. The only thing that happened was that the clock resetted itself on reboot...

Battery dies very fast, how to monitor tasks better?

My battery on the HTC Pure went from 45% charge to 2% auto-shutoff within a matter of 1.5 hours without any usage on my part. In fact, I had rebooted it and not touched it since.
The thing has been dying a lot faster after I installed some programs from Marketplace. I'm wondering if they are doing background processes that zap its power or what.
Any recommendations on monitoring what's going on in the background???
try to calibrate battery
(thanks helgee):
1. Discharge the device. Absolutely.
2. Take out battery for 60 sec.
3. Put the battery back. Don't switch on the device!
4. Charge the device by normal way (not by usb!) to the full state (green LED).
5. Take out battery again for 60 sec.
6. Put the battery back.
7. Switch on the device.
How can you discharged your battery? I didn't find a option on my Touch Diamond 2.

You don't do this unless you want to damage the battery.

Exactly the same thing here, after installing some apps from Marketplace, the batt started to drain very fast. Don't know why yet. The apps installed are:
Mobeedo
Bing
Pocketnow
The Daily News
I've removed Mobeedo, The Daily News and Pocketnow just to test if they were doing something.

Thanks a lot.

Fast battery discharge
I had this very same problem. I had it with WM 6.1 and the Pure. Both due to the same app. BING is your problem. If you have a memory card in your phone it causes it to be constantly accessed instead of just on demand such as with storing pictures from camera. This is a battery life killer. Ditch BING, remove your storage card, save what you want to a PC and wipe it. After that put your saved files back on the card and put back in phone. This should stop the battery drain issue. Hope this helps.
ALSO: Some people swear by the battery drain and charge thing...others do not. Use it if you like but without getting rid of BING or finding a way to keep it from accessing your memory card the difference you will see will be barely noticeable.
