Linux solution for Push Email - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi peeps,
do you guys know if there is a linux solution to get push email working without exchange. I'm thinking of getting exchange 2003 sp2 running in vmware, but it would be much easier to have a native solution. Anyone?
<edit> made correction pointed out below

I've never heard of exchange 2005. I think you mean exchange 2003 SP2
I dont think there is a linux solution for email push because this is a special microsoft feature in WM5.
But exchange 2003 in VMWare sounds good. Take the new VMWare Server for this, its free

Yeah running in VMWare will all be possible. But i have to purchase more memory for it. (its just a poor 733 running basically running all server functions for me) So a native solution would be more convinient. Thx for your answer. -
<edit> http://www.funambol.com might be a solution, but i didn't look into this yet.

Yeah I also was planning to install Vmware on my Redhat Fedora Core 4 server and install Exchange 2003 on it.
My server is a P3 running at 866Mhz with 512MB Ram....so it would be definitely to slow to run a Virtual Exchange 2003 machine on it.
Also because I run Veritas Netbackup 5.1 on it, which is pretty heavy to run.
I'm gonna install Vmware on my laptop (Centrino 1.7Ghz with 512MB) this weekend and lets see if Exchange would run on this machine.
But I really would love to see a sync solution on Linux that could just sync my mailaccount.
I know about some tools that can maybe do this but didn't have a good look into their capabilities:
- Exchange4Linux
- Funambol
- Sync4j

There is pushmail email service if you use an Oracle solution called collaboration suite. Runs natively on Redhat.

@molski: Sync4j is the old version, the new name of this project is funambol, so forget sync4j

Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 Activesync Problem

Since upgrading to Exchange 2003 SP2, nobody can activesync with the server on their devices. Getting:
Activesync encountered a problem on the server
Support Code: 85010014
This is definately NOT a client issue, so detect/repair outlook will NOT work. It is definately something to do with SP2.
Any help please?
Sorry, Mine works fine.
Fixed it.
Integrated Authentication was not set under IIS's Exchange folder.
All works now!!
Ive been having that error message for ages in SP1 was hoping SP2 was gonna fix it
its really odd because i can sync with the administrator account but not my own. Wish i knew where i was going wrong...
If M$ is so keen to promote WM5.0 how come that AS is not yet available for download from windowsmobile.com? It seems that bugs are still abundant! :?:

I need PUSH email from my company email account HOW??????

Hi
I think title says most of it.
I need push email from my companies corporate email system.
We have a Blackberry server but I have yet to find a working Blackberry client for the Wizard?
On my old PDA2K I have been using Smartner Duality which worked great HOWEVER this does not seem to be compaitble with the Wizard so suddenly I have lost my email capability and need to get it back urgently.
Any ideas out there folks?
Cheers.
Robin
PS Smartner client on my desktop in the office used to 'forward' all my outlook mail via a special server they had and thence to my PDA2K.
It is this kind of functionality I am lookiing to replace UNLESS someone actually has the Blackberry client software!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
for MS's push you'll need to wait for a ROM update with AKU 2.0
for the time being you can just set your wizard to sync with your exchange server over the net (wifi/gprs etc) every x minutes
You can try vgsmail by geoffreycross to be found in the thread 'push-email now available' it's developed for 2003 & there are posts by yzzard to get working under 2005 as well. Need to add some reg.keys manual.
Cheers, M

My company is running a REAL OLD version of Exchange server and our Firewall will not allow PDA's to connect!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately this is not an option for me.

Hi
I don't think we have IMAP enabled on our mail server and I would still haev a firewall problem so this won't work for me either.
Robin
Do they support the imap protocol? if so try vgsmail.
Sorry didn't catch your last post, forget this one pls.
I doubt they actually block PDAs since Activesync just runs over port 80 and the mail apps just use standard mail ports. More likely they don't have the appropriate software set up to active sync. Sounds like you might be better off waiting until the next ROM updates (Rumors put it as close as this week, but deffinetly before the end of Q1 this year) and possibly looking into a hosted exchange solution and having your work email forward there.
Robster,
I don't know if Vodafone offers the same thing as T-Mobile here in the states but see if they have corporate email access available, T-Mobile does and it works ok, similar to Smartner (i used that when I was running 2003SE) it works on my network and it is really locked down from outside access and they have disabled pop and imap access plus we are running Lotus Notes (man it sucks)

Smartner Duality and Win Mo 5.0?

Hey Guys,
Due to my companies outdated exchange servers I am in need of a good realtime redirector. I read that Smartner Duality Pro is very good but it doesn't seem to work with Win Mo 5.0. Anyone have any more info on this or could recommend another Real Time Redirector that is compatible with the Wizard.
Thanks,
Alex
can't u ask them to upgrade the exchange server? ... i've used smartner duality before with my XDA 2S but i haven't really used it on a WM5.0 device ... i use an O2 XDA Exec now with mine connecting to our exchange server at the office and it's cool and everything but it has a 1 to 5 second delay compared to using blackberry ...
Cheers!
I have actually looked into it, and apparently they will be upgrading sometime this year, which could mean 2008 knowing this company. I have asked to be one of the first on when it gets up and running. For now I am looking for something to bridge me till that time.

I have used the smartphone client successfully on the vario for sometime, however most recently been having some TCP connectivity issues.

Hi Jim,
Could you tell me which device client did you use. When I tried the 4.1 PPC client it won't install, just hangs up. The Smartphone one does install, however it never initializes once I try to get it going.
Thanks,
A

Like you I have been waiting with less and less patience for a Smartner WM5 client.
Yesterday I think I found the solution but it does seem a good deal more expensive than Smartner.
http://www.esemail.net/index.htm
They do say that you get FULL support including calendars!!!!
My eval is on the way so I shall see.
Robin
Thanks Robin. Ill give it a shot as well and see how it works out.
Well I heard back from them, and they are only licensed to ditribute in Europe, so I am back on the search.
Some optimistic hopes declaims about mid february. Can't say for sure, I'll try to write here when confirmed.
I also heard back from Smartner, Seven, AlwaysOn....whatever their current name is. They will have an official Win Mo 5.0 client out by summer.
Has anyone found a workaround to this. I tried the cab file for Pocket PC and it just hangs on install. The smartphone edition one does install, but can't get it to intialize when I run it.

Smartner Duality and Win Mo 5.0
Contact Dan Metcalfe ([email protected]). In mid December he told me that they (Smartner/Seven) would be supporting WM 5.0 by January 2006 and the O2 mini S which I have. I decided I did not need it so I don't know if it has happened or not
AlexL,
I have this same issue. The work around is NOT to click the "OK" button in the warning dialog box about ActiveSync. Slide this box out of the way so you can get to the menu in the bottom right-hand corner. Under Menu, click on "Settings" -> double-click "Detail". In Detail change the Calendar Sync to "No". Finally, click Done. Then continue through the rest of the setup. Basically mail will work, but the calendar doesn't. There is something the Smartphone version doesn't like about the WM5 appointment database. In addition there are some settings that you can't get to. Like e-mail truncation sizes, etc...

Blaine
Chaps,
Having just upgraded my trusty iPAQ and V3 for a T-Mobile Vario I was mortified to find the PPC Duality 4 client for Lotus Notes won't work. Unfortunately tech support at my organisation won't distribute the smartphone client for me to try even though we have people using C500's.
I don't suppose someone who has access to the V4 Duality Pro Smartphone client could make a copy available?
This is not a request for pirate software as it is useless without the appropriate back end, it's just a frustrated techie who has got himself caught on the bleeding edge while the technology laggards in my IT department pontificate the relative merits of running 'mobile phone' software on a PDA.
Any help would be appreciated as I will look a bit of a tit using my iPAQ to access mail through the bluetooth/GPRS connection or a perfectly good WM5 PDA.
EDIT:
Well I take back what I said about the internal guys, they supplied me with the new V5 ppc client which is 2005/WM5 compatibe and it works a dream.
Regards
Dave
Windows Mobile 5 Client for Smartner Duality
Hi, we have been using the Smartner duality Professional edition, with a PC in the office pushing emails out to 5 mobile devices. I have upgraded everyone to TMobile Variois and the old 4.1 Windows 2003 client will no longer install. Anyone got access to a working Mobile 5 client? The internet only client will not install with the Push connector.
Many thanks

Setting Up Direct Push

Hi Everyone,
I am having a retard moment. Yesterday I found a document in one of the threads with a Word doc on setting up Direct Push mail. Of course I did not save it because I swore I would remember the thread. Does anyone happen to have the instructions?
I have already updated my phone to the proper ROM.
Thanks
Nevermind. Figured it out.
Wow, so far WM5 makes Blackberry look like a child's toy. Let just hope that M$ will continue support this platform.
Agreed as far as I am concerned push mail with WM5 is the way to go, no need for a BES Server or other application on my desktop to route email.
Is direct push out? Where can I download it? I thought it wouldn't be out until April.
jklny
Not offically there is a Qtek TEST Rom on the FTP that has Push, but you must have a 2003 Exchange Server running SP2 to use it.
marka2k, thanks for the info. We are actually upgrading SP2 this Friday. Thanks!
Would you happen to have the full name of the ROM? Thanks.

Wrong ... you may use other servers then Exchange Server 2003. Exchange server has built in push mail. But there exists several other push mail servers that can also do the push. Some of these servers has also client files for WM5.
Einstein
My point (maybe not well said) was in able to use the built in push email of the Qtek TEST ROM you need Exchange 2003 and SP2
Sorry for the confusion
For push mail you need:
1. A mailbox: Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes Server, IMAP or POP3
2. A pushmail server: Any server that's SyncML compatible
3. A client software on your mobile: 3rd party software or Qtek new test ROM
I digged a liitle bit into these issues during the past days. I'm going to put up an test system with push mail soon to my Qtek 9100.
Thanks for the link... I'm downloading it now to give a whirl.
Push Email
FYI- I have been using a "push" email system for several years using my XDA II and my office Lotus notes system by using the Mnotes program. In "enterprise" mode, it can be installed on the server, although I'm using my desktop as the server b/c its the easiest to set up.
Only real problem was finding a compatible VPN and I'm using Movian VPN
Cheers
I am using the qtek rom with 4smartphone.net, and the push system is amazing, believe me it takes about 30 seconds from sending a mail to myself and it appearing on my device via push, its that quick
Push mail
Hi Einstein!
I'm interested to exchange information with you about push mail setup etc. My email is vesku ät email piste com (laita mailia). I have Q9100 too.

Well, I got 'push' running on the QTek beta ROM. Took a little fidling since not using Exchange Front-End servers and I have SSL and Forms enabled.
See this doc: http://www.petri.co.il/problems_with_forms_based_authentication_and_ssl_in_activesync.htm
Now, I just need to modify the timeouts as recommended by several people. First, I have to find the docs explaing it again.

And service/server that supports push mail ...
I'm a bit confused. My exchange server is now upgraded to SP2 and I installed the test rom. Mail is coming in but not 'realtime'. I am getting emails which can be 5 to 10 minutes after I receive it on my desktop Outlook. Any ideas why the delay?
Thanks.

Linux Direct Push Server to Microsoft WM5 Client Possible?

Is Microsofts Direct Push technology in AKU2 proprietary? I'd love to be able to setup just push on emails from a BSD server running Postfix. Anyone know if there is some kind of Unix server that can communicate with the built in client?
I know there is an Open Source server for Unix and a client for PPC but I'd love to be able to use what's built in instead of having to installing another util.
Did you find anything on this? I want to do the same, and may write one if one doesnt exist.
Try:
http://www.funambol.com/opensource/
@britman
I have looked at Sync4j/Funambol, and it has a client that you install, as the OP said. Have you been able to get it to push directly to WM5 without any client addons?
Too be honest, i only found the site....
I haven't tried, because I'm using an Exchange 2k3 server... I only use OpenBSD for firewalls
We are working on a fork of funambol at www.synapsim.com this is one of our intentions and we will be releasing the source code, obviously, once we have achieved it.
Any help welcome
maybe I can help out would like to join a oss project
what kind of help are you looking for?
greets stefan
