There have been lots of postings on how to achieve real VGA. I became interested when someone told me that I would achieve good presentations using Adobe Acrobat Reader with real VGA. So I read page after page on how to do it. I concluded that having real VGA all or most of the time, created so many problems that I would prefer the more limited solution - adding the file with the mystical suffix .0904.mui to the folders with the programs that really needed high resolution. In my case, that is Opera and Acrobat Reader.
This selective use of real VGA is what the producer has built into the Universal. It has been used to achieve the needed high resolution in the programs that really need it, such as Internet Explorer and ClearVue PDF. And probably in some other programs. In the \windows folder, four .exe files have been equipped with the .0904.mui files. And 19 .dll files have been equipped with the file.
Some posters have mentioned that when they were using real VGA in all applications, the strain on the eyes became almost unbearable. And I can well image the problem, although I personally have the advantage of being short-sighted, so by taking off my spectacles, I can read any details.
In my opinion, the producer has been wise, using real VGA when it is needed. A problem arises when we install additional programs which require higher resolution - then we have to use the .0409.mui files.
They have been slightly wise not entirely
the mui trick doesnt work with every application, ie the default Calendar. I prefer the larger VGA based calendar you get when using the VGA Hacks however this is outweighed by the strain of other applications/uses as you have mentioned.
hrmm I suspect the wise way of implementing it would have been by giving us the choice to opt in and out of VGA I mean the mui trick covers most apps but VGA on the desktop, explorer, programs and the calendar is just so very handy and the mui trick cannot resolve that, well maybe the explorer part if I mui'ed resco but still.

Do I just go and find the .exe and change the file extension, or is there more to it than this?
I'm frustrated by the way pdf's are forced to completely redraw (or maybe reload) themselves when you scroll around within a page. It makes them a time consuming hassle. Is there any way to make it scroll smoothly? I'm using the clearvue pdf viewer that was loaded with the Cingular 812555.

Thanks trashman for the suggestion. I'm not worried about paying for the program if it does the trick (though of course I would rather find it for free). Does anybody out there know if mobipocket will help smooth out scrolling when viewing PDF's?

It won't display PDF's, you'll need to convert them, which may result in problems unless your PDF source is fully text-based.
That is, don't even try to convert a, say, graphics-heavy tech book to the Mobi format.
dunno with heavy graphics but with normal graphics, pictures and so on i have no problem with it...and it scroll fast on text and relatively smooth on graphics...
but mene is correct, u cant read a pdf right away, it need to be "converted"...

Yup, with a normal, say, literature book the Mobi format is much better than PDF.
I for one am a fairly heavy PDF user and have always gone back to the bloated Adobe Reader 2.0. Just found this Foxit Reader for Windows Mobile which is still beta but was quite impressive. No installation, just a small executable that I copied to my Program Files directory and changed the PDF default viewer in the registry. It has a stupid nag screen and an Evaluation banner at the top of the that I'm sure will disappear when it's actually released. Looks like it has promise.....
I tried 'em all on my 8125, and settled on Foxit Reader. It only cost me $9.99 for a licensed version, and it works as well as any. It is very fast, takes up very little room and redraws seamlessly. The only drawback to it is that it has no find function. But tables of contents and links within documents are both fully functional. It's the best pdf viewer I've used in all my years of using PDAs and Handhelds.

I did have some trouble in getting the licensed version to keep my registration key from one session to the next, and had to get about 4 different "new" versions from them before they finally got me the fully licensed executable, but they didn't give up and their replies were timely.
Overall I'm very happy with it. I even open 6+Mb manuals with it and it is very fast in doing so, and just as fast in navigating within those large documents.

Okay. The I downloaded the Fox Reader evaluation. Is there anyway to make it the default reader once you get the licensed version?
By the way - it's much quicker to use than the clearvue reader.
RepliGo PDF Mobilizer looks quite nice as well. The viewer for pocketpc is free, but you'll need to convert your PDFs to a custom format with their software, which is shareware (but nothing a quick search with Google can't fix).
The converted files are about half the size of the original PDF without losing layout/features etc.

Use a registry editor, navigatate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Look for pdffile. The Shell\Open\Command. Open the key and copy the text to the clipboard. (Mine says "\\Program Files\FoxitReader for WiM5.0.exe" %1" Close that and go down to Opendoc\Command and replace the text in the entry there.

I have created a small photo viewing application that I wanted to publish to the world. Key features are
- Native C code. No dependencies on .NET or any other library
- Tiny (just 25Kb)
- Full screen photos with gestures and hot-spots
- Slide-show mode
- Nice transitions (you can see them all in the slide show mode)
I have tested this on my GPS (CE 4.2) and PDA (Hermes) and it works quite well.
Gestures:
- Slide left to go to next photo in list (You can also use the wheel down for this)
- Slide right to go to previous photo list (You can also use the wheel up for this)
- Slide up to go to last photo in list
- Slide down to go to first photo in list
Hot Spots
- Top left to open a specific folder. Folder navigation is done by sliding up and down and select the <This Folder> to select
- Bottom left to open a specific photo. Again, you can slide up or down or go to a specific folder
- Bottom Right to start/stop slide show mode. Slideshow is 3 seconds. You can change the config file to specify different interval
- Top right to exit
- Right edge of screen to go to next photo in list
- Left edge of screen to go to previous photo list (You can also use the wheel up for this)
- Bottom edge of screen to go to last photo in list
- Top edge of screen to go to first photo in list
Configuration
CEPhotoViewer saves its configuration in CEPhotoViewer.cfg in the same folder as the exe. This file contains the last open folder and the slide show timeout
Startup
- On startup CEPhotoViewer looks for any JPG/BMP/GIF images in the program's folder. Else it prompts you to select a folder. Once selected the config file is created and subsequent runs, it will automatically pickup that folder
Bugs
- CEPhotoViewer uses native microsoft DLL to load a image. Depending on the speed of your CPU, this loading might be slow. Photos resized to the correct size (under 640x480) load pretty quickly. Large (2MP+) photos take a couple of seconds to load. Perhaps someday I will include native JPG loading codeDone
- CEPhotoViewer is built for ARM CPUs only. I can build for other CPUs but dont have a device handy

Feature Request
What do you think of adding in touch Pan, Tilt, Zoom, & Rotate? Also, it would be cool if it auto rotated based on the original pictures orientation.

Forgot to mention, pictures are auto-rotated if they can fit better in the screen. Also auto-rotates if you change the display (like when I pull out the keyboard)
Nice but it wouldn't load my actual (2mp) photos. Sliding is a bit slow but very smooth. Wouldn't quit and at some point all corners stopped working.

Loading large images is time consuming, sorry, thats the way microsoft has implemented JPG processing. The corners are not 'not responding', the program is still trying to load the image.
Im trying to compile ijl jpg library that can loaded scaled images, that way I only decompress the size I want

Guess I'm in the minority who resizes images to fit in PDA screen. Due to popular demand, I have integrated the IJG jpeg library to considerably speed up loading of large images (largely due to internal image scaling)
Also added edge hotspots to navigate images, rather than slides which are bit cumbersome
my personal opinion(i havent seen program YET):
any viewer, that cannot show gif/animgif/png/tga/bmp files is pointless.
it doesn't matter how "touch"-ed it will be.

It does show gif and bmp. Adding png is trivial (libpng can be compiled easily in CE, both PNG and TIF take about 100Kb each). My intent is to what cover 80% of the people would want.
Just tried it on my Trinity and, while the transition speed is nothing to write home about, the software works. Not sure if i prefer this or S2V, but it has to be said this is a nice application.

Could do with more space at the top when navigating folders, the directory path disappers under the "This Folder" button.

It shows your photo on the full screen, so screenshots are not of any use

The main goal of writing this app was to have it working on all CE devices (including GPS that do not have the .NET framework installed).
Also, there are more transitions than just the slides that are visible when you are in slide-show mode

I've just gotten myself a windows mobile phone. I looked everywhere for a simple photo viewer that could scroll through images by tapping on the left or right of the screen. I didnt understand why resco photoviewer or pqv or any of those other photo viewers didnt have this feature. It was so frustrating.
Also I wanted to browse folders starting at a pre-configured Picture folder. I didnt want the program to go scanning my whole PDA for pics including gifs and pngs for some other softwares.
Finally found this program and I'm really happy.
I wonder if you're still developing this program though? This thread doesnt seem to be active anymore. I hope you'll still continue developing this program.
If you're too busy, I'd be happy to help in some aspects of coding or improving the program. It really is that amazing to me.

Glad to hear that this application is working well for you.
I have not stopped development on this, added additional features like PNG, GIF decoding and automatic rotation.
This being a PPC forum, there is not much need for this app since there are multiple options (including built-in applications). I had made this app and many others primarily for GPS and other low end devices without the standard libraries.
I will update this thread with the latest version and also add other applications I have built (including native MP3/OGG player, simple shell, GPS dashboard etc), all totally skinnable and configurable
The program has been amazing. Loads huge pictures with no problem. It's definitely faster than Vito's EyePhoto.
But Coolsva, I have a question. Now call me crazy, but I want to be able to set it up so that when I click a jpg file in file explorer or total commander, it will open up in your photoviewer instead of the windows mobile default viewer (coz it sucks). What're the parameters to do so? I tried the normal parameter "%1" but it doesn't seem to work.
I'm glad you're still working on this program.

Just now landed at this thread after spending a while checking out google results for "windows mobile picture viewer". Coolsva's prog sounds very worth trying, but I'm wondering if 0.68 is still the latest release?

I was able to open HTCHomeSettings.xml file that is too big for Total Commander or notepad in my phone (59.3kb).
Now I have a tool I can tweak my Manila2D settings while on the road.
I did notice the soft buttons are not in English, but everthing else shows up as English.
By the way, I used UPX standard compression and got your file to 144k before I put it on my phone.

Have a look at the website and this app for some really good ideas to implement into yours.
The biggest problem I have with yours is that I can't browse the full file system.
Its a great start, and it sounds like you have a plan to make it a great piece of software.
It looks like you made space for the line numbers but they are not showing.... is that a bug or something you have just not completed?
An integrated ftp uploader/dowloader may also be really usefull...... So you can edit your website easily on the go.

I'm dropping my Kaiser and getting the TP2, should have it in a couple days. I'm just curious is anyone doing Web Dev form there phone. I find myself going out for meetings and discussing all kinds of ideas but never found an efficient was to make updates with raw XHTML editor and a good ftp program.
I forget what editor i was using, but the ftp in total commander never worked well for me for some reason.
Any ideas how I can go about FTP, and file editing to do web updates. I mainly work with xhtml/css/php.
Perhaps a simple photo program as well, doesn't have to have the great features of photoshop, but cropping and that kinda thing.
Any suggestions is appreciated,

I use Notepad Mobile. It's simply a plain text editor that's great for editing CSS, HTML, PHP, etc... Freeware.

For FTP, I use Resco Explorer 2008 - it's commercial and pricey (at $30,) but the FTP add-in works very well for me. Better than others I've tried.

I don't know if this edits in place remotely as I haven't tried that - I simply download the file, edit, then re-upload.
(I have no advice on photo editing...)
Forgot to mention - on the text editor, it doesn't feature syntax highlighting, auto completion, grouping or anything like a good desktop editor would. It's just a plain ol' text editor, but it works very well for what it is.
If someone knows of a more powerful editor, I would be interested in that as well...
Until then, it certainly gets the job done.

Thanks for both of those, I'll try out Resco Explorer 2008 and see if I like it. Also I only reupload files as well, don't think they have a true editor yet where you can ftp in and save on the fly.
I looked all over for a good graphics editor and absolutely no luck. You can get image resizers and stuff, but im looking to create buttons and what not, a gradient tool with a cropping tool.
