When installing from PC ActiveSync insists copy to main memo - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

With my PDA2K WM2003SE I had to option to choose the destination (main memory, storage card, extended rom) from my desktop activesync when installing. Now with my JJ ActiveSync 4.1 insists on first copying the entire files into some temp dir on the MAIN memroy of my JJ and only then it pops up the question on on the ppc on where to install (int, ext,sd card). Thing is.. if I want to install a 20mb prg there is no way i have enough space free on my main memory for that temp files.. Anyway of forcing ActiveSync to ask 'Destination' question on desktop pc instead?
Thanks

Only 9mb free Storage main memory. I CAN'T INSTALL LARGE PRG

ActiveSync first (or a .cab for that matter) first copies the files to the MAIN MEMORY STORAGE temp directory and only then, you are asked when would you like the program to be installed.
Since I have just about 9mb of free storage ram on my main memory, I am unable to install 20mb of so programs even if I want to install them on my SD card. Because the WM2005 installed always first copies to a temp dir on the main memory. that's stupid. How can I install large programs to my SD card if I don't have much room on my main memory then?
Help please.
Thanks

look for the cab file first, manually copy it directly to your SD card and run it from that location using explorer.
try reducing your temporary RAM by disabling all of your today plugins and windows startup folder, run your program, then set them back again.
how is it you are running on 9mb, i reset my device when it gets down to 15mb, and usually starts up with 25mb with SPB PP SPB Diary SPB weather and MS Voice Command all running at startup, so how is yours so low?
ACtivesync copy the cab file to SD if your memory is low. I installed many big (20 Mb) programs using it. The normal behaviour is to copy the file without question, then ask on the pocket where you want to install it. When you are low on memory, it ask me on the PC (as it was on previous WM2003 models) where to install, then it copies the file to SD. It usually fail to install, but you can then soft reset and run the cab from the SD.

Windows gone missing

I recently got a notice saying my device storage was critically low. I had no photos, word files or videos etc on the main device. Thinking the memory was being used by 'windows', I transferred my "windows" folder to my 2GB storage card.
Now I cant access any windows programs!!
Is there any way that I can retrieve this windows folder? And find out what is using up all my storage? Pls help!!!
1. hard reset.
2. probably temprary internet files or posts eat your space. Use memaid, to twerk registry (move all internet files to storage card)
2.a. mail attachments. - delete all unnessesery.

Trouble installing Tom Tom

Just got my new white Trinity w/ GPS & Tom Tom. When I try to install it, I get a low memory error and install aborts. I have 41Mb storage and 21Mb program mem free.
Anyone else have trouble? Can it be installed to card?
It can be installed to the card, yes, but I never had that problem, altough I have installed TomTom many times.
I got a lot of problems but not this one !
Is this the HTC version that is downloaded on their web site ?
CD that was in the box. They have a cab file to dnload?
Tomtom refused to install on SD
I had the same problem - and the option "install into default installation folder" was checked and grayed out, so I could not tell Tomtom to install onto SD.
I backuped my Trinity, cleared the internal storage, connected to Activesync as "Guest", installed Tomtom to the internal storage, then moved the folder \Program Files\Navigator to a folder \Program Files\Navigator I created on my SD card.
After that, I restored my device. All I had to do after that was to manually add a shortcut to the Tomtom application in my Start Menu folder.
This worked for me.
Cheers Stefan
(I installed Tomtom from CAB available on the European HTC web site: http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/htcp3600.html)
No cab file there. It is a exe that loads via Activesync. I get the same low mem error as with the CD. I have 62 Mb free. This is rediculous.
Gave up. The installer creates a temp cab in
program files/activesync/HTC apps
If you can't find it, search the C drive for *.cab and sort by date.
Copy that file while the installer is still open. Run it from the storage card. Worked fine.

Installing via ActiveSync vs Installing on Device?

Hoping you can help me out. I have trouble whenever I attempt to install programs on my Dopod D810 (WM5) via ActiveSync (4.5.0) on my PC eg., running an .exe file.
I always get the message 'Installation of XYZ.CAB was unsuccessful'.
I only ever get this error when installing via ActiveSync and am prompted to 'Select Destination Media' from Main Memory, MiniSD and Bluetooth.
Naturally, I always select MiniSD and although both the PC and device look as if they are installing, I always end up with the above unsuccessful message.
However, if I go straight to the root directory of my miniSD, I can see there the generated .CAB file. Now, if I run this directly from my device, the installation succeeds. (So, it's not a huge problem, just an annoyance if anything!)
I have no issues at all with running .CAB files directly on my device. I also have no problems installing via ActiveSync, provided the device prompts me for the Selected Destination Media rather than my PC.
Any ideas would be appreciated
This is a little odd, because the prompting from the PC ceased with the introduction of A/S 4- the cab file now copies over to the PPC from where you should get the 'Install to..' options.
Some old applications still give the massage on the PC in error- I have had this with a couple of SkyScape medical programs, and when that happens, the install does fail, though the cab file has copied.
I suspect that it is the 'Choose Destination Media' message that is screwing things up. A/S 4 should copy the cab file to the Main Memory, unless it is a large file, in which case, the installer should be hard coded to copy to an external card. If you elect to copy the cab file to the SD card, the installer on the PPC loses track of it because it expects to find in in Main memory, from where it runs, then deletes it.
Have you tried always electing to Copy To Main Memory, then selcting 'Install to SD Card' when the actuall install begins on the PPC?

Click to collapse
Thanks NeilM - I haven't tried that have I have next to no free space on the Main Memory....but I'll give it a go next time and select Install to SD Card for the installation.
I noticed that I get the selection box in Activesync if the application I try to install is larger than the available space in the internal memory.
And yes it fails to install no matter what I select, so usually I select the SD card, and then manually run it from there.

Moving Program Files from internal memory to Storage Cars

Hey Guys,
I have downloaded and installed some programs to my HD2's internal memory by mistake (I was a newbie). Now, it is full of programs and i am running out of memory.
I want to move all of the program files to storage card. I tried cut and paste. However, this time, wm gives error saying it cannot find the path for the program.
Is there a way which allows me to move files directly to the storage card instead of removing and reinstalling?
Thanks
a couple of programs are only installed in a subdirectory and linked from Startmenu to this folder.
No problem to move this subdirectory to the storage card and change the link in the startmenu. (using resco explorer, for example)
but if a program is using the windows-mobile-registry (or an own INI-File) you have to change all the items from this program - it's almost impossible ...
the best way - if you don't know how voluminous the program is - to deinstall the program and reinstall the program at storage card.
Thanks, I could not think also copying shortcut to startmenu folder. My problem will be solved, most probably, at that time.
Edit: I installed resco explorer, but I could not find how to specify shortcut while in start menu? Can you please help?
