ActiveSync jumps out of nowhere on my Exec - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Just sitting in a restaurant, no wifi, not connected in anyway to anywhere.. and the Activesync shows up ?!?!? Writing the correct last time I synced my device (which was this morning at home). WTF is this?

go to activesync app on the ppc
create a server source
enter a totally fictitious name and address
follow the wizard, dont select any items to sync
set the period to sync as manual for both
finish the wizard
open the options
delete the new server source
the default setting is to auto start and sync, by creating the fictitious entry it allows you to change those settings
deleting the server source retains the sync period settings

Simon,
I have done this numerous times when I had the O2 ROM. Now I have the IMate ROM, it works if I am not connected to anything, so that is good, for that is what I want. One thing I notice when I am connected through WIFI, active sync application on my Exec still opens up on the background. Are you having the same experiences with this setup or am I missing a setting here?

my active sync doesnt auto start AS at all anymore if i set the server source to sync manually, then delete the server source.
i use wifi a lot and it also doesnt start it.
there could be other reasons such as programs you have that auto update from the web when wifi is running, eg SPB weather. again, i set this to update manually.
what other programs do you have that require or use an AS or WIFI connection?

I think you are right. I forgot about Pocket Weather's update settings. Thanks.

ActiveSync every 5 minute

Hi, new to the form. This is a useful place!
Am with O2 Mini S, 1.5.70, AS 4.1, XP sp1, Oulook 2k3.
Does anyone notice AS runs every 5 minutes? I first tried the Add Server Source hack by WM5 Axim users, but didn't work. I couldn't find any registry entry that relates to the sync frequency.
Apart from suffering the unplug usb and wizzard freeze problem seen here. AS syncs every 5 minutes really annoys me. I need to rely on AS's tcp via bluetooth to use networking on the device and AS is heavy weight process.
So far, I have some solutions:
1. kill the wce* processes, which leaves the device connected (TCP stack still works, USB charges) but AS on the desktop says disconnected. Your wizzard's AS will still TRY to sync every 5 minutes, but it'll return quickly because the desktop ain't listening. But remember to double click AS on your desktop when you need to sync stuff again.
2. Replace the useless MS bluetooth stack with the widcomm stack taken from the Atom? Then use the PAN profile for connection. Disconnect PAN and run AS via bt from the device when needed. (But PAN on PC is not always possible as company laptops will almost certainly not allow internet connection sharing, never mind allowing you to have BT PAN enabled in the first place)
So afterall, does anyone know how to re-enable manual syncing? Some registry hack? AS 4.x is such a big step backward, I already have to disable firewall and VPN service from my company laptop when connecting, AS 3.8 was so much better when I was with an ipaq or SP3i. May be a sticky with enough post on it to get M$' to fix AS.
There are numerous threads relating to AS 4.1 and starting every x mins .... Please try to search next time....
Anyway, the simplest way is to create a dummy server entry in AS (On the mobile device) then when creating it uncheck all the "MAIL / NOTES / ..." entries in the advanced section. Once the Server has been created you can modify the server sync to set it to never.
For more info have a look through this forum for other threads on AS 4.1.
sorry if that has been talked about alot before, I suspected it. But I did a search before and couldn't find related stuff on this site, plenty of firewall/VPN stuff found which I also had a problem with...
The Add Server Source hack has been widely referenced in the dell Axim WM5 forums. As I mentioned, it didn't work for me, my ROM is very recent, as the phone is new for two weeks. I couldn't find any entry in the device registry that suggests it will run at any schedule! Although I can see peak time settings...etc but none of the scheduling options in registry.
Am really wondering if this is a problem with the specific ROM.
Yeah, I aplogise, am I bad, didn't read all your post....
Have you got any other apps that try to update regularly like Weather plugins etc?
I can agree with humps on that.
I've got a new k-jam and tried to stop AS4.1 from syncing when not connected to pc, by creating a fake server then through options setting it to manual sync.
No luck however as it still comes up in the list of running programs whenever i check
fix for constantly syncing when USB-connected
Sorry in advance if this isn't the right place for this.
I was so mad about Activesync 4.5 re-syncing during two out of every five minutes when connected via USB that I implemented a workaround that might prove useful to others as well. The result is that you can click an icon on your desktop computer and instantly change whether your handheld willl connect to its partnership for syncing or as a guest for doing other work (or just charging). Most of my data syncs wirelessly with an Exchange server anyway, and MightySync and PocketController function independent of the ActiveSync partnership. Ah, the peace ;-)
Here are the steps:
1. Change HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\GuestOnly to "1".
2. Export HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\[your device's partnership key] to a .reg file with name like "partnership.reg".
3. Create a batch file or script to stop WCESMGR, import the .reg file (regedit /s = silent) and restart WCESMGR. Name it like "partnership.bat".
4. Make a copy of the .reg file, edit it to *delete* the reg info (place a minus sign inside the beginning bracket of each key/subkey name), and name it like "guest.reg".
5 Create a new batch file or script to stop WCESMGR, import the guest.reg file and restart WCESMGR. Name it like "guest.bat".
6. When you execute "guest.bat," your device's partnership is deleted, and with the "GuestOnly" key enabled and no partnership found, ActiveSync will connect it as a guest without asking. After you execute "partnership.bat," ActiveSync will be ready to recognize your device on connection and sync.
7. Now, create a batch file or script that allows you to choose which .bat to execute, so you have one thing to click to go back and forth between connection types.
As will be obvious, I'm not a programmer AT ALL. I use pskill to clobber WCESMGR, and CHOICE.EXE copied form Server 2003 to choose connection type. It could be done more elegantly...but it sure works.
Only caveat: Later changing of syncing settings might require re-export of .reg key and recreate/edit of.reg-delete file.

Can't connect to the net via Activesync

Any tips? I'm sure I have everything set up perfectly, but it just won't download any web pages. Is there something i'm missing?
I can download my e-mails fine (Hotmail, and IMAP) but can't get any web pages open using eather IE or Opera.
Cheers
Try disabling proxy on your GPRS/EDGE connection first (take note of the settigns first). I haven't been able to do anything using Activesync Passthru.
It was allready disabled.
I've just done a hard reset, and it still won't connect with a fresh Activesync connection. Any ideas?

ACTIVE SYNC AND INTERNET
I've also had problems if my OUTLOOK inbox is set to my POP MAIL ACCOUNT (YAHOO). When I check outlook mail for some reason it connects.
Also--what are your connection settings to get to INTERNET for your GPRS and WORK settings unrelated to active sync?

hi
Well, matheprat im just guessing if this is right... but i have encounter this problem wherein i can't load any web page on my ppc..theres an option on tweaks2k2 where you can chage PPC IE as IE 6.0 Well It will not totally chage but it will make your browser pass like an IE 6.0.. just try and let me know if you've done it
Thanks for the reply. I tried doing the above, and there's no change, I still can't connect. Every time I connect the PPC to Activesync I get a message saying that it's unable to find a server assigned IP. Ive tried using a specific IP (my computers), and leaving it to obtain one from the server, but neither work. When it was connecting before, i set it to obtain an IP from the server.
I also can't update the weather info for SPB Pocket Weather, but I can check e-mails (hotmail and IMAP), and sign into MSN on the device.

XDA Atom - My GPRS connection start by itself! How stop it?

Hello.
I need your help since my Atom is lauching the GPRS connection without any instruction to do that.
I closed all the resident memory programs but still go on dialing!
How can I avoid the connection start withouth promptin it or only if I need it?
Thank You
Regards
There must be some program you have installed that's initiating it. I would suggest that you did a hard reset (after backing up your documents and contacts, of course) and then install program after program, testing a while after the installation, to see what the offenting app is.
same problem for me
Moved to proper section
Main reason
EMAIL - once an account is setup it will auto connect to internet for new email, default every 2 hours, but Windows Mobile do not disconnect GPRS after trying to get new mails.
ACTICE SYNC - if you have setup connection to EXCHANGE SERVER eg, google push server.
wil also auto connect all the time
Down side of Microsoft is that they didnt design to disconnect after trying to get email like Symbian(Nokia) do. so other manufacture will offer to design their comm manager to disable data auto connection but O2 & Quanta didnt go to the extend to offer this function back then.
Download NoData from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467813
toggle to DISABLE GPRS
this will stop auto connection to GPRS but it may stop receiving MMS as MMS also require GPRS connection.

Automatic Outlook Mail/Exchange Synchronizer [rk-OSR] [Latest Update: 15 OCT 2007]

rk-OSR version 1.0.10 Automatic windows mobile outlook mail and exchange active synchronizer.
Here is a application I developed for my personal use now sharing with you all for non commercial use.
I basically use this utility to check emails from multiple email accounts from my windows mobile device using the wifi, gprs networks
You can even perform Exchange Active Sync too!
Feature list
Works on windows mobile 5 and 6.
Can sync up multiple email accounts at multiple schedules setup.
Can perform Exchange Active Sync.
Connect using: Wi-Fi only, Wi-Fi if not GPRS, Manual Wi-Fi, Gprs Only or Existing connection(USB)
Switch off GPRS/3G after sync
Option not to sync during Saturdays and Sundays
Get notified on emails or failed attempts
Get notified with custum sound(wav files).
Keeps device 'Alive' till all the accounts have been synchronized.
Supports 'Silent' mode.
Supports command line initiation.
Supports one touch* email checking(one touch on the shortcut connects to wi-fi network and switches between accounts and synchronizes and then hangs up wi-fi)
Can be set to sync only if device sleeping.
Does not write anything to registry.
Does not run in background.(works on notifications)
You can uninstall the application from ‘Remove programs’ and delete the application directory.
Installation:
Install the cab file attached below
After installation launch the program rk-OSR from the programs and go thru each tab page to configure it and finally save the settings (make sure the Enable check box is checked) test the functionality if working properly. Then close the application. Now the sync should happen at next specified schedule.
*One touch synchronization: A Very good feature for people checking mail manually, so that you do not have to switch accounts and click the sync menu each time or start/stop wifi etc, just one click to do that now. You can also assign this shortcut to hardware buttons. The new install adds a new program icon called ‘rk-OSR-Now’ to your programs list. But you need to do the following procedure done before attempting ‘rk-OSR-Now’ shortcut.
You should configure the ‘rk-OSR’, and make sure it is working properly and you are able to synchronize your accounts properly.
You must edit the shortcut, rk-OSR-Now; add additional text “Now” without quotes. Basically your target should read as below
"\Program Files\rk-OSR\rk-OSR.exe" Now
Hope it is simple to configure.
I have been using it on TyTn with WM6.
By the way this is my first WM application!
Code:
Following command lines supported
"\Program Files\rk-OSR\rk-OSR.exe" Now ---> Checks the mail manually
"\Program Files\rk-OSR\rk-OSR.exe" Enable --> Enables the rk-OSR
"\Program Files\rk-OSR\rk-OSR.exe" Disable --> Disables the rk-OSR
Update: 1.0.10
Added better file browser to locate the *.wav files
Fixed the bug with the 'Wait time to Sync'
Email.zip is a sound wav file 'You got mail' (ofcourse female voice! )
Note: this application requires Compact Framework 2.0
You need compact framework 2.0 installed inorder to run this application. The compact framework is already part of WM6, so if your device is WM6 skip this step. But most of the WM5 devices do not have this update. So you must download here and run the installation on your desktop (then active sync to update your device). Only after completing this step install the application.
New: If you want 'Push Like Mail' support please follow the application link to rk-SMS Switch
How to info for rk-SMS Swich with rk-OSR here
If you like the application please show your support by donation on Paypal
Download from here
Looks like this post of mine pushed down too fast because of the WM6 release(Wrong timing )
So i am just bumping my post up.
Anyone has any feedback?
I have synchronization problems whith gprs connection and activesync.
I try it you software....
Thank you.

If you have synchronization problems already the rk-OSR might not work for you.
rk-OSR just schedules the outlook synchonizations, all the sync logic is on the outlook, not in rk-OSR
First you have to fix the problem with your sync, then only you could use rk-OSR
HTH
rk-OSR Update 1.0.1(One touch sync)
Please read the first post for the updated information and the cab file.
tytnguy - I'll try the app and get back here.
the idea sounds solid and do sync manually, so thx for the app allready
Keep up the good work in making life better for everyone
Update 1.0.2
There was a bug..
If you used Wifi to sync then any subsequent attempt to switch on wifi using the communication manager would fail(till soft reset )
Its fixed in version 1.0.2 now
I'm not sure why this app is not getting more attention, i mean syncing over wi-fi, isnt that what everyone has been cribbing out ever since AS4/WM5 came out??
neways, thnx for the app, will try it out..
let me see if I understand this app correctly before testing it :
At a given schedule it will turn on wifi
Synch
disconnect wifi
Right ?
What if im not at home at the time, so dont have wifi, will it default to GPRS ?
What happens to the schedule I have allready set in activesync ?
Right now i have just scheduled in active synch. So it uses either wifi provided I turned it on when i got home or if not turned on, GPRS.
thks

Question:
Hi there tytnguy, I've got a question:
I'd like to use your app; I have an exchange account for work; but for my private mail I use the Outlook Mobile. The problem is that when I set it to sync every 30 minutes or so; it keeps doing that during the night; waking me (an the misses) every time someone tries to sell me Viagra, Russian brides or weight-loss pills.
The times you enter in the "schedule-tab"; are those the exact times that the app will sync? Or are those the times between which the "outlook-Mobile schedule" will be active?
BTW: looks brilliant for a first-timer!

Sure, in active sync, in the email properties you can say check for new mail every 4 hours or2 hours etc.., and determine settiings for peek, and off peek days/times.
It then checks if i have new email according to this, using either wifi provided I leave it on, or gprs if wifi is off.

If its not, it goes through connecting to the net via GPRS
Im running WM6 by the way.

Setup VPN on HD

I am trying to setup a VPN connection on my HD device.
I have imported the .cer file and installed it. Now when i connect to the internet through lets say wifi, I try to connect to the vpn. It does nothing. I have put the vpn settings correctly. Anybody managed to get vpn connections working on wm6.1 ?
I've had my syncing over the air through my VPN for sometime. Are you trying to sync USB or over the air or both?
I am trying to use the wifi connection
Ok I managed to get connected to the work intranet with vpn connection.
Just a question, Is it possible to download my work emails once connected to the intranet ?
Oulook is set up to connect to an exchange server at work.
Any help would be apperciated.
I was able to read my mails when connected to the intranet through vpn connection using PIE ( webmail). How can I setup outlook to get them directly by connecting to exchange server ? Do I need a 3rd party application ? Any expert around ?
I'm not sure I understand your question, but I'll help the best way I can. Your company should have you set up with credentials to log into your VPN, which appears you're able to do. It sounds like your company also has an exchange server wherein you should have an account that stores your emails, contacts, calendar etc... Once logged into the VPN, your phone, if set up through activesync, should check your exchange account for new email. That's the only way I know of to fetch company email and that's the way my company has it set up. If that's the set-up you're familiar with, but are looking for an alternative way to get your company email then I'm not sure at that point, but would love to know if there is.

If you can log into your VPN correctly, and your company uses exchange, you can set up activesync to check your exchange server account by going into activesync->menu->add server and supplying your email address, username and password, server address etc...then hit sync and let it do its thing. Once you've done that, you will notice an envelope on your TF3D mail tab, which should say outlook on it and have all of your company mail. I hope that helps.

I am trying to download my work mails using GPRS connection and pocket outlook once connected to the VPN. Any idea how to set that up ? Thank you sean3
Your welcome...what I can do is show you how I did it, and perhaps that might work for you as well. HERE's how I did it through GPRS... And if I go over anything you've already done then please bear with me. I first set up my VPN in settings->connections->connections. I tapped add new VPN and put in all my of my credentials, username, password, host name, ticked PPTP, although your server maybe set up for IPsec/L2TP, certainly make sure which one. Then after putting in username and password and Domain I ticked advanced and ticked the "use server assigned IP address" and also checked Use software compression and use IP header compression. From there I hit finish and got out of setup, which took me back to the page from where I started. At the bottom of that page there is a "tasks" tab and an "Advanced" tab. Click on "advanced" and you should next see "select networks". Click on that and from the drop down box under "Programs that automatically connect to a private network should use:" choose "My Private Network". From there I exited connections and went to settings->connections->"Advanced Networks" and clicked on the GPRS and changed the protocol from "PAP" to "CHAP". My phone wouldn't even try connected to my VPN with PAP checked. After I changed this, my VPN started trying to connect. Ensuring that you've installed your companies certificate, you should be able to connect to your network. Once connected to the VPN, activesync will fetch your email if you have exchange set with activesync on your phone. I was never able to set it up while connected to my computer, for what ever reason I had to configure the server through active snyc on my phone. Once you have done that, hit sync and you should be good to go. Although I had to keep trying to connect my VPN over and over before it finally took.
Thank you again. Do I need to allow pocket pc access on microsoft exchange server ? I have done all the steps you mentioned. Whenever I hit Sync , activesync tells me : server is not reachable. Although i tried to ping the server from my PPC and it comes to be alive replying. And access to the webmail is possible so VPN is working fine. Any more hints ?
First, let's check to make sure you are connected to your VPN over GPRS. When you hit sync look at the status bar at the top of your phone. Press your carrier's connection icon, should be the one next to the battery icon or the speaker icon. A bubble should drop down showing your connections. If you see "My VPN", or if you named it something else, in the bubble then your connected. If your not connected, soft reset and try again. If you are connected then at that it may be a setting issue in active sync. What I did, in activesync, was delete the current partnership with Exchange under menu-options-delete. I then went back and configured the server again, this time checking the SSL box under server address. For whatever reason that worked even though my companies server doesn't require it.
Also, when you configure your server in activesync, you will be be setting up your poocket outlook. when you start configuring the server, the first thing it should ask you is for your email address, and then from there your username password and server info. You do not need to set up your pocket outlook anywhere else, to my knowledge. Once you configure the server with your email info and server info, and you get a successful sync, you should see an envelope in the mail tab on TF3d, and the envelope should say Outlook.

The bubble indeed tells me that NSN-INTRA ( Nokia Siemens Networks Intranet ) VPN is connected. However I did no try to delete the partnership with activesync yet. I get a red ! on activesync desktop saying Unable to reach the selected server. Note that my laptop did is not on the domain and I have no access to the intranet through it. Thanks for your collaboration.
Indeed, if your laptop is not set up to connect to the vpn then yes it will give you the red error. Essentially your phone is trying to sync with exchange, but it cannot get through via USB on your laptop. Now of course if you set up your laptop to directly connect to your VPN then your phone will sync properly. In this case, however, if you're looking to sync your phone with exchange via GPRS, then disconnect from your laptop. Do the rest on directly from your phone. Click the activesync icon on your phone, go to menu, options and delete any current partnerships. Then go back to menu, add server, and configure your server there. After you've entered all the email and server info, hit sync on your phone and see what happens. You may need to soft reset. That you have a VPN connection is good. Getting that is from I've found to be the hardest part.
