stopping running programs? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Okay, newbie question here, but how can I stop programs that are running without having to go to settings->memory to do so?

pocket plus
install pocket plus

Get a task manager. Get Wisbar. Get SMClose. Get MagicButton... etc.
Quite a few options, some free.

thanks all.

XDA II: Closed Applications Still Running In Memory

Open an application, for example, Internet Explorer and then close it.
Next, check out the applications running in memory:
Settings-> System-> Memory-> Running Programs
Internet Explorer is apparently still running in memory! Is this a known bug and if so, is there a work around as I would expect this to affect the performance.
Also note this happened before and after the ROM 1.60 Upgrade.
it's been like that from the first version of windows CE
i suppose that because of slow cpu and mem
and such ms believed that keeping the applications running
would inc the response time of the pda so they would not
seem slugish compared to palm and other pda os's
This is a Windows Mobile 2003 'feature'
There are programs available to close the program down completely.
I have my personal favourite, by far, and is completely free. I can't remember the name of it and I'm currently updating my ROM, but as soon as that's done, I'll look in ActiveSync and let you know.

Certainly one of the thing's that I've found since the recent XDAII ROM update is that closing apps down via the Tast Manager has caused the OS to crash out with the message 'A unhandled error has occurred in the shell.' type message (has only happened a couple of times). The only way forward from this is a soft reset.

Hi,
How are you trying to exit the programs that this happens to ? It could be that instead of clicking what you think is the close button, you are actually clicking the Today Screen icon ?
As regards Task Managers, the best I have come across and use all the time is PocketNav. Here is a link for it.
http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html
This app allows you to see currently running programs and flip between them with ease. You can also close or close all programs from this menu too.
Hope this helps.
Rgds,
Rob.
WisBar Advance
http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/wisbar
Highly recommended, very small memory footprint, very fast and highly customizable. Oh, and FREE. If you get it, make sure you download an XP skin. Don't use the bundled ones
EDIT: Just so you know, it doesn't officially support Phone Edition. To turn the phone on/off via the taskbar, you have to close WisBar to access the icon.

I'm just using the O2 Active Task Manager (the little arrow on the bottom of the screen) that comes by default with the OS (haven't got round yet to installing a decent Task Manager - will check out the suggestions made here!).

WisBar Advance is one of the better ones that I've used but I will not give PocketNav a go, as there is a HUGE problem with WisBar and the XDAII.
Once you recive a call and access a notification (missed call, SMS things like that). You will not be able to recive any calls after that, if you ring your XDAII from another phone it actualy rings on the other phone but the XDA II does not register the call at all (as though no call is even being placed!!!, no missed call, no error messages NOTHING!!!)
I loved WisBar untill I've narrowed the problem down of not reciving calls to uninstalling or exiting WisBar and doing a softreset and never had the problems again...
Most other task managers I've found seem to have problems with the Phone Edition, cannot hide the Phone ID Program, cant close the Phone after it has been opend, phone keeps ringing over and over a gain even though there is not incomming calls... all are a few problems I have found with other Task managers I've tried... I will give that PocketNav a go and see how it works with phone edition...
I have tested most task managers under Phone Edition and my conclusion is that SBP's Pocket Plus is THEone...
It actually let's you see the notification area just as it's meant to be and it let's you exclude applications so they don't close but minimize (perfect for IA_Caller_Id.exe)
Best regards,
Rayan
Do you know of any freeware ones that are worth while?

Automatic Memory clearance in K-Jam

I have used pcoket PC devices from the Philip Velo1 and even before that. I have never faced memory loss like with the K-Jam. The device slows down with time but when I check the running programs list I see a full page list. As soon as I close them all the device performs well again.
Is there anyway of automatically clearing memory and closing running programs with the K-Jam (WM5) after say 2 or more programs running?
Hi.
What you need is to read http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29863
and then install PocketPlus 3.0.1 . Problem solved
if you want to go fastter then read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30011
and do what it say's .
but like everything in life do yer research before you take a risk .
I did, and the results were great . 200% improvement in performance and useability.
Thanks for the response. By the way I have already removed the Antivirus software.
But how does the PocketPlus help?
By the way I have tried the latest PocketPlus and it still crushed my k-Jam on reset.

Check to make sure you have version 3.0.3 of PocketPlus as my K-JAM crashed every time with 3.0.1. It wasnt until i downloaded 3.0.3 that i was able to boot normally. You could also disable the safe mode feature in Pocket Plus options before you reset which fixes the boot problem with earlier 3.x releases.
EDIT: SPB Software now has a note on the PocketPlus version history informing that the Wizard specific issues with safe mode have been fixed as of v3.0.4.
http://spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/history.html?en
Pocket Plus has a feature where you can change the behaviour of the close button [X] so it can close apps instead of minimise or even popup a menu with more options. Have a search of the forum here, and over at www.modaco.com as there is heaps of info about Pocket Plus and other options for closing / minimising apps (some of them are even free).

Chris
SPB Pocket Plus !!
can you provide me a link where to freely download Pocket Plus 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 ??? i'd appreciate it ...
thanx in advance.
If you're buying PocketPlus just for the task/memory manager, have a look at the many free alternatives, e.g. WisBar Advance, VBar, MagicButton, Pocket Nav, GSPocketMagic etc etc. Several (e.g. MagicButton, GSPocketMagic) allow you to set exception lists so you get to choose what gets automatically closed instead of minimized.
That's the best way with the Wizard, as some apps need to be kept in memory due to the slow loading times from ROM, e.g. Calendar, Contacts and Messaging. For URLs, Google is your friend.
I actually prefer managing what's running in the memory manually. gives me a feeling of control. I usually leave some of the frequent apps running. stuff like calendar, phone, activesync, IE.

SafeMode: Which programs offer it & are WM5 compatible?

I require my VARIO to have the option to boot in SafeMode. So far I've done this with Spb Pocket Plus - but since it is such a memory hog I want to get rid of it.
So far I only found two tools that offer SafeMode:
Spb Pocket Plus ( which I want to get rid of )
mCubeSafeMode or SafeMode 1.02 ( not WM5 compatible, installed fine but did not work for me )
So what other choices do I have? What other ( hopefully tiny tool ) will let me enter safemode at boot time?
Help is appreciated. Best regards.
Slightly off topic, but do all of these programs provide the same form of "safe mode"? And if so, what does that consist of? Safe Mode is not an OS feature, so I'm curious what cross over there is.
V
Sometimes programs are unable to be un-installed because some parts are loaded, or maybe a newly installed program makes trouble.
So you simply enter SafeMode and are then able to un-install these "troublemakers". Since I try out alot of stuff I don't want to miss this great feature.
I'm not sure, but what I've noticed from Spb's safemode, it disables added today screen items and startup processes. There may be more that it does too.

Yep, thats what it does. So any chances that another program will do this?
There's a buzzdev thread about this. Someone posted a file in the last post. I didn't try it out because I have that feature with pocket plus, but you may want to try it.

If you use memmaid and look at services these 'programs' are moved to the top of the service order list, (therefore they are the first things the OS runs)... they basically have a small gui that says "you want to run safe mode" and if you say yes... they stop all the other services from starting, stop STARTUP items from running, and don't let any of the dlls load for today plugins.
The problem with mCubeSafeMode on WM5 is that services have to be certified signed to run in WM5, so even though it installs, its not allowed to run at boot time. I would have thought though that the un-certified builds on buzz/xda-dev would get around that?
I have a Jam now, no WM5 for me
Yep mCubeSafeMode would be great if it would only work with WM5 - but so far only Pocket Plus is able to do a SafeBoot on WM5 that I am aware of. I hoped I only missed another tool, but sad to say it seems to the only working version for WM5
SPB Pocket Plus
pocket plus has the option of booting in safe mode also

I know! Thats what I said in my first posting - but I want to get RID OF POCKET PLUS - that is the whole reason for this thread!
DreamBoxer: Are you running a certification-free WM5 ROM though? I actually talked to the mCubeSafe author about this, and the belief is services might actually need a Microsoft certificate, but he wasn't sure.... if it doesn't work with a cert-free ROM then I guess he was correct...
I had the same problem when I had a WM5 device I despirately wanted to NOT run SPB (too much bloat) but ultimately its the only one that had it...
You could install SPB and hunt around with memmaid and the registry to try and figure out how to just set the services only and remove everything else. You would have to install the service program, (maybe using memmaid) and move it up the service list to be first... in theory it should be do-able...

Problem with Removing Application

it seems my JAMin can not remove some applications like CA antivirus...
also i can not install VBruntime in my JAMin any Idea?
Going to safemode by SPB pocket plus 3.x
In the safemode you can uninstall almost every programs cleanly!!!
cause it doesn't load any plug-in when the windows start.
Although, now I seeking some program that can go to safemode in WM5 without use of pocket plus, but it seem to not have, yet. Because the pocket plus use a lot of memery, I don't like it, but I need it safemode function.
Or anyone have the safemode booting program without pocket plus, please share it hear.
thanx dude it works but my JAMin kills me when reboots, it takes 3 minutes

Not saving changes.

I installed a couple of programs over the last couple of days, Spb Weather and Launch Manager and when changing the setting or configuration the programs shut down and nothing changes??
Everything else is working on my wizard, has anybody else experienced this?
Both programs were installed on the storage card.
Spb weather has worked on my wizard before with no problems.

Hi Ixtana_ran, I developed Fantastic Bytes Launch Manager...
Could you describe the problem in more detail?
How much free memory and storage space do you have?
Are you running Windows Mobile 5 or 6?
Very strange... and I have tested Launch Manager on a Wizard before.
Hi Carolos, no need to worry the problem is with me mostly.
When adding new pages & shortcuts I was pressing the OK button top right of screen and nothing was saving? I have since found out that if I hold the right softkey it saves OK.
This is probably a side effect of task manager or what ever program I use to shut down programs instead of minimizing (not sure of its name,Doh).
Enjoying using your app, hoping it will allow me to get rid of SPB mobile Shell, Phone Suite to try and free some resources.
