Is my vibration motor dead / disconnected?

Hi everyone,
My Hermes does not vibrate anymore, there are two possible reasons as I see it:
1. I dropped my phone on monday, the battery cover came off and the battery fell out, the phone seemed to be fine after I put them back (most likely)
2. I upgraded from radio 1.18 to 1.27 (unlikely)
Those are the only two recent events which have happened to my phone, and as I doubt the radio has anything to do with the vibrator motor I assumed that when I dropped it, the motor broke off its contacts or something.
Things I have tried:
1. Upgrade to AKU 3.3 (previously running SA 1.35)
2. Downgrade radio to 1.18 again (no luck, back on 1.27 now)
3. Hard reset
4. Soft reset
5. BL 1.01, 1.04
6. Various combinations of all of the above
I have come to the conclusion it must be a hardware issue. I've looked at pictures of the inside of the Hermes but nothing is obviously the motor - could anyone point it out to me on an image? I'd like to have a look at it and if it has broken off its contacts, solder it back on, or buy a new one and install it if it is broken.
Also, are there any programs that can test the vibration definitively? It doesn't vibrate when I am rung or texted, even though the setting is to vibrate, and it doesn't vibrate when I toggle vibrate mode from the Comm manager.

i know that's not really of much help, in terms of fixing the issue. but i think it proves that it is some kind of hardware fault that many of us are experiencing. i've had this problem for a while now, and yeh, its very annoying, but I dont trust t-mobile enough to give it back to them to get it fixed because other than that everything else works fine, and in my experience if i get it repaired its bound to come back with even more problems

I am an electronic engineer so I'm not afraid to get inside either, if it is an obvious and easy-to-fix fault (wire needs resoldering or something) I will let everyone know.
Don't suppose anyone can point to a picture showing the motor could they?

The motor is on the back cover and contacts the mother board via spring contacts. It is possible that a sharp knock could flatten these contacts and stop connection to the board. This would be an easy fix - bend contacts back to original position and all you need is to take back cover off!!

I have fixed it - I opened up the case (just took off the back cover - this voids your warrantee) and it is located at the bottom. It has two spring loaded pins which contact the main board, and one appeared to be bent slightly out of shape. After bending it back I reassembled and everything works again!

A hard knock can bend the Vibrate Motor's copper spring contacts enough to make them lose contact with the board. In other cases contact may be poor due to some oxidisation on the contacts.
For those who are not worried about their warranty, giving those contacts a tweak back into shape would not be a daunting task. 4 screws on the back cover, remove sim card AND Micro Card and with a bit of patience ease off back cover. That's all the dismantling needed .
Do remember to line up the little macro toggle arm on the camera with its catch on the cover when putting back together. First time I did this I forgot, got everything all screwed back and then discovered the camera macro arm was not lined up with the switch on the casing. So i would check the macro switch is working before finally putting screws back in.

Some people are able to get the motor to re-establish contact with the m/board by giving the device a few sharp taps on the bottom edge. This can work provided the spring contacts are not excessively bent. Worth a try especially for those with a warranty for whom opening up would be warranty voiding.

Ahh...so that's why my Dopod838Pro is not vibrating at times...I knew it had something to do with the amount of times I dropped the phone...(lol) well, I will try this solution and get back to you guys.

dead USB bus, with PICS now! Someone can HELP?

I own a Universal for some time now and am happy with it. Last week my USB connection on the universal 'broke'. Now the USB connector is inside the Universal and I can hear it when I rumble my Universal. Can I throw awat my Universal now or is the some workaround to open my Universal myself and solder the USB bus? I do not have official guarantee anymore.
ps. Sorry for my bad English.

IF U WANT TO THROW...PLEASE GIVE IT TO ME...I WILL USE IT AS A SPARE...

i dont think he literally means he will throw it away, i am sure he will sell it as spares if he cant fix it. I have a exec for spares, if you want the mptherboard to replace the broken usb connector, or try finding the universal service manual and take the thing apart and see if you can repair it yourself

I would say it is worth to open to see how big is damage. if is clean cut then it is easy to solder another usb connector. In the Wiki suppose to be a technical documentation which will sure help you. good luck

I ve also went to a local AV-technician and the guy told me (after he tried some things) that it is not possible to fix it anymore. He said that IF I want it fixed, I will need a complete new motherboard. So I m a bit dissapointed now. But maybe you guys here can give me some more input if maybe there is still a way to fix it in a cheap way.....
Just a side-note: When holding the USB port onto the motherboard and putting a AC-adapter in it, I DO get a red led on the Universal. But he does not switch on or something.

Judging from your pictures, I think your friend is wrong.
If you are a able to solder and get a very fine tip for the soldering iron, you may actually fix it (unless there is something else wrong).
First of all, you need a new Mini-USB connector. This is easier said then done. One way would be to sacrifice a cheap mp3-player.
Then you solder the case of the Mini-USB connector to your PCB. Instead of trying to solder the 4 USB-pins to the PCB connectors, use a very fine cable (like the ones used for MOD-Chips on consoles) to solder each pin to the respective resistor (use a multimeter to make sure you use the right ones).
Finaly use some hotglue to fix the USB-connector to your PCB with increased resistance.

i second vma's opinion. being a electrical technician first i wud say out loud, by the picture very clearly:
THE AV TECHNICIAN IS WRONG, YOU DONT NEED A MOTHERBOARD. IT DOESNT LOOK BROKEN. YOU NEED TO GET HOLD OF A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN WHO WILL DO AS YOU SUGGEST
*you first need to clean off all the lead and make the usb area all clean. this way you will be sure which electric platings have been tempered. so that you will be more sure which usb pin need to be connected via wires, to the resulting end of the damaged plating.
*you need to get hold a mini-usb port as suggested, you can buy a cheap mp3 player or whatever. there is lots mini-usb ports available around. i suggest first you try an electronic appliance shop.
*and replace it firmly with the help of glue specially formulated for circuit board. you can buy these stuff in an electrical shop
*make sure to test there is proper connection, if you have replaced the platings with the use of wires to connect to the mini-usb pins. test with a ammeter.

todays AV-technicians are just part exchange guys!!! I don't know where you from but anyhow this damage can be sure fix. I suggest If you never have done such job then dont try to repair by self( Universal still one of the best PDA's on the market to screw it up) Find a guy which has experience (even it cost you little money) and those guys also know where to get new USB connectors.

I got one the other day. Very fine soldering needed as mentioned above.

By god that's been butchered! I guess your tv engineer friend had a go at it... and by the looks of it did more bad than good. Ok here's what you need to do.
1: Get a new mini usb socket
2: clean up that whole area to get rid of all the solder spatter clean it by using a soldering iron / desolder tool on any shorts and a small flat blade screwdriver to "pick off" and solder spatter.
3:solder 5 small (by small I mean 0.5mm pvc insulated solid core) wires to the connector you bought in step 1 approx 2" long for each.
4: Solder the connector to the board by the 4 side lugs.
5: Solder each wire to it's correct test point (shown in the pictures but the gold coloured circle - you can clearly see which goes to where) you may have to scratch off the laquer on the PCB with a small flat blade screwriver first. Also don't forget to tin each testpoint and the end of each wire first... and for that matter the same goes for the connector end where you soldered the wires to.

[Jan 15] [Q] USB Charge Data Port connection is finicky. Please help.

Today the phone fell from the desk with the charger cable plugged into the phone. Now it won't charge/make a connection unless the USB cable is forced to plug in at a downward angle:

If the plug is in any other way, the phone will not recognize it.
This is bloody annoying!!! I can't charge the phone anymore unless the cable is resting on something and I can no longer listen to music in my car (since the road vibrations cause the plug to move around).
So my questions are:
Is there a way to fix this by way of opening it up and soldering?
Is there a way to replace the USB port?
I'm tempted to just ghetto rig it by creating a "lift" within the port by way of a small amount of Gorilla Glue (or similar resin)...but that seems 'temporary' to me.
So here's to hoping that someone else here has had this issue (besides stupid ol me) and happens to have a wonderful solution for this issue. Also, if it matters, I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. So if you know someone that does this kind of phone repair, please recommend them me. Thanks!

Just by experience with other hardware, I'd say either something is bent/broke or the solder joints opened up (most likely this, and I hope it's not surface mount...). No idea how easy/hard it is to open up a HD2, as I've been lucky enough to not have to , but once that's done, should be easy enough to inspect the connector, depending on electronics skills.

i checked the phone with 3 different cables. same symptoms.
yeah...i'm guessing (hoping) it needs a resoldering job. i suppose i should start looking for pictures of the guts.

I have exactly this as well. No desire to open my HD2 up so I've just taken to lying my wallet down next to it when I charge, and laying the wire over it. It's really annoying to have to do, though.

Hello there. Sad to hear that you have got this problem. There is nothing you can do to fix it, yourself. I had this problem for about 2 months ago, when my HD2 suddenly had the same problem, and would only charge when the usb cable was forced in a definite way. The situation is, that the micro-usb "house", solved to the mainboard, is BROKEN from the soldering. Some of the pins, is broken off, and when you push the usb cable upwards, the pins will again make a connection with the mainboard, but when you slip, it will loose the connection...
I send mine in for a repair, but HTC said that it was my own fault. They would not make a repair, unless I paid for a new mainboard. You can see picture from the repair center:

So what can you do now?
You can open up your HD2, to see the broken traces from usb housing, following this guide: http://pocketnow.com/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked - But you will quickly realize that it's IMPOSSIBLE to solder the pins. It's VERY small, and it's not only metal pins, but also some kind of micro wires, 5 pieces, and you can't just solder them...
The disassemble of HD2 it's not that hard, you will though need to buy some tools.
To get your HD2 working again: Get a new main board. From where? Good question. I looked at ebay, and searched for a very loooong, for a mainboard, but it's impossible to buy one, unless you find a hd2 on ebay with a broken screen, and the mainboard is working, for some small amounts, and change the mainboard yourself.
I waited for about 1 month for a mainboard, but couldn't find one. So i simply bought a secondhand HD2, for a small amount..
I hope this helps to clear up some things. Just PM if you have some questions.

Sigh... bummer that HTC had to make the USB housing irreplaceable.
That photo is helpful. That's out of my league. I've never soldered anything with that small of a footprint.
I'm looking for broken phones on eBay. Looks like they are going for 100 bones.
I think I'm going to try this one cell repair guy in town next week. Apparently he's a soldering virtuoso.
If that doesn't work, I guess I will have to replace the mainboard with one from eBay and hope that it doesn't have the same symptom I'm trying to rid of.
I will let you know if the repair guy has steady magic hands or not.

Ah, surface mount =\ and the one in that pic actually lifted the pads themselves. If yours is anything like that pic, which I'll assume it's close, it looks like it should be possible to bridge the broken connection, but it will require a good quality temp-controlled soldering iron, fine tip, small wire, and excellent soldering skills. If the guy can hand-solder fine-pitch surface mount chips, this shouldn't be a problem.
The "fixed" connections would work, but wouldn't be 100% the strength of original. Some epoxy encompassing the connections and whole rear-end of the jack should strengthen it back up a bit.

So has anyone managed to fix this yet? Also, is there anything out there that can charge an extended battery without it having to be in the phone?

the people i brought my phone too was able to fix it. it took a couple weeks for them to get their hands on a new USB port (apparently i destroyed it beyond repair). once they got a new one, it was soldered on.
*one slight niggle though: it takes 30 secs to transfer 100MB of data to the phone.
they "warned" me that they were able to to solder one of the pins, so data transfer may not be possible. so maybe the port is now acting as 'USB 1.0'. thankfully the only time i do data transfer is when i put MP3s and videos on it. and the occasional ROM/NAND flashing (which i don't do anymore since Cotulla/DFT's NAND Desire flash).
so besides that's little set back, i can charge/connect my phone without having to worry about losing connection to my computer or car.
but to be on the safe side, i no longer charge my phone via USB. i have purchased an external battery charger along with an extra battery. its been pretty sweet.

I've just see this post, for a couple of bucks, I think its' 70 or so u can get a charging mat, that will replace the usb charging feature. Just an idea.

Congrats! nick2k Good to know that it's doable. By the way it looks more like a rust on the image. What these guys had to say about the probable cause of that?

pk2_76; Mats are using dongles, connected to a phone by the very same micro USB port. While it might reduce the number of plug/unplug events, which wearing off the connector, the dongle itself is quite bulky to keep on all the time, and also might interfere with the holsters and skins. I'm still hoping for a special back cover rumored to be available from HTC with a mat-like charging accessory.

Well I just got one of the mains chargers off ebay, waiting for it to arrive. My port's getting worse so I need it sooner rather than later. Word of warning I guess, treat the connection with care!

[Q] slight reception Wi-Fi

Hello, I ve a BIG problem with my HTC Leo (HD2). I bought it 2 days ago from second-hand. It has windows mobile 6,5. I tried login to 'marketplace' from wi fi but it doesnt work. I ve got 3 notebook in my house and PSP and there is connection with Wi Fi with all this stuff.At last HTC catched signal when I turned back HTC to antenna which was 30 cm from mobile. I losed signal when I moved HTC. I changed RADIO (from XX.XX.51.XX to XX.XX.50.XX) and ROM and installed Android SD/inROM. I changed BUILD many times and problems always was the same - no signal. Now I have STOCK HTC BUILD
OS version 5.2.21869
ROM version 1.48.479.1 WWE
RADIO version 2.05.51.05_2
This problem is still appearing. Please help me because i dont know what I should to do.

Sounds likely to be hardware related.
You could try a Task 29 & then a Energy ROM & radio from my Signature & see what happens !
Have you tried to set wifi to best signal performance and seen any improvement ?

I fear use the Task 29 because I fear Brick. Anyway, I can not find "Energy Dinik 23699 Nov24" download. changed the signal for the best performance and conserves battery power and can not see no improvement. Maybe to give up the phone for guarantees?

I think your wifi cable is loose from inside.
I have disassembled and re-assembled my hd2 2 times. one for cleaning the light sensors (coz the hd2 wud sleep during a call and not wake up)
second to fix the power button. some dirt got under the power button. now everything works well..
my point being. each time i disassemble i notice the wifi cable comes off very easily without much effort. but gps cable comes out if you apply enough pressure.
EDIT. i gave a little wrong info. no need to go deep inside the device. when you take out the back cover the wifi cable is just there. so no need to take apart the screen and flex cable.
also. check if you can pair bluetooth with another device. if you cannot pair the bluetooth or cannot find a bluetooth connection then its definately loose wire.

there is absolutely no need to go inside the device. when you remove the bottom cover, the wifi cable is visible.

well...then you can try servicing it in an authorized shop.

means its the wifi cable. (btw the wifi and bluetooth cable are the same)
since u dont have the tools. u might wana send it off for service or anyone else who is capable of.

ok. write yet what exactly I have to do with the cable after opening the phone?

there will be little socket on the wire on both sides. and the plug will be on the board.
when i say socket and plug...its actually very small.
so just push it place. whichever side is loose that is. remember. its the black cable. dont play with the white cable...which is gps cable.

here is the image of such a cable. its called coaxial cable.
the cable has the female connector and the male connectors is on board on either sides. one is up and the other is on main board (down)

and here are the male connectors marked in RED.
take notice of the orange area i have marked. BE CAREFUL that you dont accidently press on this area. the gold metal clip wil break very easily. this is the actual wifi / bluetooh antennae contacts to the cover.

Do I understand? Simply plug will put more strongly into the slot and should be good to catch WiFi coverage? And if that's not enough, and still will not log in correctly wifi what I must do. I want to know now to not ride to the commission sale after 1000 times

YEP. last night only collins521 was having the same problem. after he reconnected the cable his wifi is working in full strength.

VERY helpful posts regarding the WiFi problems--especially excellent with the informative photos. On a semi-related note, I've just developed severe reception (regular signal, not wifi) problems on a year-and-a-half old HD2. Signal quality has abruptly plunged recently, and after running exhaustive tests I think I can rule out any and all software/firmware related causes. A hard drop into the street while getting out of my car last month might be the culprit...
Anyway, getting to the point: Since the phone is no longer under warranty, and in similar fashion to your troubleshooting advice above, is there anything I can check in there which could be causing the poor signal reception, like the regular antenna coming "loose" over time or due to a hard knock (or two)? I can't tell from the diagrams you posted, and since I've never opened the HD2 I don't even know where the antenna is located or if it's even accessible for examination without totally dismantling the phone. Any advice you can give me? It would be greatly appreciated.
If not, perhaps I will start a separate thread (and I don't mean to hijack this one), but with the great shots of the HD2 innards along with your clear explanations, I couldn't resist seeing if you had a similar 'how-to' regarding the main antenna.

Is there any definitive solution to the usb-c port problem?

Guys there is a piece or tutorial that definitively solves the problem of the usb-c port of this device, I like it very much and I didn't want to get rid of it !!

However, the peice that went into the phone has quite a bit of thickness and felt if the phone were to ever fall on the charging port it would break the port and generally, I did not like the aesthetics of it, it was too thick. 3rd thing I considered was to DIY a battery case that would connect to the port and a cover that would be thick enough to cover the port and the battery case. Would then have an alternative charging method, like wireless or USB-C. I gave up on this as my port is fine as of now, since I bought a pre-owned phone, it's been working fine.
Currently, I only use an Amazon basics certified USB-C cable to charge the phone, I do not use the company supplied cable at all.
If you want to change the charging port yourself you can search on youtube you will find a video with reasonable knowledge on how to open up your phone and change the port yourself, like this one

there's none, you can fix it, but eventually, it's gonna broken again. The actual problem is the housing, it's put much pressure on the port so it wears so easily, especially when you're using your phone when charging, which most people often do even just for checking the notification.

In my opinion,
Change the port with the OEM original and replace that goddam USB cable that came with the phone,
That cable is the culprit, I use OnePlus dash cable

I was very luck to find a repair service that fixed the internal piece of hardware (I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil).
It took the guy approx. 2 hours to complete the job.
Note that he didn't replace the hardware, but fixed the original faulty component somehow instead.
If you order the OEM component from AliExpress or somewhere else and ask a technician to replace, it would take approx. 30 min.
After the job was done, the back of the phone was glued and kept strapped to the case with ribbons for half an hour.
Also I've bought a new cable, a highly recommended OEM one from Amazon. That was when the first signs of the problem emerged.
Now the fast charge is working again.
In the last few weeks of despair, I was applying pressure to the connector when attached to the port, by rising it or pushing it to the side, which only made things worse, since the internal component was absorbing all that pressure.
Don't do that. If the problem comes, try to replace the internal component asap.
One last piece of advice, don't charge and use the phone. Keep it quiet on a flat surface, like a table or chair.

I read somewhere so not sure of truths but.... the story said the problem was the fit being to loose and causing wear... The solution that the guy came up with was to put a small strip of cello tape carefully around the end of the USB c connector making the fit tighter... Seems like it could be a solution... I personally just keep changing the faulty bit.... The phones in a case so no need to professionally restick the back... Changing the part takes about five minutes

Hey there! OnePlus dash cable fits perfectly? Any issues so far?

I think there is no solution for this problem. I changed the usb-c board 5 times, the last one yesterday. I finally bought 5 more new, seemingly original boards from an Aliexpress seller, for about $ 16 in total. Here is the link to the article, for anyone interested:
