Wi-Fi and DHCP problems with Wizard - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I've been experiencing a strange Wi-Fi problem with my Cingular 8125 (using QTEK ROM 2.8.7.1 WWE). The device is programmed to support Wireless "G", and my access point is locked to "G only". I use PSK for security and TKIP for encryption. When I am around the access point, everything works great - I am able to surf at about 1 Mbps effective bit rate.
However, if I move to an area where the signal is less than 50% and then turn wi-fi on, I can't get a DHCP address. The device gets associated with the network (exchanges keys successfully), but no DHCP. If I program a static address, I still can't ping anything. The funny thing is, if I move even to the very edge of the coverage area with a DHCP address already acquired, the device communicates just fine. This happens both at home (Linksys WRT54G 2 running the latest OpenWRT firmware) and at work (unknown access point).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike.

I have similar problems aquiring a DHCP address.
Particulary bad the situation is at home with my Netgear WGR614v1, even with full signal strength.
But also in other areas like my office building (unknown WLAN AP) I tend to have problems.
Sometimes it helps to turn off/on WLAN a few times or soft-reset the device.
But I never have problems to use WLAN when I enter a fixed IP address, but as I change locations often that is tedious...
I have an imate K-JAM with current original imate WWE rom.

This is a me-too post. I just got my MDA on T-mobile US.
I woud look at the router and saw that it did assign an address for the MDA, but I still did not receive an IP (showing connected, with 0.0.0.0 as IP.
Me Too!
Same problem here for US T-Mobile MDA.
If I manually assign the IP address info, it will connect to my WiFi router, but if left to DHCP, then it will try Connecting.... and fail.
What's the solution?

i have the same (i think) issue with MN740 AP. I had DHCP lease to 2 weeks but chaning it to 30 min seems to fix the problem.
Well, I changed the type of lease from "get the first available address from the pool" to "static DHCP". This means that the AP recognizes Wizard's MAC address and always gives it the same IP.
It seems to fix the problem - now I'm getting an IP address instantly, anywhere in the coverage area. Of course, I can do this at home only - elsewhere I'm still out of luck.
It seems that this is a bug in the Wi-Fi stack of WM5, we can only hope that it get fixed soon.

MDA Vario Wireless-G disabled by T-Mobile
I saw this posting at http://hardware.mcse.ms/archive34-2005-12-253197.html that says that T-Mobile has disabled Wireless-G on MDA Vario. I think this explains why K-Jam owners can connect to Wireless G access points and MDA's can't. At the same forum, one of the guys flashed his MDA with a K-JAM rom, and that fixed the problem. I hope someone can figure out the problem soon and create an update(I wish I knew how to).
I have an MDA, and I can't connect to G-only networks. I can see them (I think this is because the device is capable of connecting to G networks), but I can't connect to them.

Off topic - Wireless - What am I doing wrong?

Pardon me because this isn't entirely a Wizard specific questions although I am able to replicate the problem with my Cingular 8125 (new ROM) 100% of the time.
I'm not a stupid person. I've setup numerous wireless networks for corporations and home users. I always use WEP or WPA and never unencrypted (no) security.
In most situations, the wireless router does NOT supply the DHCP to the clients. It usually comes from another DHCP server on the same LAN segment. Typically, this is a Windows server although it could be a DHCP-assigning device, such as a Cisco router.
PCs have no trouble seeing the wireless network and connecting to it and getting addresses assigned to them. For a while, I couldn't do this on WPA security but upgrading firmware and software on the laptops (usually Dell) rectified this.
With my Wizard, both old and new ROMs, I can SEE the wireless networks and connect to them but I can NEVER get an IP address. It tries and tries and fails and fails and eventually gives up. (Yes, the Cingular proxy is turned off)
Yet, at the airport or other public places with free wireless, I have no problems connecting my Wizard to the access point and surfing away. Thus, I know its not (entirely) a Wizard issue. Of course, these public access points aren't encrypted which could be one of the reasons but I doubt its the only one.
As a test, I just built a new wireless router with a SSID (other than "default") and security turned on (WPA) and let the router act as the DHCP server. Wizard connected in seconds and was surfing away. So the obvious next question is: why doesn't this work when the wireless router ISN'T the DHCP server? Other machines (laptops and such) have no problem connecting to one wireless router and getting a DHCP address from another box yet my Wizard cannot.
I've tested this with D-Link and Belkin wireless routers (consumer-grade).
I've seen other people post that they cannot get their wireless to work on their Wizard and while the fix may not be on the side of the Wizard, I think others may be in the same boat I'm in so I'm hoping that maybe we can compare enough stories to narrow this down so that we CAN use our Wizards wirelessly!

Confusing...
maybe you should try assign a fix ip to your pocket's wifi adapter and see if it would work. or just let the wlan security turn OFF on your access point to see what would happen.
i guess that the network protocol stack is slightly different between a PC and a PPC, which limit the DHCP request route.
I have just purchased the Wizard, aka o2 XDA Mini S, and use it with my Belkin Wireless Access Point (WPA-TKIP Enabled, DHCP & NAT disabled) and Cisco ADSL Router (DHCP Server) without any problems.
I have assigned the Belkin Wireless Access Point a fixed IP address however, but I don't think this would make a difference.
The other thing I found was that the Wizard would not connect correctly to the Belkin using WPA with AES encryption, but switching it to WPA with TKIP works flawlessly.
Well, I suppose its encouraging that others with the same wi-fi routers are getting this to work but its discouraging that I'm having so much trouble!
Fixed IP does work (therefore, its unlikely a Wizard-only problem) but obviously a fixed IP doesn't let me roam from one hotspot (home) to another (work) very easily.
Haven't tried it sans-security yet although that might just prove a point, rather than be a perminant solution. I have tried WPA-PSK and WEP with the same (negative) results.
I personally have found that unless I change the power settings for the WiFi adapter to full power, its hit or miss.
Never have a problem maing connections, geting leases, etc with it there.
YMMV though

prob irrelevent
i found that before i active sync'd. the wireless monitor on my wizard showed a strong signal from the router. then after it synced, it picked up an IP from the servers dhcp fine.
also for lightweight simple security i use mac address filtering on the AP

unable to connect to WLAN

Hi!
I do have problem to connect the device (o2 xda mini S) to WLAN. It recognizes the network, asks for the WPA-PSK key and then attempts to connect - but fails.
If I configure the device with a static IP this IP shows up during the
connection process after a while but the device isn't connected anyway.
If I use DHCP I get no IP ever.
I also tried a very simple 8 alphanum character key.
What may be wrong here?
I hope you get an answer soon, because I have the same problem. Enter the key, then no connect. I also tried it with security turned off on the router, no connect. This thing connected every time before 2.26 ROM update.
bump - having the same issue
bump
Hope there's a reply; having the same issue but I think it's router specific too. I am on Dlink DI-614+ and a friend of mine who has DI-524 (i think) has no problem connecting reconnecting.
if you figure out a way to get it to work, please PM me... I have not figured out this problem yet.
I might try to disable all of my router settings (WEP).. but that would only mess my already configured other devices up.
Stupid question, but is it a B/G router or is it configured to only do one of them ?
Well, I got it to work by disabling encryption and leaving the AP all open...
So, apparently the software has some WPA-PSK-related bugs
Same thing with 2.24a Mr.Clean. Open AP works fine, and any encryption messes the whole thing up. The connection is done, it even gets the IP - and continues to blink arrows and no data comes through.
Windows Mobile only knows TKIP but as I was using AES and wanted to continue using AES on the other machines I configured the router to provide "TKIP and AES". Well, this didn't work but TKIP only actually works now.
I've been having the same problems, could connect to unsecured networks, no problems. The thing would just refuse to connect to my home WLAN (Belkin 54G set to B/G), secured with WPA-PSK and TKIP data encryption. However, just updated the router's firmware from the Belkin website, and BINGO!!!! It found the router, I entered the key and immediately connected, fast too. Just try updating the firmware of your router!
I agree on the router upgrades. And some routers are just crap, sorry to say. I've had bad luck with Belkins and Netgears. Linksys and D-Link typically give me much less problems. You also need to make sure that you installed the registry settings to enable G networks on you device (of course)
I have a Sonicwall using WPA-PSK with no problems.
I personally like molski's tweaks to make the necessary registry settings on my device ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=58438
Hope I was of some help.

Cannot connect to the Internet

My wizard has found my home router and has a strong signal but when i come to use msn messenger or ie it will not connect.
Any ideas?
'When connecting to a WiFi hotspot from a Windows Mobile device, you first turn on your wifi then the tower like arrow appears in the Start bar. Near the tower two oppositely pointed arrows keeps moving when connecting. These arrows should stay stationary meaning the network is successfuly connected. If you try using msn when the arrows are still moving, you'll end up seeing the device has no connection!
Regards,
Carty..
looking at the wifi it is active. i've checked the settings and it has a valid ip address but still will not connect.
but the gprs for t-mobile will let me connect but it costs £££.
Is your wireless router security encrypted??
Mine is.
If I connect to wifi on my device at home, it will ask for my encryption passkey. Then I tell it to save. From that point I can connect at home no problem. Now if I re-flash my rom and forget to enter my passkey, my Wizard will recognize my wireless router, but will not connect until I remember to re-enter my encryption passkey for my router onto my Wizard.
This may or may not be your problem, but I hope it helps.
PS- I created a simple text document with my passkey on it and saved it onto my SD, so now all I have to do is copy and paste the passkey. Makes life much easier.

I set the network up and the only security on the network is MAC control.
It will not issue an IP address without a valid, recognised MAC.
My Trinity will access the wireless fine here but the Wizard won't.
Its issued with an IP, Gateway and DNS servers but won't access the net.
Same deal at another house where the network is WEP encrypted and the passkey is known.
I have the same problem. My Blue Angel works fine with WiFi on WEP, but my Wizard does not. If I disable all encryption, it works just fine. But I don't want to get rid of the encryption. Any ideas?

Can't connect to wifi at home?

Hey Guys....I'm new to this forum, and it's already been a great help to keep my wizard going!
I have a new problem, that I'm not sure how to approach...I'm using IPL/SPL 3.08 + 2.71 Radio on the T-Mobile version of 5. (I'm at&T tho...)
Whenever I try to wi-fi into my home network, it finds my network, and tries to connect, but never gets an IP address assigned to it. I know it's not a hardware issue, because I've connected to other networks in the past.
I'm pretty sure there's a configuration problem some where (I'm using WPA security, but I couldn't connect even when the wireless was wide open) but I don't know if the configuration problem is on my router or on my phone. Any ideas??
Thanks for the awesome forum!!
Can you get hold of a laptop or another wireless device and see if this connects to your kit at home?
If it does then you know you have a problem with the phone, if not then it's the wireless router.
Yeah, I have a couple other wireless devices that connect wirelessly to the network already + I connected my phone to my parent's wireless a few hours ago...so it's gotta be the router, but I don't know what I have to change. Any ideas?
I myself have the same problem, I can connect, and MAYBE look at one or two pages, my phone then loses the IP and never re-leases it from the router....I aswell have other wireless devices that connect fine(such as this laptop that im typing this on lol)
Phone specs:
Cingular 8125
TNT 6.1 Pro/with TouchFREE
IPL/SPL 2.26.olip
SIM Unlocked
I have the same problem. phone connects and gets an IP but as soon as i try to go on the Internet, it stops working and then eventually tries to dial a connection.
I wonder if a static IP address would work for these issues?
Could you update the phone's Wifi profile for your router to a static address instead of a DHCP address then configure the router not to lease the phone's IP address to any other device.
any idea where to set static IP/DHCP on the wizard running 5.1?
