Locating the databases under WM5 - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

When my device is synced with my PC I get a shortcut to 'Mobile Device' on my PC If I click on that I can see the whole folder structure of my XDA. However, if I go into the 'databases' folder there's only a few databases there...
Where are the databases for tasks and appointments etc...does WM5 hide them from prying eyes in case we try to acccess them?

they are hidden in open view - files in the root folder.

Databases...
So, are they viewable AT ALL (ie by using a 3rd party utility)?
Thanks

I use this:
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=152
Cheers

that won't help for WM5

Databases...
Thanks, brilliant! - Does it work under WM5?

Go for it...
Well, I installed it and it only show 2 databases. 'MSN moved' and 'MSN Contacts'
Am I doing something wrong here or does it not work with WM5
Thanks

Activesync refuses to synch 2 files

Hi, I synchronise my XDA II with two PCs, office and home, but having just had to do a full restore, Activesync keeps saying that 2 files are not synched and just goes round and round trying to synch them. It's the same on both PCs.
I've made sure no files are read-only but cannot work out how to find which files are causing the problem.
Any suggestions gratefully received.........

AT MS ActiveSync menu - Information Type - Files, when you use your mouse pointer, highlight the Files icon, right click and select Resolve items..., what does it say?
For me, usually when it does not synch properly, it means that
(a) I have files with foreign languuage filename that cannot be translated properly.
(b) your files stored in your desktop is not the same as the files in your device.
Hope this helps.
or maybe it's files being used by the pc or pda ?
activesync will not sync files being used
make sure no other programs are running on the xda
and no files from the my pocketpc doc is opened on the pc
I had the same problem, tried everything to remove the problem:
Checked all files in device and synchronisation folder on PC
Checked all Active Sync settings
Closed all applications
Tried time and time again
In the end the only way I resolved it was when I upgraded the ROM to 1.72
So basically my only advice it, Hard Reset or Firmware upgrade
Does Not Sync 2 Files
I too had the problem, but I think I may have got to the bottom of it.
On my desktop, after an unsuccessful ActiveSync, I noticed that my recycle bin contained 2 files that had not been there before. They were TomTom files. If I immediately did another Sync, all files were synced correctly.
But, next time I used TomTom, ActiveSync would report that 2 files were not synched, and another pair of TomTom files appeared in the Recycle Bin.
I don't know a cure, but at least I know I am not losing any data.

Well, there's one more thing you can try - and this is also what got rid of the problem for me: synchronise, then disconnect the device, run File -> Delete Partnership from the desktop Active Sync, allowing it to delete the synchronised files. Then check C:\Documents and Settings\<your account name>\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles and make sure there is no directory with your partnership's name - delete it if it still exists.
Now just reconnect your device and create a new partnership. ActiveSync will copy all "to-be-synchronized" files from the PDA to your PC, so no data is lost. The problem, however, will be gone - at least it was for me!
Cheers, Daniel
re:
I had these problems a couple of times when i hard reset my xdaii, the 2 culprit files are the westekk PPT and pdf. Its easily identified on the file explorer ion the xda2, its icon is not valid (no programs associated).
try deleting these 2 files and see. worked for me.

alternative way to backup contacts?

Hi
Just got this thing the other day (O2 XDA Mini S) and am pulling my hair out with ActiveSync. A google and a look round these forums convinces me I'm not alone.
I'm now at the point where notes will sync, but Contacts and Calendar will not. This appears to be most likely because I'm not using an Exchange Server.
I give in. Can anyone advise whether this some alternative to ActiveSync that I can use to back up my contacts list? I'd hate to have to do it all over again.
I have a memory card, so adding software from that is no problem if necessary.
Thanks
You can try the backup tool Sunnysoft
in advanced mode is an option Backup PIM databases

Are you just trying to sync with your pc over the usb link? You don't need Exchange Server for that - it sync's with Outlook directly. Have you set up what information you want to sync in ActiveSync's Tools->options?
Another possibility for not syncing is any firewall you are running - although, if it was that, you wouldn't even get Notes to sync.
John
yup
Thanks for that John, yep I've done all I can see that I need to do. Missing Exchange was about the only thing left I could think of. I think I might uninstall Outlook and reinstall it to see if that helps. Though I *hate* having to install that POS just so I can backup some settings !
Perhaps there's somewhere within the phone that will export the various settings somewhere. Or perhaps I should dig out VS2005 and attempt to write one myself. Backing up to storage card would be the best option I think, and from a look around the .net mobile CF, it would appear to be pretty well supported.
And I had to disable Zonealarm despite having all the appropriate configurations set up to allow it. I even put 169.254.x.x in the trusted zone, to no avail.
ActiveSync is a shocking piece of software - and I know from owning other phones that there's things like MobiExplorer and MobiManager that tends to work much better than the usual manufacturer-supplied stuff.
Chak, thanks for the lead with SunnySoft.
Copy the pim.vol file from the root directory of the device. This contains all your pim info (contacts, call history, tasks, calendar). You can't really make anything out of it if you try to view it, but when you hard reset, you can just overwrite the new one and soft reset to restore everything. I copy mine to my storage card every time i add something new that has to do with pim stuff.

in my case, pim.vol file is protected, so copying & replacing it after hard reset does not work. i have other workaround for backuping contacts (as my activesync with outlook simply does not work) - each contact via irda to computer. it saves contact as .vcf file that you can send to wizard back again after hard reset.
Try using total commander to get to the file.
I yust transfered the file via email inside my home WLan to the PC.....
Hey, is this a common problem for HTC devices or Windows mobile in general?
I just started searching because my calendar won't sync. (3 palm devices and 3 pda's later, I have 1,400+ contacts.)
Are there any workarounds that anyone knows?
I tried setting up the sync settings whilst the device was disconnected, but the calendar entry just disappears when I re-connect.

Thanks eva_d, I had already hit on the idea of bluetoothing all my contacts over (thankfully, there's not that many) from my nokia 6600. Luckily, the XDA didn't require my SIM to be in it during the transfer. It even took over the mini pictures I had for some of the contacts, quite smart.
But it would be some chore with more than the couple dozen I had.
I'm reading up on the windowsmobile classes in dotnet, I reckon the answer would lie in there somewhere. Writing an app in VS to back things up to some funky open format would be the ideal, even if it does just drop a directory full of VCF files for example.
Once I'm sure VS2005 is installed and working correctly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41155), I'll throw some serious effort at it.

copying contacts to other handset is bit risky, because various producers are using various interpretation of .vcf file format. for instance, when i copy contact from siemens s65 to wizard, email field is always ripped off the contact and polish national characters are also absent. copying contacts to computer via irda is quite safe, however personal ringtones assigned to contact and voice dials are sacrified. all other data within a contact are still present, including contact picture.
A bit more info on the missing calendar link:-
I have one laptop using activesync V.4.1 this was where i first discovered the problem.
Just tried laptop #2 running a/sync v.3.7.1 which has an older copy of my appointments in outlook. Calendar doesn't sync to this either, so it must be something inside the MDA.
Tried to search microsoft support to find a solution, but no entries found. This seems to indicate that it is a HTC issue. I had a MDA Pro briefly sync-ed up which worked Ok. The problems are with my MDA compact running WM2003.
pim.vol not only saves the contact but also the assigned ringtone and pic. only way to do it is copy to storage card.
then after hard reset it won't let you overwrite the new one but if you rename it to pim.vol.old it lets you do that. then you can overwrite it.

contact pictures are NOT saved in pim.vol. when i restore contacts via irda from .vcf files on my laptop, pictures are already there.
I know this thread has moved on a bit, but I've just got my calendar to sync. again and I'm soooo relieved!
Take a look at this forum to find out how:-

Look at 'Cannot get calendar to sycnhronise' and the second reply.
Backing up the Contacts with Mail2Web Live Mail Service
I basically use the mail2web live mail service, and use its exchange server as the server source in Activesync. I only choose synching Contacts with this server (but you can choose others).
This way, all my contacts are always up to date in mail2web servers, and even if I need to hard reset, I can reget all of my contacts back very quickly.
Highly recommended...

Getting activesync to transfer files

Hi, I am not normally a software developer (normally a web developer) but I have written a program in vbs which I need to be able to send files via activesync to my PDA. I have asked around and no one seems to know of a way to do this in vbs. Does anyone out there know of a way to get activesync to transfer a folder to the phone without having to litterally drag and drop the files your self. It would be great if there was a way I could call an exe to transfer the folder e.g.
activesync-transfer.exe "the directory to take files from" "the directory to put files in on the phone"
Or if there is a function in vbs it would be even better. As I say I have never done anything like this before so I am really needing some help. Any ideas, no matter how wacky appreciated. Thanks in advance
Jamie
whats wrong with copying the files normaly using explore in activesync or using mobil devices in my computer?
Er, would you really like to your application which is designed to store data and export it to your PDA to pop up saying: "BTW, I've no idea how to program this part so could you just open up that slow old program called active sync, hit explore and then browse to this directory and then copy the files to this directory from this other one"? Not really, I would like this process to be automated if possible.
Please if anyone can help, let me know.
You can copy a file from desktop to pda with RAPI and the
CeCopyFile() function to create a file on the pda.
Then open the file on the desktop and copy the content
to the new pda file.
Houser
Er, sorry if this seems a little ignorant of me. Is this a vbs function? As I said earlier I'm not the most experienced desktop programer. Thanks for your help.
Jamie
I am C++ programer. This is a ActiveSync Remote API function. I think you can call this function from vbs with some work but I do not how, dont have knowledge with vbs. sorry.
Houser
Another way could be to use the ActiveSync file synchronisation.
You can configure ActiveSync to sync a folder on the desktop with
one folder on the pda.
So your vbs app must only copy/create files in the desktop folder
and AS will sync them to the folder on the pda.
Houser
I was doing this for a bit but not many people have it set up and not all devices support it. In the end I used Microsoft's Cecopy and other apps from their Windows Mobile Power Toys to do it. However, I can't distribute these EXEs with my software as they are copyrighted by microsoft. If you ever hear of any freeware EXEs that do pretty much the same thing please let me know.
I need two apps:
Cecopy - copies files to and from the device (including sub directories)
RAPI_Start - starts files on the device
Thanks

Is it possible to synchronize Files with ActiveSync to MicroDrive?

I would like to be able to synchronize some file folders automatically to my Athena but have them copied to My Documents on the MicroDrive rather than in Main Memory. I have searched on the Forum and the Wiki and tried to do it but I have not found a way to map the ActiveSync File Transfer option to the MicroDrive. If I delete My Documents in Main Memory ActiveSync simply recreates it. Has anyone managed to do this?
Not sure, what I do know is that my pictures are saved to the microdrive. In My Documents/Pictures, and when I sync all the pictures, videos on my microdrive get transfered to my pc.
I tried the file sync, option in activesync, but no joy, it syncs from ameo my documents but not the microdrive my documents, sorry I don't know

not a big problem ...
you could use MobSync for this.
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=985
I have found that this normally works, but this will move and sync ALL folders under My Documents.
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
Mofify\Create the following:
String Name: FileSyncPath Value: \MicroDrive\My Documents
Ensure that you create a root folder on your Microdrive named: My Documents.
Let me know if this works for you.
Thanks

Thanks. I am trialing MobSync, and as you say it seems to do the job. Interesting review from a user of MobSync who had trouble getting it to sync the most recent version of files and he was recommending ACiD Sync, but unless the standard version comes out with the ability to sync sub-folders I will stick with MobSync.

New HD2 owner with a few teething problems, please help.

HI,
I'm new to HTC and Windows mobile having come from iphone. I have a few teething problems and could do with some assistance. I have searched the forums but can't quite find the answers I'm looking for.
I've synced my Gmail account but it won't retrieve my old mail, how do I do this?
How do I find files that I have dragged on dropped into the "my documents" folder on my phone. I've dragged a folder of documents inc. word docs, excell and pdf's but I can't find them on the phone. How do I open these files using excel etc on the phone?
How do I add personal ringtones for my contacts?
I have read somewhere on here about an issue when making/receiving calls where the screen turns back on and your ear starts pressing all sorts of buttons/apps, has there been a fix for this and where do I find it as my phone has been doing this?
Cheers
I've figured out how to add personal ringtones, so that question doesn't need answering now.
to recieve old emails on your gmail account you need to change how far back you would like mail retrieved. this option can be found like this
email tab, any email account, press inbox, press menu, press tools, press options
now choose the account you want to edit
pick send/recieve schedule
now you can amend your sync settings
to assign a ring tone to a particular contact:
press start, press contacts, pick the contact you wish to edit, press menu, press edit
now find the ringtone field and add the tone you desire
As for finding editing files you should download a file explorer, total commander is popular and free
Resco explorer is better (my opinion only as its more finger friendly) but is not free
hope some of this helps

Yes, big help, many thanks. Is it possible to set your email accounts so that everytime you go into the email it automatically checks for new mail rather than going into the menus and pressing send/receive? I've figured out how to change how often it checks for new mail, ie every 15 mins etc, but I would also like it to automatically check for new mail if I go into my emails
Does anyone know about the screen coming on whilst taking a call issue?
Having more problems with Gmail. The advice above worked for my inbox, but on my googlemail on my laptop I have different folders for different mail. I can't get these folders to sync with the HD2. I tried the same as above but no joy. Any help?
There should be an option for manage folders in that tools menu, where you can pick which folders to synce (I had to add one of my hotmail folders this way) should be the same for gmail I think.

How exactly do you drop to "my documents"? Do you drop to Computer\HD2\\\My Documents using the Windows explorer, or using other methods?
Normally you don't need to search for a file. Drop a Word document somewhere? Open Word, and File Open lists all the Word documents no matter where they are. Most applications have this type of pan-location file-open dialogue.

This is a (stupid) limitation of the WinMo file system
Pocket Office programs only look in the 1st tree branch of files on a storage card- so files in Storage Card/My Documents will be listed, but files in any My Documents subfolders won't.
Files in main memory can look one level lower (ie My Documents/Business)
So, if your files are smallish in size, you may be better to store them in main memory as long as you don't have more than one level of My Documents subfolders.
Another option would be to create a shortcut to the folder holding your files in File Explorer. Tapping file names direct from explorer opens them in the linked program.

That is a strange limitation. Perhaps they may address this issue with winmo7?
How do I create shortcuts, do I do this on the phone, or active sync on the laptop?
It's a bit of a kludge, but if you decide which folder you want to create the shortcut for, navigate to that using File Explorer on the HD2, then Tap/Hold on the folder name and select Copy from the context menu
Now navigate to My Device/Windows/Start Menu/Programs; use the keyboard to move the cursor to any item that isn't a subfolder, and then go Menu/Edit/Paste Shortcut. This will place an entry in Programs pointing to your subfolder, called 'Shortcut to...' You can rename this to remove the 'Shortcut to..' bit, or call it something more representative.
Once it's in Programs, you could then assign one of the 9 program shortcut tiles on the home page to this shortcut. Executing it will open File Explorer at your subfolder, from where you can open any of the files.

Ok so did exactly what you said and I get an error message saying
"The file "x" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. IF the problem persists try reinstalling or restoring this file"
What do I do now?
Also how do I remove things from the start menu?
If you press the Windows hardware key, can you see your new 'shortcut' there? If you press it, do you get the same error message?
It might be that the HTC Sense shortcut can't open a folder- if so I'm a bit stuck for further ideas! You could look at a program called Launchpad . This installs itself as a program launcher and is opened by pressing the top left of the taskbar- it has a number of configurable shortcuts, which can include folders and subfolders. At $3.99 it is an excellent program, though I appreciate it is a bit rich to expect to have to pay for something that ought to be in the default OS
[Edit: I wrote a review of Launchpad Here ! ]

OK- must be a limitation of the system! Works OK with Resco File Explorer rather than the built-in one!
Might be worth a look at Launchpad- it does make life easier for a lot of program or settings launches

If there are no existing files for that program, Pocket Office will start with a new blank document. You only see the list once there is at least one existing file.

Thanks, didn't realise that. HOwever, it still won't recognise files probably due to the subfolder system mentioned by NeilM. I will try adding the files to the business folder later and see what happens
