Which HTC Universal Radio version is the best? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Currently,
I'm using the Radio version 1.04.20 on my Dopod 900 (HTC Universal). However, my reception is not too good and it usually takes some time for my phone to catch on with the network after a hard/soft reset.
Can anyone recommend which Radio version is the best so far, in terms of reception strength and stability?
Many thanks!

If you don't use Universal while driving, change to 1.08.00, otherwise stay as you are (this is my opinion).
1.08.00 seems to have some problems with the handover between GSM cells.

using 1.6 without any pb at the moment

1.08.00 gave me problems switching between WiFi and GPRS connections only remedied with soft resets, blah...I went back to 1.06.

I just upgraded to 1.06.00. There is less delay in connecting when I answer the phone.

I see. Many thanks.
So it seems that Radio 1.06.00 is the most stable then?
Another question, the updates for Radio version, are they all generic for all HTC Universal sets, or must I find one specifically customised for my Dopod 900?

Hi,
You should be able the flash the rom into your Dopod without any problem. I have an Exec and have flashed the radio rom (1.06) last week that come from T-mobile in Germany. Nothing to complain about it yet! Works great! Check out the below link. You will be able to download the radio from there and lots of FAQs in there.
Hope this will be useful for you!

Interestingly, I would say that I've noticed the opposite with regard to data - 1.06 seems to drop a data connection on the move, more than 1.08.

I'm running the LVSW Edition of WM6. I have radio 1.34.00.10 and seems to run fine though not had the OS installed long.
Would like to try radio 1.35.00.11 but cannot seem to download from xda ftp. Can anyone point to another source for this radio rom?
Cheers

Are you trying this site for the ftp (Hermes Uploads)? ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Hermes.
Or this one ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Hermes/Extracted_Radio_ROMs/
Both started downloading ok for me.
Why do you want to upgrade from 1.34.00.10 to 1.35.00.11? From what I've read in some of the other threads the only benefit the 1.35 radio has is that it is GPS enabled - not much use because the Hermes is no good for GPS.
I've made the above statements from paraphrasing others because I haven't compared these radios and don't need GPS - so I'll be happy if others correct me.
Maybe a bit of reading (probably lots really ) could save you the time of an un-necessary upgrade - but probably finding the info will take longer than flashing the rom!!!
so your saying that there is no need to upgrade my rom....
There is benefit for me in doing so?

Excuse me, but the Hermes is gooed for GPS. The only thing is that our Hermes-gods are working on an antenna. The antenna is not (yet) connected to the 'GPS-chip'. GPS worls, but there is only a weak signal.

Does your Trinity/Dopod drop calls regularly?

My Dopod D810 from 3 drops calls regularly.
I think every single call will drop out after about 1-2 minutes. I also notice that when my phone is 'warm' from charging or other uses, the call can drop as quickly as 10 seconds into the call.
Initially it was suggested that the drop outs were due to my Phone > Band selection being set to 'Auto' but I have since changed this to Network Type=WCDMA and GSM/UMTS band=UMTS(2100+800).
But now I'm more inclined to think it has something to do with the device's temperature....
Any other ideas other than taking it back to 3?
Try changing the Radio ROM.
I had a similar problem after changing my Radio ROM from 1.41.00.11 to 1.46.00.11. Now I`m using 1.46.30.11 version and everything is OK. I even noticed a GPS signal level improvement.
I have the similar problem too. I m with 3 Australia. Upgraded to WM6 official ROM, still observing if call drop still happened.
If not, will take back for warranty repair
I am using a HTC-branded P3600 with the official HTC GPS-enabled WM5 ROM on the Vodafone UK network. With reasonable approximation I can say that I have 0 dropped calls (including calls made or received while in car).
My network type and band selections are both "auto".
Sometimes I make calls while the phone is charging via USB from a laptop (which makes it rather warm) but I haven't noticed any dropped calls in that situation either.

Excellent idea. I'm currently using Radio version: 1.35.00.11...if I go to 1.4x - are these compatible with WM5?

I`m using a WM5 LVSW edition. Used it with 1.41.00.11 for 3 months without problems, changed to 1.46.00.11 for 2 days and encountered call drop issue, changed to 1.46.30.11 and not even a problem so far.
I am using my trinity with 1.41 and WM6 (AX3L) and I really never drop a call unless I step into an elevator. I am usually on UMTS or HSDPA living here in NYC and cannot complain about my service nor the phone.

Thanks for all the replies. Went ahead and upgraded ROM and Radio version to 3.00.707.16 and 1.46.30.11, respectively.
So far, no problems with call dropouts but I haven't made many long calls on it over the last 2 days but will keep assessing.
On the previous incarnation, I had also installed/uninstalled a LOT of programs over the 6 weeks I had had the phone so perhaps that contributed to the phone's instability too...
For me, it kinda worked the other way around...
I never experienced any call droppouts when I still had the original WM5 ROM with radio version 1.33.30.10 on my Dopod D810. (I'm with 3 in Australia)
After upgrading to the ANZ WM6 ROM with radio version 1.46.30.11, I can sometimes not even establish a connection as the call is dropped after the first ring or so. The other day I had to make a call 5 or 6 time to finish the conversation...
Is anybody else having similar issues AFTER upgrading?
Hi guys,
good to see that i'm not the only one that have call drop regularly.
Well, in fact, those are not always call drops.
Sometimes i miss calls and some other times, when i want to make a call, i see that my trinity's loosing the signal and starts to search for networks. Then i have to switch off the phone through the Connection Manager, then turn it on again so that i can make phone calls.
Are you experiencing the same on your device?
I'm still using Radio ROM 1.38.00.11
Do you guys have a link where to download the latest Radio ROM so that i can try it on my Trinity?
Thanks.

Yep, I experience drops after upgrading... But the strange thing is... even after downgrading to the shipped rom... still drops... ARRGHHHHHH
I'm just going to try another rom I think... not sure yet. Have switched my band from auto to fixed. First gonna see what happens.
Some said it is due to 3G/3.5G trying to establish a data connection (most likely for push mail) and in doing so the phone function is disabled. I did not verify this claim.
If anyone wants to test it, you might want to try:
1. disabling 3G and 3.5G
2. disabling data connection
and tell us the results!

I will disable HSDPA. But I cannot disable my data connection because that's THE reason I bought my device for (using it for pushmail but I can use that with UMTS/GPRS connection also, don't need HSDPA for it).
I have found if I have network on AUTO i cant make calls, phone call drops straight away.
Switching to GSM allows me to make calls, but then I have no 3G
Found that radio rom 1.46.00.11 has no calls dropping for me. So I'm gonna stick with that one.
Cheers.

I have this ROM actually installed in my Trinity, and i still have call drops regularly
Once more today, it started to ring, then lost signal.
I'm wondering how much people has the same issue.
I used to have the same problem. I've reflashed my phone so many times coz of that.
But it seems like my problem's finally fixed
I'm using the most updated PDAVIET wm6 rom with Radio: 1.50.08.11
Been using that for about 2 weeks, haven't had a call drop since.
However I have had a few hangs here and there.
I run a lot of apps so the memory is pretty low most of the time. Yet for some reason I'm not getting any call drops so I'm happy. (Finally able to talk for like 15 mins without breaking up)
just fyi i'm also with 3, and don't have that band setting since I luv HSDPA yet certain areas only got Telstra reception...
Calls drop out
Hi, I'm in Sydney with 3 and haven't had any problems at all with the shipped WM5. After upgrading to the latest official WM6 ROM version 3.00.707.18 from the Dopd site things went bad with phone calls and weak signals.
Now upgraded the Radio to version 1.50.08.11 and everything's back to how it 's supposed to be.
Cheers and good luck.

if you have 4 bars in 2G mode, then nothing is wrong with your reception level. 3G mode is completely different from 2G mode all together. having 2-3 bars in 3G mode is perfectly normal. 3G coverage is week in general. You have nothing to be concerned about really.
In my situation I was having 1-2 bars in 2G mode and 1-2 bars in 3G mode. (Polaris). Also, in 3G mode signal frequently was degrated to the level where radio would automatically fallback to 2G mode and stay there. We have practicaly entire HTC range at our disposal. Every single HTC phone that has been manufactured Himalaya inclusive. As soon as I have noticed week GSM signal on Polaris, I have checked few others for the same issue, namely:
Kaiser, Wings, Niki, Excalibur, Cavalier, Himalaya, Pharos, Hermes, Trinity, VOX, Herald and few others.
Also, please note: Kaiser, Wings, Niki and Polaris were running indentical radio: stock standard 1.58.21.23. we keep our handsets consistent accross the board as much as we can.
Kaiser, Niki and Wings produced excellent reception quality results with full 3-4 bars in 2G and 3+ bars in 3G mode.(UMTS 2100 and HSDPA).
I have tested on 3 GSM networks in total.
At the same time, Polaris demonstrated very concerning results in both 2G and 3G mode. (see above).
That is why I have decided to further investigate this issue.
After flashing Murata PPAS radio, Polaris receives 3-4 bars in GSM mode indoors, full 4 bars outdoors, 3 bars indoors and 3-4 bars outdoors. This is perfectly in line with other phones based on the same hardware platform: Kaiser, Niki and Wings.
I hope it helps.
P.S. At this stage I come to conclusion that there are Polaris handsets that have issue and others that have not. No matter what radio they being flashed to. This is perfectly possible if manufacturer replaced some electronic chip in newer batches of phones. This is common practice for mass production. Therefore we have conflicting reports in both polls.
bottom line is: if your Polaris has no issues with GSM reception after non-Murta radio upgrade, then it will likely to keep good reception level with any radio.
Murata radio seems to address the issue with support for specific chip only in handset and will not improve reception level for every single Polaris out there.
Please accept my appologies for such a long winded post.

Hi guys,
I stumbled across this thread... and it seems that there are already a few people who tried to flash the Russian ROM and after that flushing a WWE ROM without radio and they reported that their Polaris was working again after that...
I am currently a little too anxious to try out myself with my Orbit 2 but I thought it would be an idea to point this possible solution in a separate thread and for those who have tried it, please vote so we have a better overview if this is a fix or not...
[edit]
I tried the Radio-only first (after I did the HardSPL flash) but I still get only 2 bars 3G signal strength. Only outdoors it's 4 bars and when walking it's changing between 3 and 4 bars. 2G (GSM) is always at 4 bars inside and outside.
After that I flashed the complete Russian ROM but everything stays the same. Also after hardresetting the device. Even after flashing it again and again :|
Now I think I tried every option which I found on this xda forums several times... maybe any1 has another idea?

No need for apologies well it gives me a better feeling that my Orbit2 is not really that bad, though I remember I had better reception in original state. Currently I'm trying to figure out why TomTom does not get any satellites. I have updated latest data with QuickGPS and chose Built-In GPS...

took about half an hour to get the initial first gps fix... but from then on, it gets the first fix within 3-5 seconds... nice
its working again
Hi guys, i flashed the radio "Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23.rar" and since its back to full strength!
i also lost all my data cuz updating the radio also hard resets ur device;-)good luck folks and dont throw ur polaris away!
Works greaaat ! Thank you so much guys!!
Ok here is my story... I bought a Cruise but the first thing I did was to unlock it (without testing it before!). So when I tried it I thought "what this piece of ****... the reception is so bad!!" but thought it was normal so I was already thinking about selling it on eBay Then I found this forum....
I've just flashed it with Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23 and it works like a charm now, so thank you very much!
ps: before finding this post I tried each rom radio I found! thx again!
You guys are great! I flashed the radio only Murata, and it fixed everything.

Yeah I extensively tested my Orbit 2 this weekend. I think I have no more problems now with it. So my vote to my own poll is actually wrong now... should be "... my 3G reception is back to normal and at full strength"
Thanks to everyone involved on Xda Dev!
At home with original rom I had 2 bars, after to Raramomo SFR and 1.64.08.21
still 2/1 bars in 3G, I have tested Murata and always 2/1 bars, so I have decided to keep 1.64.02.21 because I known its battery's drain and I known nothing about Murata.
Thanks a lot for you works
Murata radio is a life saver for wm6.1..awesome full 4 bars reception...highly recemmended for anyone have reception problems after updated their radio ..awesome
Just to clarify on this issue with low reception for some Polaris handsets:
Manufacturer has replaced some micro electronic components in some batches of Polaris.
Stock standard radio 1.58.21.23 and others has no support for those new components and therefore new handsets suffer low reception level issue.
1.58.21.23 radio Murata has support for new components included and maintains backward compatibility to earlier shipped handsets.
this radio will not affect ( improve or otherwise) reception quality for phones in older batches.
P.S. Radio is genuine.

My question is, why my (I got it early, I guess I have an old model) Polaris came shipped with 1.58.23.21 where the Murata Radio reads version number 1.58.21.23 which is lower and thus I assume older?

I think you are incorrect, I had other radio work on my polaris for little while in 3g before they dont work, I think it is got something to do with mty
Thank you for the great discovery. This Murata thing is working! I wanted to go with this device to the warranty, but i said to give this a shot, because my TC had the same simptoms discribed (only that i tested in GSM, i use 3g only for net).
Where i had signal between 70-80% (2-3 lines) now i have 100% (i use this percentage because i have batterystatus program that tells me in percentage). Where one hour ago my TC didn't discover any signal now it has 70% (2-3 lines).
I tested with dslreports.com/mspeed before and after:
GSM/GPRS: 29kbits before - 40kbits after
3g: 141kbits before - 200kbits after
My device information:
ROM VERSION: 1.25.405.1 WWE
ROM dare: 12/11/07
Radio Version: 1.58.21.23 (it writes the SAME version i had before, no murata no nothing)
Protocol version: 25.65.30.04W
I have to mention one thing: on my box (the box with the htc touch cruise in it), where it has the bar code, it writes Rev. A (from Revision A). I think maybe all devices with revision A will benefit from this radio and other revision not... please specify what it writes on your package.
Thanks again! Now I can say I am sattisfied with my investment (If you look in my posts I baught a s-h htc tytn I with battery drain problems... now is for sale for just 180 Euro in Romania... i can ship it if someone wants it)
thanks you for your help.
I had a bad reception in GSM mode.
I downloaded this rom.
Now in my room my reception is full (after 2-3 lines).
And my touch cruise detect a 3g area (no before this radio rom).
I try in my office this morning (no signal with the original rom).
I'am enjoy and this Rom resolve my problem.

If you are talking about the Radio Panel to listen to FM radio stations then that should come pre-installed on your X1 and is usually located on the 6th panel. If it is not there then you can go to the panel manager settings and make it visible through there.
However, if you are talking about the GSM Radio version of the X1 then that is built-in within the ROM when the device is flashed and something that should not be played with unless you know what you are doing.
I hope this helps!

Hi SaAlWe, these "radios" are the software which controls how your device talks to the cellular network for voice and data. I also believe it controls wi-fi as well.
The original Xperia X1 radios are designed specifically for the X1, the others are taken from similar devices which are made by HTC who also made the X1 for SE.
Flashing a new radio will only change the radio, and "usually" doesn't affect anything else, although as always, YOU take the risk!
I haven't yet changed the radio on my X1 as it works fine, but I have changed it on other HTC devices with some good results of improved signal and less battery usage.
Hope this helps.
remember to backup anything first before flash radio rom, it will deletes all things on phone... i know because i did it just now no one telling me doing radio rom will hard reset phone at the same time...
How strange, I've flashed the radio rom plenty of times on other HTC devices and it didn't alter anything, forget causing a hard reset!
Thanks for the heads-up foxcheng, it takes me ages to rebuild all my apps and settings after a hard reset, so I won't change my radio now.

Absolutely positively 100% NO: UPGRADING YOUR RADIO ROM WILL NOT DELETE ANYTHING BUT THE PREVIOUS RADIO FIRMWARE
I've flashed TONS OF RADIOS (testing, editing, comparing...) and NEVER lost a single bit of my data
Please check the RADIO'S THREAD if you want to learn more about this topic
Thanks gtrab, I've never had a problem with my other HTC devices, so was thinking of trying a new radio at some point, until I read foxcheng's post which scared me off.
However, if you've done it lots of times on the X1, I'll give it a go.

does this mean that *IF* we can take the rom and radiofrom the "touchpro2" from T-mobile, we can POSSIBLY recieve 1700/2100 3G band for the X1a?

Was 3G now G

Flashed T-Mobile 1.43 to generic 1.66 which has improved the loud call volume and distortion greatly. But the network now says G rather than 3G are they the same?
Does this mean the network settings have changed. I have selected T-Mobile as the network internet.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
3G is as you expect 3G, G is GPRS which is deffinately NOT 3G speed.
Chances are the rom you have installed has 3G mode off by default. Open Comm Mannager and you should find some toggle switches, one for data connection, and another for 3G. If the data connection one is on, but 3g is 'off', you will get G or E (for edge), but with the 3G one 'on' you should get H (HSDPA) or 3G
Tlooked through the settings and there is nothing that switches 3G on or off.
Anyone else seen this?
Thanks.
Suggestion:
Flash to Dutty's HG v8, which is based on the t-mobile ROM and has this option (and is much better than 1.66 stock, IMO)
I don't know about you since you are on T-Mobile, and if there is a 1.66 ROM released explicitly for the T-Mobile net, but I'll share my knowledge on this:
I'm located in Sweden and use the HD2 on the Tele2 net. I also upgraded to 1.66 and got the exact same problem as you.
I tried the 2.07 rom and the problem remained, however after 2-3 hours I finally got 3G connection.
The problem is that both 1.66 and 2.07 comes with newer radios. These Radios are the reason I can't use 3G at least. I downgraded the Radio to 2.05.51.05_2 and it all works fine for me now. I don't know if this is operator related or hardware related and hence I'd like to know if the 1.66 ROM you installed is explicitly released for the T-Mobile net.
If that's the case I'll probably need to contact my vendor since I'll probably not be able to use any of the newer Radios, which frankly sucks. Please let me know!
I have the 1.66 on Virgin UK (Tmobile and the 3G has not dropped at all.
Don't know if that helps or confuses ?

+1
Ild rather have the choice, than no choice at all. Dutty's ROM has been the only flashes ive needed since T-Mobile stock ROMs.
The ROM is the latest 1.66 on the HTC website. I asked T-Mobile about it but the person did not really know. They asked if the internet connection was fast, but since I've had the phone it has been patchy. It seems reasonably fast today. We have two other T-Mobile phones, HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy and both these also show the G and these are non flashed standard as bought.
I'm a bit nervous about using cooked ROMs.

Went over to Hungerford this morning and 3G came up so it must be a network/location issue and nothing associated with ROM 1.66.
Good to know all functionality is still there.
Thanks for all the replies.

As I said, in my case it took a couple of hours (no matter location) and the 3G appeared. Could you do a soft reset when you get the 3G at Hungerford and see how long it takes before you get 3G again?
