voice and data usage left for the month - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hello
i just got an xda exec on the o2 network.
i was wondering if you guys could tell me how to find out thenumber of free minutes and amount of free data mbs left in the month
with orange i dialed 150 and would get the number of free minutes left. i called up o2 services and they said they did not have any such number.
is that true? is there any way i could check left usage for the month

Use the online bill manager, it's complex but good.
You'll probbly find that you're not charged for data currently.

online bill manager accessed from "my account"
thanks
i found it in the unbilled details, does it also have the web usage
what do you mean by "You'll probbly find that you're not charged for data currently."
in the first month am i not billed for data(web) usage?

I get 5Mb a month, and I'm well over that for sure. I hewrd a little bird that O2 haven'tr been charging many people for data. I appear to be one of them.

Unofficially call 100 (which is Network Services; it's free) and asked to be transfered to the correct department who can give you a more up-to-date idea.

i called 100 and they said that i should dial the regular 087... number.
i discovered that the 087... numbr is not a toll free number, that's cheeky
hey belfast-biker, you mean havent been charging any people , or havenet been charging many people.
does the monthly bill show the amount of data that one has used ??

It's a known "issue" that O2 don't seem to charge "Online" users for data, but please don't keep bringing it up, otherwise someone from O2 might notice and then get their act together. THey might start charging us at any time and that would NOT be good. Just keep an eye on your unbilled usage and see if the data ever changes... it probably won't. Mum's the word, eh?!

I'm being billed for my Data Usage I used to get it free.
Euan

oooo thanks for the tip
i hope we wont be billed retrospectively

at the moment my data is not displayed, just voice and text messages, you mean to say as soon as they start showing data that is when i should be careful about my data usage?
hey themez are you an online user? were you billed retrospectively for data used?

I got the £162 deal, so i am on Data 5 with Data Centric (Voice). For a while it was totally free and then one day i looked at my online bill and i had used 8MB and had been charged an extra £3. I had been told it was free until May and made a complaint to o2. They were pretty good and gave me a £10 customer dispute voucher thing.
Keep an eye on your online bill
Euan

thanks for the reply
what is the £162 deal, is it an online deal again
02 had said that you had unlimited download till may? i loked at my online bill and it still does not say anything about data usage in the unbilled calls section
the usage still only has two sectiosn (voice and text)
the inclusive allowance details however has the following
i got double-200 extra anytime minute rollover (nice, did not know they were rollover minutes)
15 messages
welcome browse and download 5 MB(i thought it was 1 MB, will i keep this 5 MB package for some time)

How To Monitor Your GPRS Usage?

I've been with o2 now for 1x month, just recieved my second bill. However I'm not happy with their billing or customer service at all. There are a number of things I have been unhappy including waiting at least 10 minutes in the que before I'm answered by an o2 customer service rep. Even then they contradict each other giving wrong information its rediculas!
Anyway I will put aside my complaints about o2 for now except to say that their online billing is also crap. Towards the end of June I ran out of free minutes which was suspect at the time so I only used my phone thereafter when I had to in order to prevent clocking up a larger bill. Well the day before my free minutes should be renewed my o2 online bill showed me that I had over 3hrs remaining of free calls even though my bill also showed me that I've been billed extra for calls as my free minutes ran out.
The other complaint I have and this is where I'm asking for advice is that o2 claim I've been connecting to their mobile.o2.co.uk website and downloading data - WHICH I MOST DEFINATLEY HAVE NOT BEEN!!!!
I have disputed this three times with o2 and spent HOURS on the hours on the phone at my expense but they are still billing me for the extra GPRS data. Is there a way to check how much GPRS data has been used on my XDA II?
FAQ from my-XDA.com says this...
Question 9:
How can I track what my GPRS usage?
Answer:
Select Programs > File Explorer > My Device > Windows. Scroll down to the application labelled ByteCounter. Tap and Hold and select Copy. Scroll up and tap the Start Menu folder. Select Edit > Paste Shortcut. This utility is now on your Programs menu , and will report statistics for the last active connection.
Having followed this instruction I have NO "ByteCounter" in which to copy.
Thanks
Paul.

What about using the GSM type connection instead of the GPRS one?
Do you get free GSM minutes as well as a certain amount of free GPRS downloads?
Thanks Rudegar I'm trying out that program now.
davidand1, I'm with o2 on the 200 talk plan. I've not been told if I get free GSM minutes, I doubt it very much.
They don't tell you about it, although it'll be in the small print. I found out I get 500 free GSM minutes a month! It's admittedly slower than GPRS but there's a helluva lot less risk of incurring charges when compared to GPRS.
What do they give us these days, 1Mb free?! What a jip. I suggest you check it out, might be worth it...
SPB GPRS monitor is the way to go... it keeps track of your hourly, daily and monthly usages of GPRS.. it even creates a report for a certain period of time of how much you have spent or downloaded and uploaded.. really a must for mobile people...
GSM web access - but how? Free minutes goin a wastin!
oo that pesky anonymous guest!
Suggesting a fine idea then riding off into the sunset like that!
I get 50 minutes a day free which i used to use to check my email with WAP. Tried to get my XDAii to connect via WAP but despite a soul-destroying series of contacts with Orange customer services and wire-free specialists i ended up non the wiser. If anyone can post the settings for orange WAP access i'll be v grateful.
I seem to remember seeing them on another page in this fine forum sometime in the past. Tried em to no avail.

So i got push email... Now my data bill is 200$... For the second time.

hey,
i installed push email (port88) on my phone, i have had it for two months (awesome service).
The only problem is my databill is 200$... for the second time. I have a 1 meg plan. i dont receive many emails on this phone.
I apparently went over 5 megabyets. My phone doesn't go over 0.05 KB a message as i have the default option to restrict it from downloading anymore.
I probably received 80 emails in a month (thats exagerating it). If we multiply 80x0.05 we get 4. Thats 4 Kilobytes used. I also send about 6 emails a month. That's not even 10kilobytes a month.
I never use my browser and it doesn't browse to sites itself (due to being in my pocket.) And the only data i use is for my email.
Does anyone have any ideas to what can be happening?
your phone could be autoconnecting to gprs/edge. and the constant connection could be sending kb back and forth without your knowledge.
hiimcliff is right on..
The way direct push works is that it maintains an HTTP(S) connection back to the Exchange Server.. Even though you might not be receiving emails, the phone will still be sending data to maintain the connection. That's the likely cause of it.
I asked my provider (fido) if i maintain a conenction, will i be charged, even if i keep disconnecting and reconnecting? I had the guy ask his tech
he replied, i can connect/disconnect as many times as i liked. Aslong as i didn't browse on anything, send receive data, i would be fine. Connecting doesn't use any of my data.

thats crap. dont listen to that. there is no way for them to determine, email kb's from connect/disconnect kb's. makes no sense imo.

connecting to GPRS may not use data (Questionable) but the constant traffic back and forth when your device talks to exchange definatly will.
I have push email on 2 different wizards and my bill shows a day to day readout of my usage which is never less than 7 megs a day. I generaly use about 2gb of data per month on each device sometimes as much as 4gb. The high monthly usage is attributed mostly to flashing my phone many times and resyncing my whole exchange account over active sync as well as teathering my laptop to the pda and surfing around.
If you use the push email you should just get unlimited data. $35 a month gets me unlimited data here in the states (nationwide no roaming) I think that is a pretty good deal. That is for each device so $70 a month on my cell bill is for data.
WELL WELL WELL.
So i got curious about this situtation about half way through posting this message, soo.... I called up FIDO and after navigating through their auto attendant I got some french canadian guy who told me a little secret after much poking and proding. Are you ready? This dude said that if I call in and say that I have a "HipTop" (equivalant to tmobile sidekick) that I could get unlimited data for that for $20 per month. He said they don't sell the HipTop anymore buy that if I had one (or said I had one) that I would get $20 a month data all day long. WOOT!
ok Canadians go forth and get your data plan.
be careful with that. providers are sometimes know to revert your phone back to the original and that could result in changing your plan back to a per/kb plan which can cost you loads of money.

One question, i have my phone set to manually synch. So it only synchs upon request but my emails come in.
I still dont udnerstand how i used so much data if i dont synch.

well if you had sucked it up and paid the $20 a month you would have saved money in the end.
$20 a month is a freakin steal man. TAKE IT. Then you can wire up your push email to download all your atachments and full messages, you can hook up to your laptop and let loose.
I love my unlimited data plan. I used to pay $75 a month for it. I would gladly pay that again on each device. For me I will pay whatever it takes to make my life better easier faster.
I can get up from my desk and go anywhere I please and stay connected to work, this is huge for me. Clients call my office get routed to my cell and I can look over emails they have sent. Then if need be i can pull out the laptop and get online to fix problems or whatever.
Data in my pocket, is kick ass.

T-Mobile US Problems

Situation:
I am w/ an HD, on T-Mobile, in the US.
I have the $9.99 / month 100 mb data plan (cuz I have wifi about 85% of the time).
I have unlimited messaging (of all kinds) on my plan.
I can connect to edge and browse on it just fine.
Another person on my family plan has working mms no problem.
I put in a friends SIM and it worked straight away, he used mine and it wouldn't work.
I have already tried getting my SIM card replaced.
already tried two cabs from these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394735
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395203
Problem:
NO MMS. I really can't figure it out. It seems that no matter what I do, it just never works. Sending gets to 99% (w/ the little icon at the top), but it never ends up going through.
When someone sends me a message...I just don't ever get any notification at all.
I have tried stock roms, cooked roms, I make sure to set my carrier to T-Mobile US, I have checked the internet as well as called CC for the server settings, and even just had my SIM replaced today...still no luck.
Anything welcome,
Thanks,
Jim.
Hi, I use Touch HD with T-Mobile, my sim accoubt is 'pay as you go' prepaid , I dont have data as my account has only MMS and it works great without any problems, after flashing my device with Dutty 1.7 the automitic configuration settings configured my phone but MMS didn't work and after checking the settings I discovered that the proxy is missing on the MMS access point setting and entering it, MMS worked again like charm.
Buy the way i am new here in US and when I go to T-mobile and ask about data plan they give me a Verizon prosure with alot of data plans and the cheapest is 39 $ !!! please let me know the details of your plan and what should I tell them when I go there in order to get the same 9 $ plan you have.
Thanks for the help

Also...what proxy are you guys using? I have read that it needs to be DISabled...so that's what I have it to.
Thanks,

EDIT: WOAH!! Just called and checked my data usage and they said I hadn't used any!!!!!!!!!! Billed or unbilled. THATS INSANE! Lol
I have only had a data plan for about 4 days, and only been using it for about 3 but....still. I would think it would take only 2 business days maximum to show up. Maybe I don't wanna get my phone fixed... lol I'd rather have unlimited data than limited data and mms. I know all the carrier extensions, I'll just email them maybe...
But I guess I am still going to go to the store and have them check out the mms

When you go to T-Mobile they give you a VERIZON brochure?
But, you just tell them that you have a regular flip phone or something (don't tell them you have a smart phone) and tell them that you want to sign up for the 100mb / month web2go internet plan. It is $9.99 / month. You can also do it over the internet (that's how I did it).
Thanks guys!
I REALLLY hope I can keep getting unlimited data for $10! (especially considering that T-Mobile's data is the slowest of all the carriers..)
Jim
I just called them and they said that for the past 3 months I've used no data, however the guy told me that $20 is the lowest plan.....? (I let it slip i have a smart phone, and he said that's the lowest for smart phones) So should I call back and tell them I have an old flip phone piece of garbage (for which they have a $10 plan) and will it still work no problem? (I'm gonna try it, but a 'yes' or 'no' would help)
Thanks, looking forward to saving my $10 a month

The easiest way is to just log on to their site, change your phone to a razr or something, then add the web2go for $9.99 / month. Easy as that! That's what I did.
STILL NO MMS FOR ME THOUGH! UGH

I really don't want them to catch on!
HAHA, yes, when I called, I too was very selective about my choice of words. But I'm gonna try and change the data plan later today through site as planned and sugested above (great minds....). I'll let you know if it works for me and if afterwords I can still send MMS since maybe it's the $10 plan that causes the problem.

Thanks jim, so I was in the right place, you just can't have the Razor selected as you phone. Apparently different phones have different packages. It took me like 6 tries before I got a phone that let me change my internet, while all the others only let me add the hotspots (I almost gave up). I finally choose the Sony Ericsson TM506 - Emerald which let me change the data plan and besides the 100mb for $10, it also had a 50mb with 200 texts for $10 (which is obviously the better choice, unless you need more than 200 texts).
So in the end, I swapped from $20 for unlimited data + $5 for 400texts to $10 for 200 texts with 50mb(unlimited on HD).....not a bad deal.
again, thanks for the help jim

Oh dang sorry. I so almost told you what phone I had selected but didn't bother.
I too saw the $10 for 200 txts and 50 mb, but since I already have unlimited messaging...the 100mb was obviously of course the better deal for me.
Glad you got it working!
I'm gonna call again right now and chk my data usage just in case...used a ton over the past 2 days or so :S
Jim
EDIT: They said that for the first month, they are unable to track / check your usage. Keep in mind! After that, you can check update anytime anyday. But up until it has been on there for one full month / billing cycle, they can't tell you how much you have used!!
They did say though that they will start over my 100mb on the 13th because they were unable to check how much I have used, and if I go ever between now and then they will credit it all back so that is awesome.
I've had the HD for about 3months now (with the Data Plan) and when I called and checked, they said 0mb used each month (which is, of course, wrong, but great) so I'm hoping that it will remain that way, but just to be sure I'll make calls to check.

I would definitely recommend ditching that.
OK. Update.
Called up support again, wanted to add to my "trouble ticket" that I had submitted that my tmomail.net account wasn't working at all. I couldn't even email plain text to my tmomail.net address. Also wanted to update them with the fact that when some carriers send me a pic msg, they get a reply back saying that I rejected it.
The result was that I was finally transferred all the way up to 'advanced'. This is supposedly the highest. I had already spoken w/ tier 1, tier 2, and tier3 before, and once transferred to advanced I had everything fixed within about 20 minutes!
Thanks,
Jim.

What errors are you encountering over EDGE with email?

O2 X1 as modem - Breaching contract??

I have recently discovered how to use my phone as a modem on my laptop, and use the dataplan. I have unlimited data usage. the question i'm asking is: would they do anything when they find out there's a lot of data being used on my behalf. Also i've looked through O2's t&c's and all it says is fair usage, no actual figure of how much data per month you are allowed. could someone just give me some insightful info.
Thanks,
Joel
Also would using a bluetooth connection maybe make me less inconspicuous as there is a maximum data transfer rate of 56 kilo BYTES using bluetooth, where as O2 has a maximum HSDPA speed of 1.8 mega BITS (around 180 kilo BYTES per second). So maybe staying away from a cable would be slightly beneficial?
from their side it should just show that it's your phone which request and recieve all the data your laptop request thats the nature of using it as a router/modem
what do you mean?
Whoa!!
I used my phone with the Internet Sharing for a couple of days just to check my email and do a little browsing (While I was away in Cornwall).
And I got charged even though i've got unlimited data plan.
According to the O2 they can charge me if I use the phone as a tethered modem. As to how they know the difference between the phones browser and a laptop using it's connection I don't know

He means they won't know a thing!
Basically, using laptop to access is the same as using the phone but plus convenient.

May be you could try changing UserAgent on you browser to match opera and see if that works.
I've recieved a warning.. kind of
It reads
O2: Due to your daily data usage being extremely high following our previous warning
Thats it!
I've had no other warnings to my knowledge.
I called to enquire what the meaning of the above message. The call centre op said it was to do with my data usage and Asked me if i was using my phone as a modem
I've been with o2 for many years, and have used my phone as a modem for the entire time
I don't fully believe they can tell what you're doing with your phone, surely if they knew the call centre op would have pointed this out.
But I do believe i have put myself above the radar by DLing the latest episode of Heroes on Tuesday night!! (I was stopping in a hotel and I was bored!)
ha ha brilliant. so... has anyone measured their download speed if so what's the highest you've achieved? i'm intrigued...
I was told the "unlimited" plan was subject to a fair usage policy which was around 300mb a month or so, up to 400 would not be unreasonable the chap said... but I have not even got near that yet... yet...
The only way they can tell your phone is being used as a modem is as a result of the high usage. There is nothing to say that you cannt use your phone as a modem and the only restriction is the unlimited data plan bolt-on's fair usage policy. The policy isn't a set figure from what I have been told, it's a determined level of data allowance based upon your tariff, minutes and texts and your usage on the contract. What I'm not sure of id whether the fair usage figure goes up as you use more minutes and texts. However, I think it is raised by how much your tariff and average monthly spend is.
All I can suggest is not using a phone as a modem other than in an emergency, such as in a power cut....which there are barely any of in the UK.
I work for o2...The official line is your not supposed to do it.
Fair usage policy is 230 MB. It has been set at an amount that a phone alone would never use in a month.
Problem with laptops and PC's is they consume much larger quantities of data, when browsing. The biggest culprit is Auto Windows Update, you can be unaware that this can run in the background downlaoding updates for programs.
If Microsoft releases a service pack for windows or office, that can easily be more than your whole monthly allowance in a matter of minutes.
Theoretically they can charge you £3 for every MB you go over...thus a windows service pack could cost you up £200 to £300.
In the UK they dont often do this, they send polite text messages instead. However do this abroad and they will charge you every time.
Dont worry I wont tell

YOU MUPPET!
Seriously, torrents are huge hogs of bandwidth so it's no wonder that O2 latched onto you. 350MB seeded back to 1:1 is 700MB total. Even if you got it from newsgroups it would still kill your bandwidth allocation. I know it's not what you want to hear but READ your terms and conditions in future! It's made quite plain that you're not to use the phone tethered to a laptop.
I've been using my mobile internet quite heavily and my account panel says I'm hardly using anything (maybe 5MB per day if I'm lucky). 230MB/month sounds like a reasonable level and thank you for confirming it Mark. Everyone knew it was *around* 200MB but no-one seemed to know exactly how much.

I would think that with todays phones (especially like the x1) they would up this... eg if I use Edge or HSDPA and I would like to download some of the RSS feeds i have and some of them have podcasts (Chinese for language learning) then I can use that allowance in a very very short time... all with just my phone... is the allowance a hang over from the wap type of phones...??
BBC had to stop iplayer going out over GPRS because of download quanitities.
o2 have another data bolt on called Web Max, and its £30 and I think the domestic UK limit on it is around 3GB, it was the for-runner to USB Mobile Broadband.
Data Bolt On Terms
* A maximum of one Data Bolt On can be added at any one time.
* The Web Bolt On allows you unlimited use of Telefónica O2 UK Limited's Edge/GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:
o in, or connected to, any other device including modems;
o to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing; or
o in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.

I am on the web bolt-on and I have used VoIP and streaming of video and music over the HSDPA network of O2 and I have not seen them charging me in my monthly bill.
I guess they have a way to detect if the device is being used as a modem but the question is how?! Perhaps the only curlprit here is the excessive usage that flagged it up on the system but the same usage could be done using the X1i with a torrent client on the actual device, no?
No such thing has unlimited...
altho o2 still states unlimited, 200mb has also been mentioned on the website..
I guess it just depends how lucky your are..

Whilst the easiest way will be useage, they can also spot which ports you are using, so stuff like BitTorrent should be detectable.
on o2 uk it says you must not connect it to a laptop

Two different T-Mobile CS people have stated to me that it's the same as they offer for Android phones - 3GB. That's what http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news6340.html were told too.
Nothing in the website terms and conditions to confirm or deny that though.
i bought mine in the t-mobile store (UK). They guy said its definitely 3GB fair usage and if you go over it they normally do not care.....[said a guy came in with a letter from t-mobile saying not to do it again when he used 96GB!!]
The problem is if you have bought yours through a website tht is not t-mobile then you will get the crappy data speed and 1GB limit....so watch out
T-Mobile will send you a text when you use 80% of your 3 gig limit. After you go over the limit you'll be limited to web browsing only during peak hours (4pm - 12am) from memory.
I just called T-mobile, because i had a text message saying im on 80% fair usage policy im like WTF!!?!? ive got free internet booster (even though i know its just for browsing and stuff) .. ive hardly downloaded anything. Im pretty sure most of the time the apps ive downloaded were off marketplace on zune (PC) . I think maybe the odd few times ive downloaded few apps like Hydro thunder from my phone, which may have may have done the damage (i had to due to hard reset and some apps dont automatically load up) . Unfortunately i do not own a wireless router...yet, i have to buy one .
At first i thought t-mobile may have made a mistake, but saw somewhere an app like Hydro Thunder is like 230MB , thats a large file certainly on a phone's data usage. The lady at T-mobile said im on 430MB and 570MB left ...which makes you wonder why the hell do they say ive used 80% in the text message .
I should have not bought my omnia 7 from buymobilephones . I would have had 3GB allowance if went directly with t-mobile
btw how does one find out the size of these apps you download? im shocked Microsoft haven't given us a right click type feature for the windows phone 7 ..that would be such a vital feature. I like to check on the size of pics, apps, movie clips etc ... you want to know the dimensions too like so and so clip is 1280 x 720p etc .

I'm going to get an Omnia7 from T-Mobile directly on their £15/month tarrif with Internet bolt-on. If I am not mistaken that entitles me to 500 MB internet monthly allowance. Si if I exceed those 500 megs of data, I am not charged till the limit of fair usage policy??? Is that limit 3000 MB? I'm not talking for the £25+ tarrifs that were recently changed to include trully unlimited data...
As far as your comment about the right click / properties type of key I totally agree. Over-simplification is not good.

Yeah good idea get it directly from them, they told me if i exceed my fair use policy..they just charge £1 a day after that (when u use data) ..and you can use as much as you want ..until the new month comes and it all refreshes back to the start. Its every start of the month the free data allowance starts. You should get something with at least 1Gb Internet booster , 500mb will go easily. But ideally a router is best so you dont have use the free allowance ..only for situations when your not near your PC.
yeah i wish MS adds that, you need that right click feature ..so you can find out how big apps and other file are
New official T-Mobile UK Data policy
As far as T-Mobile Data allowance is concerned I found the following on their site...
''... If you join T-Mobile before 30 September 2011 and select a 24-month price plan of £25 a month or more, the good news is that there's no fair use policy. Remember that you can only use internet on your phone in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem (tethering) or use internet on your phone for peer-to-peer file sharing or making internet phone calls...''
Comment: do they block voip packages????
''... If you're choosing any other pay monthly plan (<£25), please see the fair use policy below.
However much you use the internet, you'll never get charged extra
We're the only operator to offer you a fixed price for browsing and emailing on your phone with no limits and no extra charges. Use 3G for getting online on your phone when you're out and about. Never pay more than your monthly fixed price. You can always browse and email with no limits.
Is there an allowance?
You can browse and email as much as you want. There is a 500MB allowance for streaming videos and uploading and downloading files. If you hit this limit during the month, you won't be able to do this stuff again until the next month.
For the best internet on your phone, connect to your home WiFi, so you won't even touch your 500MB allowance.
What about using apps?
Some apps use a normal internet connection, so they will work just like your browsing and email allowance. But there are some apps that use streaming connections, so these will fall into the 500MB allowance...''
So their new fair usage policy discerns between ''normal'' data and ''streaming'' data''. (packet inspection??) Web browsing and email sync fall into normal data category that is unlimited and does not count towards your 500MB download data allowance
When downloading a file off the internet (let's say an app off the MarketPlace), or streaming a movie, you are consuming data from a 500 MB data ''pool''. If you exceed tgis limit, you cannot further download/stream, but you can still continue to have data access for http/browsing data. apps like netflix, vevo, youtube fall into that download data category, I assume.
One question arises, what happens with voip data packages (if there are any voip apps for wp7 for the time being, anyway there is a google voice client I recon)
