New PIM - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi if I install a new PIM to use instead of outlook how do I get rid of outlook? Presumably if I just install the new PIM outlook will just sit there using memory.
Any help would be appreciated
Peter :?

Yes, pocket outlook just sits there using up memory. it will still work. Most PIMs offer the option to become the default mail application so Pocket Outlook is generally ignored

What is PIM?

gotta admit, this is the main thing that puts me off installing a lot of third-party apps. i dont mind installing new apps, but when my Exec is as short of space as it is, it seems like a waste to have 2 apps that do the same thing installed.
so as long as i cant uninstall IE, i dont install another browser. as long as i cant uninstall media player, i'll stick with it even though i know TCMP is better, and so on - same for IM and PIM.
but am i really stuck with these? can we uninstall the core apps and free up the space for third-party improvements?

Killing the poutlook.exe task will free about 250k program memory on my Magician. It'll probably try to launch itself when you get reminders and need contacts etc though. Untested, just theory...

Thanks for confirming the issue.
I agree this is also what put me off installing alternative apps.
Is it possible to take out pocket outlook?
Or more to the point is it possible for a novice?

Want to redo phone, how do I backup and which of the ...

My phone suddenly feels sluggish as if some program is hogging all the memory and I've made a bit of a mess anyway :?. I also just recently got a 1GB mini SD and want to install apps to it.
I need to backup: my contact list, call history, text messages, notes, tasks and also calendar.
How do I go about doing this?
Also which of the following should go on PPC and which are fine to run off the SD?
-TCMP (which cab am I supposed to use again?)
-Skype (going to try new one)
-Total Commander
-Real player (don't think TCMP can play such files)
-The tweak app posted here
-Adobe acrobat reader PPC (I know there's something else but I don't remember its name)
-minimo (seems pretty interesting haven't had the chance to try it out yet)

Contact list, notes, tasks, calender is backuped with ActiveSync. You don't have to worry if ActiveSync works fine with Outlook.
About the call history and text messages I don't know. I myself haven't find them that important.
I use Sunnysoft Backup Manager for backups:
http://www.sunnysoft.com/en_clanek.php?clanekid=51
Check it out ... it's good if to restore to a snapshot before you screw up your device.
And remember to "redo your phone" with the newest available ROM.
To be honest, I have been running without Activesync. Don't think I have outlook installed...hmm. Is there any way to do it so that it can be loaded directly onto the phone? Otherwise I guess I will have to install it as it comes with office if I remember correctly.
If I can't backup text messages...hmm...there must be away. I would like to keep the call history but it looks like it can't be helped...I'll have to run through and collect some of those numbers :x
Do I really need the newest ROM for my mini S? :? The one on it right now works great. Heck even skype worked acceptably till now...

I suppose it's possible if you know where the data is saved. But I think there won't be a simple way of doing it. I would myself be intresting where the data can be found.

Once you "redo your phone" ... it's your best opertunity to upgrade the ROM. And I prefer you do so to avoid problems in the feature. Your device will be faster and be more stable (ROM 2.17).
2.17...Is that an O2 ROM? I will first need to figure out how to save those text messages. Hmm.... Worth emailing MS?

2.17 is the ROM HTC has distributed to all brands/countries ... depeding on each contact it depends when the ROM is available officially.
I think it's no worth mailing MS. Hope someone here know where the SMS are saved.

WM2003 to WM2005 migration advise

Anyone have any advice on migration of "personal" data (contact, calendar, SMS, e-mails, task list, etc) from WM2003 to WM2005. By the way I do not synch any of this stuff with my desktop PC. Must be a wiki/FAQ but I could not locate. Thanks.
Can I ask why you don't sync with your desktop PC?
It will make life so much easier to migrate if the majority of the data has been saved on your PC to then simply sync onto your new device; the SMSs will be more fiddly, but I can't remember the software I used when I migrated from PPC2002 to PPC2003SE.

I suspected that was the answer. Won't be too bad, I guess. As far as your question:
-I do not use MS Outlook for mail, tasks nor calendar. I use Eudora, my PDA2k and our CRM tool for all of this stuff Outlook can do.
-I was burnt by an early sync configuration problem that killed all my data (I did have a back up luckily)
-Have not found that syncing is a good solution for access to everything all the time.
I used Jeyo Mobile Extender to back up / restore myu SMSs when I last migrated, but as it's an Outlook enhancement, it's not going to be much use for you.
All I can therefore suggest is ActiveSync for the non-SMS data, and some third party app for the SMSs; Google may be your best bet ...

Because or requirements at my job, we don't use Outlook. We use SyncML to sync contacts and calendar events with our internal server. Really nice being able to sync without hooking ot a computer and anyplace you have GPRS / WiFi access.
Here's a post where I put some info and links about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1159992&postcount=4
i need an exactly same like palm desktop to sync my contact and calender when sync with usb cable
zzzzzzzzzzzz
any 1 have third party software that can sync contact to desktop to view and edit??
i have try uninstall outlook 2003 and activesync 4.5 many time, and the result remain the same
I have had the ActiveSync problem since 10/2006 and have not found a resolution yet. I have posted on this forum, tried all suggestions and tried everything except a Hard Reset. I still cannot get my Desktop or Laptop to recognize my MDA via ActiveSync even though my Desktop and Laptop recognize my MDA. I have asked for 3rd party software to update my Outlook address book and calendar and have not found anything. I have even asked if there is software to update/change the MDA PIM.VOL file via a desktop or laptop. Still no luck. I have researched this out and checked all possible sites. NO LUCK. I still have not given up. I continue to look daily for a solution other than a Hard Reset.
So, you are not alone. There are many of us out there. ActiveSync is a very poor application. Maybe someday we will find something to use instead of AS. The only think that is missing in the AS is the last 'S'.
Hey friends,
I dont know if this reply is useful for you. I am so new to this forum. I am using a Motorola Mpx220, but gonna get my Cingular 8125 within a couple of days. Anyways, when I was syncing my Mpx, I had the same problem. The solution I found out was(after a long research), while the phone is still connected to the computer, go to Start -> Accessories -> Modem link. In that "USB" connection, make it active and then deactivate. As soon as you do this your active sync will detect the phone and it will sync smoothly.
I have no idea why is it happening like this nor I dont know if it works with MDA coz my Mpx220 is running on WM 2003 SE. I can only check WM 5 after I get my 8125. If this reply help you guys in anyways, please let me know.
Thanks mates.....

So there is no third party "phone manager" like for example Oxygen Phone Manager for Symbian phones ?
Contacts backup without outlook
Try " Jeyo Mobile Companion" . Google for it. It can save the contacts + call log as well as SMS on your comp. You can restore/ update the it any time It doesnt sync though. Just use it for back up purposes. Very hand. You still need to connect that phone to the comp. and AS to recognize your device.
Trust this helps
I assume that I can backup my PIM.VOL file on my 2Gb Storage Card. I have not had to reinstall the PIM.VOL file so I don't know if it really will work. However, I still would like to find an application that will allow me to update/change my Contacts and Calendar without using ActiveSync. Bottom line, why can't we find something that can do this without using AS since we are having problems on using AS? I have used Palms since day 1 and other things without as much problems as AS.

asctony,
AFAIK, you still need AS to connect the PPC to any PC ( I cud be wrong). What you can do is to set AS not to sync your contacts and others and use another 3p software to update / modify contatcts. The prog - Jeyo mobile companion does just that + back up your SMS too. Which is very crucial, in many cases as they cannot be backed up through the regular way.

If you browse to "My Device" you will find a file called "pim.vol" thats where all wm devices stores contact and calendar data!
Just copy the file and put it in the same directory on any other wm device, and restart the device, thats it, now you should have all your contacts and calendar information on the other device! FOR FREE!
No need to install any programs for doing that!
Good luck!

I'm with this guy....I use Microsoft "My Phone" too....I like to mess with my phone and this program syncs everything that I need and stores it online. I can even access and make changes from my PC if I feel the need. Everytime I change my ROM I just sync it up and all my contacts, calendar etc are back on the phone!
Seem those guys never upgrade their phone, uh!
Every time you have to re-enter all config stufs (e.g. e-mails accounts & passwords, connections settings, and so on); everything can be saved by ActiveSync or My Phone EXCEPT those specific configs!!!
I just found CeRegistryEditor (link to ceregeditor.mdsoft.pl/?lang=en): it allows to backup & compare registry entries with file(s) by using ActiveSync connection.
Everytime you add/change some specific settings just compare entries with previously saved one and save it with mnemonic name; once you re-initialize your phone just load all saved keys, of course without forgetting to re-install all related programs, if needed!
Your phone will be just as you want in a couple of minutes. That's it!

Definitely SPB Backup.
Give that a shot... it's a costly bit of software... but completely worthy.
Sprite Backup is a must for anyone, especially for those who wants to do some tweaking.
sprite back up
Exactly 12 hours ago my Leo 's sence stopped launching and I was in a horrible time.I had collected 79 nice opera bookmarks and doing a hard reset should clean all of them !
spb back up was not the solution ,cause it can't back up favourites.and Microsoft my phone couldn't sync cause the wi-fi was dead ! so I beamed up Sprite back up tool from my old Hd .
and it selected percisely what I wanted...I think spb phone plus or suit has the same function for backing up favourites but SPRITE is perfect.
I want to back up my hd2 too, can anyone tell me how to use Activesync for backing up plz
Hi,
i think you can't use AS for backup. You could copy all the user-data and programm folders but not the registry entries. You need special backup software for this purpose. I know Spb Backup and Sprite. Although i ve registered bith i mainlay use Spb because it works better for me. I think it is worth his money.

Re: HD2 backup
Personally I store everything on the storage card - and use Jeyo Mobile Companion to backup and restore contacts, sms, call history etc prior to flashing... works like a charm...
And in conjunction with Microsoft My Phone - never lost anything so far... even able to recover my business mobile while roaming...

As with Android you need to set up a GMail account, so you can access the app market.
Set up a new exchange e-mail account on your WinMo phone - Use the details you used in the GMail account. Once it is set up, the GMail account will pick up your contacts when you sync the phone (via the phone's Activesync).
When you go into Android sync your Gmail account.

if you use hotmail, just use activesync/exchange connection on your android
I got a question, when you install the wp7 on the HD2, do you also lose files from the internal memory? like the camera software or the album software or everything from internal memory?
so which backup file can i use to save all those folders and files?
I tried SPB.
Downloaded it ok.
Ran it ok.
Then at the end of the process it crashed the phone.
Booted but sense wouldn't load at all. Start worked but irratic and laggy, settings didn't open.
Tried numerous soft resets but nothing worked.
Did a hard reset and used Microsoft MyPhone to restore contacts, tasks, SMS and calendar all perfect apart from havingbto resync contacts with facebook.
I did have to download all my apps and mods again and confit email etc. A real pain but didn't loose anything valuable,
MyPhone very useful and free.

Hello,
I use spb backup for over a year and it works more that perfect.
Maybe you are doing something wrong (although I can not imagine what can go wrong in such an easy installation). I have used it for numerous backups and restores. No problem at all. Spb Backup is Highly Recommended.
Regards,
John
