Hello there, I hope I have got this in the right forum.
I have been perusing the forums, and you seem like a nice helpful bunch, so I thought I would pass some questions your way.
I am really interested in getting the Orange SPV M600 phone/pda as it has all the features I am looking for. I just have a few worries about usability.
Firstly - is it easy to send texts? I could just see typing on a touch screen quite hard, and I send quite a few texts. Can you write them using the keypad style keyboards (not qwerty, the sort on normal mobiles)? I can imagine on a small screen a qwerty keyboard would be awkward to do - it would be nice if I didn't need a stylus and could just use my fingers.
Secondly - Is it easy to make calls? I know these are very basic questions, but I haven't really read a review that answered them.
I make quite a few calls and I would like to be able to easily access my contacts quickly and without having to use a stylus also.
Lastly - what are your opinions on the phone? Do you like it? Wish you had gone with another / recommend another over it?
Cheers for your time...
I have the M600 and while I don't do hundreds of texts a month I do a fair number. You have the choice of using several different input methods, two of the easiest are probably the keyboard (QWERTY) on screen keyboard, which when you get used to tapping away can be very quick, although may not be so easy if you are on the move as the keys are fairly small. Second you have the PhonePad which is akin to a normal phone keyboard and gives you T9 (or ABC/123) input. If you are at a PC you can also use something like Pocket Controller to give you a view of your Pocket PC on your PC and you can also type from your PC making writing texts very quick.
In answer to your second question, making calls is very easy. From anyhwere pressing the Phone answer button takes you to the phone and from here you can use speed dial, access your call history, your entire contacts list and if you start typing a number you get a filter of your contacts. For me the phone works pretty well. Size wise as a phone I find the M600 pretty good - at least you dont feel like you are holding a brick to your head like when using an XDA2... One of the main differences you may find to a traditional phone is that you need to be very careful if carying it in your trouser pocket - it would be pretty easy to break/scratch the screen - so never put your car keys in the same pocket... I just use the standard case (with the belt clip removed) and this works pretty well for me, although I am always careful.
Personally, I love this device (although I had the Jam before and loved this). I don't watch movies, or use Skype on it and I find the performance really good and the battery life is very good as well. One handed use has been massively improved and the soft keys help a lot with quick and simple navigation. For me this is my alarm clock, diary, phone, sat nav...
Excellent post! Just what I needed to know.
I have read on lots of forums that the processor is really slow and a lot of people have been complaining about it, but I won't be using skype, and I doubt msn on my phone as you say, just viewing docs, sending texts, calls, using the calendar etc.
One other question that springs to mind: What is the synchronisation like with the PC?
If I have my calendar on my phone, does it synchronise well with outlook or whatever?
Oh, and just to keep you all interested, one more question, I want to hear you arguments and reasoning for your choice:
Should I be getting the SVC M600 or the SPV M3100?
As said before, I am looking for something that functions really well as a phone, is reasonably small and compact, but has the added extras of wifi, decent calendar that synchronizes, word doc viewer etc.
Cheers...
PS. Or even the SPV M1500

If you find it a bit slow, go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=55782
The OC tool provided there really works well. Skype will work just fine with this too.

Sychronisation works great using ActiveSync 4.1. Yes, it synchronizes with OutLook. If you don't have OutLook, it's provided on a CD in the box.
SPV M3100? Not familiar with that one.
I have the M600 and I'm really pleased with it. 8)
Hi, Ihave the german O2 XDA Neo and finally it's the best cell i ever own! It's very comfortable to use the phone, more than a SE k750i or my Motorola SLVR!
I don't like the PhonePad T9 for writing long texts; if you don't want to use the stylus I recommend you the FullScreenKeyboard bei Spb http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/fsk/?de
All great stuff guys, keep it coming!
Thanks very much
WOW!

I still want one though..... 8)
Yea I know!
I am going to go into the orange shop tomorrow and try them both out. Have a feel of them in my hand / pocket, see if they are too bulky etc
I will get back to you on it 8)
Just to update this thread as well:
Well the poeple in the orange shop said that they didn't have any in yet to look at, and guessed it would be later that week that they got some...
Ok, I just picked up a cingular 8525 today and had a few questions I wanted to ask you guys.
First, I was told there is a program out there that closes down the programs when you click the x instead of minimizing it. Where can I find this program?
Second, is there an AIM client for this phone that I can get somewhere? Is it free? Please post any links for that.
Third, do any of you have any second thoughts about putting the phone directly in your pocket with nothing else in there? I am wondering how safe it is for this phone to be in just a pocket. I was looking at perhaps one of those hard metal cases for it, but as a student and person I like my phone in my pocket. What solutions can you folks offer?
Thanks a lot

Here's a few mostly freeware. Lots of rubbish in these but some maybe worth it. Better ones, say doom etc just lookup with WM5 (or windows CE) added into a search on Google.

if you tick and hold on the file it will bring up your options like copy/paste, etc.. it will also give you the option to set as ringtone

Keep my new Cingular 8525 in my pocket with my Monaco Aluminum Case from Dealone. No problems, all buttons accessible and if keyboard is needed, simply pop open cover and slide top forward. Black in color. I really like the protection and peace of mind this case gives.

If you put the MP3 file in \Windows\Rings it will show in your list of available ringtones.

This is right of course, as is shogunmarks solution of :"if you tick and hold on the file it will bring up your options like copy/paste, etc.. it will also give you the option to set as ringtone"
Either way I prefer to keep my ringtone in device memory rather than storage card. The reason for this is that I, along with some others have discovered that storing on SD card can cause freezing when phone rings or a lengthy delay before phone begins to ring. Some others have also reported that mp3s, particularly larger file sized ones can also cause delays. On this matter I tend to stick to basic short file sized Windows Audio fornatted tones just to ensure as rapid a response from the phone as possible when calls come in. (Not very adventurous I know, but still...)

I don't disagree with you. I could have been clearer in what I said. It is possible to put ring tones on storage card and assign them without obviously putting them in the rings folder or using your way of getting them there. All I meant to do was issue a cautionary note about lengthy ring tones in non windows audio format being stored on SD card - this warning Does NOT apply to your method of assigning the ringtone.
Hope this clarifies - mind you reading it I'm not so sure!

Good app. to connect to and see available wifi networks
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/
Wifi on radar type screen or list view (good to look at but doesn't really help to connect) If you are GPS enabled it shows remarkable true radar type image of networks around. With no GPS you still get radar but really only illusion of radar as it tells distance only not direction. Looks good though.

As for cleaning screen I just use a tissue barely more than damp without any chemicals - seems to work ok.

Are you sure they arent on the sim card?
Use the VGA output cable to attach your Athena to a monitor. It should default to either VGA output or Composite if i remember right. The keyboard will help you navigate the menus. Use pim backup within the device to save your contacts to your sim card.
You 've solutions in our wiki :
- use Pocket Controler : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...d new SOTi Pocket Controller Professional 6.0
-use My Mobiler :http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...retty good, free (!) handheld controller tool

IS there anyone that knows how much it will cost for a new screen?
When I´m trying the buttons it gives me changes on the screen.
So. I think it´s only the screen and the frames that is damaged.
your lcd and touchscreen are both screwed THIS is the only one ive seen commercially and it's not cheap. Might be worth checking if you're insured...
1 881,05$ Did I pay for my phone in my Country.
I´m not insured for this kind of stuff.
So I need to fix it by my own.
I can send it to the company I bought it from and pay them to fix it.
But if there is a cheaper way, then I want to try it.
Damn my english is bad So don´t shoot me
can you have the screen automaticaly rotate according to the way you hold the phone in your hand (landscape or portrait ) on an HTC TOUCH ?
does the touch have the necesary hardware for this and is there a third party app out there for it ?
thanks
ps: funny how I have this feature on my Canon SD750 digital camera but I do not have it on my pocket pc...
not it require hardware support
software is really kinda like a recipi for what actions should be given when input
comes and the hardware is the input
that's what I thought...too bad.
thank you for your fast reply Rudegar
Possible temp solution
Install Spb Pocket Plus 4 or something that will give you a rotate screen app. Then install fTouchFlo (with config program) and change the up - down gesture to run the screen rotate app. (Any app you can equip to the buttons in settings can be found and set in FTouchflo Config)
Just a thought.
Hope this helps..PS the free version of fTouchFlo can be found on the forum.. Then you can rotate the screen with a quick up - down gesture.
diigibio
thanks for the tip diigibio but it still not what I'm looking for.
what you are suggesting is very similar to placing and small icon on your today sreen for screen rotation.
i wanted the "automatic" rotation that the iPhone and my Canon SD750 have.
I guess it's the "cool" factor
thanks again though.

nice thinking but from what i think, your screen would automatically start to rotate as you're walking around under trees or through buildings and different rooms.
will this iphoneish screen rotation thingy work for the t mobile wing? if so where could I get it and do I go about installing it...thank u
in 2006 i bought on eBay in honk kong a phonewho have this hardware detection !
so apple dont image it !
rofl guys even nokia 5500 sport and some kinda older model of samsung had accelerometers, it's quite old technology, but now i even heard people calling an ordinary accelerometer a "Gravity sesnsor" stupid iphone madness
i deeply like the specification, but after i was flexible with my diamond's direction button, i was confucing with Touch HD, no direction button.
not every software can use like Oprea's touch feeling, many of the application do not support scroll.
guys, what did you think about the no direction button?
I think youll only miss it when you want to play certain games.
In fact this is one thing (absence of a d-pad) which is making me even consider the Xperia.
I use spreadsheets a lot. I really don't know how effieient it would be to use spreadsheets without a d-pad
Other small things such as using the smart dialer to send SMS messages. I just imagine when you press a few keys on the smart dialer and have a list of contacts how do you select a contact to send a text message to. I believe as soon as you touch the contact with your finger it will start dialing
I use the D pad to control audio, without having to pull out my device from my pants pocket. With the HD, I am giving that up, it's a huge negative. But I'm still going to go for it, love that big screen. If I had bought a iTouch or iPhone, I would have the same problem. Just figure out if you're willing to give it up or not.

There is a blue tooth headset clip that has the controls on it, and you plug in your headphone into the unit. We will have to see if you can plug into the 3.5mm plug and still use the BT device just for controls. That would be best of both worlds.

I want to be able to play "most" games ...

No you wouldn't - the iPhone has a dedicated volume control on the side, and a remote button for track skipping etc on the headset
I can honestly say that after a week with the iPhone, and an interface that's actually designed 100% around the touchscreen, I've never once missed the d-pad for anything. I doubt the same would be true of the Touch HD.

SRMZ, +1
I still cannot decide which model to choose - X1 or HD - and now I am thinking more and more of getting an X1. I simply understand that the only thing about HD that I am going to really love and cream-my-pants because of is the 3.8" screen.
I think that HD is a perfect device for non-WM-addicts, for people who will use just TF3D-interface and Opera at most, without installing any tweaks/programs/registry-hacks/emulators/debuggers/consoles/younameit. Cause when you want to install one of them, you're in trouble - no hardware keys, no D-pad... Achtung!
One more thing I thought about.. Every phone has a kind of a "secret combination of keys", e g "turn-on-the-phone-holding-two-buttons-pressed-and-enter-diagnostics-mode". I wonder if the sensor buttons would do that?

Hrmmm....I was under the impression that the button area at the bottom of the phone (where the 4 buttons are) was touch sensetive and could be used for scrolling similar to diamond....is this not the case? That thing about not being able to scroll through call history scares me.....

Yes, it's called distance selling regulations or DSR. If you're unhappy with anything you've brought in the past 14 days unseen (ie mail order or online) you can return it under DSR. I believe they are allow to ask for a restocking fee but it can't be anymore than a certain % of the device cost. Google DSR for more info.
I'm very put off by the lack of hardware buttons. This phone can only be used two handed. If it had the same hardware buttons as the Hermes and Kaiser it'd be a killer device.

Dear Sir,
May I please have some of the coolaid you are drinking? The Touch HD occupies similar dimensions to that of an iphone....the iphone can be used with one hand - I do so on a regular basis - therefore what is it that has convinced you that one handed operation is not supported?
