Device Emulator - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
Is there a way to make specific device ROM's compatible with Microsoft's Device Emulator? I saw MS uses BIN files and they are not the same as an NBF file. I assume some modification has to be done as the GSM module will not work?
TIA, Cheers,

Extract Files from ROM???

Does anyone know if there is a way to extract files from ROM? Since we can add files via MKROM is there a way to either extract files from the ROM or the .nbf or .nb1 files?
yes, just use the dumprom utility but remember you wont be able to pack them all back in for the compress.dll is not being utlized yet.
You can get dumprom for win32 here http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/dumprom.html
Dont forget dumprom can extract files from 4.x roms with the '-4' commandline option.
What I would like to do, if possible, is to extract the files that makeup IE in the 4.00.10 version and then load them into an SPHi700 running the 2002 ROM. Then change the registry keys and see if it will work. It appears that there are only two files required though there might be more. If it needs API calls and entry points in the OS that are not there in 2002 then it wouldn't work. Otherwise I would have an upgraded IE in the 2002 SPHi700.
Any idea if I can do this and if it will work?
Hi Barjohn. Thanks for the info regarding the "g" and I have found a rom of .05 that it works with.
As far as taking IE from .10 to ppc2002 I don't think it will work. The architecture appears to be different, as well as the registry structure. Something like Win98 to WinXP.
Just my .02 but that is what I have been reading online.

Java Midlet Question

I really want to use a name picker (randomly picks a name from a pre-defined list)
Google reveals this java version is exactly what I need for a desktop
Is there any way I can use it on the pocket pc (does not work in midlet manager)
http://www.davebsoft.com/jaws/apps/namepicker.jnlp
You normally need a jar version of the program to work with midlet manager - best you do a search for a jar version.
The author kindly sent me his JAR file for this app. I have placed it onto my device but cannot open it
Is it incompatable or am I making a silly mistake
Thanks
Hays
Is that the zip he sent you or did you send you a jar file? Even when i rename it namepicker.jar it wont install, i am sure there is something wrong with the file.

he sent this text in his email
The jar file is here, but it probably isn't set up the way you need it:
http://davebsoft.com/jaws/apps/lib/namepicker.jar
I downloaded it but can't get it working
yep - still says invalid - contact the author again he must have a valid jar that works
will do
thanks for your help
the author replied
"invalid" in what context? It's valid in the context in which you've been
running it on your PC or whatever. Maybe it lacks a manifest file or
something. There are free tool to extract and rebuild jar files.
The message it gives is that it has an 'invalid java application desciptor' i.e. the jad part of the jar is wrong.
just a guess, but its probably made for jave for desktops, not j2me.
OMG. The Java that is written is for PC (or eqv) Java not for Java for phone (eg. midlet). That's why it doesn't run. Midlet is a very small subset of the real Java, the code is different, and there isn't much function in midlet version of java, and it is a pain to program in midlet-java (whatever you call it). Hence the JAR is not working. Try running it on your PC, it will work.
No, you can't extract it and run it on your midlet-enabled phone. No, even if you have the source, you can't do that either, unless you translate the code manually. I don't think there is a converter for that matter, especially it involved GUI.
That explains it
Anyone up for the challenge of writing a good pocket pc version ??

Try this one...
This is an OSS JVM that's meant to be J2SE compliant so it might just run. Try your luck.

MS device emulator HTC wizard rom-Convert nbf to nb0

Hi all.
I started using MSDevice emulator v1.0 to check some programs before I put them on my QTEK.
Atm,I'm trying to install the OS from Faria rom to the device emulator.
The emulator uses images *.nb0 and I'm having *.nbf rom
The tool on the FTP site (nb2nbf) does the exact opposite thing from what I want .
Can someone tell me how I can extract the nb file from eg Farias rom? {edit -found correct programs -check below}
Will farias hacks & customizations work ?
Is the device emulator a reliable program to test applications?
Also, I found somewhere in the internet some skins/localisations for the qtek for using in the dev emul but I can't remember where. I'd appreciate if someone could post a link.
Thanks
Note to moderators :I wouldn't like to add these kind of questions on the Windows mobile specific topic because I'm interested more in reliable wizard emulation. If you think I posted in the wrong place you can move it somewhere more appropriate . Thanks again

This is the exact information i need to find out. Can someone give me a good start on how to do it?
Im using MS Device Emulator v1.0. All Cooked ROMs I find have the .nbf format and the emulator asks for .nb0 format.
there is no problem 2 convert nbf to nb0( or nb or nba format) all you need is HTC64_Extended_ROM_Tool.exe (wiki or ftp). but other thing is to convert it to the "right" m$hits format. i dont think there is a way yet. maybe, i didnt try it thru tadzio's imgfs extraction utility (as to my knowlegde the ony one tool capable to extract m$hits emulator imgs) maybe its capable of compiling one.
Saw the lifehacker post http://lifehacker.com/395266/windows-mobile-emulator-tests-phone-apps-on-your-desktop
and wanted to test out some custom roms on my pc before installing. I've tried to convert .nbh files to .nb with dutty's tool, but the emulator won't accept it. Was there any progress on getting this to work?
There is a Emulator ROM Kitchen. Check out my sig.
A tool for converting nbh 2 bin /nb0

Your Kitchen is for cooking and then emulating. You cant emulate the cooked nbh roms. Or?
We need an emulator for cooked roms. Or a tool for converting nbh files to bin or nb0 with "right" m$hit format.
Actually the roms which your kitchen creates can be emulated with MS Device Emulator, but your kitchen needs a bin rom to create a new rom, so its not useful.
Any solutions?
Hello folks is there any progress with booting up the nbh cooked rom inside emulator please ? Thanks.

Microsoft Device Emulator and RUU_signed images

dear all,
is it possible to use RUU_signed.nbh with Microsoft Device Emulator to test the cooked images before deploying to the physical device,
Microsoft Device Emulator needs nb0 or bin files but when extracting the os from the.nbh file it still not readable for Microsoft Device Emulator
hope someone could advise a solution
regards,

I think it's possible to create a bin from the nb, try a good search..
