Help please. New xda mini s and tomtom. - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I'm a bit confused here. I have the new xda mini s and tomtom 5 which works fine on my mitac and xda 2. I tried installing on the mini s and it crashes.
My question is simple. Is it a pda or a smartphone. There are version of tomtom for pda and smartphone, but the tomtom site seems to call it a smartphone because of the os. I was more than happy with ppc 2003 and wish it was on the mini s as I don't like the lack of backup in activesync. A major oversight in my opinion. Other than that, I really like the mini s and find it much more usable as a phone than either of my previous xda's.
Any help is appreciated in advance.

It's a PDA and you want TomTom Navigator and NOT TomTom Mobile.

You may want to do a search on tomtom and WM5 in the forum; i remember seeing a few posts on this.

tom tom 5.2
if you do get tom tom 5 you must make sure that you upgrade to version 5.2 however it will not sync with the mini s, so you must do it externally i.e. with a card reader and it will work fine. Hope that this helps.

Tried all that, now what.
Thanks again for the replies.
I have got to various stages in making it work, the best being to get to the select voice stage whereupon it hangs and does nothing. Soft reset time again. I have read that the voice is in the wrong folder, but where exactly is it suppossed to be. It works if I test it before selecting it. It only hangs when I actually select the voice. I have tried using a reg editor to remove everything, but there is nothing in the registry referring to tomtom when I remove it using the remove programs feature. Several attempts have made no difference.
Is 5.21 the official tomtom patch which is supposed to properly support windows mobile 5 and the xda mini s. In the list of compatible devices there is no mention of the mini s, but the mda vario is there. Is this different somehow?.
I have tried this on my mitac and xda2, but work fine without problems. Its only the mini s which won't have it. Everyone I know also has no problem with PPC and the 5.21 update, only problem being with anyone having a mini s. Have we gone backwards by trying to go forwards.
Other than that, I really like the phone and think it would be the best yet if everything was properly supported. Faster would be nice, but its not bad now I've followed the advice on here and stopped all the crap from loading. As always, thanks in advance for any help.

I have exactly the same problem as you ripz69.
So close to ditching the a to z, but then so far!
Hope someone can help us get it sorted.

5.21 works fine on mine, but the setup.exe doesn't. Had to manually run the four cab files to get it installed.

tomtom 5.21 and mini s
I did that. Installed the cabs manually and it locked up. Installed from the pc and it locked up. Although I haven't done a hard reset, I have scoured the registry and there is nothing in there relating to tomtom after removing it prior to trying another method. Maybe its just mine, but I doubt it.
It can't be just me as my efforts over the last few days have revealed it to be a common problem despite the new release from tomtom supposedly supporting windows mobile 5. Its not the only program to have problems. I have also used a later version of vbar (0.40 instead of 0.23) which works better, and my favoured batmemtime has been replaced with another (less colourfull) version of something which does almost the same thing. Things are much better now except for tomtom.
I have had this thing about a week now and have done a number of hard resets to try different configurations after reading the threads on this site regarding the best ways of making it run at a decent speed. This was easily done before the removal of the backup and restore facility from activesync as it was easy enough to get it back to the state of play before messing with it. I don't understand the reasoning behind the removal of this facility, and know of no other program that allows you to restore the thing to a working state (as reliably as a/sync) without a full re-installation of stuff.
As much as I like it, I see times ahead when I sit here frustrated at yet another crash. I can only hope that Microsoft see the mistake of omitting the restore facility from a/sync and replace it in a future release. I have to say that my confidence in the robustness of windows mobile 5 in the mini s is less than it was in my xda2 or even the 1, mainly because of the a/sync issue.
At the risk of repeating myself yet again, I only wish Psion had entered the pocket pc market as several years with a mine were virtually trouble free. Will it even be the case with Microsoft.
Somehow, I doubt it.
TIA

i have just come across the same problem, anyone found a fix to this?
cheers

Copy the "TomTom" folder that contains Munich.bin and data.chk (probably several other files as well) from your storage card to the "My Documents folder on the XDA.
This will fix the hanging at voice selection problem.
Make sure you copy not cut the folder though.

This continues to be a big headache for WM5 users
You could try this step by step guide on 4WinMobile

see if this helps, it got 2 people going.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39074

one things need notice, make sure the path in currentmap.dat is same as your map location in your sd. you can use ultraedit-32 check the currentmap.dat and change the map path.

Success
Thanks to all the suggestions, its now working. I seem to have sussed everything including theb bluetooth gps problem. It starts the bluetooth driver when I start tomtom and stops it when I exit. Perfect.
I had to do the reg thing and copy the tomtom folder as seggested, but I'm just glad to see it work. Thanks to all who helped with the brains. I'm so glad I found this place (as is my mate who now has his working too, thanks to what I have learned here).
Now if only Microsoft will give us a proper backup and restore feature for Windows mobile 5. That would be the icing on the cake.
Cheers all.

One upon a time....

I use to have a XDA 2 (well, SPV M1000) and (the important thing) a folder named "My XDA 2 must have". The software I use most, the software to backup, the software to keep not only to try. Like:
1. Sprite Backup
2. Visual IT Rough Guide to London (like A-Z map to central London + extras)
3. Splash ID
and not last
4. TomTom 5 .... and others that I miss already.
And THEN, here it is, I waited so long for it, (Exec) that I decided to switch from Orange, to O2, (Orange don't have this even now). Three days of "testing"...Well the device is great....Windows 5 isn't. (At least for me.)
My folder (My XDA 2 must have) is now "The software that doesn't work on WM5" ...None of the four named programs work...it takes ages to charge, it's slow, everything has changed...and how about that 'program' included "Clear Storage"??!!!
I thought it was something like remove programs, not a bloody HARD RESET!
Everything seems to say about Windows 5.....WHY FIX IT IF IT AIN'T BROKEN??!!!
BTW: Does anybody know a decent Wi-Fi Connections Manager that WORKS?? (Hitchhiker crashes my Exec, Retina Scanner wants to know what my socks size is when registering, Wi-Fi Companion Doesn't Install in WM5.........)
I am glad I didn't sell my SPV M1000 yet....but I want to....I love the Exec, but hate what it does...or rather what it doesn't!
..............helps us all !!!
You seem surprised that a major version upgrade (WM2003 to WM5) comes with occasional problems. Didn't we see the same when we changed from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95?
Later versions of desktop operating systems have some backwards compatibility built in, but with the limited resources of the PPC platform I guess they couldn't achieve everything.
We may not know what they are yet , but I'm sure WM5 has built-in features that drive the platform on another big leap and over time we'll take them for granted. I looked at my XDA2 last night (now two days-worth of dust gathering on it) and was reminded how fast it responded to commands, but it looked dated already compared with my shiny new Exec.
Don't forget, we're early adopters of WM5 and we're always going to have problems. When ROM upgrades are released and developers get new versions out for us, we'll wonder how we ever lived without it!
In case you haven't seen it yet, there's a thread running over at www.tekguru.co.uk listing the software that works perfectly on WM5. I found it useful when looking for replacements for my old WM2003 versions.
I have #2 and #4 working (for #4 you need TT 5.1 - d/l the update from their site)
Reinstall from fresh I reckon. And you are using activesync 4 not 3.8 still?
I agree with SiliconS.. I'm always wanting the very latest of everything (hardware and software) and to be honest, I'm surprised how good windows mobile 5 is!
There are many problems, like icons disappearing and speed etc..but they're not life threatening.
I only hope that the providers are going to keep up with the developers and release their specific patches..if not then I'll have to convert to the Jasjar rom
I love the MDA PRO even with it's problems.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll try these options as well.
BTW, anyone has any problems with the AvantGo software?

This is real? had you used and work with restores?
Thanks.
From the Sprite Backup developers website:
"Sprite Backup is only compatible with devices using Windows Mobile 2002 and 2003. Windows Mobile 2005 devices cannot use Sprite Backup. We will be releasing a new version that will be compatible with these devices in the near future. Please keep visiting this site for updates."
I did try the version you mentioned but no luck. I use a Exec not a JJ...coud that be it? Thanks anyway...and damn I need a backup program...[/quote]
Here I am after another whole day of reading forums, installing and uninstalling, hard resets, trial and error....and things like that.
As far as the XDA is concerned....I feel better about it now, installed SPB Pocket Plus (works a dream), SPB Finance (great 'cuz it syncs with Quicken), and most of all, swiched to "Corporate" mode...and man, it is FAST now !!!
As mentioned before, Sprite Backup doesn't work, AvantGo works but not as it should, SplashID....nope. I did try eWallet, which works ok on the desktop but not on the XDA.
It's all good fun though.

I'm thinking that I might go for a hard reset and choose Corp, but I don't know how to set up the GPRS details. How did you get GPRS working for Corporate Mode, or haven't you needed to?
I do find the settings for all these connections v.confusing. I just want it simple, like my laptop! One connection does all...
Now that you mentioned that, I wouldn't know if I need different setting yet, as I am still on Orange for the next couple of days until they port my number. Interesting to see if it works though.
I've tried today the GPRS, G3 connection and it worked without changing anything. (In Corporate mode)

TomTom 5.2 Update - Better?

IS there much difference in performance running 5.2 instead of 5.1 on the Universal?
Is there any difference at all?
This new version has the following new features and improvements:
Improved phone functionality for your device.
TomTom NAVIGATOR is now compatible with Microsoft Windows™ MOBILE 5.0 devices.

Thanks. But TT 5.1 works fine on my EXEC without any problems already. I was wondering if there is an actual difference in experience? Because I dont want to fix what aint broken unless there are new features or a performance improvement, etc...
So has anyone with the 5.2 update installed experienced any significant improvement please??

Just tried the cracked one, and I can't see a difference against 5.1. The screen still draws visibly slowly and the UI is still as limiting and unsophisticated as ever.
I can't see any benefit in upgrading if TT is working already for you.
Looks like TomTom will be waiting a while longer to get my upgrade fee. I'm happy to upgrade legitimately from my legitimate v3, but I don't consider it to be a viable option at the moment. TomTom seem to have lost their way on PocketPC software since they are apparently unifying the software to match their TomTomGO platform. Sadly that leaves those of us with sophisticated multi-purpose devices wondering why we can't have the flexibility of version 3, in which we could keep the Windows Taskbar on the screen and actually use the damn operating system at the same time!
Not good, TomTom. Not good at all.
Thanks SiliconS.
You have no choice but to wait for the upgrade as I can't find any link to do this on their web site. Does anyone know of any other way of upgrading?
I have version 3 & I refuse to buy version 5 other than through an upgrade.
Mike
I have paid for the upgrade, but the cracked version saves having to mess around with their annoying registration system.
I find the UI clean and elegant. It allows you to quickly do what you need, without fuss. It also makes switching from other TomTom's (Go etc) easy. I find version 5 far better than 3. The maps are much improved too and include all of Europe. Easily worth the upgrade price.
(The screen update is slow in landscape mode, but fine in Portrait.)
i got this (on the wizard) and i still get the same backlight turning off when running it problem. and the hex edit doesnt work with this exe (well not the same values anyway)
thefunkygibbon, you need to hex edit the exe and find the 4 instances of backlight and change them to bbcklight.
Works great on wm5.
hack done
Tomtom 5.2 with hexa change
I have noticed no difference in operation over 5.1
The only change I can see is that it installs via active sink (sic) and ignores the instruction to install to the SD card by placing the application in RAM
not working correctly
this works for me but cant get any voices to work (i put them on the storgae card from original disk)

Yea, those bozos at TomTom excelled themselves again, didn't they?
http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=6309013&postcount=9
Apart from what was said on Howard Forums, which I agree with (clueless TomTom devs!), the update seems to add the ability to install without having to copy the CABS onto the phone.
Apart from that, no difference. If you start it up in landscape mode, it'll run in portrait mode.
One other hint that TomTom are clueless idiots - the compatibility list shows the Jasjar and the MDA Pro as being compatible. However, when I requested an activation code from them they insisted the M5000 was not compatible. They wouldn't accept that the M5000 and the XDA Exec were the same hardware and base image!
In tomtom V5.21 better bluetooth management and u can install directly by activesync with WM2005. For the voices you must to install with the original disk and then you can choise the voices otherwise copy tomtom directory contain the voices in "my documents"

Precisely. Activesync install was the one obvious thing they had to fix, and they cocked it up. Funny how every other WM5 developer in the world seems to manage it.

Precisely. Broken landscape mode. No support for soft buttons. So what's this magical support for WM5? Everything works the same (or doesn't) as in 5.1.

Yes, but the morons f*cked up the code so it won't install to the Storage Card. One CAB doesn't ask, the 2nd CAB asks but ignores your answer. So unless you move everything by hand with File Explorer, that's 3MB of your precious main memory wasted. Don't forget it's your money that's paying them to write that crap.

I give up..........

Well, it looks like I will be disposing of my O2 Mini S because try as I might, I can't get TomTom to work with it.
I've tried a myriad of things from these forums to get it working, but nothing seems to do the trick. I can't even get the software to install properly, let alone run! (And yes, I've dropped the .CAB files on the SD card - three run properly, the 4th tells me it hasn't installed correctly.
I played with the registry - which scares the bejesus out of me to be honest!
I need a PDA that does everything - which to be honest, I thought the Mini S was.
So, I give up. I think I'll go back to my Dell Axim X5!
I think I'll sit in the corner and sulk now!
See ya!
Did you start this thread just to piss and moan, or were you going to tell us what the problem is installing TomTom so we might help? If the former, don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.

As far as I know, no amount of sulking or installing will make tomtom work straight from the dvd. For me, it always crashed on my windows pc, when I launched the program installer (not for the maps, but for the actual tomtom software).
What I HAD to do was download a patched 5.21 from their website. That worked like a charm. I installed tomtom to the main memory and the maps to the storage card. After which there was a voice missing and I had to install any voice with the installer program before being able to complete the tomtom setup wizard on my wizard (heh).
Hope you can make it work. I am running the KJAM rom with push email and other neat stuff. Had to "hack" (unlock) my Finnish Qtec 9100 to make it work.

Making the Advantage really work..

Hi everyone,
Well, I finally made the plunge and am loving my HTC Advantage. Truly delightful. I'm slowly making progress but there but I have a few issues that perhaps someone can help me with.
--Note: I am on TMo USA and migrating from a MDA (Wizard), just couldn't find any love for the "Wing".
--Also note that I have thoroughly read this forum and tried everything I can find. Also lots of googling.
1. I am running MrVRealVGA as widely recommended. This is great, and I've got lots of things working. EXCEPT:
a. I've tried the suggested skins for the dialpad, but none are at all functional with RealVGA. Any suggestions?
b. Likewise, hard to find a good Wisbar skin. I have one that "mostly" works (SWDeluxe) but the folder icons are way big, as are the icons on the task menu.
c. The Comm Manager is also an issue, but I use PhoneAlarm which can mostly handle these chores. I'm using the SWDeluxe theme which looks pretty good.
2. Buttons. I would really like to add additional assignments to the OK and Start buttons since they are so handy. Neither AEBPlus or DoubleLauncher seem to be able to work with those. Any suggestions?
3. I am having the same problems with GPS as others report. Will try iGuidance tomorrow, see if I can get any love. No luck at all with Google Maps. Will report back...
4. Also no luck with TV Out using the 4-in-1 cable; but I haven't really spent enough time mucking around.
Otherwise, the transition has really been easy. The keyboard is not as bad as some suggest, although backlighting would be a plus. Browsing the internet is great and VueFlo is "interesting." Solid signal reception (GPRS and WiFi) compared to the Wizard, and it seems reasonably responsive, even with VGA. And that huge, bright screen is great!!!
After lurking on this forum for a few weeks, I'm glad to now be a full-fledged member!
OK, I got the answer to question #1a, from another thread. VijayBigPhone does the job! Nice solution from one of my heroes!
Welcome to the boards, I would suggest for number 4 you just need to play around with it a little more.
I just tried mine then and love it, quickly connected it to the LCDTV (VGA input) then settings, TVOUT > On > VGA output > OK > LCDTV in PC Mode > Voila....beyond presentations I didnt think it would be a worthwhile feature, but I might I actually read ebooks now that I can see them in full glory of 5" VGA (which is nice) or 32" LCDTV.

I'm happy to report success with iGuidance. It would not autodetect GPS, but I manually selected Port 5 and it did work. Acquisition is not as quick as I was used to with my external hockey puck. Seems to be a cold boot each time. On the other hand... no time for trying to find where I put my hockey puck the last time, no time for setup, charger, etc., and no messing around with BT connections, so this will definitely work!
Still no luck with Google Maps.

I will answer my own question (in case anyone else has the same problem.)
I received an email back from iNav Tech Support saying:
Please make sure you have installed the appropriate map file on a SD card. W/o a working map, iguidance program can't be launched.
Also, there may be the same gprs conflict between iguidance and your new ppc phone. To determine if this is the case, try turning off the gprs/evdo wireless data connection on your new ppc phone first and then launch iguidance again. If it launches fine, then you may turn your gprs/evdo connection back on.

I had already installed iNav maps on my SD card.
I installed the iGuidance program on the SD card. It wouldn't run. So, I set my Advantage to Flight Mode, and tried again. Sure enough, iGuidance started right up. I turned Flight Mode off, and iGuidance ran normally. Now, iguidance will start up without having to shut down the wireless connections.
I still would be interested in feedback from anyone who has upgraded to version 4 of iGuidance. Is the upgrade worth the expense? Have you noted any significant changes in the program?
Re: Iguidance - another option
I have 'Destinator' installed and running with no problems on my X7501. I note that IGuidance may no longer be selling maps for Europe although this may only be in the USA. I used Destinator in the UK on my Dell Axim this summer and in the USA earlier this month on my Advantage.
Brad Miter
For those of you using iNav...the shortcut for iNav points to a "starter application" that detects the resolution, chooses the VGA or QVGA version to run, and deletes the other version. This can cause problems if you use RealVGA and later change the system resolution, as the appropriate executable has been deleted. The solution is to use a File Manager and change the attributes to "Read Only" for the VGA and QVGA iNav applications.
Also, if you use 128dpi and iNav...the starter will open the VGA version, but the QVGA menus work better in 128dpi. For this resolution I created a shortcut that directly points to the QVGA version.

Open Google Maps...Menu--Options--Track Location Settings. Select Set by Windows if you are using the WinMo External GPS applet. Select Set Manually and set your com port/baud rate (Com 5/9600 for x7501) if you are not allowing WinMo to control the GPS. I have Google Maps installed to Main Memory.
That having all been said, I find that Windows Live just plain works better, and allows me to set the map cache to the SD card.
Enjoy.

I have had no issues with Google Maps other than the location off, but until I discovered Com 5 using the HTC GPS Tool, I couldn't get any of my other applications to use GPS. Having discovered Com 5, GPS is working just fine. Though I would like to figure out how to GPS stamp my photos - I don't have a P10 in my registry for the camera.
Google maps has been working for ages.
You can easily enable the GPS photo by using schaps advanced configuration tool version 2.
If you use michys roms you can install this over Schap advanced config3.
Hope this helps

TomTom on this phone?

How do I install TomTom on this phone? I have tried to install from a cab file that I used successfully on a Touch Pro but the installation fails on the Touch2 reporting the application as incompatible.
Can you please point to a TomTom cab file that works with WM6.5?
Even better if it is a version where I can activate a free local map as in fact that's all is need on this phone....
Thanks.
There are certain sources that provide QVGA cabs, google is your friend.
The QVGA version easily found googling has problems with WM6.5: it screws the Bluetooth stack.
Ah that explains why my bluetooth isnt working anymore, well Navigation is more useful then bluetooth for me.

Do this and both bluetooth and tomtom will work.
i didn't have a problem with tomtom 7 installing on the htc touch 2 aka mega.
I even got it working with my external gps. so bluetooth doesn't stop working with my cellphone. I will try tomtom 7 + bluetooth external GPS + Bluetooth earphone this evening to test if even that will work

You can make the visual map screen bigger by selecting less elements in the statusbar....I use only remaining distance, arrival time and speed.....
Also the colorscheme you use makes quite a difference in visibility...can recommend you "default contrast" for the day and Vapno for the night. Via TomTom website many many schemes available.

Trouble installing Navigator 7
I have a Touch 2 with Windows 6.5 and recently bought Tomtom Navigator 7 on a memory card from Handtec. I had trouble getting it to install so here are my notes & instructions which I hope will help others in future.
The Tomtom web site says that the Touch 2 is compatible with Navigator 7 but when I tried to install the software it said my device was incompatible with the version of software. Strangely, given that Navigator 7 is supposed to be new, the newest “modified” date of any of the software on the memory card is June 2009, more than a year ago.
I logged a question with Tomtom support after logging into my account on their web site. After asking me to send them a copy of my invoice for purchasing Navigator 7 they said there was a software update ttn7.zip which I could download from the web site. The support response was very prompt – less than half an hour – but their installation instructions were poor and it took several rounds of questioning to figure out what actually had to be done.
I had copied the contents of the Tomtom memory card on to my own card. The correct instructions for the update are as follows:
- with ttn7.zip downloaded from Tomtom and on the PC, click on it in Windows Explorer to display the contents.
- This is a folder called ttn7. Click on it again in Windows Explorer to display the contents.
- You will see two items – start.exe and a folder called “2577”
- Delete the existing folder “2577” on the memory card (which had been copied from the Tomtom memory card earlier
- copy the new “2577” folder from the Tomtom download on to the memory card so it takes the place of the old “2577”
- there is no need to copy start, exe as a version with the same date is on the memory card
- With the Touch 2 off, load the memory card
- Power the Touch 2 on.
- During the power up process the Tomtom software will auto-install
- Worryingly my Touch 2 gave the same old warning message that the device is incompatible with the version of the Navigator but the installation process ignored this and carried on.
- Tomtom will prompt for the usual installation questions including the activation code that came on a sheet of paper with the memory card
- From now on it’s a case of answering the questions and configuring the various options to taste. Navigator 7 seems to work fine although I haven’t taken it out in the car yet.
