tomtom5 no ports - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

hi all. im having problems here. i loaded tomtom5 on to my xda. its was working for a while but seems to have just stopped. i have a wired unit in place but tomtom is just saying no gps device found. it gets stranger. i have a satalite programe to check to see how many sats it can find. but that wont let me connect to any ports on the xda,. its just says the port is being used, how do i free a port up to use or find out whats using the ports......please help as im pulling my hair out here

Maybe the standard solution that has pointed out several times here in the forum and is also available on the TomTom Support FAQ.....
Have you disabled beam?
If not, do so, that is blocking normaly the COM 1
Stefan

think i may have found the problem. just dont know how to solve it. i am running on radio version 4.21.00 at the moment and i have the beam turned off. my gps device is now being picked up by the unit but i am still not getting a valid gps signal. when i try and configure the unit i get 3 staalites but it still says " no vaild gps signal." can you suggetst anything i can try. any help would be brilliant
many thanks
dennis

This Problem has nothing to do with the ROM or the Radio.
It´s a problem of your GPS-System.
Have you tried a different location of your GPS Receiver?
Not 100% sure, but i thougt that 3 sattelites are not good, but should be enough to navigate....
In my car i have most time 7 satellites available....
Stefan

hi mate....my gps reciever is on the dash of the car....it has a clear line of sight. i will move it to another position and see if that helps......will let you know how i get on mate
cheers

XDA - Tomtom 6 - non-bluetooth GPS error

Hi
I have read through literally hunderds of pages of GPS stuff to do with mini. I have read some things that are true and some that aren't and am now confused.
I installed Tomtom 5.0 onto my Mini S. It went on fine. Maps installed fine. I went into 'satellites - configure' part and couldn't find my GPS on any of the settings. I am almost sure my GPS receiver isn't bluetooth. I know the baud should be 4800, but otherwise I am not sure. My dad has the same recieve but uses his with an IPAQ and it worked first time. I have tried my receiver with his ipaq and the receiver works fine so that eliminates that posibility.
Here is my receiver and the blurb that comes with it.
http://www.evermoregps.ca/
GM-R700 GPS receiver
(third one down.)
The mouse-shape GPS receiver is design for PC and PDA applications. With WAAS/EGNOS channels, EverMore can give you more accurate direction and position. Compact Flash module is also available now.
I selected 'Other NMEA GPS receiver' and tried all of those. Then went through the bluetooth equivelent just in case. None of them pick my receiver up.
I then read somewhere that version 6 of Tomtom wouldn't work on my XDA mini. I downloaded 5.2 and tried it with that. I had read that this allowed 'port 7' to work. I couldn't get my map to work with 5.2 even though I spent ages on it. Eventually I tried Tomtom 6.0. As I mentioned earlier, someone had said that it wouldn't work on an XDA, but this is false as I got it working straight away. The map also installed fine and once I activated it things seemed ok. I presumed that the port 7 would now come as an option. It didn't. I am still at the same place. I believe that the port 7 thing may be a bluetooth only thing but I am not sure. I am not great at GPSbut know my way around an IPAQ pretty well. I am new to my phone so chances are there is some gateway or something that I haven't enabled etc, but I am at the end of what I know.
If anyone can help me out at all I would be eternally greatful. So far I have spent a good 20 hours getting the bloody thing working and I am about to lose the will to live.
I have used the search option on the site, but it seems everyone has BT GPS, and none of the posts seem relevant to my problem. If I have missed a post then I am sorry, but there are a fair few posts on the site now.
Thanks in advance,
Woody.

Do I have to do this even though it isn't a bluetooth device?
Even when I enabled com 7 on bluetooth settings, comm 7 didn't appear on 'Select your GPS receiver' on Tomtom.
I will try it anyway, and thanks for the speedy response.
sorry
i have give you wrong advice i thought gps recever wash bluetooth you should try going into on your phone settings, connections ,beam ,and un tick receive all in coming beams as these frees up the com port 7 on xda1.YOU WILL HAVE TO RECONFIGURE SETTINGS IN TOMTOM GPS STATUS FOR WIRED GPS RECEVER. SORRY FOR LAST POST HOPE THIS HELPS ps i got gps recever recever off ebay was meant to work on my xda1 but did not it was for ipaq the connector was the same but wiring was wrong hope this helps
Woody, first of all I couldn't understand that which GPS device have you got as you have mentioned 3rd down on that webpage, anyway I have the attached the picture of one of the device named "GM-R700", if this is the right device which you have then this is a serial cabled GPS device which connect to the device via cradle, not via Bluetooth, if I am right then bluetooth chapter is closed, we are going to talk about the cable GPS device.
If it is the right device then how are you connecting the GPS device to the XDA, does the GPS device came with the cradle and the car charger? (it must be).
Find the attached word file for a sequential instructions, I have just made it for you and others who are still stuck to make their TomTom work.
GoodLuck & let me know.
Sidd
Sidd, your attached documents refuse to open!, I am not too sure that you can connect a wired GPS to this type of phone, it simply won't work, the only option is Bluetooth for the Wizzard. In the case of the IIi and IIs phones they had a true serial port that could be used - Mike
Try these attached files as I have zipped them on a normal compression.
I think ""GuinUK (1st post)"" hasn't mention his/her device, but the GPS he/she mentioned is a serial device.
Sidd
I am pretty sure it is a Mini S he is trying to get to work with the cabled GPS receiver, it simply will not work - the device doesn't have a serial port to connect equipment like this to. The Mini S is Bluetooth only for GPS AFAIK - Mike

Thanks for your reply. This is indeed the right GPS. Sorry for any confusion there. I am about to try what you have written. I have indeed got a cradle, and a converter which makes my Ps2 GPS fit into the socket.
I will get back to you with how I got on.
Thanks again for the help, at least I know for sure it isn't BT before I start.

OK I got the download working from Sidd, thanks. I ran through all the steps you had mentioned. The problem I had is that I don't get the option of 'serial cable blah blah', mine just says 'Serial port'.
My phone is a Mini S. Perhaps this is the reason why. My friend has a bluetooth model, and I got that working fine so I guess if this last attempt doesn't work I will just buy another GPS. It isn't like they are expensive in truth.
Thanks everyone for the help, and sorry for my delay in posting but it being Xmas and all.
Cheers
Woody
If u r going for a bluetooth gps device then keep one thing in mind that u might find difficulty in searching of the proper bluetooth com port. Soltution is to download the TomTom version 5.2 prior to connect ur device.

Fantastic post
Thanks Sidd, your word doc (Serial COM Port setting to setup TomTom.doc) worked a treat, two mins and I'm up and running. I'm using spv m1500 (same as xda 2) with a cheap unbranded cabled gps unit i got from fleabay and TomTom 5.2. Thanks again.
Can I re-iterate for the benefit of others reading this post, the newer XDA device (equipped with a mini USB connection point) cannot be used with a wired GPS unit, this includes the Mini-S, Exec, Orbit etc. The older devices IIs, IIi etc all require the Receive all beams to be turned of to free up the serial port for use by the wired GPS.
If your device has a mini USB connector your only option is Bluetooth for GPS - Mike

No problem Doc114 my pleasure, any way I am also going to upload something new on the FTP (check in: ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Software/) with another brief instruction manual, enjoy the new one, you know what I mean (My name would be included in the file name, so you can recognise it easily).
I will also make one illustrated instruction for a bluetooth GPS setting whenever got a device.

How To get GPS working

can anybody tell me how & what is the step to get the GPS works ?
thanks..
Put some GPS software on your Ameo and point it to COM4.
what are some of the best gps software for ameo?
I would think google maps with the ability to real time track your location would be great. Anyone try that?
Tomtom Navigator 6.
Coz it's free.
Edit - I in no way condone the use of pirated software, and I'll no doubt burn in hell for my sins....
Dopod U1000
Hey!
I have an Dopod U1000, which is the Advantage/X7500/Athena but on the Asian market.
THe first and biggest problem I have is that the GPS is not working. I cannot get a GPS-fix, but I have contact with the actual GPS-unit.
It doesnt matter where I am or for how long I wait - I have never got a fix and once every now and then I get 1 or 2 satellites with very bad connection - but never a fix.
I talked to HTC about this and they didnt know anything about it.
I then, when I asked around, got a weird answer from a company here in Sweden. They guessed that since U1000 is for the Asian market they may somehow have "preprogrammed GPS" information, so that they use Asian satellites. Sounds very strange to me - as far as I know they are not geo-stationary so the satellites goes around and thus there are not specific Asian satellites.
Anyways, anyone know about this issue? Suggestions?
Thx!

the Global Positioning System is global, and should work anywhere on the globe !! apart from in war zones (and near US military bases) where the signal is sometimes deliberately degraded so enemies cant use satellite guided missiles.

This is also a big problem in Germany - it's not possible to get it working with Google Maps. We tried everything (also to disable the GPS-Splitter and use Com5 which helps with some programs, but not with Google Maps).
So we gave up for the moment waiting for an update (maybe Athena, maybe Google).

Got mine working in TT6 by doing:
Other NMEA GPS Receiver
GPS Baud Rate: 4800
Com4
Is this what everyone else is doing ?
is the Baud rate correct?
Its quite chuggy/slow compared to tt6 on universal. i.e. 2-3fps as opposed to almost smooth on universal
Also, is it possible to change that tomtom icon thats on the today screen ? its so ugly and blocky - really detracts from the otherwise lovely Ameo screen
Mine is working great. By the way, i'm using MapKing10. When setting the port just select auto and the software should be able to detect the port in use. My unit can lock on into the satellite signal in less then 5s, thats impressive.
Hi
Does anyone know where to get a copy of the aforementioned TT6 for free? I had just bought TT navigator 6 with GB + Western Europe for my Mio A701 about 3 months ago but was gutted to find I couldnt transfer the licence to my new Ameo so i sold the boxed product with the Mio.
Anyone know where I can get one (strictly for "backup" purposes of course).
Cheers
Very easily found on torrent sites.
I won't give a link here as I assume that would be frowned on by the management....
ok, will have a look. not that familiar with all this torrent stuff!
ta
GPS Port
I looked in the registry and I found that com 5 is the official port. Strange enough com 4 and 5 work.
Getting GPS working
I purchased an A701 last week and had one hell of a time tring to get TT6 to work, even though MM worked fine. It appears that some software originally designed for ealier MS does not like Com4. I loaded a program called VisualGPSse, a freedownload, and set that to com 4 and bingo TT6 spang into life. Before using TT now I lauch that small app and it works fine. I,ll try and find the link if Google doen't find it for you.
ps. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to use hands free, my Mio Rom R65 seems duff in this area.
getting GPS to work
I've installed my vehicle navigation software (copilot live v5) without any problem twice.
But when I tried to instal another GPS-based application called MobileGolfScorer, the system was simply unable to sense any satellite signal. Not only that, the system became extremely slow to the point of freezing up and not responding.
Then, I read about the post that says com5 is the default, so I said to myself may be I should use com5 instead of 4 in my start>setting>GPS.
After changing to com5, my MobileGolfScorer was able to recognise signal although the signal was extremely weak. Also, it was no longer freezing up. I thought that may be I've at least solved the problem and the weak signal may be due to the fact that I was not directly under the open sky.
The new problem is that after changing to com5, my copilot stopped working! When trying to reset GPS within copilot, it just said that I either did not have the GPS connected, or I was having the wrong com selection and/or baud rate. I tried all possible combinations of com and baud rate (including letting it find automatically) but unfortunately the results were the same.
Then I thought to myself may be copilot can only use com4. Since vehicle navigation is a more important application to me, I may have to sacrifice MobileGolfScorer until the problem is resolved. So I went to start>setting>GPS and reverted to com 4.
I then tried to get copilot to work but now it would not. MGS also would not work. So now I have two GPS applications that are not able to sense any signal. I can see the gsm led orange light(GPS) and green light(phone) alternating, which means that the GPS is supposed to be working, althoug the orange light disappears by itself after a while. The thing is, with or without the orange light, the software were not able to sense any GPS signal.
What do all these suggest? Any idea???
Chapter 2 to my story:
Since I'm also experiencing MD lost cluster problems, I had wonder if it could be that some system files used by the copilot program is corruptted. So I decided to hard-reset the unit and reinstall everything from scratch again. The first thing that I did after hard resett was to instal MobileGolfScorer. It did not work when I used com4 and baud rate 4800. Could not detect any GPS signal although the orange light was blinking. Then I installed Copilot live Pocket PC v5. This software has no problem detecting the signal right away. In my mind, it seems to suggest that the reason for copilot to have stopped working could be due to file corruption, while MobileGolfScorer still for some reason could not detect it. What I also failed to understnad is why for a very brief period it did detect very week signal (see chapter 1 above).
My fear: Once I was so confident that com4 and baud rate 4800 solves all problems. Now I'm less sure what is going on. If you're lucky, it works; if you not lucky it does'nt seems to work. You could be doing exactly the same thing entering the same setting but you could get different results. Is it due to file corruption? Why does it get corrupted so easily?
Let's hope some smarter mind could figure this out for us.
Its all about the sucky comport management in windows.
If one app is accessing a com port, no others can.
If windows GPS management is accessing the GPS on com5, then you shouldnt connect to com5 yourself. The whole point of the windows management is that the software port (often port4) it creates is meant to be able to be read by multiple programs.
However, most programs dont seem to like the software port. Eg, googlemaps.
I just turned off the MS GPS management and only use apps that directly attatch to com5, and only one app at a time.

Yup same here, Holux M-1200 with iGo MyWay software. But are you sure you set up a secure connection with the bluetooth and set it as a com port 6 or 7 with the correct baud rate? Did you follow everything step by step in your manual for the tomtom?
Well, I tried to follow the manual, but it didn't really help me. There was very little information in the manual, and the information in it was not very clear. The fact is, that it worked a couple of days ago, and now I cannot connect anymore...
I have a motorola BT GPS, supposedly motorola is rock-solid, but I've had troubles with it at times. Rebooting the phone would work occasionally, turning off the GPS would work occasionally, turning off both would work occasionally, if you get the picture, no ONE thing did it each time.
Recently, I found Franson GPSGate (the full version) This keeps a good connection with the bluetooth GPS better than it ever has been before, even when walking away from and then back to the gps device. It also generates a comport that multiple GPS programs can use at once. Very handy little program.
Hope it helps someone.
itrek bluetooth for me....
Do you know about the settings, External GPS icon on the Wing? Go in there and make sure you've got com port set i have mine at program port 6 which is where most gps like to sit for some reason but if it's not working for you play with that setting unfortunately it's trial and error but play with it. I don't know what you'd need "hardware port" for but since you're using a mouse and not a bluetooth unit can't hurt to play with that too, and in the last screen be sure you've got "manage automatically" checked, or maybe you need to uncheck it. All stuff to play with. Did you put any software on lately that could have hosed something? Did you try reloading tom tom? See if you can find one of those freeware utilities that talk to the gps unit and see if it can find it.
This device doesnt have a internal gps correct ? I always thought it didnt but I see some people talking as if it does. Then again, you all wouldnt be buying externals if that was the case.

Try searching on here for GPS Test, it will scan all available ports and report back exactly what settings your GPS is using. Plug these into TomTom and all should be good to go.

WM6.5 Bluetooth problem thread

I opened this thread to sign here all the BT problems found on our BA using WM6.5
I'm using Radio 1.13 on WM6.5 21198. I can pair a Qstarz 51channel GPS antenna correctly, but after the pairing the device remains disconnected. After checking the Serial Port box in the device settings i'm able to tap on 'Connect', but then the BA always report 'Unable to connect, connection failed or password wrong'.
I tried with Broadcomm stack b3900 but i get an error on startup about 'Storage' file being deleted or something else.
I tried with Helmi BT stack b3400 and it works: i can pair and connect. However connection seems to be unstable and after a few i get the device disconnected automatically, i don't have even the time to set up correctly Navigon Navigator. After a SR sometimes i get 'Unable to turn on bt cous of lack of memory, try to sr... blablabla'. Sometimes i have to HR to leave this error message.
better experiences?
I never use the CONNECT in the BT Settings to connect to my Holux GPSlim236. I just Add New Device... then set the COM Port to port #6, then go to Start/Settings/Connections/External GPS ... Under the Programs tab (Select NONE), under Hardware tab (Select the COM Port you set on BT, in my case COM Port 6), on the Access tab (Mark Manage GPS Automaticaly. Then I go open whatever GPS Software I'm going to use, and it usually connects to the GPS Reciever automatically. [edit] If it doesn't connect, then I go to the settings of the GPS Software and I tell it what my GPS Reciever COM Port is. I usually have to do that with Live Search and iGO8(all though iGO8 has a search for GPS that always finds it too)[end edit] However, from the best of my memory, I have never seen my GPS listed as CONNECTED. So again, I don't think you need to try to Connect on the BT Settings page. Give it a try, hope this helps.
Another option is to contact Qstarz support and ask them how to properly set up your GPS on WM6+. They should be able to walk you through.
[Edit:] I will test tonight if I get that error message by trying to use the CONNECT funtion on BT Settings. Also, I'll see if when the BT GPS Receiver is connected, if it shows on BT Settings as CONNECTED. I'll post back my findings as an EDIT to this post.[End Edit]
<Edit> I've done some further testing as promised. Here is my finding:
*When the BTGPS Reveiver is connected to the phone, there is no indication on the BT Settings as that it is "Connected", however it is, as Live Search, Pharos, iGO8 and Google find it without any troubles.
*I tried to highlight the GPS Receiver and tap on CONNECT, but the softkey is greyed out(not available).
*I tried tap n hold over the Receiver with the same results, connect is not available.
I have not noticed any problems with Blue tooth on build 21198.
Same problem to me with Jentro BT8.
Now trying HELMI_BA_BTstack_Build 3400.CAB.
Hope this one works.

Read markanthonypr's and frafor's posts above. Those are the only two solutions found so far. I am currently trying out markanthony's solution and so far it seems to work. I'll have to do some further testing.
I've been able to connect my GPS using helmi's b3400 stack, the connection is far stable but i have to set up the GPS ports fast, then open Navigon Navigator because otherwise the GPS enters standby mode and it looses the connection. However in these days i'll try the new build
markanthonypr: i too use 'add new device', but after the wizard procedure the GPS is listed under 'Disconnected devices' so then i have to check 'Serial port' service and tap 'connect'. Here i get the error message.

LOL well I'm glad yours is working. I tried using Frafor's method, got his same error, went back to the method I always use, and now it won't connect LOL blah... I'm sure it will after a soft reset.
Speaking of soft reset. I've been searching all over for the darn XP ShutDown and can't find it. I know its here, but, why can't search find it? I wouldn't dare to ask you to point me in the right route, would you think I had the guts to as that? "Giggling"
Edit: Oh and I did use the Search !
i attached it for you, but be aware of the fact, that this is the basic version with a very xp like look for themes and how to install them go to: http://ppcsoft.narod.ru/english/

I wouldn't dare to tell you to search... you know better than that
As far as the BT, it seems that it isn't a matter of drivers after all, but rather how 6.5 is handling them. Stick with the original drivers, I think that there are a few surprises in stock with the other BT stacks (Helmi's and broadcomm's)
Also, if I could recommend you Destinator 7, it seems to do just fine. I haven't tried Tomtom 6 or iGo 6 (all of which I used to use), but this one is very lightweight and the maps are not ridiculously big either.
Good to see you around buddy!!

Oh, I'm happy with iGO8 and the sexy female voice I have LOL and LiveSearch works awesome as well. They just updated again few weeks ago. Only thing I don't like about LiveSearch is it only saves 128MB on Storage Card. Everything over that gets downloaded on the spot and with the slow G connection of BA's, it can become a pain at times. But iGO8 Maps cover PR very well However, just to be nice, I'll try destinator. If you recomend it and Tony Cooks it, I'll eat it LOL
Umm btw, let me scoot to work... Later aligators
EDIT: Geez, I always have a second thought after pressing that darn Post Reply. I installed NF, its the same I had. Haven't seen any noticeable difference. A little higher build... Poofff Gone!

*I tried tap n hold over the Receiver with the same results, connect is not available.

nothing to do, the GPS connects (1second flashing blu light), then the BA stucks on the passphrase window with the wait cursor, the GPS disconnects (fixed blue light) and then it enables standby mode...

psShutXP is a bit annoying. I use this cab to soft reset & power off which is quite ideal for WM6.5 start menu I have repacked the cab files.
I've got the same problem and I think this is a problem GPS with MTK chipset. I've try 2 diferent GPS (qstarz and pentagram ) with MTK chipset and bouth work correctly only with WM2003 or on WM 5/6 from helmi with Helmi BT Stack 1,7.
With many ROMs GPS connect corectly and work to soft reset. After reset GPS connect for 1-2 sek and disconnect. It doesnt mater setting in GPS devices so i thing this is problem with receving BT data in our devices.
Also I try GPS from nokia LW-3 (or something like this) with sirfstar III and it connect without problem with diferent ROMS
I have a different problem since upgrading to Xplode's WM6.5 v21202...
I have working connections (not all at the same time) to three BT devices; Qstarz 51 ch gps, my old Tomtom BT gps, and the Stowaway (Think Outside) BT keyboard. All exhibit the same problem:
After a few minutes the connection seems to go and the device loses communication. It will then reconnect and continue fine for a while then same loss as before. This is particularly annoying when I'm using Tomtom to navigate!
I have not set up a serial connection for the Tomtom gps but did so for the Qstarz and keyboard. they all have the same comms loss.
I also have another BA running WM6.1 and this is fine with the devices...
Any suggestions please?
Thanks

Try a different BT stack. Some people have reported improvement in certain areas of functionality. However, everything comes at a price... the same people have reported that the range stinks. You will not be able to get much further than a couple of feet from your BA. Hope this helps...
