I have always used wap.cingular and have seen references to isp.cingular. After searching, I cannot seem to find why I would use isp.cingular. Does anyone know the difference?
While I am at it, anyone know what that disable and restore proxy settings are for as well? I don't have them on my CUSTEL 2.5 ROM and I know they came out on the last Cingular ROM (or if I added the CUSTEL Cing Apps pack) but I haven't seen a need for them.
Maybe...maybe not
Well, here's my 2 cents, cause I wish I could get isp.cingular to work. Since I upgraded to the latest ROM I've been unable to make isp.cingular work. Before, when I went to a page, such as Google, I'd get the normal Google page. Now that I seem to be stuck with wap.cingular, I'm automatically redirected to the WAP page (www.google.com/m). I've found no way around it. Everything is fine when there's no WAP page. But I'd rather have a little more control on some web pages...Google is a good example, cause I hate their WAP page.
Oh, I love Cingular questions.
I suspect there may be a move afoot to eventually phase out isp.cingular. If you have a MEdiaNet plan, you must to use wap.cingular, isp won't work. Heretofore either access point has worked for PDAConnect plans, although it's interesting that kpk703 appears to have lost the ability with a ROM update.
Only practical use I've found for the proxy is the ability to access MEdiaNet services such as http://home and Cellular (formerly Cingular) Video (available to any plan, I'm reasonably certain).
With the PDA connect plan (and you have to specifically ask for the PDA connect plan, you can use either). NOTE: with the ROM update, and possible the one before, IE is hard coded to use the wap.cingular proxy. You need to disable that. (do a search).

$20 MEdia Net for the win?
sim card question
Does it matter what sim card you use. I'm using my old orange cingular sim card from 2 plus years ago, it's the 64K smart chip sim card. Ii have received new sim cards with my wizard and with the 8525 but just kept using the old card. My connections work fine and speed doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm thinkin if it ain't broken don't fix it....am i right on this one?
Yeah I do have a media net plan, so I guess I have to use wap.cing... Might not matter. I will play around with the proxy settings when I get a ROM that has them. I have never seen the http://home, but then again its probably just another cingular splash page.
Not a proxy issue
I have the PDA Personal Max...and I don't subscribe to Medianet. Not a proxy issue on this side. My problem isn't with Internet Explorer...I can't even connect to isp.cingular anymore. When it attempts to connect it gives me an error. Again, fine until ROM upgrade.

Yes, I've got the same SIM card and it works fine for me.

Nah, it's actually a bit more than that. Local weather, news, sports & entertainment links. Access to your account. Customizable. Pretty cool, IMO.

I don't believe the PDA Personal Max works with the isp.cingular. I had that plan too, and could not get it too work. I then called and switched to the PDA connect, and it started to work. They are the same price, but you don't get any SMS/IM messages with the PDA connect.

For what it's worth
Cingular/ATT customer service seems to know less and less about the situation the more often I call. It only appears to be a provisioning matter if you've subscribed to one of the MediaNet packages, where you're basically SOL. If you have PDA Connect, PDA Max or PDA Personal Max, without a MediaNet add-on, isp.cingular should work. I tried an experiment and have had limited, yet some, success. Using ProxyManager I ran the EnableProxy cab, tried to connect to isp.cingular, no go. Back in ProxyManager I ran DisableProxy. Was able to connect and bring up a page in IE. Now, new problem. I can't get into all web sites. From just a couple tests it appears web sites with WAP detection turned on won't come up, Google, Yahoo for example. Other sites, that I know do not have WAP pages, seem to come up fine. The good news (if you can call it that) is that the automatic redirection to WAP sites, like www.google.com/m, isn't happening. Of course, www.google.com is coming up either. Ready for a couple more suggestions. At least I think I'm headed in the right direction.
I too have experinced the inability to connect to isp.cingular. I have upgraded to a WM6 ROM, also changed my plan to a PDA unlimited plan that has the 1500 included SMS/MMS. So I can't really say if either one is the culprit here. When I called tech support, I was told that isp.cingular and wap.cingular are basicly the same pipe, that isp is mostly used for the cards, and wap for the PDAs. Now the girl seemed to be technical, and I'm not an expert on Cingular/AT&T (yet), so I'll give her he benefit of the doubt. Assuming this to be the case and they are/share the same pipe, then it's just QOL/routing that is the primary difference, not speed. Of course I don't friggin have 3g in my area yet, so I can't comment on that aspect.
This sound right?
ISP is for PDAs, Connect Cards and Computers. ISP has the option of using a cingular proxy server to compress data as it is sent. it also has higher speed caps and lower latency. u will not usually be able to access isp with the medianet plans unless a mistake(serious) has been made in your provisioning. my COU line used to allow it but alas I have 3g no longer .
if you can, use ISP if not , dont sweat it.
I have the "PDA Personal Unlimited" plan, and not the MEdia connect plan, but I still can only connect to wap. and not isp.cingular.com.
The connection gets dropped immediately.
I have a At&t Tilt W/Duttys dualtouch final rom radio version 1.27.11.31 running opera mini 4 On TMOBILE network tried eveything in the book and searched evey forum trying to figure out why my tmobile edge connection says connected and not be. PIE will start by locating, connecting, opening, and finally freezing. Opera mini will start progress and stop half way and freeze. My SMS works fine but my MMS also has a problem it will send a percentage of the file and freeze. After configuring everything manually still nothing I have called tmobile and still no hope all my settings are correct according to forums and tmobile customer support I even tried the lurch2 TmobileUS cab and the MMS Tmobile settings cab. I've also read on the fact the phone is 3g it will not work on tmobile until their release of 3g having to due with a test on their network. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it .

You've probably got your answer, but I use a tilt with Edge just fine. Sounds like a phone issue. I have used Duttys Roms and they all worked fine.
Did you try?
Start/Settings/Connections/Connections/Manage existing connections/Proxy Setting/ and uncheck the box next to (the network uses a proxy server to coonect to the Internet
I hope this works for you.
What i do for my sister's tilt on tmo is use Network Wizard (google it) and install that, then tell it USA then TMO and let it do its thing. afterwards you can uninstall it if you care. i would reccomend changing the MMS settings to 5 attempts and to use T-Mobile Data rather than T-Mobile MMS to connect, that way it doesn't have to establish a new connection, it just downloads.
No Problems Here!
I have been using t-mobile on my tilt 8925 wm6.0 stock rom been through many planning on many more trying to find out how to put tmobile progs and apps on and remove att B.s. im am a n00b as i would be refered to but seeing as i have only owned a htc for as long as i have had a account here i think im moving right up the ranks and would really like to learn more and start writing my own roms looking for a push in the right direction Thanks in adavnce
Hey everyone,
I last hard reset my phone a few months ago. For some reason, maybe 1 month ago or a little longer ago, my GPS function stopped working. I use Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search. Both of them have the same problem, they attempt to connect to satellites and then say GPS communication error (or something similar). When I use manual mode, it's 57,600bps and Com 7, same problem.
The GPS quick connection update thing will no longer update. I tried the Q-GPS thing yesterday and that updates just fine. When I check the system info, it shows the GPS and 2 dll files. But I can't activate the GPS.
I don't imagine this is related to installing an SD driver? I wasn't able to read my 2 gig micro-SD card (in a micro to mini adapter), after a while, so I searched for drivers, found one that worked, and then at some point when I tried the GPS, the GPS didn't work.
Any ideas? I could do a hard reset, but that's annoying as we all know, to reinstall everything, reconfigure the settings, etc.
Also, we just switched from T-Mobile to AT&T. I currently have the $10/mth plan, but it doesn't let me access my IMAP accounts. I imagine IM+ won't work either (I assume it only allows http connections?) . Is there another plan I could use or some hack, so I don't have to pay $30(!?)/month for unlimited data? I was paying $20 with T-Mobile for the Blackberry plan and that worked just fine with everything, even though T-Mobile themselves said it wouldn't work. Anything similar with AT&T?
Thanks in advance
Eric

Just to update anyone interested. I found that when my phone reboots, for a seconds it was showing About and Menu (or something like that) for the softkeys before it was fully booted. Anyway, it turned out it was for the VPN settings. Apparently AT&T had set that up by default when I installed the AT&T SIM card. Anyway, it listed a proxy server, and for the heck of it, I unchecked the proxy server. Then I ran FlexMail and guess what? It worked! For $10/month, I have full data access, I just had to turn off the proxy server.
Hopefully this helps someone..

Hello
Just switched from symbian to android and now I really want to get some apps installed to my phone.
When I click the market app, I need to sign in with my gmail account.
But when I try this it gives me the message.
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned for data services"
The part with temporary I don't believe and the SIM card part I know is wrong as I can surf the net, sync my exchange company mail etc.
I have tried with WIFI also, but same message coming.
Living in Norway, using Netcom as carrier.
Does anybody have any clue on how I can get past this and log into market?
Best regards
TommyE
Remove the sim. Wifi should still work. Tested here fine, when I had a Hero. This will not be a data provisioning issue.
I can also confirm this. I didn't initially have a Google account, and when I tried to create one via the handset I got the data provisioning error. I master reset the phone, created a Google account online with my PC, and set the Google login details in the initial setup of the phone. After this I had no problems.
Good luck.
ditto, I didn't set up android account when I went through initial setup, and it wouldn't work later. Had to factory reset and do it during initial setup (it was happy enough using my wifi for this)
same problem on HTC Magic =(
I have HTC Magic, i purchased it several days ago and it was working just fine. Then i found out that i can't replace the google account from previous owner and decided to hard-reset.
After that I'm getting this (I'm on T-mobile USA and I have just internet for 5.99):
"This could be a temporary problem or your sim card may not be provisioned for data services, if it continues, call customer care"
Called customer care, they said it won't work without 24.99 data plan, but it WAS working before! I tried changing APN from epc.tmobile.com to wap.voicestream.com but it didn't help =(
Phone is unlocked. Without signin in to google I can't even use phone features.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
I am having this issue now. I bought my Hero last week and set it up with my China Mobile SIM card. Then I decided to switch to China Unicom because they offer WCDMA 3G service. I am able to connect to CU data just fine but none of my Google apps will function. I can check gmail through the browser but not the internal application. This happens on Wifi as well.
I have done several factory resets with no luck. Any ideas?
after more than 12 hours my problem just went away. i don't know why. my guess is google has a mechanism in place to lock out accounts from more than one source or something. it's strange that i never had the problem with my G1 as often as i changed ROMs and when I changed SIM cards with it.

I've been having issues with getting signed into Google here in China as well. I had also just come back from vacation where I was using a different carrier.
I had been unsuccessful in getting a connection to the Google servers for the last 12+ hours. I have reflashed my ROM (actually three different ones) and reformated my SD card, all with no luck.
Just got to the office and connected successfully right away over our VPN wireless router, however I'm still having trouble getting Gmail to load all of my conevrsations.
So, my guess is the usual iffy Chinese connection.

it's very strange. I never had an issue with my G1 but hero has all kinds of connection issues whether on WiFi or 3G. I rarely get email notifications, this issue, and now I can't download ANYTHING from the market.

someone please help i just bought a sony ericsson x10 mini pro yesterday and im not able to browse the net, use the market or anything without it saying

what does this mean?, do i need a new sim card in order to use the functions on the x10 mini pro? if so what sim card and where do i buy it ?
I'm now on my 2nd Focus because of this problem. 1st off, I do have an SD card in there but have not had any restart or any problems which seem to be due to the card.
I had the first Focus for about 3 weeks when all of a sudden it wouldn't connect to any cellular data. No EDGE or 3G. It would connect to WiFi and I could still make/receive calls and texts. But no internet or MMS. So I chatted with AT&T. End result: restore phone. I restored the phone WITH the same SD card in it and it worked fine...until the next day. Same problem, lost all cellular data connections. So then I chatted with Samsung. They suggested it was due to some 3rd party apps I installed (which I though was BS). So I ended up going into the AT&T store and they gave me a new one.
So I've had the 2nd Focus for about a week now and everything was working perfectly fine (with the same SD card in it). But about an hour ago, I lost all cellular data AGAIN! Restarted, toggled data connection off then on again, but still won't connect.
Could this problem really be caused by the SD card (as AT&T said?) I just don't see how an SD card can mess up cellular data. I know it does cause performance problems for some people, but cutting off data?
I guess nobody else is having this problem?
I went ahead and restored my phone again since I couldn't live without 3G connection. Still don't understand what's causing the problem though.

Obviously, you've tried removing the SD card? AT&T and M$ have yet to announce any compatible cards, officially. People have reported issues with the cards up to several days after installing them.

When I remove the SD card without restoring it just reverts back to a new install (since it can't see some of the data on the card I'm guessing) and the 3G works. I put the SD card back in and all my data is back but the 3G or any cellular data connection is gone again.
After restoring it this last time, I get 3G back (as usual) with the SD card still installed and have had 3G since I restored it.
It just seems like I'm the only person having problems with my cellular connection and the SD card, and I don't understand how the SD card can affect that. I understand loss of data or performance issues but not loss of 3G...
And as far as when I usually lose 3G, I have had info saved on the SD card for days before. Each time I've restored with the SD card in I sync all my music back to it and it definitely rolls over to the SD card. I haven't put anything on it this time to see if it will lose connection within a week like it's done before.

Yeah, it's tough to imagine a link between the SD card and the data connection, but, clearly there is. It may be in the manner that WP7 addresses the memory. It treats it as one large drive and, perhaps, after the hard reset some of the system data that deals with the data connection gets written onto the card?
Who knows? Pretty strange. It'll be interesting to see what happens now.
Thought it was time for an update on the situation...
It happened again and I had to restore the phone 1 more time a week or less after my last post. I did leave the SD card in as I normally do. The only difference was I didn't put ALL my music when I synced it (all my music adds up to well over 8GB). Instead I only put a little to where the total space taken was far less than 8GB. As I kept installing apps, taking pics/vids, blah blah blah it is now at the 8GB mark. There is a little noticeable lag now, but nothing unbearable at all. What hasn't happened (yet) is the loss of cellular data.
I'm hoping it doesn't do it again, or the upcoming update will address some SD card issues as well as copy paste. *crosses fingers*
considering it keeps happening and the 1 mainstay is the sd card....id try it without the card.... if it runs smooth...its the card.... if it screws up its something else... just too simple not to try... from what ive read, sd cards have caused a wide variety of problems, from just reboots to the extreme of bricking phones....
you havent even mentioned what brand and class card it is... it could be one of the unstable ones... if so theres your answer...

It's a Kingston 16GB Class 4, so it's confirmed working. It does seem the SD card is the problem, but (1) I don't get how the SD card can cause cellular data failure and (2) why am I the only one that is having the problem? (at least it seems like I'm the only one having a problem with losing cellular data)

well just might be a bad card... not everything that makes the shelf is perfect...
as for the why.. like i said before , there are a variety of problems... just not restarts and losing data... ive seen locking in airplane mode...ive seen bricking...etc
like i said take it out and try it.. its the only way to be sure... if it is.. try another card format the phone... put the new card in and format it 2 times and go from there....

I'm having the same problem, the data connection works fine but there're times when it says it's connected but it can't download or upload anything, the only way to fix this is by turning off and on the phone and then the data connection works again. Not even the ON/OFF switch for data in settings fix the problem.
I also have problems with the signal in general, sometimes it loses connection to my service provider and after some seconds it finds the service again, maybe a problem with the radio?
Samsung Focus: No memory card installed, using it in Venezuela (Movistar), 3G/E data service.
I already reported this issue to the WP Support Forums, I think they're investigating the problem because I haven't had any feedback since the last time more than a week ago, here it is:

If somebody has this problem feel free to vote for my post to let them notice that it's not an one-person problem
Same issue
I am on Fido/Rogers in Canada and get the same problem from time to time, no SD card installed.
In my case, it happens after I lose signal for a while, like garage or no signal area...When I get a signal back, the data portion just won't connect, even though I can make and receive calls and my phone displays 3G.
Reboot takes care of it.
Just found this thread. I've been having this issue for the past two days. Have never installed an SD card in my Focus. I tried the HSUPA hack a few days ago. I thought that was the cause. So I asked for help to undo the hack.
I've only had my Focus for a couple of days.
I was experiencing a lost of data connection eariler today. I think it's to do with your location/network provider.
On my X1, I use to turn flight mode on and off to fix the problem - forcing the phone to reconnect.
Sometimes the signal is GPRS and other times 3G.
How many of you experiencing this are using the Facebook app? I was having the problem today (it started this morning) and after uninstalling the FB app (where i was noticing the problem most) and a soft reset, I'm not seeming to have the problem.

So now that I think about it, when i wasn't receiving data, the phone showed full signal, even though in my office i usually get 2 bars. After the uninstall and soft reset, im now showing the 2 bars. No idea if it was causing this, but seems a strange thing to have happen.
i do have the same problem. deactvating data connection and activating again doesnt work. You dont need to restore phone to make it work again, just go to settings -> cellular -> network selection ... remove automatic and wait till it finishes searching..select you operator or automatic again it should reset your connection settings and 3g/edge should work again.
mine is an unlocked AT&T might be a problem with the unlocking mecanism if you guys also using unlocked phones.
not sure how to solve it yet.

Never used Facebook App. Did notice when it happened today, that after I close IE I had 7 yahoo emails. I'm wondering if the limited multi-tasking carries over to data. When the phone is syncing, maybe it shuts other connections down.
