On the Wizard when you install an app by putting .cab file on the storage card or wherever it asks you where to put it. For instance before I sold my Wizard I put a .cab on the storage card and ran it from the phone and installed it on the storage card.
Just gone back to a Magician temporarily and forgot that if you put a .cab on the mem card and want to install it to the storage card, you can't and it installs it on the phone memory, which is small compared to a Wizard.
The only way I can see to be able to install files to storage card is if they are .exe and you either install them from PC and chose location or suchlike. No choice for .Cab files or is there ?
WinCE cab manager anyone ??
there's a little software called cabinstl_en.exe that allows you to select where to install the cab file.

Doesn't seem like I can install a *.cab file to storage card, when I open it, it will install automatically into main memory\program files
Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks
Use Cabinst to manage your CAB installations.

regestry change
whit a simple regestry change , it will ask you where to install it: folder,drive....
even if you do an istallation from active sync
And what is this simple registry change ?
Do tell .... don't keep it a secret
what is this change?
ok here it is:
Edit the regestry on the PPC:
\HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Microsoft Aplication Installer\
set fAskDest to "1"
if you like
Create the "Pogram Files" folder on the SD card on the root folder,
make sure that you have the ignore_my_docs file in the root driveof the SD card.
I install most of my program on the SD card.
hi alexk,
i m using mini O2. how do go to the registry by the way?
and all the programs can run from the SD card?
Pls advise..
thanks..
Cheers
 Chivas
I use Resco Explorer to edit my registry,
it includes the Resco Registry Editor ^^
alexk > Thanks for this tweak
chivas > If you want a freeware use this one PHM Registry Editor
Most programs can be run from SD card except Today Plugins
What is the benefit of running CAB's from our SD card? In otherwords, I don't have the foggiest clue what happens to a CAB once you run it apart from it installing the program etc.
A cab file is a way to install a progam.
So you can install this program wherever you want.
The benefit to install it on a SD Card is to liberate some RAM
Thanks for that
Why is this forum sooooooo sloooooow

Hi Alex, thanks for the tweak. But what do you mean by those meantioned above ? Are you saying that we can create a "Program Files" folder in SD card and install our program into it? What do you mean by root folder? Do I need to create a note pad file named as ignore_my_docs?

Calvin,
Root folder refers to the highest folder of the drive, the one where all the sub-folders reside... ie on your PC C:\
Be very carefull editing the registry, not recomended for a novice as one wrong move can leave you with a lot of trouble
Thanks for the info. I think there's nothing to do with registry in these tweak rite? For what I know from others forumer, the Ignore_my_documents file is inside the main memory. It serves the purpose whereby the ppc will ignore the "My Documents" inside the Sd card (if you created one) and only use the "My Documents" inside the main memory.
Same said they have deleted the Ignore_my_documents file in the main memory and therefore they can saved their files (themes and etc) into "My Documents" inside the Sd card in order to save some RAM.
My question is, do we need to create Ignore_my_documents file into Sd card if we are going to do so?
Does anyone know a way to install tomtom 5.21 straight from sd card on wm5, without having to install via my PC/activeysnc?
I can do it on my xda2i by just extracting the cab from the 5.21 exe file and putting that in the 2577 folder on the sd card. Works great, so if I get a device lockup and have to hard reset, I'm not going to get caught out and have to trek home for my PC just to reinstall tomtom. I just insert the SD card and everything installs itself. Sweeeeet.
But try the same on the wizard (and I guess any other wm5 device) and the install fails. I'm guessing its just a tomtom thing as their site does say you can only install using activesync. But thats so lame. It would be great if someone has found a workaround?
Install 5.1 first onto the SD card using the howto (and test). Then install 5.2. Move the new files that 5.2 CABs insist on putting in main memory (in /Program Files/Navigator, /Contacts Navigation, /TomTom) to the corresponding directories on the SD card (Note that the directory names are slightly different - keep the 5.1 names).
I've not had to test 5.2 yet, but 5.1 seems to work OK running purely from SD after a hard reset (i.e. with nothing installed to the PPC). The only thing I had to do was recreate the shortcut in the Start Menu. You might not be so lucky with the Contacts integration, but I don't use any of that.
Thanks for the suggestion, but it hasn't fixed the problem.
I've got around it by just copying across the ttn.cab file from the 5.21 exe onto the main memory of wizard and running it from there. This 1 cab file seems to install everything that the 4 cab files installed in 5.0 and 5.1.
It would still be nice if it would install straight from sd card, but at least now I don't have to install from my PC anymore - which was the main problem.
ei guys how can i install apps in my sd card coz xda mini has small built in memory...
my phone went hang freezes when loaded of installed apps..
specially the .exe installer the phone doesnt ask if i install it to sd memory or phone memory its direct installed in my system memory
pls...help
thanks
when you install via activesync, it will ask you if you want to install to default directory.. click NO and it will let you choose "Storage Card"
wow! thanks for the help i found it so easy....
thanks
ei i install flashdash onto my sd card but the system memory decrease...why?
Sometimes the app allocates some files to the main memory so that it can be standby even when the PPC is turned off. Some time just a lot of log or temp files.
BTW:If you install CAB files, use CabInstaller to specify the location to Card.
Cheers,
Tian
Just got my new white Trinity w/ GPS & Tom Tom. When I try to install it, I get a low memory error and install aborts. I have 41Mb storage and 21Mb program mem free.
Anyone else have trouble? Can it be installed to card?
It can be installed to the card, yes, but I never had that problem, altough I have installed TomTom many times.
I got a lot of problems but not this one !
Is this the HTC version that is downloaded on their web site ?
CD that was in the box. They have a cab file to dnload?
Tomtom refused to install on SD
I had the same problem - and the option "install into default installation folder" was checked and grayed out, so I could not tell Tomtom to install onto SD.
I backuped my Trinity, cleared the internal storage, connected to Activesync as "Guest", installed Tomtom to the internal storage, then moved the folder \Program Files\Navigator to a folder \Program Files\Navigator I created on my SD card.
After that, I restored my device. All I had to do after that was to manually add a shortcut to the Tomtom application in my Start Menu folder.
This worked for me.
Cheers Stefan
(I installed Tomtom from CAB available on the European HTC web site: http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/htcp3600.html)
No cab file there. It is a exe that loads via Activesync. I get the same low mem error as with the CD. I have 62 Mb free. This is rediculous.
Gave up. The installer creates a temp cab in
program files/activesync/HTC apps
If you can't find it, search the C drive for *.cab and sort by date.
Copy that file while the installer is still open. Run it from the storage card. Worked fine.
I've been working with "WinCE CAB Manager"
http://www.ocpsoftware.com/products.php?nm=cecabmgr
but Ive got a problem with getting the installation DIR right.
I.'m doing a repack like a games collection so I can install all my games at once after a hard-reset.
Here's what Ive been doing so far:
I use the existing CABs and collected them in my Games Pack. The problem is when try to install the CAB on my MDA IV it always installs the files om my main memory even when I chose my Internal Memory as installation DIR. What am I doing wrong?
As you can see Ive tried in the [CAB information] different "Default Install DIR" but still it keep installing everything on my main memory.

Double click on Default Install Dir. Write in Storage Card/Program Files
I suppose in this way you can't choose anymore whether you want to install in main memory or internal storage? It just installs in internal storage right?
