too many soft resets with phone not working - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

If I go to settings and stop all programs running(except task manager) The phone will not start. I have tried starting it from programs and using the phone button on the keypad and the little silver button at the back of the machine.
The only way to restart it is by soft resetting, when I do this there is only task manager running, the phone buttons work then so it aint a case of 'it has to be kept running' all the time.
any ideas?

From my limited experience.
goto "Task Manager" in Programs to close down your running Programs but never close Phone.
I think everyone has this problem on the EXEC, if you close Phone in Task Manager you have to soft reset to get it back.
Or the best option would be to get Spb Pocket Plus and you will never need to use Task Manager as this software automatically closes applications, so you will never need to go to Task Manager and accidently close the Phone.
Hope this helps.

how to completely close applications?

I find that when I visit SETTINGS --> SYSTEM tab --> MEMORY --> RUNNING PROGRAMS tab, there are always several applications running. It seems to be ones I have used and I pressed the cross or OK on the top right cornerto close it, but hey don't actually completely close. Is there a way to make sure they are closed and not running in the background?
You can install a task manager.
I recommend:
Wisbad Advance 2 (free as it is beta right now)
Good luck
how to realy close programs
im using the best software i think the "battery pack 2.1.1". this software will give u some other great stuff.

Magic Button from http://www.trancreative.com
Freeware as well, and will enable you to toggle the top bar between the standard window title and a neat windows-like task bar.
the one and only CloseAll does the work.
wow guys, thanks a lot for your speedy suggestions. I will check them out, thanks again.
My VJOkButt is a very low profile task killer and can also be used with AE button plus to replace the red key, since it will also simulate hanging up phone calls. So you don't lose a button, but merely double it's existing functionality.

Another vote for MagicButton. Very small memory footprint, shows you which tasks are running on the status bar, can choose which apps it leaves alone, and gives a battery meter too. I found that WA/PocketPlus/BatteryPack etc were all too much of a resource hog on the Wizard.

Be VERY careful with Battery Pack Pro.
Totally banjaxed my K-JAM, I had to do a hard reset to recover.
I am currently trialing Spb Pocket Plus.
Does what you want plus a whole load more and has NOT caused any problems on my PDA.
Except it would not work when installed on my MiniSD card only installed internally.

I am using DinarSoft's HandySwitcher it is also very small and unobtrusive

I have loaded MagicButton on my Qtek 9100 and it works realy nice. But when I check AutoStart option in Settings, and turn device off and on error message appears that mbutton cannot be opened as it is not signed with trusted cerificate. Any tip how to avoid this message?
I switched to Magic Button, but the biggest problem is that it cannot be used with a hardware key .
I'm using the PIE hardware key as Ok/Close, but MB is just minimizing the apps, not closing them, which is really annoying.
If someone made it to close apps, please share ... if it is not possible, I'll switch to other task manager.
Try HandySwitcher from DinarSoft it can be assigned to a HW button. It can also sit on your tray and/or topbar.

tried it. i assigned it to the PIE (internet explorer) hardware button but when i press it, it just brings up its menu.
what i want to do is to close apps when pressing the PIE button or any other hardware button
just tried vijay's vjokbutt, works like a charm for me, does what I want
RE
Can HandySwitcher or MagicButton close PIE or OPERA?
If not, then which task switcher can?
Thanks
@kelu: HS is actually a Task Manager so it will show you the list of running tasks and wait for you to decide which to close [that is why you see the menu and task list] to individually close an app you may tap the 'ok' button or do a 'tap-n-hold' [depends on what you put in the settings] of course this is not done via hw buttons. What I do when I don't have a stylus handy is I just hit the hw button and select 'Close All' now it may be a hassle to some people with multiple apps running but too me it is ok since I rarely run multiple apps [or more often than not I close the app when I am done via 'close all' before running the next one].
you can actually close applications by using the SIP keyboard and choosing CTRL-Q
this has worked ever since my Casio E105 (man, that was a long time ago...)

yes u are right, the ok/close functionality via a hardware button is not really conected to the task listing of a task manager, but nevertheless I found it very usefull
as a task manager now I use SmallMenu and GSPPocketMagic (I'm testing both to decide), as they are very light and they also extend the start menu

XDA Mini S Phone operation problem

Hi, I have recently bought the 02 XDA Mini S (UK edition) off o2.
I am havin the following problem:
If I turn on my phone and let it load at the today screen:
1. use normal programs such as file explorer, IE
2. Then open up phone (so it shows the keyboard, start> Phone)
3. When I go into task manager to close programs that I have previously opened the tasks have no text but have a picture next to them. if i select say a program that has the file explorer sign next to it and then select switch to it will open a different program, for example IE or the phone keypad to dial numbers
4. If i close all normal programs in ther i can then move down and select programs that appear not to be there, for example the screen is white but something is selected because there is a blue selection box around that item.
5. I can close all programs fine, but then if i go into Start > phone, nothing seems to happen. i can get into the phone option through the contacts menu but if i press the "keypad" left soft key nothing seems to happen.
I have identified that when i go into task manager and then click Menu > View > change mode a task named " cprog.exe" has a title phone when the phone keypad is open. When i end the phone task this title of phone disappears.
I have tried running a new task to get it to open but nothing happens. I took the phone to several mobile shops and showed the blokes in there. generally they have all said that it appears to be a glitch in the software and that I should ask for a replacement.
One of my mates has one and he has the same problem so i think it could be a problem across all the XDA Mini S's does anyone else have this same problem. Can you let me know how to over come it (So far my only way of overcoming this problem is to turn the phone off, and then on again to acess the phone keypad again but this is very frustrating)
Cheers all
was having the same problem myself i think its something to do with task manager closing down key pad.
do a google for magic button and use that to close down running programs instead of task manager should sort it out.
cheers mate, is there any that you can recomed (ie the one that you have installed yourself) I don't want to muck up the phone.
cheers
here you go.since i started using this i have not had the keypad problem.

hope this is what you are looking for.[/code]
sorry link does not work i`ll try again;

ahh cool mate, your a life saver! can i easily uninstall this if i wish to, how would i go about it!
cheers for all you help
once its installed, how do i open this to close selected programs? cheers
use memory manager)
you're shutting down the phone app. don't shut it down or better still use settings/system/memory/running programs and stop what you want or stop all. you don't need to download stuff. it's been covered here before.

Phone/Magic button crashing

I'm using all the default ROMs from O2 on my Exec, I have the normal phone app. etc. - I've also got Magic Button installed because SPB Pocketplus's close button isn't working properly (it's just minimising).
Anyhow, when I make a call on the phone then try to close it it will not close. I can't seem to close it in System>memory>running programs because it doesn't appear and I end up having to reset my phone.
Can anyone think why this is happening? Do let me know if I've missed out any important details.
Closing phone app is not recommanded... You have to use another task manager which propose you to dissimulate the icon in the task bar. I tried a lot and Pocket plus, Wisbar lite, Handy Switcher and many more propose this option.
In fact, if you close phone application, you'll create problems with the connection to the mobile network. The only moment you can do that is for having more memory for an application and when you have activated flight mode. At that time, it's a good idea to close phone app. It's what I do. And to avoid a softreset to do that, you can use the vijay555 (the Great Vijay) app called PhoneToggle which really close it without softreset.
The phone application never actually `closes`.It just stays running in the background.
just press the red phone to return to the today screen.
Trying to close it with any task manager (espacially magic button for some reason) usually results in the Exec crashing.
Good task managers such as Wisbar Advance, ignore the phone app and leave it running in the background when you select `close all programs`,this stops the device freezing.
I`ve used Wisbar for years, and it really is THE best task manager available.
I tried using the red phone button but it does the same thing, at least after I've tried using the normal close button. Also, this never happened when SPB Pocketplus's close button was closing properly.
I can't use wisbar because I really don't like the skin features...
Does the phone icon show up next to the startbutton? If it does, tap and hold your stylus on it, it will show options. You can select an ignore option, this will hide the phone icon and stop magicbutton trying to close it.
RE
Try vBar. It doesn't close the phone application
BUT
it closes Pocket Hack Master :x
Going to try vBar - thanks for the suggestion.
vBar crashes the same as magic button when you try to close `all` programs.
You're right
I've been living with this accursed bug for a year.
It's why I need to reboot every cople of days - the more frequently depending on if you use the phone a lot.samewith the programs screen you can't close it or get back to today screen.
bloody thing! when is PPC vista coming out ;-)

"vBar crashes the same as magic button when you try to close `all` programs."
Doesn't happen to my QTEK 9000
Because you obviously have somehow configured vBar to ignore the phone application.
SPB Pocket Plus is programmed to minimise instead of close certain apps like ActiveSync and the Phone app, and not to display these apps in the ALT+TAB feature.
This is because you shouldn't really close either of those apps, they are needed for correct functioning of the device!
Try SPB Pocket Plus again and bind a key to the ALT+TAB feature, I think you will like that as you see the Phone app and ActiveSync no longer "get in your way" - I love it (just like Windows XP)
RE
Sorry, you're right that vBar indeed crashes the system BUT only when connected in ActiveSync state. If not AS then it behaves alright.
BTW, vBar does not have an 'EXCLUDED' list or something like that
Just tried InClose Mobile and finds that using IntelliClose it does not close Pocket Hack Master. Others like 'CLOSE ALL' and 'CLOSE ALL BUT ACTIVE' will close Pocket Hack Master. This is explained in the manual

Close, not minimize?

Whats a good program that will cause programs to actually close out in WM6 instead of just minimizing. Maybe one that adds a - next to the x so if you do want to minimize you can.
SPB pocket plus and Quick Menu are both good progs for the purpose.
Have you tried the HTC Task Manager with the X button feature?
The new ROM w/ GPS works by holding on the X, if you set it that way
2x SPB pocket plus! Works great. Never have to think or worry about what's running in the background.
I've been using HandySwitcher by DinarSoft for quite some time. It's nice because it adds an icon to the taskbar at the top and allows you to see all programs that are currently running, and close them individually or all at once. The only thing I find is that even though it has a menu option to launch at start-up e.g. after a reboot, it seldom actually did! A small but annoying issue.
I'm actually trying the HTC Task Manager as mentioned above as it is in the DCD rom. It's okay and does what you'll need, but not as configurable or flexible as HandySwitcher. I'm trying it just because it's there and I was bored It replaces the default X in the corner and allows you to either hit the X or hold it for a short time instead to close the active program. The only way to see what else is open is to return to the Today screen and tap the same icon.

no, where or how do i get or do that?
I Installed the new task manager, but the old one is still there. How do i get the new task manager to take priorty and work cause Its still not closing when i hold down x.
Have you tried resetting your device?
Go to start>settings>sytem>task manager and in the settings, se "x" to close down a program.

Task running in the background...

No matter if I close the program out by hitting the 'X' at the upper right or pressing 'ok', my phone will still lag throughout like there is still programs open, which to my knowledge, when I go to task manager, I have like 15 task open, WHICH i thought I close. So why are they still running in the bg, if I closed them out? It's a constant problem always leaving a program because its chugging along to go to my task manager.

"X" doesn't actually close the program, just minimizes it. In the past, HTC had a task manager that allowed you to select close apps upon pressing "X", but they removed that in the new "Sense". Do a search for Dutty's "HTC Task Manager."
