Now I've no idea what this does but while trawling through the registry looking for other things I found a folder called engineer mode with among other things a string which looks like its the code to enable engineering mode but I havn't yet made it do anything. Its located here:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\EngineerMode
Anybody else found this and/or know anything about it?
Just curious really!
found, yes
info, no
There's another thread at Modaco, but it has no additional information either

Note that GSMTestMode.exe is available in \Windows\ as well.
probably for creating logs on gsm data signal e.t.c inc gprs
possibly.. though such a logging function is already there; see windows\xpanellog.exe

what is the function of xpanellog.exe exactly...
just for fun,
I added the *#*#364#*#* as a phone number in a generic contact so I don't have to remember it or type it. Just select the name and hit send and voila!
By the way, this works and is slick. For the GSM nerd, it has some valuable info in it!
-Mc
P.S. There isn't a GSMTestmode.exe in the latest K-Jam ROM so if anyone wants to attach a copy, I'd love to try it.
what works? and what happend?
change the REG as in the first post. Reboot phone.
Now go to the phone and type *#*#364#*#* and in a second or two you'll get a screen full of GSM stats like the actual network you are connected to (310-410 in the case of Cingular here) as well as RSSI and the neighboring cell.
All fun stuff.

Hmmmm. would one of you guys that has it coming up with data load 1.12.10 for the radio and see if it disappears? I'd LOVE to know what the difference is that makes it work!
T-Mobile base US MDA load here with 1.12.10 radio on top of it.....
If this is a registry setting to enable the data flow, that'd be cool to find - I suspect it is, but have no clue where to go look for it....
I have Qtek 9100 with radio 1.12, and this is NOT working.
After changihg the key and dialing the magic number, I getting a window popped up with empty fields
FYI
not working with 2.8.7.2 FRE

It works with 2.16.9.1

Howdy folks,
I used to use WiViT SIM Status Switcher with my Magician, which worked well.
I would like a similar application for WM5. (WiViT SSS will not install on my Wizard)
Does anyone know of such an app that will work with WM5?
try this
it is a slight variaTION AND works with WM5 devices. i use it on the EXEC.
great stuff thanks ! i'll give it a shot
SSS does install now, thanks. But how about the license. The code you were given wont work on a different device. . . .
Just had contact with one of the Wivit developers.
A WM5 version is planned.
Just give these guys some more time.
I installed the download link on my mda II, but I can not start the application, does anyone has a function version / software for switching in WM5?
Does anyone know where I can buy a dual sim adapter for the Wizard (XDA Mini S) please? I don't want one where you have to cut up the SIM.
Thanks in advance.

It's a today item which has to be enabled from within settings
Next version STK compatible?
Hi,
I use a dual sim solution where you have to cut your sims.
This worked fine, and the new dual card seemed to work.
It even made a new entry in my program group called "Hypercard"
I didn't had time to fully check it out, but that program is gone after shut down the device or do a soft reset..
Any way to get it back?
I also tried Wivit Sim Status Switcher, but only the cab i found here (Sim Switcher.cab) worked, although i had to manually edit the registry to reflect my Dutch ROM. (Program Files to Programmabestanden)
It would be great if someone could create a Dutch cab or could tell me how to edit..
It doesn't seem to switch the SIM's though.. Possibly because i run WM5 or because the adapter uses STK? (Sometimes it just dissapears from Today/Vandaag screen..)
I really hope Wivit's next version is STK, WM5 compatible. (and multilangual?)
Thanks,
allegro16
This version of the sim-switcher works great with my mai-12 dual sim.

Disable in your settings / today / items the Sim Status Switcher
exit the settings screens until you're back in the today screen.
Enable the Sim Status Switcher again in your settings, and voila: There is your operator again.

Guys,
I've updated VJVolubilis to control the phone radio. I've put in a function to toggle the radio on and off, so for me, launching it twice will switch my dual sim. It should work on WM5, but I've only tested it on the emulator. Could I ask if anyone gets a chance, just to give it a quick go?

Like mentioned earlier in the topic:
Just disable/enable the plugin in the Today screen settings, it should work ok then.

The Languange file is just a text file, choose you language and just edit the text. I replaced it with ablank space
B.t.w. I still can't use it to switch SIMS, I need to go to the STK, switch and then turn the GSM function off and back on again. Anyone knows witch DUAL sim adapter handles V1 and V2 sims and can be used with WiViT's switcher?
Thanks, cheers,
cacti
le_cactus: have you tried VJVolubilis? I use a dual sim that uses fight mode to switch. VJVolubilis hopefully works on WM5 and Wm2003 to switch sims this way.

I've got a few problems with my t-mobile mda vario.
1. This thing is sloooooow. I've got an ipaq h1940 which is a similar spec but has half the ram and it runs twice as fast :? I've run the registry tweaks which seem to have improved things a bit but after startup and active syncing im getting up to 10 second delays before the start menu opens
2. The blutooth manager seems a bit sparse, and theres no option to change the serial ports from 6 or 7 :?
You lot seem infinately more knowledgeable than me on these things so hope you can help me.
Thanks in advance
Device info:
Rom version: 1.6.2.4 wwe
Rom date: 11/15/05
radio version: 01.12.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.23
Ext Rom version:1.6.2.105
do you have a taskmanager installed like SPB Pocket Plus or Magic Button? If not do so!
When you close a program with the above leftcross-button, WM5 only minimizes the program but does not close it. All program will just be running in the background. Use a taskmanager to close them for real.
If you have installed one and your device is still slow, i suggest overclocking it to 240 or 264 Mhz using Ompaclock, which is reasonably save to your device.
Install the latest Qtek rom, and your MDA will be much faster
thanks for the advice guys.
didnt realise you could overclock pdas
where do i find the qtek rom?
is it pretty easy to do this as ive heard horror stories about people making their devices unbootable and unable to claim on their warranties.
will try the software and the overclocking for now and report back
thanks for your help
the overclocking tips on this forum were very useful also. Thanks to all

ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/
For MDA, most people are using:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_RUU_Prodigy_2170702_217_20710_TMO_US.exe
This also includes some useful tweaks and keeps the TMobile settings.
Do it now, before you get too far into customizing, because you'll have to do it all over again after the upgrade!

A copy of the "stock" TMo ROM is in the same directory, so if things go bad, you can hopefully restore it.
Or you can back up your ROM yourself using aWizard -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386
The only tell-tale of the upgrade is that it is CID-unlocked, but not SIM-unlocked. WM5 is still there, but there a number of improvements.
So, you hard reset your device, you do the softreset to avoid all the branding rubbish and .... your phone won't work because you don't know the password to the internet connection settings and so on.
Question is: where can I find the t-mobile settings, web and walk included?
TIA!
There is a website I found recently called Google.com . It's some kind of search engine. If you enter "t-mobile uk gprs" and hit search it comes up with loads of links. not sure if the first one helps. Try it out.

Ah-ha. You must feel like a big man now.
Plus, you're wrong, they are not that easy to find. Looking at the first links on the search string you gave, they all list the username for the t-mob connection as being 'user', whereas mine is 't-mobile'.
here it is - but they dont work on some (ch) roms, works fine on my rom with web n walk

Not sure if it'll work on your device, but give this a go:
V
Vijay, maybe you want to rename the file to GPRSsettings ?
Hi guys, thanks very much for all the replies!
Signed_UNI_TMO_Connection_112100.CAB did the trick. I didn't seem to need the other file (MMS settings). The only other file I had to fish out of the extended rom is the long_dtmf one. If you don't put that on and try to dial a number, the phone hangs on keypresses
I'll let you know if I see any other required cab I might have missed. So far the phone is behaving slightly faster - not as big of a difference as I've seen on the O2 branded ones (which hurt from all the crap 02 leaves on them).
Cheers!
Would also like to add, without all the tmobile stuff from the extended rom, my battery life has doubled. Brilliant!

if U want to not install branding rubbish, after calibrating touch screen, ppc starts installig. U've got some 3seconds to softreset(small black hole below usb connector) press it and trick is done. Other way use ext_rom unlocker (www.buzzdev.net) remove or move (move is better, there are gprs, mms and other settings in .cab files, U'll figure it out which of them U need) all **** from ext_rom and hard reset

I found that entry a few days ago. I tried it, but nothing happens.
What do you can see/do in engeneering mode?
Just tried it. It opened a tabbed dialog that shows all the info the phone is getting from the cellular network.
Tower number, GPRS settings and a lot of stuff I know nothing about. Nice diagnostic tool.
P.S.
funnysurf, did you dial the number correctly? For me it opened the second I entered the last *. (on Jamin, ROM 2.13.9.123)
It works... Latest Dopod ROM.
HTC Engineering Mode
I've been hunting for a way to see this info. I design cellular networks and this stuff is my second language. However, I don't see anything in any fields of GSM Test Mode. They start with "N/A" then immediately go blank. I've done the registry setting but no change. When I do the '*#'-thing, I get nada. Got any clues?
FYI- I found a program called NiceTrack that shows only some of this info, so I know it's in there somewhere, but I need to see more.
jott2me, post your ROM version. On the Dopod's 2.15 it works.
GSM Test Mode
The key word is “built in” If you have a little program GSM TestMode.exe in your windows directory, this registry tweak makes this program visible and executable. Plus don’t forget to soft reset your device in order for registry modification to take effect.
By the way, if you use this data a lot, you can make a shortcut to this utility as to any executable. No need to dial the *# a hundred times. Or just add it to your speed dial…
You guys sure respond fast! Wow! And thanks!
JWalker, here's my info:
ROM version: 1.8.10.2 WWE
ROM date: 12/10/05
Radio version: 01.09.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.20
ExtROM version: 1.8.10.104
(I've only had this about a month so I'm leary of changing ROM versions.)
aleksandr,
I'm running Spb's Today screen (it's nice) and I've got an icon that puts me right into GSMTestMode.exe when the reg tweak is set to 1. I've reset several times still no luck seeing info. I made a contact with the '*#' stuff but when I dial it, I get, "The number you have dialed..." message.
Am I missing something?
Thanks for your help.
GSM menu
How did you reset your device, programmatic soft reset or with your stylus? Soft reset with stylus will erase registry modifications without saving them. Sorry, don't mean to use "dummy" talk, just want to make sure all proper steps are followed to eliminate all possible reasons in order to find the solution. Another reason for this issue could be in rom, but wait for J. Walker to respond. I'm in the office right now and don't have emulators here to experiment with your rom version. In the mean time make sure you’ve made all necessary registry changes in right registry entries, and soft reset using program, something like Nice start or shut down XP or SPB Pocket Plus reset function.
I've been using TRE to edit the registry then resetting it using the stylus and the hole on the right side. Every reg change I've made shows up after a reset as changed. I don't know of another way to soft reset it. Even when I've changed it back to 0 to try using JUST the GSM Test Mode.exe, it won't work. That's proof that the registry does see the changes (I think).
(... and I'm the newbie here so "dummy" talk is A-Okey doke w/ me.)
Guess, it is a good idea to change to 2.x ROM. The only thing I know that it works fine with my original S200 with Dopod's 2.15.13.27 ROM. It much morу stable and fast, so you will got the better feeling
Hi,
on Vodafone ROM 2.15.3.26 GER it does not work. I create an Link to \Windows\GSMTestMode.exe and do it that way
I tried creating the link to GSMTest but that still didn't work. I think I'm going to have to change ROMs. I'm very reluctant because I don't know where or how to get and install one. I've seen that this site is full of talk about ROM upgrades, but I haven't seen one that tells me how to do it.
The thing is that what I'm really really after is not just the GSMTest screen so it may or may not even involve a new ROM. What I really want is to learn where the info is hiding and how to display it and make some of it usable in graphical format (something like "NiceTrack" does but with all the info not just a couple fields). It's more of a programming thing. So if anyone knows where this info is stashed and how to read it, I'd go that direction. I thought that GSMTest would be a quick & easy step toward what I'm after.
any change someone could add the gsm test program. I did found the engineering key in the registry, but no program in the windows directory and entering the code on the phonedial pad didn't work as well.
i'm running tuma 1.3 wm5 rom on a qtec 9090
