I've got a few problems with my t-mobile mda vario.
1. This thing is sloooooow. I've got an ipaq h1940 which is a similar spec but has half the ram and it runs twice as fast :? I've run the registry tweaks which seem to have improved things a bit but after startup and active syncing im getting up to 10 second delays before the start menu opens
2. The blutooth manager seems a bit sparse, and theres no option to change the serial ports from 6 or 7 :?
You lot seem infinately more knowledgeable than me on these things so hope you can help me.
Thanks in advance
Device info:
Rom version: 1.6.2.4 wwe
Rom date: 11/15/05
radio version: 01.12.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.23
Ext Rom version:1.6.2.105
do you have a taskmanager installed like SPB Pocket Plus or Magic Button? If not do so!
When you close a program with the above leftcross-button, WM5 only minimizes the program but does not close it. All program will just be running in the background. Use a taskmanager to close them for real.
If you have installed one and your device is still slow, i suggest overclocking it to 240 or 264 Mhz using Ompaclock, which is reasonably save to your device.
Install the latest Qtek rom, and your MDA will be much faster
thanks for the advice guys.
didnt realise you could overclock pdas
where do i find the qtek rom?
is it pretty easy to do this as ive heard horror stories about people making their devices unbootable and unable to claim on their warranties.
will try the software and the overclocking for now and report back
thanks for your help
the overclocking tips on this forum were very useful also. Thanks to all

ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/
For MDA, most people are using:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_RUU_Prodigy_2170702_217_20710_TMO_US.exe
This also includes some useful tweaks and keeps the TMobile settings.
Do it now, before you get too far into customizing, because you'll have to do it all over again after the upgrade!

will wm5 still be on there?
is there a way i can back everything up in case things go wrong?
thanks for the other links also, will check them out.

A copy of the "stock" TMo ROM is in the same directory, so if things go bad, you can hopefully restore it.
Or you can back up your ROM yourself using aWizard -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386
The only tell-tale of the upgrade is that it is CID-unlocked, but not SIM-unlocked. WM5 is still there, but there a number of improvements.

Dear all,
I'm new here, I've had a good look through the forum, but I feel a lot of the information is a little over my head. I was hoping for some advice for my new MiniS out of the box:
Regarding setting up my device, are there any programs I should or shouldn't install? Or anything I should uninstall immediately?
Am I better off with the O2 ROM, or is there another I should flash my device with?
Are there any particularly good pieces of software that you could recommend?
Thank-you very much for your help,
s_h_a_h_i_d
look at htc magician forumpart (topics)
look at htc magician forumpart (topics)
Surely since the XDA Mini S is an HTC Wizard, not a Magician, he'd be better off looking at the Wizard forum?
o2 mini is a magician init
Yes, but the thread title refers to an O2 Mini S.....
He is refering to MiniS mate.
HA HA, Now that the squabbles are over, , I'd like to add my bit.
The best thing anyone can do first off with the MINI S is toss that o2 customised crap right off.
I am assuming you have'nt put too much on it yet
Press the soft reset button. (Under the IR port)
As you let go of that reset button, make sure you are pressing both the comm manager button, AND the voice buttons. Thats the top left side and upper right side buttons.
This is called a hard reset and WILL ERASE EVERYTHING prom the phones memory.
Do the screen calibration and cut/paste bit.
When it say's "Tap the screen to start using your device", be ready to press the soft reset again.
This is because when you tap the screen, a customisation box will appear.
PRESS THE RESET BUTTON, when you see this box.
The phone reboots and hey presto, proper PDA, not o2's idea of one.
Hope this helps.
Just to add to the above, there is a thread on here regarding decent software for the PDA.
Have a look through the thread list and you'll see it.
I would recommend Resco as a decent file manager with some excellent features. Be careful with some of these tools if you are not sure what you are doing.
Other than that, have fun.

Hi Jerry-S and everyone.
I've just got a T-Mobile MDA Vario, the Wizard version of T-Mobile.
Would you recommend me doing the same hard reset so that I can get rid of T-Mobile settings?
My Device Information shows:
ROM version: 1.6.2.4 WWE
ROM date: 11/15/05
Radio version: 01.12.10
Protocol version: 4.0.13.23
ExtROM version: 1.6.2.105
Can I update to a newer ROM and if yes where can I download it and how can I update ROM, please?
Thanks for your help.
Rgds,
PPB
Hi BUSPBP,
I am a relatively new user myself and won't offer advice on anything I am not sure of.
I have seen ROM updates on here for other networks but as I am on o2 and running my most recent ROM, I can't comment.
Just to be sure you understand though, the updating of a rom that isn't specifically for your unit has many risks. At the end of the day, it's up to you so just put ROM in the search page and have a look at what comes up.
As for removing the Network Provider software, I would assume that the process is the same for them all, as the extra operator features are installed from an extended ROM.
That's to say, the main OS is installed first and then the extra stuff installs afterward.
If you can replace things that you have put on your phone then give it a go, it'll either work or not.
At the end of the day, if you like the extra things and want them back, do another hard reset and let everything install as it wants.
Hope this helps.
Hi Jerry-S,
Thanks for your help. After reading through some threads in this forum I've decided to upgrade my Wizard with the new Qtek ROM. It now works much faster and I don't have any more problem with Wifi connection.
Can you or anybody please advise what does the ExtROM do and if I can exclude it from the device? Any good in doing this?
PPB
If you think of it this way, it's a little easier to understand.
When the device is new or has a hard reset, the following happens.
(If I get this wrong, I'm sure someone will let me know. LOL)
1. The device powers up and a section called the Bootloader starts.
2. As the operating system is not there, it installs it from a ROM.
3. The operating system then runs and you do the stylus calibration
and the date / time settings
4. That is the PDA set up.
5. After that, another ROM is installed, (If you let it), which contains all
the customised software for your particular phone company supplier.
All it means is that the basic Windows OS is running at the same time as the custom software and the Windows functions are accessed by the company customisations that you are presented with.
Because of this, the processor in the PDA is working in effect, twice as hard and it is slower.
As far as I am aware, there is nothing in this custom layer that can't be done directly in the Windows layer.
I would like to upgrade my ROM also as the o2 ROM is one of the oldest versions released, but as I see it, once installed, there is currently no way to downgrade back to the previous version if something goes wrong. Thats the only reason I have'nt done it.
As for removing it completely, I am not sure. I have seen posts on here reffering to that, but I think it is contained somewhere that you couldn't make use of anyway. i.e. Making use of the extra storage space that it takes up.
I know I get a bit long winded, but I have a bit of a job explaining stuff. LOL, sorry.
Hi Jerry-S,
I remember someone told that we could prevent the ExtROM from installation by soft-resetting before that process, but since I don't know yet what are included in the ExtROM and if there's any good in doing so I haven't tried it yet.
I don't know if the O2 device and network settings have anything too special that you could hardly set. In my case though I've got the T-Mobile version I am actually using Orange, so it's perhaps easier for me to come to the decision. And it's worth it for me. No problem with the upgrade, given that I've unlocked CID in advance as someone has warned. And the device is running much faster. That has even halted my intension of doing the overclock, at least for now
PPB
Comments recieved.
I must admit, I kept looking and looking at the ROM file on my computer thinking errrrrrrmmmmm...............
Well I did it, but I didn't notice any real increase in speed, actually it seemed slower to me.
That in mind I though, balls and put the o2 Rom back on.
As for the EXT ROM reatures, I think the main advantage is that the MMS and Mobile web settings are set for you, but those could be found quite easily.
Howdy,
I'm trying to run some java apps (GMM and Opera Mini) on my new MDA. IE has no idea what to do with the files, and after calling tmobile I was told what everyone on this forum probably already knows, the MDA ships from tmobile with java support removed.
Is it possible to get Java to run on this thing without flashing the rom? I plan on doing that in the future, but I don't have the time right now and would really like GMM for my road trip this weekend.
Thanks,
slick

Do you have any particular suggestions for a ROM that works in the US and runs java?

Xelencin's T-mobile USA 2.24 Custom rom fits the bill - automatic cid unlocking and includes java see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53300
Or if you wanted an official rom many use Qteks 2.17 WWE rom and add their own settings. ftp://[email protected]/Wi...digy_2170702_21707102_20710_QTEK_WWE_Ship.exe
Awesome.
I ended up doing a backup / update last night and it went very well. Thanks for your help.
Strangely enough, the IBM websphere java manager seems to work a tad better than the one included in the rom (at least as far as GMM is concerned).
WIth the included midlet manager, gmm asks if it's ok to use airtime every time the program wants to download some new info. If browsing through a planned route, this is pretty infuriating. For whatever reason, the IBM version seems to remember that setting for your session. Also, it displays jpegs.
Yep the title is right-
I've searched the forums countless times and read the wiki. Although i am more than technically experienced to perform the "upgrades" I cant quite nail down the step by step procedures for my device and the upgrades i desire.
Feel free to rip me a new one- but please direct me down the right path.
Oh i'm not in any kind of hurry.
I have a Cingy/ATT 8525
and I want to run Black and I want all the worthy tweaks that
allow one to have an extended array of functionality.
Thanks in advance and sorry for creating clutter.
Hi
I dont understand what you are asking - are you asking how to flash the black 2.5 rom? The instuctions to do so are in the black 2.5 thread, and also on the RUU installer package that you can download.
All tweaks are also included in the black 2.5 thread.
Its quite a simple flash process.
1) Backup all your personal data as your the device will be formatted (not including the microSD card)
2) Connect your phone via activesync on a winxp pc
3) Run the installer
4) In approx 5 mins, its all done
hi nmonger
thanks for the advice.
What i am trying to accomplish is get a fully tweaked 8525- or as damn
close as humanly possible.

I think that first you have to figure out what do you want with your phone...there are a lot of Tweaks and changes and improves you can do to your 8125, but not all of them could be usefull for you or ...
My personal sugestion is that read again the forum and decide wich things want to change and the go for them... everyone here can help you and there are already a lot of threads whit step-to-step info about upgrading and Tweaking your device.
I could also sugest that you follow the upgrading guide here on the forum and first upgrade the bootloader, then the OS and the Radio... and after that you will have a better phone and the time to look for more changes to apply...

really depends on what you want to use the device for. upgrading is easy [if you read and follow the guides], and the available roms on this site are pretty damn stable (for me at least). Depending on which rom you install, you will need different tweaks, add-ons. For example, for your 8525, at a minimum, you will want the cingular settings (which some roms bake in) and the keyboard fix. Everyone has their favorite installs. For me, a corporate user of the 8525 on Cingular, I have installed the following (keep in mind this is a subjective list) ... I don't watch video or listen to music much with this device, so I have not tweaked it out for these things:
Must haves (for me)
Goodlink
Bandswitch 1.2.3
BatteryStatus today plugin
Cingular Settings (by wpbear)
ComButtong-Toggle-Vibrate-Fix
8525 Keyboard Patch
Cyberon Voice Dialer (I use it, and I know it is lame)
Pocket IE Card Cache (to cache on my SD Card)
Acrobat Reader LE
Speed patch (buzzing for Black 2.5 when I run that ROM)
MPM patch (for Custel 1.3 when I run that ROM)

Interesting list you have there weinson.
So i have already stated on my journey here is what i have so far, its not a long list but i suppose its a good starting point.
WM6 Pro Black 2.5
Radio Version 1.40.30.00
What i need my 8525 to be is as highly efficient as possible i need the apps to open quickly and be easily found, i do a little traveling so i need my music and maybe a video or two. Web browsing to be effortless because i need to get on the internet for my job (i am a real estate agent) and i need the best WiFi connectivity available in addition to the 3g connection because sometimes im in Wifi enable buildings and cant get a "cell signal", thats also why i am looking at VOIP options and lastly i am searching for a non-windows push service, i'm really going to miss my BB until i can get a reliable solution.
I want to thank everyone for there help so far and the members for this forum ive been lurking for a while and am very impressed with its diligently helpful atmosphere.
Keep sending those suggestions- I will continue my search.

Use a registry editor and add the following to your BA registry:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Bluetooth/Devices
Add a new DWord: DefaultMTU with the Hex value of 2a0
Capitalization counts in these settings.

Sorry, I should have been more clear, the capitalization I was reffering to was in the DWord "DefaultMTU" 2a0 or 2A0 (Zero not Oh) is a hex number and will be fine upper or lower case.
like all the others, I recommend switching to explodes or PDAveit rom, they are quitre faster
Heres a question though. I put the same wm6 on both my own t mobile MDA and my best mates orange spv m2000 with all the same process's same version and same other bits at the end of the wizard. His runs dog slow and mine does not? Are these issues down to differing hardware?
you know bri you could be right i have had the XDA The M2000 AND the MDA3and i have to say out of them all the MDA has been the best in looks and performance in saying that the PV Rom is quality and all is good i wish i could tweek it a lill bit more and make things a lill bit smoother but its getting there
Ive been searching for some answers but havent found any clears responses
I saw on youtube a g4 8125 with the touchflo cube where he is flipping the screens with his fingers like a iphone (preferably the black & grey interface)(but not an iphone interface)
I read that to unlock my phone i must use soft/hard spl
I have found hard spl & got it to work (I see the spl xx.opi, so i know it worked)
I have tried to use many roms & i always get an error saying this rom is not for my device/phone....what am i doing wrong ? (I also think there were g4 roms)
Now i need to know what to do to get the touchflo w/ finger flipping installed on the phone
Any links to cab files or rom to do it along w/ a good tutorial to do it would be greatly appreciated.
I have done all kinds of things to my blackberry 8100...that was easy...this is a little more complicated so i guess you can call me a noob
Also for some reason when i link up to activesnyc 4.5 when i try to run a rom upgrade it disconnects sometimes....is that normal ?
Anyway any & all info on what im trying to do would be great

I run into this a lot, too. The ROM is not the fault, it's the RUU. Use MUN's RUU to install all of your ROMs and you won't ever see that fault again:

Frankly, I'd recommend just flashing up to the ROM in my sig, or to the CR86 Touch HD ROM. Both are equally useful.
Angel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468576
CR86: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442232
With either of these ROMs, you will rarely find a need to dig through the menu, and since Angel has incorporated QuickMenu, you rarely need to pull out a stylus, and rarely need to close a bunch of folders after finishing with a program.

It's Microsoft, which explains both "a little more complicated" and "is that normal"...for both, the answer is yes, because it's Microsoft.
