Activesync-related SVCHOST now sucking all my CPU!
-----------------------------------------------------
Been having a few issues with Activesync, and uninstalled it. All is fine with it off.
When I install it again though, I now have an svchost.exe taking 70-90% of my CPU cycles, and 98-99% when it's syncing.
Microsoft, I hate you with a passion. What's going on?!!

Is this on PC or PDA? On PC it's advisable to close Activesync if you're not using it, since it can chew up around 8% cpu in idle.
On PDA, phew, bane of my life too! But use a taskmanager to close it likewise when you don't need it.
If you've not got another taskkiller, use this one:
This is from the Microsoft SDK, just modded very slightly by me to allow you to close errant apps, especially useful when I was developing VJBigPhone.
Be careful, it can close pretty much any app, including system stuff like GWES. But if that's one you want, that's what'll 'appen.
VJTrayTaskList
If you press the "Ok" button it'll sit in your Today Tray for ease of use.
Click the checkbox to allow you to close stubborn apps.

On the PC - I wonder if it's Wifi related - just got back fromn the shop, and the problem isn't showing itself, but I have wifi turned off.
Hmm.....
EDIT: Nope.... it's just gone to 70-99% again, and performance has gone to the dogs... no wifi.
This is beginning to annoy me.

WM5 aways running in the background after use

hmm.. got my xda mini s for xmas, battery does not seem that great so i looking at ways of saving my battery, now ive noticed that all the programs i use do NOT seem to close after use, ive found this out by checking the task manager. is there something wrong with my device?
That's the way things work on the PocketPC, it's called SmartMinimize. The system will close any apps when it needs to. In theory...
If you want to close apps yourself, use a taskkiller like GSPocketMagic or SmallMenu.
I've made a tiny program that can be assigned to a hardware key to do the same kind of things (still in testing).
Read about it here

I just assigned a close all and close all but current to mort button. Very easy.

Of course the other side of the coin is that if you close all programs, they take longer to load next time you need them. Which can be annoying on WM5 devices because of the slow flash memory. So many task managers (including GSPocketMagic) allow you to specify which programs to keep running, so you can switch to them instantly (e.g. Messaging).

Spot on, I use SPBPocketPLus to close all programs appart from IE, Outlook and Phone. Leaves plenty of free memory and the apps I use the most then fire up instantly
Fantastic guys, thank you got SPBPocketPLus, works like a wet dream!

That's funny ? I was just thinking last night as I charged our mini's that they had done really well on a first charge 7 full days ! I charged them both before wrapping on Xmas eve and they only finally expired last night at 11pm  Ok so we are not fiddling with them constantly
What are the rest of you getting charge wise ?
Got mine yesterday, and I'm really amazed by the battery life (in ON state, cause is hasn't had much time to sleep yet )
This morning I've been listening to a webradio through wireless + using ICQ and MSN, I still had 50% of battery after 2 hours.
Before getting this one I had a blueangel, doing the same things with it would already have killed the battery by that time. I'm now waiting to see how it lasts just playing MP3s with screen off, the BA could give me 9hrs if underclocked at 100MHz. Unfortunately no clock setting tool yet for the wizard, still waiting...

Battery drains 50% a day...whilst idling!

Guys,
pretty much as the topic says...it drains about 40 to 50% a day when it is idle....if I am using it it can be anything up to a 1% a minute.
Any hints on where to look - tried using battlog to log the usage but i cannot open the subsequent file at all.

Wiggz,
Try checking if you're in a dead-zone with no reception? (Your phone may be constantly trying to search for a signal). Do this for Wi-Fi too. Make sure it is not constantly scanning for a network.
Similarly, open up your task manager. How many programs do you see running in the background? Remember that pressing X in Windows Mobile does not mean it closes the application, it only means that the application is minimized.
Cheers.
Wifi is hardly ever on. My signal is always constant, but I have my data connection on 24/7 for emails. The only program I ever see consume CPU power when idle is "changescreen". I always check that a program has closed properly when I click the 'x'.
I know data connection on eats some battery but jesus - not that much surely?

Wiggz,
The question remains, how many programs do you see when you open up the task-manager? You did not answer the question.
From what I've observed with my friend's Toshiba Portege, he lost 30% in an hour. He did not realize that he had 15-ish programs "idling" in the background with very little RAM use. Long story short: Turn everything off if you don't need it and just keep the Task Manager running. He now goes through the night with 1 ~ 2% loss.
Good day.

When I open up task manager I see 4 applications running (taskmgr, manila, cprog x2) - when I check the processes I have many more obviously. However these are all processes I'd expect to be running (gwes.exe, cprog.exe, device.exe, services.exe etc...)
Any more advice?

Wiggz,
Unfortunately, that's all from me (I dont even have this phone yet, I'm saving up for it in the next couple of weeks). Try turning off your data and see how it goes. But damn, 50% loss just on idling, something in the background is definitely killing the battery.
Cheers!
Thanks for the help anyway - annoying the crap out of me. My Artemis used to go for days without needing a charge...I suppose my battery could be screwed but I want to troubleshoot first before I bite the bullet on that one - suppose I could hard reset and see what the drain is?
Things idling in RAM should not have any significant hit on the battery life. However, having the data connection on 24/7 will indeed kill your battery life, especially if you're using 3g or higher (Edge drains alot aswell, but not as much as 3g and higher). Since emails seem important to you, I'm guessing you have it set to dl every 5min (which is the most frequent setting). If applicable, change it to 10 or 15; granted it's possible you do need to get your emails ASAP and you need the 5min frequency. Now regardless whether you changed the frequency of the auto dl or not, set your data connection to terminate after a 1min of not being used. This should help you get a good bit more out of your battery.
(I have emails dl every 30min and RSS feeds and push pages once an hour. Data enables itself when needed and then terminates after a minute of not being used. This allows me to get much more than a days usage out of the phone. The only way I kill the phone is if on top of all that, I listen to music/radio for about 6 hours)
Hope it helps
oh, and in case you don't know, HD Tweak is one way to terminate data after X amount of time of not being used.
do you have stock or cooked rom btw? duttys v3 xt, for example, is known to drain battery a lot.

i had similar problem, battery got drained overnight or during the day with a speed of light... but in my case the bad boy was Palringo (IM) which was auto starting with every phone reset and did not show on taskbar...it is so bad that it drained fully charged battery in aprox. 6-7 hours. so now i hardly use it, and whenever i do i make sure its closed properly....

personally I have had no issues whatsoever. The voice calls that I'm guessing they're referring to is VOIP which uses your data plan to make the call as I don't see why it would interfere with normal calls. I think the easiest thing is just to give it a try, and if it doesn't work for you, then let us know and hopefully we'll be able to come up with a different solution.

Well the reason I mentioned it was that I enabled that as one of a number of weaks and ended up having to hard reset as I wasn't getting Texts in a timely manner etc....it was probably another setting but I couldn't be sure.
Will try again. Only other thing is that data connection on 24/7 is great for a quick browse here and there and stock updates etc...

why is that, by the way?
You haven't got Sprite Virtual Mobile installed have you? I tried it out on my HD and it sucked the life out of it for some strange reason. And it wasn't even showing up in task manager.
Is there a list of processes, services etc that we can safely remove/disable to work in the background? What say all?
glad this thread came up - my blackstone has been absolutely fine until I had the genius idea of "optimising" everything about 2 weeks ago with HD Tweak...
Now it's not HD Tweaks fault, but whatever I have changed means that it can drain a full charge overnight, and by morning its nigh on empty, i'm going to try and change it all back today, but for sure some setting I've changed is sucking juice like no-ones business.
FWIW - I havent installed anything during this time, the only thing i've changed is some of the settings - so it's not a "rogue" app draining the battery.
OT - sorry for the semi-hijack - I guess my point is that i'll have a play with the settings and see if I can determine what's eating the battery and then compare with other people.
that's fine (re: hijack) I think the two topics are closely connected.....not sure of the answer though

ta - me either - i've changed a few settings and made a note - will post if it doesnt eat the battery overnight over the next couple of days.

GT-i9000m has been locking up recently to the point of removing the battery.

It went from extremely rarely doing it to three or four times just the other night in the span of a few hours. I can't reproduce it on command but it happens when I lock the screen and put it in my pocket. Then sometimes when I take it out it is entirely non-responsive, even the power button doesn't work. I have to remove and reinsert the battery.
It could be ADW Launcher or WidgetLocker since those are the only two programs always running, but I was hoping someone else experiences a similar issue. It hasn't happened when I normally lock it yet though, so it could also be the proximity sensor maybe?
Having the same issue (on Bell as well), but not running either of those two apps. Was almost to the point of returning the phone and then installed JM7 and it's been better, although not perfect. Last night it locked up with NoLED displaying an icon, so I've deleted that app to see if that's the issue. It hasn't locked up today, but it did reboot a few hours ago seemingly at random.

Oh, that doesn't sound pleasant at all...
I'm outside of Bell's 30 day exchange period plus I've talked for over 30 minutes, so I'll have to go through Samsung if it completely breaks. On the plus side, a phone from them should be three button recoverable.
Although I can't be without a phone for weeks, I hope it's not the SD card.
Mine Lags like crazy once every few days till the point I need to restart it. Any idea why this is do?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Hold your horses people....
before you jump about the lag, and or one click lag fix and such
first you have to investigate what is running on your phone.
just over the weekend (since XDA was down) i stalled over 400 Apps
my phone slowed down to snail speed, then i ran my Startup Manager software (many to choose from)
I suggest Startup Cleaner 2.0 then uncheck everything, leave only the apps that you want to run during start up
reboot your phone and presto, fast as new!
if you can find version 2.1 of startup manager that one is even better
keep note, start up manager apps are not the same as task killer apps
it only run once during start up, and it helps you easily select what should and should not run during start up, so it doesn't stay in memory after it runs
on the same topic
you should also configure your Task Killer apps to kill everything, and add only the wants you want to be running to the ignore list.
that will keep the phone working smoothly even without the "one click lag fix"
i'm still running stock on my JH2 i9000m

All gamer has a good sugestion here BUT we are going to get people flaming the fact that Android shouldnt need task managers.....
Ho hum..
TBH in my experience, I have found (after a couple of hard resets) that there appears to be a size limit for installed apps. Once I get over this size limit, I get LAGTASTIC, phone slows to a snails pace, then I remove a few of the apps and I am back at light speed again....
I cant say what the limit is, but I know when I have hit it - I would then uninstall a lame app or two and get back running.
Yes a lot of people "claims" that, but yet you do a search in Android Market, you see LOTS of Task Manager / Killer apps for every phone.
they were not designed for Galaxy S, they were designed long ago for all the other phones that had and still have the same problems of memory management causing lags
Android is not robust enough to survive without one
heck not even Windows 7 or Windows Mobiles phone
I just read that possibly the phone freezes while trying to find a signal. As this problem has only recently started, and I just recently moved into university, and many buildings receive little to no wireless signal, I think it's more than a coincidence. I'll try going to plane mode before entering lecture halls and basements.

[FIX] Battery drain from Awake bar constantly on

First and foremost, this will only apply to you if you have seen the following symptom:
You go to Settings -> About phone -> Battery usage -> click on the graph above and see "Awake" as a solid bar instead of (mostly) lining up with the "Screen on" spotted bar below. Here's my previous thread of when I discovered this issue when my "Awake" bar showed solid for an entire 8 hours when my "Screen on" would show frequent off/on's:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13938317&postcount=772
I found my SGSII was getting decent battery life, but idle was certainly worse than my SGSI. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me what could be causing it given I was running the exact same apps as my SGSI 2.2.1 handset, but the solid Awake bar did not sit well with me.
Observations:
1) After 8+ hours of solid Awake, I would have no apps running under Settings -> Applications -> Running services except for those that I normally would expect in the background... Settings, NoLED, Google Voice, Swype, etc.
2) I noticed that under this "Running services" screen, if you hit Menu and select "Show cached processes," there are actually other cached processes that are in a semi-dormant state. Are they running or are they not? Hmmm....
3) After a system restart, the Awake and Screen on would line up once again.
Suspicion/Hypothesis:
Some app that I normally have running... even if I completely exit out of, it would sit under cached processes and somehow still keep the device awake.
Testing:
First, wanted to see which app when normally running would keep the phone "Awake." After a few days of testing, isolated it down to eBuddy, which is a chat client I used to have running nonstop on my Froyo SGS. So, after several hours of running eBuddy and seeing a solid Awake bar, I exited out of eBuddy properly (Menu -> Exit), ensured it was no longer running under Running services, and tested it for another 4 hours. Sure enough, with the device mostly idle and eBuddy shutdown, the Awake remained solid/on!
So, I then revisited Settings -> Applications -> Running services -> Menu -> Show cached processes, I saw eBuddy was still cached and taking up memory. So, I clicked on the process and chose Force stop. Afterwards, I let the device idle for a few hours more, and the Awake and Screen on lined up once again.
Conclusion:
I'm not sure if this is a Gingerbread bug or eBuddy bug or a combination thereof, but something changed in the code from Froyo to Gingerbread. Probably has to do with this caching feature, but there ARE apps out there that will keep your device constantly on even if you do properly exit out of them.
Solution:
I used to run "Advanced Task Killer" on my SGS with Froyo but never bothered with Gingerbread because people much smarter than me on here have said time and time again "it's not necessary for Gingerbread, you're wasting time/battery life." Well, that still may be true, but given there are these rogue apps that will cause Gingerbread to stay constantly awake, Advanced Task Killer is the best solution at this time.
(It may not be pretty, but hey, it works.)
So, I installed Advanced Task Killer, did a fresh boot, put all the system apps and other apps I don't want ever shut down (Email, Swype, Settings, etc) on the ignore list, turned the kill setting to every hour, and let it sit. I can say for the past 2 days, my idle battery life has improved significantly. Normally by the end of my work day, I'd be skimming along around 40-50%. (Keep in mind, I use the phone primarily for business, which means 2 push E-mails, 2 pull E-mails, constant text messaging, and lots of phone calls.) The last two days, I have been easily at 70-80% by the end of the day. For instance, right now at 4PM CST, I am still at 82% remaining battery.
Also, keep in mind, I have just about EVERYTHING else I don't need frozen/uninstalled through Titanium backup. This includes but not limited to WIFI Sharing, all the hubs, all the readers, all the SNS junk, AP News, Accuweather, etc.
And the most telling bit that the fix is working: My Screen on and Awake line up perfectly with no more solid bar for Awake. And, this is even after running eBuddy last night.
I know this won't help everyone, but hopefully, it will be of use for some of you. Good luck!
If you're managing to kill apps that keep the phone awake, does it prevent you from receiving messages on eBuddy when the screen is off?

Interesting question. I had Advanced Task Killer running all last night, and I woke up to messages in eBuddy in the morning. So, my immediate answer to you would be "no," but this will probably take more testing.
Maybe, I'll set ATK to an aggressive 15 minute kill, and have someone message me after 15 minutes of idling with eBuddy running...
I have noticed that with eBuddy actively running, you cannot select it under ATK and kill it. You must exit out of eBuddy properly (Menu -> Exit) for its active process to shut down. Little did I know though... it would still float around in your "Cached processes" afterwards and keep your device Awake!
Well I've been using ATK since this morning and I can't find any change in Android OS ..
It's still high..
Anyway ATK reports that all the games I downloaded from gameshub are active..
And even if it kills them, they appear again in like 10 minutes.. It's really wierd

I don't use game hub, but I do have a bunch of games on my device, including the larger Gameloft games. And, I can say for a fact that I do not have any of them ever running in the background.
Something else is keeping them alive, and has nothing to do with ATK. ATK will only help to kill cached processes, but if something is launching them again, that's what you need to look into stopping.
Well.. I do not like tools like the Advanced Task manager.. BUT looking at battery drainage it seems to do wonders!
8 hours of light usage (display 45 mins) --> 75% battery left
3g on (with JuiceDefender à 30 mins) + sync (so I receive whatsapp messages & mail etc)
Listened to music / radio for about 1-1.5 hours
Android OS is sadly still at 36%, Display at 22%
But this I can live with !
Thanks!
[edit]
It would obv. be nicer to be at 80+% without that Android bug... Ah, and I did delete / freeze all that Samsung crap with Titanium, didnt really help much! I can also recommend getting CPU spy to see how much your phone actually is in the sleep mode (around 80% for me!)

Yeah, I wouldn't run ATK unless I absolutely have to. Like I said in my first post, it is a "brute force" method of ensuring apps are completely closed out and there are no rogue cached processes keeping your device awake. Since I've installed it, the "solid Awake bar" phenomena is completely resolved... and in return, I get much better battery life.
And yes, this is of course on top of freezing just about everything Samsung and anything else I don't need or care to use.
Couldnt agree more!
One questions, what is your "Android OS" % at?

Task killer is a must
Uninstalling/freezing rogue Samsung apps is a must
ONLY THE COMBINATION WORKS and it works well indeed.
Mmm bizarre! I was waiting for the hordes of people telling you that 'task killers' are unnecessary and stupid.

ONLY THE COMBINATION WORKS and it works well indeed.

Mmm bizarre! I was waiting for the hordes of people telling you that 'task killers' are unnecessary and stupid.
Thank you very much for your findings.

Glad to hear it's working for you guys. With Advanced Task Killer running in the background, I haven't had the "solid Awake bar" reappear again... my Awake bar is always segmented and match up fairly well with my Screen on bar.
Idle battery life is very much acceptable now and definitely no worse than my SGS.
I've always enjoyed your posting and i'm glad you didn't just jump on the bandwagon like everyone else. This is definitely the type of posting we need where everyone work together to solve/identify the issues at hand.

Appreciate the kind words. Like I said in my first post, many people much smarter than me/in-tune with Android have said it's unnecessary. But, you're right... there are way too many "DO THESE STEPS AND IT WILL FIX EVERYTHING" posts on here with 0 to little evidence to back up the claims. In the end, nothing beats thorough testing and proven results.
I for one hope 2.3.4 resolves this bug... ultimately, I'd like to not have to run ATK altogether. But for now, this is a solution that works.

It works with Freezing/Uninstallin Samsung "bad apps" (WiFi Sharing, Social Hub, etc.). I suggest you emphasize that more in your initial post.
ATK itself helps but ATK is always late (30 minutes or one hour).
That's what I recommend to freeze/uninstall without crippling core functionality:
1 WiFi Sharing and WifiManager
2 Samsung apps (Social Hub, Days, Yahoo Finance, AP News, Games Hub, Readers Hub, Music Hub, AccuWeather)
3 Voice Command Uninstalled using Titanium
It's based on my testing using OS Monitor / ATK - those apps tend to wake up phone for no reason even when you don't use them.
Now it's 24 hours with 4 hours of screen on, no Juice Defender etc.
It works better than SGS (one) despite huge screen and excellent speed.

Well, freezing and ATK are needed to reach 2 separate goals:
1) Freezing: Needed to completely disable apps you plan on NEVER using.
2) ATK: Needed to completely close out apps you DO use when they stay cached/rogue in the background and keep your device awake.
So I do agree with you, freezing is absolutely necessary, but it really is the bare minimum. You still need ATK on top of that to actively seek out and kill battery draining apps.
I can confirm, OP solution works great on me. Thanks..

[Q] help with battery hungry games!?!

I am in need of help in dealing with games that keep eating battery life after the game is closed. I have downloaded different kinds of app killers and i do not see them on the list but under battery options i see every game i have played since i had the tablet on. Is there a better option or am i doomed to turning my nook on/off after every game i play?
I am new to all of this and may be off base here. But in all of my mind melting reading here I picked up Nook Tweaks off the market for free and from what I have read maybe some of those settings might help you.
Check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104039 Maybe this will help. I am still experimenting and learning.

That's a good program for overclocking and boosting audio, sadly not what i need atm
I was having the same problem. I downloaded an app called 1 click cleaner. after its up and running I simply go into the app and click the cache clear button. after that it will pull up any aps or games that I ran. I can click them one at a time and force stop the app first then if i want I can also clean any cache associated with that app. It stops any apps continuing to run and draining my battery?
Some apps shut down properly if you use the back arrow to quit rather than just pressing the home button. Look for a quit button in those games.
I've had Opera stay running in the background if I didn't back out.

I tried this app today and it clears cache but does not bring up anything else even though on the battery use list there are games still running even when i hit the back button to close games. I have had nothing but battery issues ever since i rooted this NC ; / What is even more frustrating is i read on these forums how people are getting 2 days use out of the battery even with moderate use and if i do anything i lose 20-30% of my battery. There must be a way to get this set up right but i feel like only those in the know want to keep their secrets.
From what I've found, the battery usage screen on cm7 is not only applications that are running but also lists apps that have been running but are now closed. If the app doesn't show up in a task killer (I use ES Task Manager) it's not running. Certain games are high demand on the system and will drain the battery more quickly than reading apps (like aldiko) The last tip I have is to turn the screen brightness down. The screen is the biggest battery killer. Also, turn off wifi when you're not using it.
These are what I do and end up getting 2 days of moderate (low gaming high reading) use.

That sounds awfully high. What Rom and version # are you using? Also, what CPU governor and/or overclock settings? It sounds like something is wrong.
That said, I have had "rogue" apps that keeping restarting and usually just end up removing them because they weren't worth the trouble. Personally, I also use GoLauncher and in the applications menu it has a nifty screen to conveniently show the currently-running apps with a button to close them.
I am running cm7.1 and my governor is on conservative. I do not have it overclocked, its at stock 300/800.
Anyone able to help?
