I have MDA compact, and want to know is it possible to use mp3 or any song file as a ringtone.
If so, then how can i do this.

i think it is possible, i tried this in my i mate pda2k try it and tell us the result.
first use rescue registry which usually comes with rescue explorer then open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT THEN MP3 THEN DEFAULT THEN CHANGE MP3FILE IN THE SECOND SQUARE TO BE WMAFILE THEN OK
PUT THE MP3 RING TONE IN FOLDER WINDOWS\RINGS
THEN TRY TO MAKE IT RING TONE

It is very easy and simple.
Copy your mp3 to My Device>Windows>Rings folder
Then go Start>Settings>Phone and select it as a ringtone.

Yes it is! The easiest way to do that is copying the desired mp3 file to the folder \Windows\Rings, than you can choose it as ring tone in the same way as the preinstalled tones (it appears in the same list).
If you like to have the "Set as ring tone" entry in the explorer context menu also for mp3 files (and not only for midi, mp4 and wma) do not the following registry change:

First: if you want to copy and choose the file manually, you don't need to change anything in the registry!
But if you change the linked file type from MP3File to WMAFile, you are telling the system that .mp3 is a wma file (and that is definitely wrong). That works as long as the system has under \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File and \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile equal entries for the used software to handle those files. But it's never a good idea to map different file extensions to the same file type except all these extension are synonyms and belongs to the same type of data (like .htm and .html). As soon as a user installs different players for wma and mp3 he will get into trouble.
So instead of mapping .mp3 to the type WMAFile it will be much better to add the missing context handler entry to the file type MP3File in the registry . (Only the entry is missing, the handler exists, we can use the one which is already used for wma, mp4 and midi, see below)
So lets have a look to \\\registry\HKCR\midifile\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\mp4file\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\wavfile\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile\Shellext and \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext and see:
the first 4 have a key named ContextMenuHandlers and all refer to the same handler, but there is no key named ContextMenuHandlers in \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext. So copy (not move!) \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile\Shellext\ContextMenuHandlers completely (with all subkeys) to \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext and you have will have the "Set as ring tone" entry in the explorer context menu of a .mp3 file too (and not only for .wma, .wav, .mp4 and .mid files). And you preserve the possibility to link different players to .mp3 and to .wma files.
And don't be afraid, the context handler for "Set as ring tone" for wma is the same as for wave, midi and for mp4 so it will work well with mp3 files too because it doesn't care about the file content. It does nothing more than copy the file to the folder \Windows\Rings. (Ok, the message box is telling that the file also has been set as new ring tone, but on my Magician that is not true, it is still the previous tone active and I have to choose it manually)

That also creates the missing key but installs an additional handler and refers to it. I believe that these 100kBytes can be used better for other thing. As long as you are happy whith the way the systems handles .wma files (as ring tones) you can use the same handler for .mp3 files too and there is no need for an special "ring tone" handler for .mp3 files. But if you are afraid of modifying your registry but really want the context entry than this cab file is better than nothing.

there is a program in the settings section system tab called "add ringtone" you can use that or if all else fails you can put your WMA file directly in the directory "My Pocket PC/Windows/" in your XDA.. then try looking at your ringtone list.. it should be there..
Neither work. ;_; The file is currently in windows, & add ringtone does not show it.
some people report that the xda's cant play all bitrate wma's try to see if you can play them on media player

convert your .mp3 or any other audio file using dpoweramp converter its freeware and then copy that .wma to \mypocketpc\windows\rings and paste it there, and then just open sound and notifications on your pda and select incoming call and choose that .wma that you pasted IT SHOULD WORK FOR SURE !!

or if all else fails, instead of converting your mp3's to wma, why don't you just convert it straight to wav format? that way you won't have any problems.. because one problem with the wma format ringtones is if you use it for the sms alert once it rings it wont stop (since it is long) even if you click on everything.. which sucks big time.. while in wav you can easily cut the song to the part you only want with alot of different wav editors..

I have an XDA II and I hv tried this great progrm Ringtone X this is available for download / purchase at www.mtux.com not only u can use wma files but also wav and midi files to set as ring tones. U can also set ring tones by group / individual contact or by phone No. great program. try it.
Success. ^_^ Realised the 'add ringtone' option didn't detect the WMA file, so used a WAV, then found the directory 'Rings' in Windows, & switched it for the WMA again. Found out it doesn't like mp3 files for ringtones, & that any files with foreign characters in their names (eg Japanese, etc) will not transfer.

The easiest way to get them working is to drop a wma into the rings folder, they should appear in the drop down from phone options after doing so (you will have to exit the options page if you had it open whilst transferring the file).
Any good sound editing program (nero wav editor, audacity, av music morpher) should allow you to load your file up, chop and change it and then save out as a wma. Try lowering the quality slightly to bring the file size down even further(wma should be a lot smaller than wav).
As for other sound notifications on the Xda, just drop a wav file into the Windows folder to add it to the appropriate drop down.
well i agree WMA is slightly lighter than WAV.. but if you're not too familiar with audio editing better use WAV and edit it with Audioblock as it has an easy interface or if you are an advanced user and wants to cut WMA better use Adobe Audition or the newer versions..

Not working for me. Installed, no error messages, but I still can't use mp3's as ringtone. Actually in file manager mp3's are not associated with any programs. Could someone give any help?

then do this
Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications>Notifications(on bottom)
Then Event:.. scroll down to Phone: Incoming Call then tap the drop down box by ring tone and it will be there.

So it can't be done without placing the mp3 in the ringtones directory? In deed it's not working for me that way either. I can see the mp3 on the list, but after choosing and pressing an OK, it sets itself back to windows default. Actually I can't use anything else than windows default. I'm really getting mad, plz help! Where is the file associations menu? Maybe there's some problem there. This thing is messed up since I've installed and uninstalled winamp...

It would appear that by default mp3 ringtones are allowed, however once you install a third party app to play mp3's (you mention winamp) you lose the ability to use them(it seems that the Media player engine is used for this).Uninstalling the app makes no difference, you then have no mp3 player because the mobile version of windows does not restore the file association. The best way round this that I have found is to simply use an audio app (Nero wave editor in my case) to convert/edit the mp3s to wma. This has the bonus that most mp3 tracks are too long for a ringtone (how many phones ring for 3-4 minutes without kicking in the answering service ?) so when you convert you can also reduce the length.
I cant comment on the set ringtone cab posted here, never tried it, it may work

I am able to install the cab file without any error message but still can't use mp3's as ringtone. The mp3 file appears in the Sound and Notification drop down list, but whenever I select the mp3 file and try to play, it doesn't play and return back to Windows Default ringtone. Can anyone tell me that what is the problem?

The same problem I have. Also I don't think so that the easiest way to solve it is to convert each of my mp3's to wma or whatever. Somehow there should be a way to restore the file associations. Maybe if someone would have a media player to install (re-install) that could solve it. The problem is that I've also lost my former ringtones.
Have a look at this thread here. Ive just downloaded the files but not tried em yet. Seems to be able to restore file associations so that WMP becomes your default player. This should then allow you to use mp3's as ringtones

So the file associations are normal again, thx to your help. But how can I set an mp3 as ringtone which is stored on the sd card other than copying it to the ringtones folder as it takes far too much space from the main memory? The settings-ringtones does not find the mp3 files either on the sd or in the system memory, only wavs and mids.

That's a pity. Anyway can you suggest any programs then to cut mp3's to smaller pieces? As 4 minutes is far too much thus the size can be shrinked. THX for your kind help.
Try "Sound Forge", But im not sure if it support mp3 files or .waqv only, their you can cut the file to small pieces.

In WM5 you can only use MP3s as ringtones, NOT notification sounds.
You need to convert your sounds to .wav format then put them into the /windows folder on your device in order to allow them to be visible in alarms and sounds¬ifications.
Alternativly update to WM6 and you can use MP3s for all sounds.
I added an mp3 to the windows folder but it doesnt show up in the combo box

/windows = built-in alarm, support wav only

Is there a way in WM6 to use Mp3's off the SD Card with out moving the Mp3's to the windows root? If anyone has found a way please let me know been looking for a while....

What about WMA files as ringtones and notification sounds??? Is it possible to use them with wm6?? If so, where do they need to be put on the device or what reg key needs to be changed to work off the sd card. Thanks!
I've got a new .wav file in \windows and it is showing up in the alarms dropdown but whwn I select it the value will not persist ('flicks' to previous in list). Do the file properties need to be anything in particular and if so how is best to change them. Or is it something else?

Not to clear on what your asking.
Because I don't know what your running on your PDA? (OS, ROM etc.)
A little History is always helpful..
Did it ever work before?
I'll take a stab at it... I'm assuming you have WM6 as the OS and you have a hermes
From what you wrote, you have a new wave file and it shows up in the drop-down list but goes back to the default alarm tones, and that your new wave never engages, not even during the test?(where you selected the alarm tone)
I can suggest a few things:
~Try locating your wave or mp3 clips in: My Device\Application Data\Sounds
(This worked great for me, I was able to use the files here as ring-tones and alarms)
~Check to make sure the file is not protected, read only or hidden
~Try a smaller wave file at a lower bit rate (More or less as a test)
~Try converting the wave file to mp3

Would love to know this myself. Thought I'd been using some off my mSD card before upgd'ing to WM6, but am not able to make it work yet in vp3G's AT&T ROM.

You can use different 3rd party apps, i.e. enAlarm as alarm clock, photcontactspro for ringtones and sms.
BUT:
As the card is not responding that fast as Ram there is a chance for the so called SOD (sleep of dead) if your device is in power save mode. The alarm goes off or the phone is ringing, the application is searching for the sound file, but the card is not ready because of the power save mode. The application is confused - black screen - sleep of dead.
I recommend to save all sound files for ring- alarm- and sms tones in the main memory.
ok i figured out how to make the mp3 into the alarm tones. basically the file size must be around or less than 600 kb, and in wave file. if you have an mp3 convert to .wav, and change the quality. for me, i used PCM 11.025 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono, but its dependant on the size of your song file. you can use your sound recorder to make these adjustments.
Can anyone tell me how i select an .mp3 file converted into an .wav from the list of alarms tone. When i select the tone i want it automaticaly select "default tone"...
Hmm i don't understand. Wav file must be as i remember placed in windows main directory, than it can be select.
Ps. i use Gold wave to change format of mp3 to wav, in exactly same parameters as original alert wav files.
Use a Wave Editor, open the mp3 and save as Wave File with the following parameters:

it all started when I uninstalled Slideview. I also had a problem with .mp3's but managed to fix it after a few registry tweaks & research, then found a fix online, however I still can't set .wma files as ringtones.
I get an error saying (ex. \Windows\Rings\Ring01-WindowsPhone.wma File in invalid format. Continue editing settings?'
In Alarms, I can select the ringtone I want, for example Alarm-02.wma however when I select 'Preview', no sound or vibration.
does anyone have a solution for me??

use file explorer, select and hold on the mp3 file, u will se options such as copy, paste and set as ringtones.
by the way " /my documents/my ringtones " this is the location in the device, not in SD card
or use Vito RingTone Editor that you can download it at http://vitotechnology.com/ringtoneeditor.html

I had the same problem before but I found that it was because off SKTools. I used the Optimise function & cleared everything without checking it. This happened 3 times I updated. So now I uninstalled SKTools..
same as me..help fix this problem...even i cant open the windows media player
why u uninstall sildeview? slideview is amazing from the xperia x2

well I just don't need it as it takes a lot of resources. your tips messed up my notifications, SMS notification doesn't go off when phone is on stand-by.
