Hi
I have read a lot of threads about short battery life, but so far none of those applied to me. I have recently purchased this great device, and normally it gives me 2 days of usage time with a fair amount of fiddling etc, and no activesync. Now the main purpose for this purchase was the Activesync feature, as I have an exchange server pushing me my mail. I have the following settings:
Exchange 2003 SP2 without SSL certs/encriptions
Active sync set to download mails upto 0.5KB and from all times, not only the last 3-5 days, etc.
Active sync is also set for immediate retrieval, which leaves the phone with a permanent GPRS connection. There are PEAK times set, from Monday through Friday between 8AM to 6PM. Off peak times it gets it at every 2nd hour.
My battery lasts 12-14 hours like this, and I dont touch the phone much, plus dont have more than 20 minutes talk time per day. Yesterday I arrived home at 10PM with a dead battery already. This is really bad that I cannot even make it through a single day.
An addition to this the phone gets really warm, but only at the very end of its battery-life, lets say from 30% to 0 it goes in less then an hour or 2, and warms up pretty badly.
I also have the BandSwitch utility keeping my phone on GPRS only, and killing idle connections that are non-used for over 2 minutes. This I guess only takes affect during off-peak hours, but even in those hours, when I check my phone I can see a GPRS connection on for like 20-30 minutes. So I guess Bandswitch doesnt always do a good job.
Any hints? This is really annoying,
Thanks a lot,
Ben
How much backup do you guys are getting from the phone? I have to charge everyday.
And another question- The OS is very unstable, sometimes screen gets freezed. Is their any other Official ROM available for this phone which will not create those bugs?
Thanks in advance.
Umm, a whole day for the phone is pretty good; on 3G I get less.
And I have not a single crash yet, running the stock UK Rom; TouchFlo 3D has crashed on me, but I don't consider that the ROM's fault as I added that...

2-3 days !! oops. then whats wrong with me? i am somehow getting 1-1/2 day maximum. I just installed 2 extra apps, they are -1.Battery status indicator and 2.Xperia Tweak. That's it. What's the prob? Please post some idea..
My battery was better for the first few charges, when I got 2 - 3 days between charges with heavy usage. Now I get down to 40 percent in a day, with moderate usage (3 hours MP3, a few texts and calls, some RSS reading. It's good enough, but I gather some people get more. Perhaps it's the apps in the background.
for me its up too two days with email checked all over the day, some web browsing but little call time
3/4 days (till it comes to the red). Constantly on 3g/h. E-mail, sync, weather update+stock once in a hour/2.
sync and receive mail/contact every5-10 min, or set to "as items arrive"??
apparently its set to send every so often as it searches every so often, I have google as push and doesn't really affect my battery life, but I also have my yahoo mail set to scan every hour, so not really sure lol
I used to have hotmail "as items arrive", but also had weather and facebook updates as regularly as possible. I didn't think it would have any effect. But after months and months of only getting 1 day out of the phone, I set hotmail to every 15 minutes and drastically reduced the frequency of downloads for weather and facebook, and I now get 2-3 days off 1 charge, depending on use of course.
I can't say how much difference that 1 setting alone made, but it must have made a difference.
wow..great battery life. May i ask what ROM you are using?
3 days?? how
i have mail set to every 2 hours. weather is manual. im on elegancia 9 have an updated radio.
i lose almost always 5 pct an hours in standby with minimal usage. if i throw browsing or other things its always 10 pct an hour. never can i not charge it over night

i would like to know as well. which Rom etc...
2 days ok, 3 days is a bit far-fetched.
...unless you turn off your phone most of the day. who knows.

I wonder this question too...I just switched from push to every 10 mins. it seemed to help but wasn't dramatic. I found turning off the data connection helped but I still don't know what that even accomplished.

On my phone, exchange push mail uses less power than checking every 15 minutes...

Mine lasts at least 2 full days with light to moderate use (data always on + check every hour on 2 mailboxes + twitter + weather, some browsing and 15-20 minutes phonecalls, 20-30 minutes using the phone for various things).
If I don't use it much (only phone calls and usual checks every hours, rest of the time on standby), it usually lasts 3 full days (and 2 nights )
I do charge it more often when I can though, since it's better for the battery
I do not think there is a difference with push mail and checking mail every 30 minutes.
I went to bed last evening with a 99% charge and woke up nine hours later with 93%.
I used to have two mail accounts check every 30 minutes, but changed one to push last evening.
I seem to be getting the same result, push or check.
6% loss in nine hours, 1 mail set to push, 1 to 30 minutes check, weather updated hourly (though I think weather does not actually update when phone is sleeping.
Hi guys, I have my omnia 7 for less then a week now and I found it's battery life terrible, the worst performance ever. It drys off in less then a half of day with general use. I fill the battery to 100% over the night and then I wake up in the morning at 5.30am and when I'm back from school sometimes it's allmost empty, sometimes is at about 20% with a usage of About 15 mins of gaming, some browsing/facebook.. few calls and sms and an hour or two of music playback.
I have wifi, bluetooh, push mail, feedback and locations off. Have also been reading on the social.answers microsoft forum about that and there were different tought. I'm wondering how is it with yours.. is it REALLY this bad or it is something wrong with my phone/battery. I don't want to take it back if all are like this as it will be at least one week on service.

mine is on par with any other smartphone ive owned. i can get 24 hours out of it comfortable. thats with about 30 mins calls, 15-20 sms, 30-40 mins gaming, wifi, bluetooth, location & feedback all turned on, windows live & facebook hourly sync & 5 email accounts syncing between every hour & every 2 hours. i have noticed battery life seems to suffer when i use last.fm over HSDPA so maybe its something related to music playback. but even with 3-4 hours of last.fm im still getting 13-14 hours.

mine is running fine.
1. exchange mail
2. google mail
3. facebook sync
4. average 10 minutes surfing
5. 10 minutes game
6. less than 20 sms
7. average 10 minutes voice call
morning 9AM full charged and at least 60% by 8PM
ok thank you guys for reply.. I'm deffinetly taking it back for a replacement on monday.
It could be some app running under the lock screen draining your battery, like a game or Last.fm... other than that, yeah, sounds like a replacement is in order

Nothing running in background. anyway I'll take it back in monday and ask them for a replacement if not, I'll have to wait a week or two to get it back from repair service... trought I hope to get it back till new year.
Maybe consider just buying a new battery?
you should definitely ask for a new battery first, before sending it to service. In the end all is made in China... P.s. My bat. lasts the same as descibed by the others. 1-1,5 day...

giving 390€ with 24 months of contract, using the device for one week and you really think I'm as dumb to buy a new battery as I have 1 year warranty on battery and other accesories ? ... Really ?

Thanks, I'll see what it can be done..
my omnia7 leasts longer than my galaxys with data and email sync .. so no problem
Ok I was at my carrier and they said that the phone needs to be send on service (no replacement options) so I'll probobly send it after new year.
But I notice that when I'm at home (I live about 7-8km out of the city) my battery last muuuuuch longer, actually enugh for what I expect - 2h of music, about 2h web and of market browsing (connected to home wifi + mobile data enabled connected on 3g+ full signal) and when I'm in school (city centre) it drys my batery much faster. Today after 3h with 20min of music and 5 min of web browsing it fell on less than 50% and few hours later on -20% and then it turned off. (same if connected to school wifi or just 3g+ also with full signal)... I really don't get it .
And many of my school mates have the same carrier but don't have any of this problem... might it be somekind of carrier transmitor selectnig bug with windows phone 7 or what ?
Things to note - browsing with WiFi requires less power than browsing over 3G - 3G browsing will suck out your battery a lot faster. (The phone will not use your mobile data connection if you're over WiFi) Also, depending on the lighting conditions, your screen auto brightness will probably also have your screen on a lower brightness setting in your house.
That, and I don't really recommened using your phone as your primary Music/Video palyer if you're serious about battery life - that does a good job of sucking your battery too, and you'll ntoice most of the people getting good battery life aren't really using it as their primary media player.
actually I tested it with using at home with same settings (brightnes to low, wifi/3g off/on) and I can see that when I'm in the city centre it sucks the battery in only few hours with data connection on and not connected to wifi so I assume that my operator wich recently updated it's network did something wrong as my school mates have noticed this too but none of them isn't using a smartphone on this network so it isn't so obvius. I temporary solved the problem with turning off data connection when I'm in the centre and turning it on only when I need it and when I'm out of the centre.
I also noticed my battery life sucked when I had the official twitter application installed on it.
Today I left it charging for 8 hours on my laptop and the battery meter barely moved, I removed Twitter and hey presto it started to charge properly.
Back to Beezz and now all is ok

Apps don't run in the background so it is pretty much impossible for twitter to be draining your battery if it is not open.
Maybe it was just a coincidence but as soon as I removed this app my battery started to charge.
Unless it was a one off issue with charging over usb.
my batterylife is the best ive ever had in a smartphone ... i need a custom rom on my galaxy s with android to get close to the batterylife of my omnia 7 ... i am using hsdpa with the same provider on both phones permantly and im syncing emails with them ... even with gaming (sims 3 or nfs underground) the windows phone least longer.

Not at all. There could me a memory leak in the .NET/silverlight runtime - even Microsoft developers make mistakes
Tbh, I have the Twitter app installed also and my battery life is as good as can be expected with a modern smartphone: 1.5 days heavy use (Music, Twitter, Facebook, web browsing & constant SMS/e-mail)
may I ask somebody for a favor ? Under the diagnosis (call ##634#) type *#2*# (battery diagnosis) and please check what does it say on the third screen at the last line "Result". For me it's "Pass/Fail". Might this "fail" mean it's something wrong with the battery ?
PS. after dialing ##634# a shortcut for diagnosis will show up in the apps menu... just delete it if you don't need it.
And to get to the third screen use the big arrow on the top =)
Hi everyone!
I got my Galaxy 3 about 2 Months ago and I was very curious about it, since it was the first Android Phone I ever got to see.
After a few weeks with Eclair I was VERY disappointed with the poor Battery life. Couldn´t get more than 5-8 hours out of it. 5 hours if played a lot aorund (surfing/messaging/mailing/games) 8 if I barely used it.
I decided to root and soon after that I flashed the Kyrillos 4.0 ROM.
Still, it didnt get much better...
I made the settings as suggested in the Kyrillos thread overclocked the Phone to 1300Mhz. When the screen is off it goes down to 333Mhz.
At least now it runs about 10-12 hours
My Pleasure ended after I installed an IM Client... the Battery died so fast, it had almost no Time to scream ;-)
I tried the following Messengers:
ICQ standard (didn´t even start)
Ebuddy 2.0 (didn´t work too well, had to open it to receive messages and got plenty of double messages)
Trillian
IM+
Ebuddy 2.0.2 (finally seems to work and uses push / right now I stick with it)
The Push feature made it possible to go up to about 11 hours of using time.
Still I am not satisfied... I had high hopes because of the 1500mhA Battery.
Okay it has a quite big screen in comparrison to my old N95 but still...
I thought it had to be the Messenger sucking out the Life of my Batteries, but after today I am not sure.
Today I tried to minimize my usage and turned the phone to GSM only mode, also I did not activate any Messenger.
I wrote exactely 4 Mails, downloaded 1 PDF of about 1,5 MB via WLAN (took 8 Minutes), received 1 SMS and had about 30 Minutes of calls.
The Battery Information says the following:
Remaining Power 20% (Battery Calibratrion 20% 3918mV)
Disconnected from the charger: 12h 44 minutes
Display 68%
Calls 15 %
WLAN 8%
Battery Standby 5%
Phone Standby 3%
Dialing 2%
Of course I had automatic synchonisation for Contacts Mails and Calendar always activated. I cannot live without push Mail anymore
I find it disappointing that even with no 3g and that low usage it doesn´t even live for 24 hours. It isn´t even near the estimated time shown in the many Reviews on the net... over 600hours of standby? I dont think so... even if i wouldnt touch it and turn of everything but the OS. 900 Minutes of talk time? Not in this reality...
How do they even come up with such numbers?
Did I make a mistake? Is the autmoatic sync really using that much Battery?
Is it because of the overclocking? Maybe I should use another Push Service than that of google...
Is there any way to log the amount of connections needed to hold up the push feature? It must be some kind of VPN with the Mailserver, since the Phone is running in an IPv4 NAT Space and has no Unique Adress to be adressed.
It isnt that bad for me to have only a few hours of running time, because I have bought some batteries in reserve. But it bothers me. I think it can be optimized.
If you are reading this: Thank you for your patience ;-)
May the Force be with you.
Merlett
If you restart your phone when you have 20% on 3.950mV, you will see again 70%. Phone is holding untill 3.550mV. I don't really understand the calculation method but it's really inacurate.
