Is it possible to enable the keyboard light via the backlight button? I believe this would be a very useful function since the keyboard light only comes on when it is very dark and not under poor light conditions.
Probably you will just need to find the registry key that controls the backlight button and then associate the relevant keyboard light trigger to the registry key. :shock:

Go to Start>Settings>Button>Backlight and Disable auto sensor. This would enable the keyboard to light up as soon as you press any key for 10 seconds. If you want the keyboard light to light up more than 10 seconds, follow this instructions from the WiKi pages:
How long will Universal keyboard shine? 10 seconds is a few, change the value of this key and it will shine so long as you wish!

OK - I think I need to clarify this. What I would like to do is to be able to turn ON the "keyboard lights" using the "backlight button". I know how to program the backlight button and extend the "light on" time for the keyboard (thanks to previous posts). Being able to turn on the keyboard light by pressing a button (regardless of what the sensor thinks, and not having it come on when I don't need it) would, I think, be an advantage.
Further.....
I do not want the keyboard light to come on everytime I press the key, for instance in bright daylight. The sensor turns the light on in almost pitch black, so that's ok. In poor light conditions the sensor does not turn the light on and it's difficult to see (at least for me), the small keyboard Fn icons. Hence the reason for having some other means of control.
What in fact I need, if anybody knows, is how to trigger the keyboard lights (apart from hitting the keyboard).
I haven't tried any of this, so this is all just speculation, but here is a thought...
I believe that there are programs out there that will simulate a keystroke. Assuming you can find one, and assuming that a simulated keystroke will turn on the backlight, then you may be able to assign the keystroke program to the backlight button. You'd have to pick a harmless keystroke, like the shift key, and it's not pretty, but it may work.

Did you check the keyboard settings ?
(in Settings/Personal/Buttons see the last tab called Backlight)
Is it dark when you try and use it? the light won't come on unless the ambient light level is low!

Yes I did in both positions, auto and disable auto.
It pisses me off.... the JJ is brand new out of the box, I kindda hoped I'm stupid and I just don't know how to handle it...:-(

Yes tried it even in complete darknes, but if you disable the Auto KB backlight sensor, there is suppossed to be a KB BL manual button (user manual pg 10, button # 5). Tried both sits. Nada.

Hi guys, faulse alarm, I'm standing in the corner.... It does work but in its own logic, ...only when you actually press a key. I've expected that it should be on/off once the sensor dictates it's dark. Probably my own logic is faulty as I guess it could suck up the battery juice.. anyway, all's OK, thx .

What I did is the following: I unchecked the "Enable Keyboard ..." and put the time to 10 sec for "Turn off if not used...".
So each time I press a key on the keyboard, it illuminates: I found this useful even in full day time in order to see clearly the signs in red. On another hand I did not notice really a significant difference in battery life.

What would be preferable to losing the cool auto-sensor altogether is a reg hack to adjust the amount of darkness that triggers the sensor. It's set waaaaay too dark at the moment, and needs to come on in less dark surroundings. Any ideas?

If the screen backlight times out, pressing that button turns the backlight back on again. This avoids you having to tap the screen or press a key thus accidentally selecting something you didn't wanna do!
OH! thanks for the info on the button, But i have my screen and backligh both set for 5 mins so asume this buton would be needed if you set the screen to turn off after say 5 mins but the backlight to go off after 30 seconds?

Hi. Would be very grateful for any help.
I have the following issues:
1) External buttons don't work in clamshell mode (except answer call button). At the very least I'd like to use the volume control.
2) Keyboard backlight never comes on (have tried the button on front and with backlight sensor enabled and disabled in settings).
I was wondering if this is anything to do with the corporate install, as I'm almost positive that before I hard-reset and went into corporate, the volume control at least worked in clamshell mode.

Keyboard backlight will only get on in very dark environment. Universal has a light sensor.
I know: backlight doesn't come on even with my thumb over it.
On the other issue, though, does anyone know if the outer buttons and the volume slider _should_ work with the lid closed?
I too thought the backlight was broken, but it has to be REALLY dark, and your thumb has to seal every area of it. Alternatively find and change the setting to disable the backlight sensor, then it comes on every time you press a key!
I remembered reading some posts concerning using the backlight button on the Universal to turn on the keyboard light but I can't seem to find it anymore.
Can somebody point me in the right direction to map the backlight button on the Universal to turn on the keyboard light?

I think that was the advice in another similar thread.
There is a registry hack to make it stay on longer than the 10 seconds that is selectable from the control panel, mine is set to 30 seconds.
Is there a way to keep the light of the keyboard a bit longer?

:shock: I don't know if you mean the red on the flag, the red of vodafone logo or the red of the keyboard... but I will change all of them if you find the answer! :lol:
I changed it to 65535 and the registry editor seemed to accept it, I make that about 18 hours before it times out, nice thing is it still goes out and stays out if you power down, but it goes out and comes back on if you close.

I've written an app to give independant control of the keyboard lights (and red/green keys), manual on, manual off.
However, gooroo's solution sounds like a better workaround.

Still looking for a solution for this one too.
I don't think I can use the change timeout to 65000, because my device doesn't autoswitchoff (disabled that) because the BT keeps f*cking up.
So after 30 sec my backlight just turns off, the device keeps on. Setting the keyboard timeout to 65000 would kill my battery cause it will always be on.
Viper, so what do you propose? You don't want to extend timeout?

I've always had set it to 30/60 seconds.
I think the problem is that wm5 doesn't support keyboard backlight like the normal backlight (which has settings for battery/AC)
just trying 65000sec and see if that works a bit. But I have to see if it doesn't drain the battery and all.

Ok this option works perfect for me.
And yes changing the value to 65000 will let your keyboard light be on permanently (practicaly then)
But your keyboard light auto-switches off when your Backlight does.
So in the car it's on power, so this will keep the backlight on full brightness + always keyboard lights
on battery the backlight goes out after 30 sec and so will the keyboard. But when i touch the screen both will jump on.

Does anyone know how to enable the keyboard backlight so that it comes on when the keyboard is slid open and stays on as long as it is open?
I've tried disabling/enabling the daylight sensor but no matter what I do the keyboard light doesn't come on until I press a key.

I think that it is linked to the general backlight settings ie if you set your screen backlight not to go off after a certain time, then neither will your keyboard.
Also, I think that there is a way to alter the timeout for the keyboard by altering the registry keyboard timeout.
However, I don't know how to do this myself, I expect someone on this board will know. I'm pretty sure that someone described this in the Wizard or Universal part of these forums, that might give you a clue.

Yep, I have mine on all the time - just 'cos I like that pretty blue glow!!
My settings are:
Start>Settings>Buttons Icon>Backlight Tab
Uncheck Backlight sensor
PLUS
Start>Settings>System>Backlight
Here on the Battery Power and External Power Tabs I have both Unchecked.
Under Start>Settings>System>Power
I still have turn of power after 5 minutes if device not used.
