T-Mobile Online replacement phones - refurbs or new ones? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

After keeping me waiting for 7-8 weeks, they are going to send out a replacement unit. I discovered a fault a week after getting it and the buggers have kept me hangin on.
Anyone had one from them? Am I goint to get stitched up with a second hand item or will they play the game and give me a new one?

gutted, scratched a faulty hd2 that i planned to send back,

Has anybody had experience removing a screen scratch from their hd2?
i've only had mine for 5 days and its got a massive scratch on the screen, don't even know how it happened, i always keep my phones in a glasses baggy, my iphone is still mint after 18 months but today i was watching some youtube clips on my break and the screen was perfect, then put it on charge at work and when i came back to it it was really badly scratched, not sure if someone decided to have a look at it and dropped it while i wasn't there but needless to say i'm gutted, i was thinking of sending it back to o2 coz it has a few problems, random letters on typing and stuck messages, not sure if they'll accept it back even as faulty with this big scratch, any advice as to what o2 do with faulty phones? do they check them, bin them or fix them? it was bought over the phone btw, will they just write it off and send a new one because of the problems?
please help
I think you will struggle to get it replaced under warranty with a fat scratch, even if it didn't work at all, let alone a few issues that are (apparently) solved by updates.
Do you have any cctv at work? I'd be spitting mad and hunting for the culprit!
there is cctv but not in my department, and lots of people come in and out,
worst case scenario if o2 won't accept it back as faulty they'll just send it back as it is,
and if i'm lucky i'll get a replacement?
just been giving the screen a rub with some t cut and it seems to be helping with most of the scratch, there is just a 5 mm part that is deeper than the rest, do you think that would affect an exchange?
Maybe, you`ve got nothing to lose.....
Gotta be worth a try. Chances are they're only going to flash a new rom and ship it back anyway. Course, if you have insurance it COULD go missing....
insurance is what my work mate said, any recomendations for someone cheap but with full cover?
Just for the record, the random letters on typing and stuck messages thing probably won't be enough to get you a new device. These flaws are all over the place. HTC will tell you the 1.66 rom will solve those problems. And the 'not quite aligned screen' is also a thing that pops up here on a regular basis.
Hope you succeed.
Hello guys, sorry for hijacking this thread, but I have a very similar problem except without the scratched screen. The details are over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627374
Basically, I sent it to HTC and it came back much worse than it was when I sent it to them. What can I do now? Send it back to HTC again or would O2 be better? Is there a way I can get a new phone?
Thx.
If you return it to O2, they'll courier out a new one and pick the "faulty" one up at the same time, so you would get a new phone straight away - they did this with my first HD2 which didn't recognise SIM cards.
What they do with the "faulty" one once it's couriered back is anyone's guess. You could be lucky and it just goes in a big faulty pile to be sent back to HTC. I would deny that it was scratched if they phone you up about it, but that's quite naughty.
Awesome, thanks elyl .
My phone isn't scratched in the first place. Hope it works out for the original poster too.

what department at o2 did you use to get a courier exchange , what did you ask for and what problem did your phone have so that they exchanged it, cheers
sometimes the couriers themselves check out the goods if you are returning faulty handsets that have supposedly have no physical damage. ive had this happen to me a few times with my business units.
i would send it back to O2 anyway... if you have only had the handset for five days, explain that the screen is not "perfect". Its all about how you word it on the return form. Put down your other issues also.
This way when the courier turns up with your new handset and checks the goods and the return form (IF he has one) he will have no choice but to oblige.

Before I divulge this story I don't endorse this sort of thing.
My mate got the HD2 on an upgrade through O2, he sat on it within 24hrs and got a smudge on the screen, called them up and claimed there was a fault with the screen; which they then sent a brand new replacement. This promptly arrived and then by shear idiocy he managed to put it the through the washing machine the next day!
The device turns on but the back light has shorted, so you can see the GUI but only under strong light and it is basically unreadable. He will get insurance via O2 then claim next month saying he lost it. However the insurance does cost 10 pound a month; but still cheaper than 500...

Am I the only one who finds the people who break their phones and then try to weasel their way into a new, free handset annoying as hell?
My local HTC center used to offer courier exhanges for all HTC products, but not anymore. I called 'em up the other day to get my phone exchanged and they told me they no longer do it because people were abusing the service.

no... you are not the only one who finds unscrupulous antics extremely irritating.
however,... some of the stories i hear are so ridiculous that all you can do is laugh.
the irony of it is, that when i ordered the phone it went through ok and the money came off my card, then i got a text a few hours after the order, saying they were out of stock, i rang a few days later to see when they expected fresh stock and the girl i spoke to re ordered it for me, 2 days later 2 phones arrived at my house delivered as one shipment, i could have sold one phone but being honest i rang o2 and explained they'd made a mistake, i sent one phone back the next morning,
my phone also has the landscape/portrait problems in internet explorer and calender apps, where if i open in portrait and switch to landscape the screen flicks back and forth fast until i pull the battery, i planned to send it for an exchange anyway as my mate who has one at work has none of my phones problems, its just my luck it got scratched

Replacement phone...updated Part Number?

I just got a replacement G2 from UPS this morning. Hopefully to address my random reboot issue and random signal flakiness. Really I just wanted to see if the new unit had a different part number (as in newer hardware revision). I hadn't seen any posts with part numbers listed from their phones. The part number is located under the battery, btw.
The old phone (recieved Sept 29th - pre order):
P/N: 99HLW021-00 XE
S/N: HT09NR21XXXX
The new phone (got it this morning Oct 28th):
P/N: 99HLW021-01 A
S/N: HT0A4R21XXXX
Maybe that last "01" is a revision number?? It looks to me the replacement I recieved is BRAND NEW, not a refurb. At least it appears that way. I think it would be pretty hard to reinstall those plastic pieces between the screen and keyboard, on the keyboard itself, and on the screen that come when it ships new. Of course they stripped it of the battery and back cover.
My old hinge was very tight, and this was also appears to be tight. Although it may have a little less wobble to it. I need to reload all my stuff and give it a test run.
I'll report back on any differences I note.
I see you're in the same area as me, I was wondering what kind of speeds have you gotten around both St.Pete and Tampa. I can't seem to get anything better than 4 mbps at most for download.

I'm getting around 3-4Mbps d/l most of the time. I've seen as high as 9Mbps near my job, though. Icot area off of Ulmerton.
Make sure you check your part number when you get a chance and vote in the poll at the top. I'm curious about this part number revision thing.
99HLW021-00 from pre-order. Thinking about getting it switched out if there is a new revision out. My hinge is very loose but no reboot issues.

I haven't even powered up my new one yet. I just put on my screen protector and I'm letting it dry thoroughly before powering it back up. I'll probably wait to mess with it tonight when I'm at work.
I actually have 2 -00's so if anyone wants to change the poll? My wife's was received 2 days ago brand new in box from Asurion. Both have tight and identical hinges and no issues. Mine is 2 weeks old.
just received my replacement order yesterday from preorder and they both have P/N: 99HLW021-00 XE.
but this hinge seems to be tighter than the first one. but i am sure it will get loose over time. It seems i get worst signal than the first one. still no 3G in my house with G2. I get it all day with my Blackberry 9700...*sigh may have to sell the G2 and get the new 9780
Anyone getting the replacements getting a brand new in box phone? Cause I am going to demand that I think when I call about my phone...
yes mine was brand new sealed up. Came out of Colorado warehouse. I live in MA. I was still within my buyers remorse period.
if you go it from a store just go back to them and get a exchange

I got mine from the T-mobile store yesterday. I am taking it back today. Floppy hinge, won't even connect to edge where I used to get 3G with my G1. I really like the phone but until a radio update and new hinge I will go back to my G1. Or wait till next week and try the my touch.
i picked mine up a week ago in fort lauderdale, part# 99hlw021-00 xf
I also received a replacement today with P/N: 99HLW021-01 A. It was a brand new phone. Maybe it is a new batch because I ordered a replacement last thursday and it took a week to get here, normally it only takes 2 days. I am located in NYC. I noticed that the new phone has a different color in the back. My original has like a brownish color and the new one is grey. Also the Hinge feels sturdier when is closed and when is open as well. I will take a picture of the both phones so you guys can see what i am talking about the colors

Refurbished Rant

Has anyone had any problems with their refurbished EVOs? So far I've had 4 in the last week and a half, and I have to go back again tomorrow for what I'm going to assume will be my 5th. The power button on my EVO broke, they sent me a refurb. That one had a broken charging port when I got it, another refurb. That one did nothing but a constant boot loop, another refurb. This one came to me with a blown earpiece speaker and an overheating problem that causes the phone to reboot.
I'm sick of spending my family dinner time every day at the Sprint store. Can I be the only one who is having these problems? It seems to me that whoever refurbishes these phones for Sprint has absolutely no quality control department whatsoever. Another (what I consider to be huge) problem is that at one point I was waiting 3 days because the refurb EVOs were on back-order. During that time I had to steal the extra phone on my account back from my mom.
I guess I really can't do much about any of this, but I did write a letter in the hopes that someone will give a damn about just how horrible these refurbished phones are when they reach the consumer. I don't have high hopes though.
It reminds me of the time I drove from Sprint store to Sprint store trying to find a replacement Treo years ago. I hit 5 different stores before I finally got one that wasn't a damaged refurb.
That's the end of my rant. If you're bored enough to have read this far... well, that sucks.
I had my launch day Evo replaced due to the broken power button issue with a refurbished unit. It has worked flawlessly since I got it about 3 weeks ago. It is hardware version 0004.
I had a similar problem to yours. The 3g radio went out on my 31 day old evo, back when i got mine on launch day. Even though I was 1 day over the 30 day exchange policy, they refused to give me a new one. I went through 6 refurbs before they finally decided to give me a new one. Each one was ridiculously bad. One wouldn't turn on. One had a bad charging and hdmi port. One had a whole section of the screen that didn't work. And the worst one, when I got it out of the box, the screen was literally in two pieces. The entire glass part was not glued to the actual phone. I immediately took it back to the store that ordered it for me, and they refused to replace it, saying that I was the one who broke it, even though I didn't even activate it yet. I had to fight with Account Services and customer support for over 2 weeks to get them to finally get me a new one. Everyone I talked to ASSURED me their refurbs were "completely normal" and "rebuilt to factory specs". I didn't know factory specs included the phone coming in two pieces.
On a side note, my girlfriend went through the same thing with Verizon with her old phone last year. It was a touch screen phone, she went through 5 refurbs until they decided to get here a new one. Same thing, every one was so bad. Three of them, the touch screen didnt work at all. One the vibrate didn't work. One would not connect to the internet. And they said the same thing, "all our refurbs are completely tested to work just like a new unit". Yeah right.
That is pretty interesting, pretty crappy of Sprint to do that to you.
However, from my experiences they have some sort of a 3 refurb rule, or it may be 4 and then they are supposed to give you a new phone. I am not sure that this is still a policy but I know I have fallen back on it a few times. Do some digging and see if you can confirm that it still is or bring it up to them at the store. If they **** you around call retention and let them know your fed up and I am more than positive they will take care of you.
Went through 2 myself in the past two weeks and when the third one came in the same way, the rep game me a NIB 004. Guess it all depends on who you speak with and how their day is going! The issue on all of these was the 'sunspot', as I call it. Had my first evo screen replaced 4 months in last year for the same thing. Good Luck!
i just got a refurb last week. i waited over a week cause they were on back order. first thing i did was root it and load cm7 on it. no problems so far.
when i had to get a refurbed moment last year it was a different story though.
My update... Sprint replaced the blown speaker. Had to go back again today because the phone kept overheating and rebooting. A nice technician named Sandi gave me a new EVO. It came with gingerbread, so no root for me. But I am so glad to be through with the broken refurbs. If I had gotten one more broken phone I think I would have had to ditch Sprint. I'm honestly very relieved.

Anyone having any problem getting refurb replacements? Backordered wise?
Seems to me like you would have saved yourself a lot of headaches if you just checked the phone before you left the store. Everytime I get a phone from Sprint, I go sit in my car for a few minutes and make sure everything is working. It's better than driving all the way home and realizing my phone is broken later. Plus if you come back in right after they give you the phone, and show them the problem, they wont be able to say that it's something you did.

Google RMA process getting slower?

Hate to admit it, but this is my third RMA. I did a couple back in July and still had issues. So decided to wait a month or more and try one more RMA.
My first two RMAs with Google were pretty quick. I called them, got the link request the replacement. It took them about one business day to ship it and they'd send it 2 day delivery. So the entire process from the time I called to receiving the replacement was just 3 days on both of those RMAs. And that was when Google was up to their elbows in new orders and replacements.
I would have thought almost 2 months later things would settle down. But I started an RMA on Tuesday and it's Friday and they haven't even shipped it yet.
Anyone else do any RMAs this week?

The whole process has gone to s#! *, my first rma at the beginning of august I got labels, rma form, and replacement shipped the same day. 2nd rma I called Google and they told me a rep would call me back to take my info down. Never got the call and had to call them back. A whole lot of phone and email tag trying to get all my forms and labels just to get a replacement
Sent from my Black "Destroy Mode" Nexus 7
Oh yeah. I just realized I haven't even gotten the email with the return labels. That usually comes at the same time as the email for the replacement order.
Guess I'll have to call Google and find out what happened to the RMA.
Call once more, if nothing happens then file a complaint with the BBB.

I didn't call, figure since is Friday I'll just wait to next Monday to find out what is happening. Perhaps they are waiting on the next C9O batch from ASUS.
I called Google and it turns out their system went down and existing replacements got stuck in the queue. He said he'll need to escalate my issue to get my replacement unstuck from the queue.

Geez, not good to hear this has at least been going on since August 31st and still isn't fixed. Google had no problem putting a hold on my credit card though.
They told me to call again if I don't hear anything by Thursday.
I just called and they said it's stuck in a pending state as well. Guy said he would email my case specialist and I should get an email back.
Hmm...that sucks. I have been contemplating RMAing my N7 lately. I've always had very slight screen lift, but it never really bothered me. I removed 2 screws under the area where the lift was, and later removed the sponge strip. That fixed it 90% of the way. But the last few weeks I get the unresponsive touch screen, and have to turn the screen off, then back on. That fixes it completely, until it happens again. I've flashed a few ROMs and kernels, and it's a lot better now, but still happens daily.
If/when I hear that new units aren't plagued with defects, I may RMA.
So if I ordered from the Play Store and request an RMA, they'll send me a new one first, place a $199+tax hold on my CC, and wait for me to return mine, correct?
What if I get the new one and it's worse, and I want to return IT? Does that create a bigger problem?
Thanks, and keep us up to date on your situation please
Edit: Is it possible to RMA an 8GB model, and request the new one be a 16GB, and pay the difference?

The hold they put on your credit card is only the cost of the device, no sales tax. So for the 8GB model it would only be $199 total. They hold with my bank usually goes away in less than 2 days.
Google rep told me that if the replacement also has issues they still wanted me to return the original and then do another RMA on the replacement.
You have 3 weeks to return the device and normally the RMA process is pretty quick. So you could still hold on to the original while doing another RMA on the second, so long as you get that original back within the 3 week window.
For the last item, you can ask, but doubtful.

Cool, thanks for the info man!
So what you said..."Google rep told me that if the replacement also has issues they still wanted me to return the original and then do
another RMA on the replacement."
If I got a replacement that was worse(dead pixels, blown speaker) than my original (screen lift) I would have to keep the crappier one and give them my original N7 per the RMA...then start an RMA on the crappy replacement that I now am stuck with for an unspecified amount of days? That would suck. I've heard many stories of the replacement having more/worse defects than the original. Well, when or if the N7 starts to ship mainly defect free, I might RMA. Until then, I just have a really bad feeling that I have over a 50% chance my replacement will have more/worse defects. I guess I'll just keep mine, while keeping a lookout for better quality batches in the future. Thanks again man, good luck on the new Nexus.

So off to send original one back and do this process all over again
I got my replacement yesterday too. It's a C8O and sadly it's got the screen lift on the left side, quite noticeable lift.
This is my third and last RMA. Sadly I'm just gonna have to accept it and live with it. I'm still happy with it for $250, just physical flaws bother me a bit. Oh well.

[Q] How has Samsung handled your RMA request?

Has anyone bought a Nexus 10 from a place other than the Play store and had to RMA their device? I am curious as how Samsung's service is in terms of getting a replacement unit out to you. Getting a replacement unit from Google is pretty simple but is it as easy to get one from Samsung? Do they attempt to fix the device (for example, if you had light bleeding) or do they send you out a new unit?
Bad service.

I bought mine from walmart and thought my battery was bad. I called samsung and it was painful to say the least. They transferred me 5 times. Once they sent me to google cause they said they didn't handle nexus products. Google sent me back to them I picked the wifi only option and they told me again it was a google product I told him I just got transferred back by google. He sent me to the manager who again tried to tell me they didn't deal with nexus products. So I told them my problem and told them I felt the battery was bad. He finally just said okay I'll put in a ticket for you to send it to Texas (I believe he said, wasn't really listening as I felt I should have just got a new one). He said the process would take somewhere from 2-3 weeks. I said forget I'll just deal with the bad battery until I can buy one and replace it myself.
The shipping process with Samsung is much the same except that it takes multiple transfers on the phone to find someone that has a screen that can do an RMA ticket on the device. My problem is that in doing the work they don't really make sure they solved the problem you had. I had my screen replaced and they put a worse screen in with four corners of large light bleed and they even managed to scratch up the back of my device. I was upset to say the least and had to ship it back for them to fix their shoddy workmanship. On top of that... I sent mine back on the 16th and it didn't get opened until 2 days after arrival. As of a week ago it has been sitting on hold waiting for parts. So its been in Samsung's hands now for 2 weeks and no word on when they will get whatever parts they need in stock or ship it back. When you ship they pre pay a 2 day air ups label and send it back 2 day air as well. Hope to get it back reasonably soon as the device has been out of use now for over a month. First trip took about two weeks total. Second trip who knows.
BTW, I did buy mine from play but was tired of worse RMA replacements. Everything was perfect on mine other than a little dimming along the camera edge of the screen and a dead pixel.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
