Skype announces version 2.0 with video calling - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

http://www.skype.com/company/news/2005/skype_2.0beta.html
Now, if you're reading this, you're probably thinking the same thing I am...
"Will there be a Pocket PC version and will it work with my front-facing camera? I've got an HTC Universal and I could use a feature like this on my device over Wi-Fi (and/or UMTS if you're not in the US)!"
Well, before you get excited, there is only a Windows desktop version of 2.0 beta available, but that doesn't mean we can't ask!
http://support.skype.com/?_a=tickets&_m=submit
Please send a support request ticket to the "Suggestions" department and ask them for this capability!
You can use the following message and adjust it to your liking:
I am excited about the new video calling capability with Skype 2.0 and am hoping that this functionality will be available in videoconferencing-capable Pocket PC devices such as the very popular HTC Universal, the already available Samsung i700 and Hitachi G1000, all other compatible Pocket PCs with front-facing cameras or camera add-ons on CompactFlash/SecureDigital card, the much anticipated HTC Hermes, and many more devices.
I would like to be a part of any alpha/beta software testing of any upcoming Skype versions for the Pocket PC, especially if you are implementing video calling capabilities. I have a [insert device here] and have high-speed internet access to Skype via [method: EV-DO, 1xRTT, Wi-Fi, EDGE, UMTS, etc.].
I thank you for your time and effort, and I look forward to your prompt response.

Video Cam Link - is it possible?

Hi All
Having lurked for a while have now joined - what a fantastic forum
Anyway my question is as follows:
I have a laptop with video cam and my XDA Exec with video cam - is there any software for both laptop and PDA that will allow me to link the two together - essentially I would like to be able to use my PDA while away with work to speak to and see my son at home via the laptop
Not sure he will like the idea but as a home sick Mum it would be great
Thanks for the help
Jean
It should be possible as Microsoft standardized the camera's API drivers with WM2005 to enable 3rd party to write the software you looking for! However ive let to find any such software yet, but its early days yet
Has anyone heard anything about Agile Messenger or msn messenger coming out with on-board camera support?
A.
Would be cool 8)

Camera Chat For Free! (we all want it)

i was ondering if there were any software that would allow 2exec' to estabilish a video chat session over wifi rather than paying for the 3G rates... also if there were a way to do the same with regular pc users too
thanks for any information
Not as yet even though the camera does have the facility to be integrated into applications, unfortunately no-one has yet!
Video calling is good though!
I sent an email to the MS Portrait team and they told me that this may be included in a future version if they can get the camera API.
I think it would be a killer app that will separate the Jasjar from all the others.

You are wrong. With PocketCaster www.comvu.com you can stream videos from both cameras via GPRS, UMTS, WiFi up to Comvu-Server.

Thanx, man! Bravo for the info!
That's amazing! I just downloaded and played a bit but I couldn't really play that much seeing as O2 only give me 1MB a month!! booooo
Dubrand,
Thanks for the info. However since I haven't yet seen this tool you are referring to, is this tool solely a video blog? In other words, from what you are saying, it cannot be used to do an interactive chat between two people on the fly (like in MSN Messenger on the PC) but only to save and upload a video clip on a server no?
Tks.
Thanks Dubrand! Looks like a fun little app/service. 8)
Thanks a lot!
It cannot be used to do an interactive chat between two people on the fly (YET). But i think this is a terrific proof of the concept that the build in camera can be used in (interactive) applications from third parties. An exciting promise for future use of the HTC Universal.
thanks for the info. i think this is a must have and when it is fully integrated into say msn messenger this will be my far the best device / gadget for years
3g video web conferencing
Any developers who fancy having a bash at developing such a website feel free to contact me. www.meetnow.co.uk...I have the ideas, web address (not live yet)...but lacking the technical know how..

Messenger app which does video??

So I have my lovely Tytn with it's front facing camera, and a microphone on the bottom... bit like a PC with a webcam and a mike. When I use my PC, I can have instant messenger chats with my friends using audio and video. Is there an app for WM5 which does this- typing is all very well and good, but when the hardware for sound and video is there, seems a shame not to use it.
Any ideas, anyone?
Oh yeah, and I have thought about the perenial (a) it takes too much bandwidth or (b) just get a video call enabled SIM. Bandwidth-wise, I used to conference call with video from my PC using a 56k modem, and as for (b), well I want to call people running MSN messenger on PCs, 'cos no one I know actually uses a 3G phone with video capabilities (apart from me!!).
Thanks all!
Cool Camera again...
Did you Try Cool Camera? Windows Live Messenger Mobile don't support the c front cam.
THE FIRST OFFICIAL APPLICATION THAT WILL SUPPORT THE FRONT CAMERA WILL BE SKYPE 2.5 FOR WINDOWS MOBILE AKU 3.5
Thanks! I'll give Cool Camera a go... hopefully it'll do what I want it to; I assume I won't be able to have a "full" video call (eg see the other person)?

MSN messenger app with frontcam as webcam ?

Dear all,
I have been wondering if there is an application with messenger, which would have hermes frontcam as a webcam. After a long search I did not manage to find any apps like this. (with this i mean an app, which is running on the WM, NOT on PC).
However I came across one opinion about the thing that it could NOT be possible, since the heavy need of processing of the cam. I started thinking is that right, how much processing speed does it need to run a webcam with like only few pictures per second and a basic chat app running on msn messenger standard.
In my unprofessional opinion that should be possible, and if it is, why isnt anyone else interested in this kind of a thing, and why its not available.
Please somebody, do that kind of an application so I wouldnt have to learn WM PPC programming just because to do that.
or alternatively, prove me wrong.
/Henry
It is defenately possible. I use Web Camera plus and you phone will act as a perfect webcam. You can even choose if you want the front cam or normal cam.

Thanks for the cool info!
Unfortunately that is working as a webcam for a messenger running on a PC only.. Not for messenger application running on my Hermes itself.
Is this impossible, is this going to be my Alamo?
/Henry
Ow, that i do not know. I'm not aware of an app that can do that, allthough i think it should be possible.
Maybe someone else can help you.
Im going to have to say that i doubt such a program exists or will exist.
MSN uses a lot of processing power to convert raw video into a streamed format.
Just because it is possible to do 3G video calls doesnt mean that MSN will use the same compression method.
What they'd first need to develop is voice calls through MSN. Not just voice clips.
hey, check out microsoft portrait, it has an app for both PC and PPC it is actually a development for voice/cam chat for portable devices, work on my wizard, however I don't have a hermes, so you will just need to try it and see, post back the results.

on my wizard it does have a drop down for the different cameras it detects, however the wizard only has one camera, so i believe it may bring up both cameras on the hermes

Cool stuff! Will try it out as soon as I get a internet connection.. Just now Im located in Netherlands (against my will ) without internet subscription and with horrible dutch 3g data transfer pricing.
Reporting back from Finland! The land of the thousands lakes and stuff..
---
sry for that.. just noticed that the file is actually under 1 meg.. so even I can afford that with stupid dutch pricing..
I tried to install it but i couldn't
I've got the last windows installer but the msi gives me a error message every time (i'm running a windows xp professional sp2)

I will try that out later tonight. Which version of WM are you running? 5 or 6? and which version of the phone you have? ..or maybe you ment that its not installing on your computer..
I mean that is not installing on my computer, if I transfer the file to my hermes, it doesn't work either.
Does it work for you ?
I'm on WM6 (Schaps version 3.54c)

Webcam on the HD

Would it be possible to use either the front facing or rear camera as a webcam in a program such as live messenger or skype on the touch hd?

Yes, check out

and

You could search the forum too...
While it is interesting to be able to use the HD as a webcam on the PC. It would be more interesting to be able to use Skype webcam directly from the HD (in house).
This one claims to do video calls via IP directly from VideoPhones without going through your provider. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it supports Skype. http://www.octro.com/

Forget it! Part of the first is the well known "Cool Camera" prog 1.15. And Cool Camera doesn't work on the HD.
Also your second advice isn't running on the HD.

I think that's what the topic user is aiming at, using the front camera as a webcam in programs on the HD itself.
Would be kinda cool .
yeah sorry maybe i didn't make my question clear... I was wondering if you could have the camera working as a webcam purely on the phone. Videocalling over IP or sending video through windows live messenger for mobile.
did a search on the forums but nothing came up. i'm surprised and can't see why it's not been done. it's possible on desktop pcs so why not mobile devices?
is it too much data to send? i would have thought HSDPA would be fast enough.

Standard 3G can manage video phonecalls, which are essentially identical to net video calls. Maybe internet calls have a little extra overhead and need slightly more cunning programming to overcome the lack of a dedicated network, but otherwise it's the same thing.
As far as I understand HTC's strategy is one of supporting and working with the carriers. As the carriers want us (in Europe at least) to make high-priced, and therefore high margin, video calls via our cam equipped devices, HTC disabled the front cam for any internet chatting, or voip calls.

You asked for the software that provides a webcam interface to PC, not whether it's compatible with Touch HD. You can test yourself if you want.
