Hi,
In my house I have a wired broadband connection. Is it possible to connect my Exec to this machine using the USB then connect my laptop to the Exec using Bluetooth Dial Up Networking to give my laptop a network connection?
I have played around and it looks possible - has anyone managed it?
Has nobody tried this at all?
the exec came with special USB s/ware drivers for your computer, that alloow it to be used as a USB Wifi/ 3g 2g Dialup modem !!!!
Get a wireless router
I log on to an in house wireless network using my Exec and everything works just fine...

Have logged on to an inhouse wireless network without even realising it!
Not my network though! Someone near me is a bit lax on security

ok here's the problem
you want to connect to a wired network or even simply a single pc connecting to the net on a broadband or dialup connection.
if there was a wireless router then it wouldnt be a problem. your pda would connect to the wireless network and the wireless router would give your pda an address and everything would work.
without the wireless router you don't get allocated an ip address.
well problem solved www.nat32.com has a program called nat32e which you can get a demo version of (works for an hour before needing to be restarted)
essentially this is a nat router which runs on any pc running windows
you need a wireless card in addition to its ethernet connection to the net.
I did this with 2 wireless cards so in theory it could be used to extend the effective range of an existing wireless network too
installation is simple but basically you give the wireless card i used a belkin usb 54g dongle type on channel 6 a fixed address and tell it to connect to an adhoc network called "whatever"
you add a network packet driver, nat32 holds your hand installing this,
then the pc needs a reboot.
first time you run nat32 it runs through the configuration you tell it what card connects to the internet and which card connects to your private net
(that is your adhoc wireless network) it sets things up
scan for a network on your pda tell it to look for adhoc networks connect to "whatever" and tell it when it asks, it connects to work.
you should then have wireless access to the net.
if your doing this with two wireless cards make sure you have seperate channels set up for your infrastructure network and your adhoc network.
the belkin 54g usb wireless dongle costs about 25 from staples or 30 from pc world (both are local for me)
the host pc will run fine without any problems with nat32 running or not
no proxys need configuring a registered verion of nat32 costs from
$25 but this gets you registered for just one pc and really you want it so you can roam with a usb wireless card in your pocket and your pda.
I think adhoc wireless networking works for up to 30 wireless points.
i did it with a pda, mdaIII and a laptop.
basically like ics but with less problems
I think you can do this with bluetooth as well but that really isn't fun
hope this is useful sorry its so rough but i have to get to work
Think you may be on the trail of a problem that I am stuck on at the moment . I have the XDA11i and want to connect it via blue tooth to a blue tooth modem connected in turn to to a BT wall socket ( in that way I can surf for 1p per min !!!) no matter what I seem to do whilst the PDA will recognise the Modem as a serial modem ( and form a secure link ) it wont talk to it and get it to dial up . Zoom ( Hayes ) are wondering if 02 have disabled the element in blue tooth that lets this work ? Any thoughts . with the above I dont need to lug my lap top round with me .

i do not want buy a 3g data card for the laptop is it possble to feed the laptop
through wi-fi or with a cable from 3g universal
I dont think you can do it by wifi but you can connect the 2 devices by wifi no issue. I tnihk the same applies to the cable either USB or LAN. However you can by bluetooth. All you need to do is set up the exec to be discoverable and get the lap top to look for bluetooth devices and explore the services on them. You will them see the bluetooth modem. Then all you need to do is to create a link to your mobile operators gprs or 3g internet connection in the usual way. You will need to download the setup specific for your network.
Good luck
Also remeber to up the speed from the default as this assumesgprs and you have afaster connection with 3g.
If you do not have bluetooth on your laptop just buy a BT dongle for about £15 then you are away.

An XDA as a router! Wonder if MS will make a version of the Internet Connection Sharing Wizzard for WM5! LOL
I can see the use but not someone actually making it.
There is a thread on this somewhere.
I connect my universal to my laptop via the sync cable and then the laptop uses the universal as a modem and connects to teh web at 3g speed. The universal comes with wireless modem, you just have to play around to get the drivers on the laptop to see the universal when you plug in.
works well.

thanks eveyone been a geat help
This seems bizarre - but when when my laptop (Acer Travelmate 290) internal wireless card is on, the Atom wifi wont connect to the ADSL wireless router (Netcomm NBSPlus4W ADSL2+). It sees it, try to connect but wont connect.
Switch the laptop wireless off and the atom connects Ok. Its not 100% the case but I have switched the laptop off & on enough times to prove itsmore than just coincidence.
I tried the latest Atom wireless ROM upgrade to ...R00045 but no change.
All the other computers are happy to work together including a desktop & wireless IPAQ PDA, but unfortumatley the Atom just doesn't want to play together!
Any of you gurus have any suggestions. The Atom help desk proclaimed they hadn't heard of this problem!
Thks, Chris
Max #of DHCP users or Defined MAC adresses might be helpful in router settings :?:
What happens if you connect the Laptop to the router by cable? is the Atom then able to connect?
check the settings in your wireless connection for the modem, you will probably find it is restricted to one connection at a time, if your laptop is on but you disconnect the wireless access can you then connect your atom if yes this is the problem.
Cheers
Many thanks to you all for your replies.
The number of connections doesn't seem to be a problem as I tested with a desktop wth ethernet connection, two wireless connected devices (a desktop and a wirelss ipaq pda) plus the laptop via ethernet and the Atom connected ok.
The problem seems only related to the laptop internal wireless as I have now changed the laptop to use only an extemal wireless card and now the Atom always connects ok.
All other wireless devices are happy to connect while the laptop internal wireless is used.... BUT not the Atom.
Has been very frustrating and time wasting - just to identify the source of the problem. As to a fix... if you have any further thoughts or suggestions I'd look forward to hearing from you.
thanks Chris
I have a wireless network setup at home.
My atom connects to my wireless network fine and i can use the internet on it, but I would like to connect my laptop to my wireless network using the atom as a wireless adapter.
Can this be done and how?
Thanks.
I am getting ready to head on vacation and I want to use my 8525 as my "Gateway" as there will be 5 of us with laptops and I want to share my 3G connection so here is what I did. I connect my 8525 to my Laptop via usb, I start internet sharing on the 8525 and in my laptop (vista) under network connections I see Local Area Connection 6, remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device. I right click this connection and select Sharing, and enable internet connection sharing on it. Then what I did was took my router (linksys) and disabled dhcp, but enabled wireless and didnt set any wep or wpa. I connect from my laptop to a port on the router (not the internet port) and then goto another laptop to see if I have internet. I dont, I can see the ssid, I can connect but I do not have internet access. Should I use a crossover cable? What do I have to do so that all of us can have internet thru my phone? Oh, my laptop does have internet (from the usb connection on the phone). I tried to setup the router so that dhcp was enabled, but then I kept getting an ip conflict error, so we cant do that. Also I am not getting an ip on the wireless, it has an ip of like 169.254.177.12.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jim
There a software which you can install on 8525 and turn it into a wifi internet sharing but I don't know if it capable of handing up to 5 laptops. You might be able to use this software and get a router with some custom firmware which allow bridging then set it up to have router access the internet from 8525 wifi and share it among the 5 laptops but I am not sure if you could bridging and do wifi AP on the same router if not then you'll probably need to have 2 router one to bridge from 8525 wifi and then connect cable to another router that will be an AP for the laptops.
That would be my best guess of doing this unless one of the laptop can do AP via wifi when 8525 is plugged into usb slot.
