Resco Explorer takes quite some time to produce a file listing when navigating to the \Windows folder. Related to the frequent concurrent access by the OS?
Anyway, I have many many files - most are bmp, gif or HTML files. Now I rarely use the help so can I move these files out of the Windows folder and give Resco Explorer a little relief or will it have no effect?
I've done it with WM2003SE but to no discernable effect, mind you, I did save nearly a megabyte...
Well, I've moved the lot to my SD and zipped them up. The zip is 940Kb on maximum compression and navigating the \Windows folder is much faster.
Not really tried, but discovered that the help files apparently need to be in the device "\Windows" folder. Tried moving a couple to the Storage Card "\Windows" but they wouldn't open when called.
Thats because "\Storage Card\Windows" aint the same path as "\windows"
\ <----root
\windows
\Storage Card\Windows <--its an extra folder in depth.
if you get what i mean :?
Hi,
Which help fikes do you want to move? The .htm in \windows or the .lnk in \windows\help, the last are the shorts & should be changed to point to the new location. Further you can add \storage\windows to the systempath registry value.
And these two values speeded up my WM2003SE device noticibly, especially file browsing:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\CacheSize=4096
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\EnableCache=0x1(1)

Now you can play the Polyphonic Ringtones on your XDA-I,Qtek1010,Siemens SX56,MDA-1 and T-Mobile with full instruments just by installing this file into your device  :
- MIDI56.sa.CAB
How to:
1- Copy the MIDI56.sa.CAB into your xda to any place you want then open the Explorer from your XDA,goto the folder you pasted the file in then click on the file after that get a *.mid file paste it into the \WINDOWS\RINGS,
Open the Phone from Settings and select the midi file you want it to be as your ringtone.
2- For whom the ringtone still doesn't work at all you just neet to extract the file >>CameraRC132_WWE_1.5.sa.zip<< and copy the cab file to your device and install it. Get the file from :

I don't have the code that you're asking about bcz I didn't write it! I took this cab file from the Newest Himalaya's Extended-Rom
Your MIDI56.sa.cab has problems
Not that it matters that much to some folks...but in case you have an XDA-1 /MDA/PPC Phone Edition....I can confirm the following:
1. With WM2003, you will definitely need the Camera------.cab file installed, plus the MIDI56.sa. Mind you, you will have to install the MIDI56.sa file first, and then install the Camera------.cab
2. It will use up about 600+ K of needless memory on your XDA-1 because obviously, we don't have camera's. So.....what're you to do ? Well, go to
\WINDOWS
and look for Camera.EXE ( approx 500+ K )
Then, what you can do is launch Album, and look again at the \WINDOWS directory...and you will see a bunch of bitmaps obviously ( among other things ). Now..what you're looking for is files dated from 8/20/2003 ( that's 20/8/2003, for you folks EAST of the Atlantic ). Primarily they're bitmaps that were used by the Camera application. They add up to about 50-60 K. There's probably more files associated with the Camera.exe application that you won't need, plus any references in the PPC's registry will probably need to be ferreted out.
But...once you've done that, you've actually reclaimed approximately 800 K in space. Which on a 32MB unit, is a fair bit of memory.
Enjoy !

Marcelo,
I updated the installation instructions, you needed more to read about it.
Mind you, it doesn't matter what you install first cos I had the camera and album files in ppc b4 the midi cab file so it's ok.
Actually it's taking more than you are claiming, since those files installed in the \WINDOWS you can move them to "\Storage card\Album\Album.exe" "\Storage card\Camera\Camera.exe" like I did and gain back the used space , there's also a help file related to the camera it's about 56 kb you could remove it from "\WINDOWS" plus the little bitmaps. Thus you can as well fix the path in the registry for the files associations + making new shortcuts for the Album.exe,Camera.exe and by replacing them on the old ones.
Excellent !!!
I have to remind people that you MUST be careful when deleting the little bitmaps...look at them inside of Album first before deleting anything.
I had to reinstall my GPRS Monitor application because I deleted one of it's bitmaps by mistake....word to the wise !!!
Also I found TONS for MIDI files ( amateur ones ) to use as ringtones....,now if there were a way to make the ringtone directory point to my storage card, that would be great !!

Marcelo,
Moving the ringtones to the Storage card that was my other issue since a long time. I managed a way to do that it. Well for the first try it was successful but when the ppc turns it self off and some one calls you you’d hear the "windows default" ring and it remains whether you selects another ringtone. I kept a backup up on my registry to restore it back to the last status.
So if you like to share me your assistance I'd be grateful.
I'll give you tips of doing that and the project from here it starts…
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S: I recommend a backup on the registry b4 applying those tips
===============================================
1- (Looping Ringtones)
This tweak works perfectly you should apply it to your ppc's:
While playing a wav or midi or a wma as the ringtone the phone has a delay of 3 seconds before repeating, now this is really annoying if you've just created that great wav,wma ringtone, spent time making it loop properly in sound editor or whatever, and then the ppc does the silly delay, well, here’s the fix...
Open the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0
Select 'Values'
And modify 'Script' by removing the w3 (eg. change 'av0pw3r' to 'av0pr')
"w3" stands for "Wait 3 seconds" you can make it "w1" or "w4" or remove to make the ringtone loops
===============================================
This tweak works for the first time you do it but when the ppc turn it self off the ringtone you selected won't play again :S be noticed.
2-Ringtones on SD/MMC Card
Open the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0
Select 'Values'
Select 'Sound' and change the Value Data: \Storage Card\path to wav\wavname (eg. \Storage Card\Ringtones\mytone.wav)
We need here more try about this tweak and good ways to fix so ppl let’s do some tests
===============================================
This is the registry key where all ring tones s/w is playing whenever it comes to customizing a phone ring tone ... including PZP
and that's why all these s/w keeps a "live" component in the back ground to override what Windows is updating each time.
So, PZP was designed as today plugin, so Windows will force it to update the ring tones with each system referesh ... other s/w may keep a background process DLL running or to reconnect cprog.exe to their DLL ... or even to trap the system events to cprog.exe and redirect them to their handler.
So, I think (I might be wrong too ) the trick is to build a live demon to keep updating this registry key.
Necessary Files
I've been able to cut the necessary files for polyphonic ringtones down to ~570KB. Keep in mind I did this on a device with a ROM that was already cooked with supposed "support" for polyphonic ringtones, so there may be other files it is relying on. At any rate, the kitchens need to be updated with these files, because it doesn't work as-is.
There also may be ways to trim even more down, but this is what I have after many hard resets and adding/deleting files one by one. Hope it helps.
Shawn
You can get rid of it:
- Take two TSK-Files that you like on your PC (small ones of course)
- rename them exactly to the names as the ones in \Windows (i-mate_Grass and i-mate_Swoosh)
-Copy them to \Windows.
I have attached 2 TSK Files that you can use an copy to the \Windows directory
Cheers

AWESOME dude - 2Mb of valuable storage memory saved!
Absolute legend,
I came across these the other day and wanted to get rid of them... need all the space I can get...
I tried this but it doesn't actaully seem to liberate any storage memory? the files are small when viewed with file expoloere but the free storage space reported by the memory settings applet is unchanged?
Hi everyone, i would like to make myself some cab files for different things. I downloading MakeCab.exe, but like to use this software but i dont want to pay over £100 for it!!
Does anyone know a good cab maker that does not cost the earth and has a good user face llike makercab.exe?
Please give me name and cost of programme
also can anyone give me an example of what should be in the *.ddf file, as i have not really got into it big yet!
For about 2/3 you can get the WinCE CAB Manager:

Not exactly 'cheap' of course, but it's a great program IMO.
dang, why is are they so costly!!!

This is good for starters http://www.codeproject.com/ce/pocketpc_deploy.asp - dont worry about the ddf file its just part of the cabwiz app - the most important file is cab.inf

Thats the same list as used on msdn - use %CE1% and then when you come to install it will ask you to install on device or storage card.
If you want to force it to the storage card write it without % % say \storage card\program files\myapp\ but i think with wm5 a dialog will still come up - you have to write the cab with xml to get a dialog free installation.
On MSDN (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa458859.aspx) you see this :
The following table shows the installation macros that you can use for Windows Mobile-based applications. Use these macros in the DestinationDirs section of the CabWiz setup .inf file.Note Windows CE supports other predefined installation macros, such as %CE3% for \Windows\Desktop. However, these are not supported on Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs, and their usage in an .inf file on a Pocket PC may have unexpected results.%CE1% \Program Files
%CE2% \Windows
%CE4% \Windows\StartUp
%CE5% \My Documents
%CE8% \Program Files\Games
%CE11% \Windows\Start Menu\Programs
%CE14% \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games
%CE15% \Windows\Fonts
%CE17% \Windows\Start Menu
Is there a command-line tool (free) whitch creates cabs and runs right on the Pocket PC? On Windows I can use makecab. But now I want to port my theme maker (in Tcl) to the PPC (there I have pixane support ) and need a similar program. I hope someone has a good tip for me.

Hi guys
I've had my TD2 for about 6 months and all good so far - thank to this site
Recetly, I can't get in to File Explorer via the phone. When i click on the icon, I get the Windows logo (the horrid round pie-chart one!) and it just sticks for ever! I have to "X" out of it but then it locks up my RAM so i have to do a soft reset each time
I notice that when i click on File Explorer the directory it is trying to get in to is Windows - which i know from previous use is the slowest one to get in to out of all the directories (e.g. My Programs, Documents, etc). I wonder if this is a cause?
By the way, I can Sync all ok (via ActyiveSync on XP) and can get in to the different directories including Windows this way just not through the phone.
Please tell me i won't have to do a hard reset - I really don't want to do this! Tell me there's an xda-developers approved app out there somewhere!
Thanks for the help guys.

I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.
I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock/crash my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.
I had this exact problem. There is a registry edit you can do (sorry I cant remember exactly what it is) so File Explorer stops trying to load the Windows folder when it starts.
The other solution is to use Total Commander, which I think is a much better file explorer.
Thanks for the response guys.
ozmbie - cheers for this, I'll have a look at Total Commander tonight. Pity you can't remember the reg edit.
Anyone out there know the edit??
Thanks again
Mo
You can use also Resco explorer.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\File Explorer\LocalPath
Change from "\windows" to just"\" (without the "" of course)
Pete_S - the reg edit worked a treat.
Cheers mate.

I've had File Explorer do this when it was set to look at Windows. As you know, there's a stupid amount of files in \Windows so that it takes File Explorer (or Explorer over ActiveSync), ages to read the folder and show the results. This problem is exacerbated massively if you put a sort on the folder other than by "Name". I've done that, and had it take 5 minutes or so before the list appears. So if you're in the same situation you probably don't need to edit the registry, you just need to leave it for long enough. Just go and make a cuppa!

Aah, funny you mention the "sort folder by", as mine was set to "type" (not sure how) so i guess that's what was making it hang for ages! Will bear it in mind next time.

So I have been around here for a small bit of time leeching and I just thought I should share this registry tweak I found.
I tried the various available apps for changing the location where files received by bluetooth are saved but none of them seemed to work with my phone(mogul WM 6.1),
googling around there seemed to be consensus that there was really no solution or fix for this(more so for WM 6.1 phones)
The trick
It's quite simple actually:
-With a registry editor(am personally using total commander) go to:
\HKLM\System\Explorer\Shell Folders\
-Once there,Navigate down to the 'My Documents' key
-Double click on it and edit the string as follows:
\SD Card\My Documents\
i.e add the name of your memory card(mine is 'SD Card') before the \My Documents\.Do not forget about the \
that comes before the memory card name( i.e \SD Card).
-Exit the registry and with whatever file explorer you have, rename the default 'My Documents' folder on your phone to something else like 'Dox'
-Restart the phone.
If all goes well, when you receive files via bluetooth, they should be found in the root directory of the memory card.
Hope those developers who have been working on this, use this info to develop an app that will actually work on all WM 6.1 phones.
Thanks for this tip. What else changes, though?
