Has anyone noticed that when you press the camera button, the screen brightness goes up above the maximum level available?
Just wondering if anyone knows of a registry hack that will keep the screen at this higher brightness level?

I donwloaded it ( camsetbl ) but i dont know how to use it.
the links tell me that .exe is not find. exe is on my sd like those other links!

Damien - you have to install the app to the same folder the links are hardcoded to. That might mean nothing to you, in which case, download gsfinder or another explorer that can make links.
Find camsetbl, make a shortcut to it, edit the shortcut to use the command line options Chatty indicated, eg -on, -install etc.
If that means nothing to you either, do some more reading or try using my version.

(If you want to use another directory edit all *.lnk files beforehand with any text editor (notepad for instance) to suite your chosen directory.)
Once copied, tap "on.lnk" or "off.lnk" to set BL (=backlight) once to the selected state (goes to off during suspend automatically). If you want it on all the time you may consider "installing" it by tapping "install.lnk". This uses the notification queue to run "on.lnk" every time your Magician comes off of stand by.
Getting CamSetBl to install

Thanks for your help but I'm still having trouble getting CamSetBl to stay on. Now that I realize that the files go into \ (not \Program Files) the shortcuts turn the program on and off, but the -install shortcut seems to do the same thing as the -on shortcut, ie it doesn't keep the backlight bright after you turn the power off. Strangely, the backlight stays bright for me no matter how I turn CamSetBl on as long as I only turn the JAM off for a second or so. Any longer than that and the backlight goes back to the old level. Any ideas?

Let's start a thread of all the reg tweaks ppl have come up with. If they are saved as .reg files (to an SD), we can install them with a mere double-click by using TRE (options>associate), and anyone can contribute to this post WITHOUT having to build .cab files! Why is this kewl; cos when u hard reset it's a real ball-ache to go back into all the forums to find the tweaks u applied and to navigate thro TRE to re-apply them all. This applies particuarly to settings (Owner info etc). Over and above, we are no longer beholden to tweak shareware, but have full and instant control over our settings.
Each tweak should have 2 reg files; Apply the tweak, and remove the tweak (if possible). In this manner, we can have a directory of reg files, and can turn on and off tweaks with a simple d.click.
Attached is a basic set I've compiled. Please let everyone know if any are a problem (ie perhaps whole key gets replaced and overrides something u have already changed). Files described below:
[*]Reg Date_In_Titlebar ON.reg
Adds the date to the title bar, with format according to your short-date format under settiings>regional (or found manually changed in another Tweak I'll cover later). I do NOT have a .reg file that will undo (ie delete) this new key, but it's easy to see what key is being added so u can delete it. <Credit: Well known PPC tweak - I probably learnt from toenailed>
Can someone please find out where we can change the font for this - it's a horrible bold font that doesn't fit in the space available?

Awesome tweak to make sure ur phone connects to GPRS/3G and stays there. However, you'll want to switch this off overnight etc, which is the main reason I created this post and these reg files. NOTE: you will absolutely HAVE to replace the "MTN SA Web" bit with the name of your connection which you will find in this key using TRE

Having the Last Dialed No. showing rite up on the Dialer Screen is really bothering and if you happened to press the phone button by mistake twice there we go the last dialed no. has been dialed already for you....

I have a suggestion:
HKCU/ControlPanel/Backlight sets the backlight duration for the keyboard (in seconds). It's available through the control panel, but I like it set to more than the CP maximum of 10 seconds. Sorry - I don't know how to create a reg file.
To reset, choose another value in the backlight control panel applet.
Don't have any others to add though

Nice one dude. I can't make the .reg file cos I can only create reg files of the entire key, and there are too many other things under GWE that users may have changed.

The setting is at 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Obex'
The 'IsEnabled' DWORD value should be set to '1' to enable OBEX and '0' to disable OBEX.
For example, to enable the ability to receive fles via Bluetooth

With your .reg files as inspiration I'm just about getting there in the same way. I've written down all the steps and I just run through them. I've done this since I had my XDA2 and it makes a hard reset so much less traumatic:
Code:
Hard reset. Wait for Today screen then soft reset.
Connect cable to ActiveSync. Set up guest connection.
Turn off beams, error reporting
Set basic clock accuracy
Copy Step 1 files to root of PPC [These are the CABs for the programs I install]
Run CABs. Leave O2 Connections CAB. Put gps.CAB and PIMAddin onto storage card
Run TRE registry editor. Associate .reg files to TRE
Open the .reg file [This applies my registry settings. See below]
Run O2 connections CAB
Copy all Step 2 files to root of PPC [This adds shortcuts to StorageCard-installed programs to my Start Menu and gives me my freeware email client and PZP icons and profiles]
Run SDK Certs CAB
Run OzVGA. Change all fonts to same size as qVGA
PPC: edit registry: browse to HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings. Delete the DWORD marked "hide"
CPL > Personal > Buttons: match Button 2 to [Task switcher], Button 4 to <Rotate Screen>; Set button lock

This small tool will cycle ur today background or theme after a set interval of time.
Usage:
1. Make a folder on ur device (preferably not on storage card.) and extract all the files (mainly ShantzTodayChanger.exe, TdyChangerCfg.exe, gsgetfile.dll (might not be visible to u depending on ur explorer settings) and Readme.htm) to this folder.
2. IMP: Do not rename any files.
3. Run the TdyChangerCfg.exe.
4. Set options through the dialog that opens and press apply button (Pressing the native WM OK button will discard all your changes)
5. Options:
i)Choose image type (.gif\.jpg\.png) or theme(.tsk) to be cycled.
ii)If the input files (images or themes) are not in the folder where exes are kept, then you can check the box (underneath the .gif option) and give the "FULL and ABSOLUTE" path of where the files are kept. You can either input the path thru keyboard or choose it graphically by pressing the button (...) next to it.
iii)If you want to run a file after every cycle interval, check the corresponding box and provide the "FULL and ABSOLUTE" path of the file to be run. You can either input the path thru keyboard or choose it graphically by pressing the button (...) next to it.
iv) If you want some files to be avoided during cycling, put a file mask. The program will look for this mask to appear anywhere in the name of the files and will avoid it if found. (Wildcards are not supported. Choose time option has to be checked for this to work)
v) Choose the period for which mask option has to be used. If you choose a time period and leave mask as empty, then during that time no cycling will be done. If you want to avoid some files all the time, then time period should be chosen to cover all 24 hrs of the day.
vi)enter the desired interval between cycling of images\themes.
vii)If you choose a period for the mask, another check box (Consider mask period for exe also) will be enabled. Checking this box will mean that the specified exe will be run only if an image\theme is changed during that cycle. If you dont check this, then exe will be run after every cycle even if there is no change in the image\theme.
6. When you want to stop the cycling, press "STOP Cycling" button.
Additional Notes:
1. I've tested it only on my WM6 HTC Wizard and WM5 emulator. Might work with other devices/OS's but not sure...
2. Doesnt have to be running constantly. So saves resources when not active.
3. Survives soft resets as well.
4. Even takes care of the situation if your phone is off when the time to cycle is reached. Will cycle as soon as ur phone comes back on in this situation.
Planned Updates:
i) Suggestions invited. I have a lot of updates in mind but will incorporate those only which are requested by you.
Known Issues:
i) If the mask option is selected, then in a very particular situation, the app will miss a cycle.
This can be taken care of but not in my priority list because this can be fixed only by rewriting the complete cycling code which is quite a bit. So, will fix it if I get some time from my other projects.
ii) If after maknig the configuration, you see the screen flash for a second at the right times, but the backfround doesn't change, then do this:
- Go to : Settings...today....appearance
- un-check "Use this picture as background"
- start the program using "startTodayChanger.lnk" or TdyChangerCfg (Apply button)
(Thnx to CWKJ for reporting this bug and fix, and to eric for reminding me about it)
End Note:
Like every software, this one is also bound to have bugs, please report it asap.
Though ShantzTodayChanger does not run continuously but sometimes some apps that close all processes automatically (like SPB backup) might clash in schedule with ShantzTodayChanger and close it when it starts to run. In such a case (which is quite unlikely), the app might not be able to set a notification for next cycle, so if u face this situation, then run the config again.

Feature request: JPG or PNG support would be great. Also, a way to specify where the files reside, maybe command line? If argument is not present at command line, then default to install directory (program root)

ii) "-s" - stop cycling.
iii) "-c" - cycle immediately. DONT USE THIS OPTION. MIGHT CREATE PROBLEMS.
2. I've tested it only on my WM6 HTC Wizard and WM5 emulator. Might work with other devices/OS's but not sure...
3. It runs only when wallpaper has to be changed. So saves resources when not active.

(what i am planning here is having different themes during different times of the day)
along with it say can you make it check the time (say instead of 600s i would like to change it at 12, 3, 6 and 9...)

Do you mean, you want to change it at a specific time of the day? Hmmm, I may try to include an option to specify the "cycle start time" along with the gap, which should take care of this...
not working on my o2 XDA II mini win 2003SE.it says not a valid pocket pc....
@Sathya: It works only on WM5 and WM6. I'll see if just a simple compilation for the WM2003 platform will work and let you know...
@ALL: Those who have tried it on their WM5/WM6 devices, please let me know if its working ok for you or not.
BTW, i've started working on a few updates, check in Post #1..I think I'll make two versions for this, a normal one and an extended one, so that those who want a smaller footprint can use the normal version...

Hmmm, it works perfectly on my WM6 HTC Wizard and the WM5 emulator as well...Not getting any time right now to look more..Will post a debug build tonight..But can someone please check the registry. I had said earlier also to check under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ShantzTodayChanger, to report back what all settings exist there, after you have completed all the process...
Found some problems with the code...Have removed the utility till further notice...
Found out part of the problem by inspecting a colleague's device...Its because of how some devices behave to background change if themes are installed..
Will make the change when i go back home tonight and also see if there is any other problem...
Fixed the bug...It should be ok now for all WM5/WM6 devices..
With 1.11 it now works fine!

Hi all,
i would like to share with you a utility i have written to help me with my PDA.
Mainly (as the name says), with this utility different programs can be started by using the keys of the PDA.
Its like an extension of the hotkeys but without impacting the hotkey usage.
I have included one more utility which i use together with the hardkeymenu called cscommandline.
Information is included in the cscommandline-spec.txt.
This utility can turn on/off the bluetooth, set the global volume to a value, set the ringer volume to a value,
set the ringer script to a value (this enables the vibration during the alert of calls etc).
I have tested it on a TyTn with WM6 but it should work under WM5 as well.

Usage

Hardkeymenu extends the usage of hot keys:
Its possible now to assign any program (.exe) or registered file to be executed with a
combination of user defined key strokes.
It provides feedback (picture/sound/vibrates) of the options selected.
The program works as follows:
Once the hardkeymenu is executed, it will read the hardkeymenu.dat and wait for keystrokes.
The program if it finds within the same directory the file hardkeymenup.jpg (when in portrait)
or hardkeymenul.jpg (when in landscape) will use it as a background picture. Otherwise, it will
use the current desktop as a background picture.
If any matching sequence is found, then the relevant description (or picture if present) will be displayed.
If the user does not press any other key, then the relevant sound will be played (if present), the corresponding
program/file will be executed and hardkeymenu will terminate.
If no matching has been found, it will wait for 7 seconds and if no key is pressed it will exit.
If the nomatch.jpg picture is present then it will be displayed otherwise it will display
the key sequence.
The hardkeymenu can be assigned to a Hot-key for quick start up (usual Registry setting,
for example: HLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C7)

The combination key sequence and command can be created by running the setup option.
This option appears when clicking anywhere on the screen while the program is running
and a popup menu will appear with the relevant 'Setup' option.
Through the Setup screens,
- the 'Description' to be displayed when the key sequence is found, can be set. If there is a file with the
same name and extension .jpg then it will be displayed instead.
- the 'Keys' (key sequence that is supposed to trigger the command that follows), can be captured by pressing the relevant
button 'Capture'.
Keys can be pressed and the program will display them for reference. To complete the capturing wait 5 seconds without
pressing any key and the capture screen will exit.
- the 'Command Line' (file to be executed) can be also selected. Pressing 'Browse' will display all files in the PDA and clicking on the
required file will fillin the command line.
- 'Command Parameters' (any optional parameters that might be required together with the command line) can be
keyed in.
- 'Sound', if checked then after selection before executing the 'Command Line', if a file with name 'Description'
and extention .wav will be played.
- 'Vib Scr.', is a script for Vibrating before executing the command. Letter L will produce a Long vibration, S will
produce a short one.
'Description', 'Keys' and 'Command Line' are required, if either is not set then the whole entry is ignored.
Navigation through the total of 20 entries is feasible with the 'Next' and 'Back' buttons.
A whole entry can be ignored by pressing 'Delete'.
Pressing 'Done' saves all the changes (No need to save one by one), 'Cancel' will ignore them all.

Installation Instructions

All files including pictures mentioned must be located in the same directory.

if the message 'Wrong Version' appears, then delete the hardkeymenu.dat is the latest version is not

If a file with the same name as the 'Description' and extension '.wav' exists in the directory of the hardkeymenu

I tied some of the directions on my dpad to some .exe's and got a certificate error? If i link to a lnk of the same .exe it works fine.
It would be awesome if a future version had a easier method of setting up the buttons to the desired path.

It looks like this certificate error pops up only with the first attempt to execute any program.
Is this correct ?
I am trying to figure out why this is happening but it looks that this message comes up when any program is first time executed in the PDA even from explorer.
I am adding a small setup form to help assign the keys as you mentioned.

Well another change as when using it, i wanted to hear a sound as a confirmation of what i had finally selected
I have included in the zip file some wav files as samples together with the pictures i am using to turn on/off bluetooth.

Hi guys,
I know it's a 10 seconds job to create a link for items inside the control panel (settings) such as "Usb to PC" or "Power" but I'm too lazy to do it every time I try a new rom,
also I found some of the values change from rom to rom, so I create a really simple app that goes through the registry key which holds the settings items (KLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start) and creates a .lnk file for each of these entries.
Having a direct link allows me to add that option as a quick link which is handy 8)
Anyway, here is the tool in case someone wants it.
The exe must be installed in "\Program Files\CplLinks" (Device). It only takes 11.5 kb. The only reason the .exe is needed after the lnk are created is to provide an icon.
When you run it, it reads the HKEY mention above and creates .lnk for each item in the "Settings" menu. The lnks are created in "\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\CplLinks" so are directly accessible through the Programs menu.
There are no messages, it runs and creates the links, no interaction whatsoever so do not expect any nice popup window 8)
Next version will use specific icons for each item, right now, all the links use the same icon from the cpllink.exe executable.
The icons for most of the Settings are .png files rather than .ico, and WM doesn't have an easy way to convert from .png into .ico, the idea for a "future version" is to collect all the .png files,converted to icons and create a dll on the fly with the icons as resources, so they can be referenced from the .lnk files

After applying a Hard Reset WE have to reinstall all programs if you have previously installed them in the memory card. Often it is sufficient to recreate the shortcut in the start menu. ShortCutCreator helps you to recover the exe files and to recreate the desired shortcut.

I guess would be better if I manage to provide a different icon for each link, but Icon support is quite limited inside VM. Need to work in the PNG to Icon -> .dll routine 8)
I though having the app in internal memory was a better solution than in \Storage Card, so it will take less time to load the icon from the program, but I can change it and allow that option, so the icons in the links are pointing to \Storage.. rather than \Programs..
Anyway, it just a time-saver thingy 8)
Nice app. It does not seem to work on WM6.1 though.
It does create a new folder structure: CplLinks\System inside the Start Menu.

Yep, I saw it only works on WM6.5, on WM6.1 there are no "StartInfo\Start" in the "KLM\Security\Shell\". Not sure where it keeps that info, maybe somewhere else in the registry.
I finally managed to convert PNG to ICO, so I think next version would allow you to choose which items you want to create links for rather than just dump everything 8)

WM6.1 control panel is "HKLM\ControlPanel" if I remember correctly. There will be numbers for the mycpl stuff and words for some other control panel items like backlight, etc.
I think this post got lost in the last database disaster 8)
