Remove Windows Media Player Completely? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Is it possible to remove Windows Media Player?
Or at least set it to NOT be the default MP?
TCPMP is light years better and I'd rather make it default.
Any tips?

hmm, I guess the lack of response indicates it's not been possible.
I had hoped somebody would have worked it out by now! same reason for me, TCPMP is my player of choice...I have no need for WMP now.

Just set TCPMP as the default in file associations within the settings. When you click on a media file within file explorer, PIE etc, tcpmp starts up.

Though if you do this (and don't quote me on it), I believe that if you want to set an mp3 or m4a as a ringtone, then because WMP is no longer the app associated with those files, the option won't appear when you tap-n-hold on the song.
Cheers

Works on my exec fine........

How do you set it up? In which settings?

I just set TCPMP as the default app and copied the mp3 I want as a ringtone to \windows\rings folder. Then I just set the mp3 in phone options as the ringtone.

I was referring to the option "set as ringtone" in the context-menu, as it not only copied to windows\rings, but then sets as the current ringtone.
As I said, though, don't quote me.

Just tried it now and....... it works. There is no option within Resco File Explorer but there is in MS File Explorer.
All it does is copy the file to the \windows\rings folder and sets it as the ringtone.
@cktlcmd
start TCPMP, -> options -> settings -> select page -> File associations Then select all the media files you want associated.

MDA does not play neither mp3 no wma as a ringtone

Hi, all!
I got this problem: my MDA compact does not play neither mp3 no wma as a ringtone.
I changed a ROM to last i-Mate ROM, but problem persists.
Anyone got an idea?
ehmmm do it manually
what u have to do is, transfer the mp3 file from your computer to you MDA storage card. Then copy the file by tap and holding the file then click on copy... Then you go to Program -> File explorer -> windows -> ringtone and then paste it there...Now you have it ready for your ringtone file... Tell me if it works
Nothing works
Well, I put an mp3 file into \windows\rings\ and I can see it in Settings - Sounds and notifications and I can select it as a ringtone but when I press OK selected mp3 resets to windows default ringtone. The same situation with wma even with preinstalled wma such as Roaring guitar.
i get the same problem
seems like I catch a tail of the problem
On a clear device after hard reset everything is OK, ergo, the problem is in an installed software.
only software installed is SPB POcket Plus, GPRS Monitor, handyswitcher. resco explorer
Find it!

Have you iMusic (aka withMP3) player installed? In my case this software prevents MDA from playing mp3 as a ring
nope not installed
I have the same problem, with me it occured after changing the ringtone dir to the SD card, as described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=15902. After that, my ringtone keeps getting reset in the tools/options menu of the phone app, although I changed the registry key back to Windows/Rings. And that is strange, since the WIndows Default tone is not even in that folder, but in the WIndows dir! soft reset did also not work, and even altering the registry to make the default ringtone another one just resulted in no ringtone at all when a call is incoming! Any suggestions anyone?
OK, I may have a solution to your problem. After I f**ked up my register ( see my post above), I had the same problem. I fixed my register first, and then did the following:
-go to the ringtone you want ( in any location, be it your storage card, Windows folder or anywhere else) with File Explorer,
-just tap and hold the ringtone and from the pop-up menu select: "set as ringtone".
The file is then copied to the Windows/Rings folder, becomes visible in the list of ringtones you can choose and is automatically installed as your default ringtone. With me it worked, hope it does the same for you. Good luck!
I have been experimenting one this and basically from what I understand, you have to do the following:
If you want the thing to work as a default ring tone, I mean for any calls:
1) Copy the MP3 to Windows\Ring
2) Make sure the default application playing MP3 is working. Thus, if yo are using PocketMusic, make sure that when you click an MP3 file, PocketMusic will launch automatically. Otherwise, select Windows Media Player.
If you want ring tones for your homies:
1) Go to Photo Contacts.
2) Tap and Hold for your buddy and assign an MP3 ringtone.
I've encountered the same problem as antifa. When I try to choose an MP3 (saved in the Windows/Rings folder), it defaults back to Windows Default when I press the OK button to confirm the new ringtone selection.
It looks like the problem is related to file associations. After un-installing a particular software I lost the MP3 file association in such a way that tapping on an MP3 file from file explorer does not load media player.
I have now fixed the file association problem (using a 3rd party app) but the ringotone problem is still there!!
Any ideas please?

ringtone always goes to windows default, does not change wm5

I select a ringtone I used to have for my i-mate and now i loaded it for the jasjar, I select 'Set as Ringtone' it gives me the message that it has been copied and set....BUT if i go into the phone or if I call the ringtone selected is the Windows Default.....
any ideas?
Is it a MP3 ringtone? If so, if MP3s are associated with a program other than Window Media Player than this will happen.
I have Pocket Music on mine and I had to unassociated .mp3 with this program and now the ringtone stays set all the time.
I had the same problem on my pda2k wm5, finally to solve it i changed manually the registry where ringtone are written.
If you want to try, you need a registry editor, then go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\
Under RingTone0 you have the key "Sound" that is your actual ringtone and the key "SavedSound" that is still your ringtone (it's needed when you go to radio off to remember your ringtone).
Check this 2 keys and if are not your ringtone, write it manually: \windows\rings\xxx.wav

It is very easy and simple.
Copy your mp3 to My Device>Windows>Rings folder
Then go Start>Settings>Phone and select it as a ringtone.

Yes it is! The easiest way to do that is copying the desired mp3 file to the folder \Windows\Rings, than you can choose it as ring tone in the same way as the preinstalled tones (it appears in the same list).
If you like to have the "Set as ring tone" entry in the explorer context menu also for mp3 files (and not only for midi, mp4 and wma) do not the following registry change:
i think it is possible, i tried this in my i mate pda2k try it and tell us the result.
first use rescue registry which usually comes with rescue explorer then open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT THEN MP3 THEN DEFAULT THEN CHANGE MP3FILE IN THE SECOND SQUARE TO BE WMAFILE THEN OK

First: if you want to copy and choose the file manually, you don't need to change anything in the registry!
But if you change the linked file type from MP3File to WMAFile, you are telling the system that .mp3 is a wma file (and that is definitely wrong). That works as long as the system has under \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File and \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile equal entries for the used software to handle those files. But it's never a good idea to map different file extensions to the same file type except all these extension are synonyms and belongs to the same type of data (like .htm and .html). As soon as a user installs different players for wma and mp3 he will get into trouble.
So instead of mapping .mp3 to the type WMAFile it will be much better to add the missing context handler entry to the file type MP3File in the registry . (Only the entry is missing, the handler exists, we can use the one which is already used for wma, mp4 and midi, see below)
So lets have a look to \\\registry\HKCR\midifile\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\mp4file\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\wavfile\Shellext, \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile\Shellext and \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext and see:
the first 4 have a key named ContextMenuHandlers and all refer to the same handler, but there is no key named ContextMenuHandlers in \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext. So copy (not move!) \\\registry\HKCR\WMAFile\Shellext\ContextMenuHandlers completely (with all subkeys) to \\\registry\HKCR\MP3File\Shellext and you have will have the "Set as ring tone" entry in the explorer context menu of a .mp3 file too (and not only for .wma, .wav, .mp4 and .mid files). And you preserve the possibility to link different players to .mp3 and to .wma files.
And don't be afraid, the context handler for "Set as ring tone" for wma is the same as for wave, midi and for mp4 so it will work well with mp3 files too because it doesn't care about the file content. It does nothing more than copy the file to the folder \Windows\Rings. (Ok, the message box is telling that the file also has been set as new ring tone, but on my Magician that is not true, it is still the previous tone active and I have to choose it manually)
use this file and you have in the explorer-popupmenu the option "set as ringrone"
Click to collapse
That also creates the missing key but installs an additional handler and refers to it. I believe that these 100kBytes can be used better for other thing. As long as you are happy whith the way the systems handles .wma files (as ring tones) you can use the same handler for .mp3 files too and there is no need for an special "ring tone" handler for .mp3 files. But if you are afraid of modifying your registry but really want the context entry than this cab file is better than nothing.

Use any mp3 song as alarm?

First of all I tried search this, but with no results.
On Vario II, is it possible to use basically any mp3 song as an alarm (wake up, notification)?
Love to wake up with a favourite song rather than the irritating default tunes...!
What strings did you use as a search?

reverts to Default...
thanks. I put couple .wav files to the windows folder. they now appear in the drop down list in alarms, but when I click the wav I want it quickly automatically reverts to Default sound... weird?!
I try always my best to search answers before I post... don't know why didn't spot that one. thanks again.
maybe your WAV is not supported. What I usually do is run the WAV in Windows' soundrecorder and convert it or save as to PCM 22.050 Khz, 16Bit, Mono for alerts/system sounds.

You can use mp3 files directly - no need to convert to .wav. Just make sure that the extension ".mp3" is *not* associated with any program other than Windows Media Player. Many music players do associate themselves with .mp3 files during installation.
Also, the mp3 you want to use should be in either the \Windows or the \Windows\Ring folder.
Cheers

Make TCPMP the default player for audio...

Hi.
I don't see anything in settings to make this happen. The reason I'd like to is with the boost turned on the volume level is GREAT! I've heard of some issues using this as the default player for video, but I don't know if those are really a problem...just audio would be fine, but I'm thinking it would probably take a registry change? or hopefully not, so I can easily switch?
Thanks for any assistance.
Gary
I've got resco file explorer installed and you can use it like windows explorer, push & hold on file till menu appears and then choose Open With and tick the "Always use this program to open this file type"
Open TCPMP
Go to Settings
Go to Select Page
Go to File Associations
Select which file types you want to be opened by TCPMP
THANK YOU, Varunb007.
Just missed that one!
