Using Terminal Services Client through a Router - Networking

Hi all,
I have a Jasjar and can't access or should I say need help with setting up access through a Netgear Router. When I am at home I enter the ip address of the computer I want to access and it works awesome through the wireless network running through the Netgear router, but if I try to connect using the phone away form home it can't connect. I am assuming that it works at home as I am allready with in the network being that I am on the wireless network and when I am out I can't get in to the net work, I have no security on the router but I do have firewall turned on on the computer.
Router is Netgear WGR614
Any help please...

In your router: forward port 3389 to the ip of the pc you want to connect.
And if you connect using your phone(gprs), enter your home WAN-ip, ofcourse...

How do I find what my Home WAN-ip address is?
Thanks for the help

XDAIIs wifi aaaarrrghhh - I wanna break it

into teeny weeny little pieces.
I feel so much better now!!
Anyways...I have a wireless home network up and running and would like to connet the xda to it.
I can connect to the router no probs but IE cant connect to the web. it says "the page you are looking for cannot be found".
Any ideas why I can connect to the router but not to the web?
Cheers folks - thanks
I know how you feel. There are a couple things you have to do.
First check that you have selected to connect via "work".
Then ensure that the IP address shown is in the range of 192.168.0.X
had no problems with my wifi on my home network, as ale210p said, I think it's with the way your connect via "work" or "ISP" is configured
hiya folks
thanks for coming to my rescue..hopefully i can get this thing on the road.
- in connections - advanced - select networks. both selections are set to "my work network"
- in configure network adapters - network adapters. the "my network connects me to" dropdown is selected to work.
- where can i check my ip address on the device?
Alhtough I am connected to my wireless network as that what the wireless LAN manager says?
any ideas guys?
many thanks
Is your internet provider checking the MAC address? my provider checks for the MAC address and hence I had to register my MAC address first with the provider.
I'm pretty sure my ISP isnt checking my MAC address as my PC and other computer on the network work fine with regards to internet access and I never gave the MAC addresses to the ISP.
However, my modem router does have mac filtering enabled. I have copied the MAC address of the xda to the allowed list. However I've also tried to turn this filter off and the result was the same....I still could connect to my home wireless network but had the same error message when trying to surf through pocket IE.
Any other ideas on why I can connect to the network but IE wont let me surf?
thanks again
I'm having exactly the same problem as Richard. What I don't understand is, I can drive around and find free residential wireless hotspots and surf the net , but I can't do it on my own WLAN!
IP info OK?
These symptoms could indicate that vital IP info is missing on your XDA.
Does your XDA get an IP address + gateway address + DNS server address from the router's DHCP server? Use vxIPConfig to determine this http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html
I know for a fact that many times (not always) my QTEK 9090 does NOT get the required IP info from my SMC Barricade 2804WBR b/g wireless router, so I started using fixed addresses on my QTEK.
If I use DHCP, many times I can connect to the router but am unable to access the internet... Because the QTEK has not received an IP address/gateway address/DNS server address in those cases. Fixed addresses always work.
whoa
thanks for the advice. i installed the app. rubbed the sticks together and there were sparks i tell you!!! but what does it all mean?
the ip address is 169.254.84.245
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
dhcp server 255.255.255.255
im no tekkie so am not sure what the above means? does it provide any clues?
thanks for the advice so far
just an update
i manually inputted the ip address assigned to my xda by the router as i have dhcp disabled on the router.
nonetheless it sill doesnt let me connect to the net but i can connect to the wlan?

Fixed IP address is good, but have you also put in the gateway address and DNS server address? Normally the gateway address + DNS server address = router address.
If your routers IP address would be 192.168.1.1 (quite common address), then your IP address could be 192.168.1.2, gateway address would be 192.168.1.1 and DNS server (name server) address also 192.168.1.1.
BTW; this:
the ip address is 169.254.84.245
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
dhcp server 255.255.255.255 <========= !!!!
means that DHCP didn't work!
I suppose that when you state "connect to the wlan" you mean that you can 'see' machines on your local network? Or what? That would make sense because you wouldn't need a gateway address and DNS server address for that normally (broadcasts).
siliconaddict....you're a genius!
finally it works, it works i say.
fantastic.
thanks to all for the advice and feedback - much appreciated.
can i stoke the fire and ask how i can sync via wifi as well?
never done it myself, but here is a guide
I have never synced over WiFi myself, but here are some guides:
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/WM2003/ActiveSync/WM2003ActiveSyncConfiguration.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=132820
Please note that the next version of Activesync, version 4, doesn't do syncing over Wifi anymore...
Good luck!
Sorry to be a complete noob, but:
1. How do I find out the IP Address of the XDA (Is it in Wireless LAN Manager, under "current config" and "IP:"?)
2. My Netgear USB WLAN is showing an IP of "0.0.0.0" (on command prompt >> ipconfig) How do I change this?
Thanks
Q & A
A 1: On your PDA use Use vxIPConfig for this http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html. Unfortunately the OS doesn't have a standard utility for it, like 'ipconfig'.
A 2: Does your router hand out IP addresses at all? Or: is DHCP enabled on your router? If true, do you have the correct drivers loaded for that USB NIC? In Device Manager how does it look? Yellow exclamation mark? Can you post the output of 'ipconfig /all'.

Terminal Server/Remote Desktop connection over VPN?

I'm trying to connect to my server at work through the Jasjar's Terminal Services Client over a VPN and it's not working. The VPN connects and I can open up a web site on the server using an internal address, but the Terminal Services Client just times out. I can connect with the Terminal Services Client to other servers without using the VPN and I can connect through the VPN with a PC, so I don't know what's wrong. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Brett
are you using internal dns name or internal ip, if dns the ip should work and its cos your not internally resolving, i have this prob with when i vpn in to my server, dns does eventually resolve but ip is instant
Is the vpn terminal services restricted by IP address? Are you using gprs or wifi? If gprs maybe the ip range is not set up on the vpn??? If using gprs are you using the apn internet3.voicestream.com?
Sorry, I know, not much help. Mine seems to work
I'm trying to connect by IP address over wifi. The Jasjar does recognize that it should go over the VPN because it will automatically make the VPN connection when I try to start the TSC connection.
I'm glad to hear that it's working for you guys, though, so at least I know it's possible.
Thanks,
Brett
TSC/RDP
I am also having difficulty in this area and havent been able to resolve when using WIFI from my AP at home over ADSL to the Public IP address, then a TSC/RDP connection to the internal network IP address of our TS box.
I can easily get to the TS box via the WIFI AP at work directly, just not from the home AP. I can easily use the home AP for my home laptops to connect to work, so I know the systems at both end are up and operational.
In summary, I just dont know why the JJ doesnt VPN via the home AP over the ADSL to public IP to use the TSC to the internal IP of the TS box.
I just wanted to follow up on this. For some reason both of the servers I was trying to RDP into behind the firewall were in some wierd state and they weren't accepting any connections from anything but my desktop PC. I rebooted them today and that solved the problem I was having.
Thanks,
Brett

Terminal Services....Please Help!!!

I am in desperate need of Help!! Can someone walk me through all the correct router (Linksys WRT54G)/phone settings (Cingular 8125) for accessing Terminal Services over GPRS. I can connect through terminal services while at home on my wireless network by using my network IP address. I would like to have this feature when away from home. The PC I want to connect to has XP Pro and I have enabled remote access.

Well, for you to access it from outside of your home, you have to know the IP address your internet provider assigns you. And you most likely will have to enable port forwarding on your router.
To resolve my home network from the office, I use no-ip.org for a DNS forwarder. Bassically, myplace.bounceme.com always points to what IP my cable modem has. N0-ip.org is a free service, with a utility that keeps the DNS tables updated.
I have enabled port forwarding and I know the ip address provided by my dsl provider by accessing www.whatismyip.com.

DNS no server specified error on all wifi activity - HTC Wizard

i must have jacked something up. first i could not get a wifi connection at home, then i flashed the firmware on the device and asked it to use the mac to connect with static IP and now the pda browsers cannot get any DNS info
netfront states no dns server specified and wireless router log states DHCP Discover no response.
must be a setting somewhere i'm missing.
wireless laptop and wired pc working fine
you can really just use the ip of a known dns from the device too
all dns servers should respond from all devices asking for the ip given the hostname
setup
cable modem to wired linksys router (DHCP on) - DI-524 wireless router connected to wired router (DHCP on)
when you say 'known IP from device' you mean the wireless router? Do you mean have the wireless router give the PDA my ISP's DNS IP?
if so what happens to my ability to browse the LAN since the devices IP is now out of the scope of my LAN
SORRY I THINK I MEAN the error is
<< DNS Discovery no repsonse. >>>
basically no DNS server found when browsing with the PDA when connected to WLAN.
PDA is ok browsing when I connect to work routers. I'm getting IP ok from home wireless dlink router but router cannot give the PDA a DNS server.
ps- wireless laptop ok for DNS connecting to the same wireless router so i'm thinking the firmware update made the dlink not like the PDA
update- i think it's the device and a setting.
now i cannot get to the internet through netfront or ie at work connected to wifi router. same error
DNS no server is specified
can get anything by IP, is wm5 wifi challenged for internet access?
any takers?

Wifi but no Internet

Since I bought the HD2 before 2 month and after 2 Rom upgrade I still have the same Wifi problem. I can connect to my home network and the Router can see the HD2 but I can not connect to the Internet through the Wifi. All other computers and PS3 connect just fine. Ip adress seems also ok.
Please help ?
I did have the same problem a while back, and it occured after I used the wifi router. Have you ever used that, even just to try it?
No I never tried the Wifi Router even once and changed rom twice.

Probably not the same issue then. For some reason I had it trying to give me a static IP address that my router wouldn't allow (I've got MAC forwarding on my router to make sure that nothing other than the 4 things I have can connect to it).
When you connect to the wifi, can you open the router admin on your HD2?
Thanks for your help. No I cannot access the router from the HD2, could it be a proxy issue. I am not using a proxy for the internet

No worries mate - I hope I can help!
It's not a proxy issue, if you're not using a proxy server. Could you try this and let me know how you get on?
Start your wifi connection
Go to all settings, connection, wifi, wireless networks, network adapters tab
Select the Broadcom DHD adapter
It should be set to use a server assigned IP address, not a static one. It probably is, but it's worth checking.
When I open Wifi settings I can only open advanced no wireless networks or network adapter tab. How do I get there ?

After you've started wifi, go to the settings tab, menu and all settings. Then carry on the instructions in the last post.
Found the all settings, the DHD adapter is set to server assigned. Any other ideas ?
...
Well i think we have the same problem.. If you try to connect your wireless, do you get the failure after pressing get IP: Cannot obtain serverassigned IP....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627654 my thread was this..
I found out that if i you go under WIFI>ADVANCED>press on the NETWORKCARD under the field "SSID"> then go to the networkcard>Broadcom 802.11 DHD network adapter>remove the pin in use serverassigned, and write a static ip: example: IP: 192.168.1.23
UNDERMASK: 255.255.255.0
STANDARDgateway: 192.168.1.1
That helped for me, though i cannot use that fix because my college wont accept the static IP. so it works for like 2 mins and then it disconnect. hehe.
Heh - that would be pretty much my next suggestion.
Try a static IP address and see if that works. It's not a long-term solution, but it would determine whether it's your phone or the router that's having the problem.
Last time I set a static IP address, I liked it and left it like that, but I found (after a couple of days with no internet access) that it tries to assign the same IP address when you use your data connection for internet access. Your service provider is very unlikely to allow you to use the same IP address, so you probably can't connect.
Like I said, it's a test to see if you can connect - not a solution.
Do you know what IP addresses your router will allow you to use? Do you have a specified range of addresses, for example?
I have this exact same problem. I can connect to wifi networks at home, office, etc... But no network access. It connects to the AP's, gives me an IP Address, but I can't ping anything!
This thing gets more and more frustrating daily.

It also happened to me. Turns out it was the router I was using. I bought a new one earlier today and problem solved!
Hi!
I got a d-link dgl-4300 router, and had problem getting a IP adr. from it. When I gave my HD2 a static IP it worked, but very slow. After I changed from DHD network adapter to NE 2000 compatible ethernet driver it get IP from router and I can browse internet through wifi fast. Maybe it can help u 2.
regards Xes.
